What Joe and Pete did over those 25 days on the mountain back in 1976 is without doubt one of the most impressive climbing feats of all time. The fact that it has taken 46 years to be repeated is testament to the futuristic nature of their ascent. Their accounts of trying to sleep in spindrift filled hammocks hanging by a single piton are the stuff of nightmares.
@@george5590 Yes. Pete & Joe died attempting the last unclimbed ridge on Everest. The Complete North East Ridge & the pinnacles without oxygen in 1982. Peters body was found sat between 2 pinnacles in 1992. It is presumed that Joe may have fallen & an exhausted & dejected Pete sat down & couldn't get back up.
I was a part of IMF expedition in 2012 which was not successful, we couldn't reach camp 1 and had to return back. Congratulations and cheers on your sumit
Wonderful film and story. I really appreciated the respect you showed for Pete Boardman and Joe Tasker. Great mountaineers and great writers. I would recommend their books to anyone as not only fine climbing literature, but fine literature period. Congrats on your ascent.
I love it when the history of the FA team(s) gets rolled into the story of the next or most recent ascent. It really does showcase a dedication to preserving that history and paying homage to those who came first and pioneered with minimal knowledge and far lesser technology in gear and equipment. Outstanding work, gents. Really well done! Thanks for sharing.
I agree. I am pleased they tied the history in with their own climbing story. It makes for an interesting story and pays homage to those who did it before them. I thought this was a quality short climbing film.
to see Chris Bonnington introduce this climb had me thinking of all the friends he has lost in the mountains, some of the very best climbers in the world... thank you for this piece of history, well done mates!
If you haven't read it, Joe Tasker's Savage Arena is a great book and also covers his ascent of Changabang, as well as a number of his other expeditions. One of the best accounts of high mountain adventures.
I am in awe of drive and shear will these young men have to do this. It must feel so amazing to know you are but a handful of people in the world can conquer such challenges.
What a great climb on the Shining mountain, Kudos performance you follow the footprint of legendary tasker & Boardman Outstanding and what a great climber you are.
I read The Shining Mountain several times when I was a teenager: It was very inspiring and exciting. TBH, finding this video was a treat, being one that focused on the climb, its history and execution, not on the personalities of the climbers or the spiritual meaning of climbing to them and all kind of other (excuse the implication) American BS that accompanies so many run-of-the-mill climbing documentaries. Good, solid, straight-forward and self-effacing (Kiwi) narration. I love it. (Former member of the Otago branch of NZAC.)
It is said that anything after the first ascent really doesn’t matter. But this ascent of Changabang by you three will likely be the forever exception to this. Beyond the sheer will and guts it took to make that climb, the bond and unmeasurable love you all share with each other and the mountains shines almost as bright as the mountain itself. The video is incredible, and I am thankful to have seen it. I hope you three have continued climbing together, as it’s rare to find mates like this. Cheers.
Has to be one of the premier achievements in Himalayan mountaineering. Stephen Venable ascent of the Everest Kangshun Face in1988..is definitely up there and the Central Pillar of Freney 1961 Don Whillans and Chris Bonington was a major step forward at the time. Great film.
Superb video, supreme effort. Something about the surroundings of Changabang make it something else, truly another world. Great to see Sir Chris, and excellent documentation of Joe and Pete's effort.
What a great video showing some very intense moments of climb on Rock/ Ice. Sad part for me was lack of Panorama shot from summit. A great effort and a great video. Thanks.
Amazing film. WOW ! We were fortunate to be providing complete travel arrangements for the team in India and share their success Rani Shashank -Ruck Sack Tours
Congratulations. Means so much to so many of us who are captivated by that beautiful country, that mountain and that climb. What an achievement. It made us emotional. Wishing many more summits. Do come back.
Congrats gents!! Well done. So much respect for Joe and Pete for doing this route decades ago. Imagine them handing over the gear of that era to climbers today and saying “good luck”! I think the reply might be “no thanks”!
Long ago I climbed Denali with a chap who had his sights on Changabang, but never found out if he got on an expedition or what route. Terrific film. Inspiring. Wish I could still climb. Congratulations.
Almost 50 years to the second accent. The difference in gear, technique and beta between these two eras (at a 68 year old ex-high altitude mountain, i have personal experience with both) is beyond comprehension. The first ascent has got to be listed as among of the boldest and more visionary ascents of all time. I am awed!
Congrats guys. I have read both Pete and Joe's books, brutal is right. Can't wait to get back to the Himalayas, but I think I'll just stick to trekking peaks.
At the end of what was a pretty average day 1 2024 after a shitty 2023 yu guys, what you have done, who you are , and what you have achieved has inspired and nurtured and kindled my desire to push on in life. Know tht sounds a bit full on but I just feel good and hopefull and happy after watching this and hearing your story. Thank you so much!
Amazing stuff, I envy your skill and the fact that it enabled you to experience such a mountain, such a route and be a part of climbing history, on the footsteps of giants.
Nice to see what you actually went through - it's always understated in conversation. Sounds like it was miserable and beautiful in equal measure. Great farking effort
Increciible. but vou nevver expressed how fantasticly beauitful it is. I am 84 never could do ten meters what you did. You must love the mountainl@ Tell Us.!!!
So enjoyed this vid and the fact that your team summited. Always fascinated by returned servicemen climbers from WW1 who took to alpine climbing with relish, presumably wanting a 'peak experience' that didn't involve mass carnage on the battlefront, George Mallory included. Who knows what demons they were battling, let alone war injuries, and whether dicing with death lured them on.
A very beautiful route and a great climb! However, it should be noted that there are already a dozen difficult routes on the mountain, some of which have been nominated for the Piolet d'Or. I hope that someday they too will be honored with a second ascent.

Спасибо за совет! Хочется прочесть эту книгу!
Fantastic achievement lads, the fact that this hasn't been repeated in 46 years speaks for itself. Bravo, gentlemen.
What a climb! Hats off for your grit, determination and skill
I'm scared of heights. I can't climb a ladder to a gutter on a house. But I love these videos. It made me sick just looking at it. Well done.
me too i cant climb to my house roof
amazing film - thanks for the psyche
Can always trust Nick to film New Zealand’s best alpine pictures. Fantastic film.
Y'all are just built different. Just looking at that west face of Changabang gives me chills. Well done!
Joe tasker and Pete Boardman were definitely the ones I looked up to .
Pete and Joe was such a strong willed partnership, even Dougal Haston and Doug Scott, thought the West Wall was too steep!
I am in awe of drive and shear will these young men have to do this. It must feel so amazing to know you are but a handful of people in the world can conquer such challenges.
Eveery time I see a walk in fridge I think of Joe Tasker.'s commitment to Alpine climbing

Rani and her team at Rucksack are great to work with. We highly recommend them!
Thanks for upload a hard worked summit indeed !
Why do we climb mountains? Because in the time we are on the mountain, we get to be part of that mountains greatness.
Loved this, decent blokes, beautiful mountains, great story, what’s not to like?
