Reading these comments about Neds age and being past his fighting days....Are you all forgetting ser barristan selmys age yet he is still considered one of the best swordsmen, and also im suprised jaime had so much confidence going into this fight(not talking about the book) because other than us, the audience, jaime thinks that ned had beaten arthur dayne previously..... all in all my own opinion i dont think jaime had outmatched ned at all in this scene, infact i think neds skills suprised jaime, and thats why the guard had stabbed ned....... just a thought?
ASSASSIN'S GAMERS Well, not exactly, ned was not the eldest in his family therefore until the death of his older brother did he know he had to rule, by then Ned was already known as a better than average swordsman, but i agree, he was never barristan selmy level or most deffinitely never near ser arthur daynes level.
There are some things to note about the difference between Ned and Jaime. Ned was a battlefield warrior, Jaime was a duelist. Ned to Jaime is like the Hound to Brienne. The Hound would clearly peform better than Brienne in the midst of battle, but Brienne trumps the Hound in a one on one duel. Also note that Ned wasn't using Ice, his valerian steel weapon of choice.
I think the show's character are different in terms of strength than the books. Barristan was indeed surrounded by people at one point in the books and cleaved through them with ease, while in the show it ended the way we saw. Also Jaime, who at this point of the story is considered among the best with Barristan and Loras Tyrell, is strong but not legendary. I think Jaime had admiration for Ned, who in the books was average at fighting, also because he took down the Sword of the Morning, which was in the Kingsguard when he started serving. Anyways in the show the two's strength is much more similar
The Hound vs Brienne and Brienne's victory over Sandor Clegane was solely down to Sandor being underfed and an infected wound. Arya mentions him slowing down an episode or two earlier after receiving the bite wound. I'm not at all saying Brienne is weak. According to book-canon she's one of the best defensive swordsmen in Westeros. However, of the two, Jaime respected Sandor's fighting skill far more than Brienne's. The Strongboar of House Crakehall promised his lady the Hound's head and Jaime outright thinks that despite the Strongboar and the Hound being equally matched in height and strength, the Hound was much faster than his size ought to allow and fights with a savagery that Crakehall could never match.
Go Ned... Holds his own here in this version of the fight, I think he is starting to get the upper hand right at the end and you can see it in Lannisters face.
I loved Jory, too, but didn't he die a little too easily? I mean, I'm sure Jaime is a better fighter than him, but once Jory engaged Jaime, it took like seriously about five seconds for Jaime to kill him. JORRRRRRRRRYYYYYY!!!!!
+Ryan Peterson Ya but Jaime there is literally like 3 people that could compete with Jaime in Westeros. Think about it like Mike Tyson in his prime squaring off with some guy that had 6 or 7 pro fights
Short fights are more realistic, one wrong move and you're dead. Jory made the wrong move to move into a sword lock and letting Jaime pull the lock past him, right into dagger range.. Jory are good, but not many could manage such a fluid dagger strike while in a lock like Jaime did. Jory didn't expect such a well managed move, and died due to his mistake. rip
Al right, when i saw this i thought Ned had the adventage because I was a Stark fan but know it seems to be a fair combat, also it seems that Jaime had fun
I thought this was a Great scene. In the books, all the great swordsmen are portrayed as Jaimie, the Hound, Brienne, and Ser Barristan. But if Ned can hold his own with Jaime, he must not be getting the credit he deserves.
he had nothing to lose, they started it, he was just defending himself ... one possibility they'd all go after him and he'd die second way he would mention their dead master, how there's no sense on their mission and maybe they would just go
Jaime was playing with him. Eddard is no slouch with a sword, but hes old and well past his fighting days. Jaime on the other hand is easily in the top 5 of best swordsmen in Westerous and in his physical prime.
Because Ned is an honorable and likable guy, everyone wants to believe that also translates to being a top swordsman. Jamie was the better man here. All that aside, none of them should be mentioned in the same sentence as Dayne, who's in a league of his own. Cheers
Man I don't know about the books but in the show Jaimi definitely wasn't dominating the fight like so many people want to claim. He starts out playfully, true enough, but look at his face from 2:14 to about 2:24 - he's grimacing and exerting himself to a surprising degree for someone who's "toying" with his opponent. And look at his face from 2:24 until Ned is stabbed - he looks surprised that he's having to fight this hard. I'm not saying Ned is better but FFS Ned is an old man and Jaimi is apparently the greatest warrior in westeros (at this time) in his fucking PRIME. I don't understand how anyone can see this as Jaimi dominating the fight..
Jaime didnt "dominate" this fight per se. He was surprised by Ned, because Ned has more experience, specially at war. But Ned would've likely end up losing, because he's not the better swordsman. He's just the better man.
In the books jaime kills his horse and the fall of the horse breaks neds leg. There's no fight. Ned's men get slayed with not much fight, they are all caught of guard and they arrest ned on the spot.
@IndianaHenryJones20 I'm going from the book, George Martin described Ned as a "competant" swordsman, Ser Barristan couldn't beat Jaime anymore due to the fact that he's getting on in years, Jaime against Barristan in his prime wouldn't stand a chance, however Jaime defeated Selmy in the Hand's Tourney
@Lorhechapol no. there are probably equal. Ser Barristan Selmy was the best warrior during the civil war and Ned was consider to be the second. Jamie Lannister was best in Westeros only because those two retaired from tournament fights.
@cmstophe Yes it is, those 3 could easily 5 v 1 in a typical battle, they were the best swordsmen of the realm by far, fighting against them and escaping with your life is a great feat, 2 to 1 odds aren't that great, it's likely those odds were shortened rather quickly anyway.
Bueno, no necesariamente fue así según el libro, Eddar Stark se rompió la pierna cuando cae su caballo y este lo plasta. No pelea directamente con el M4t4reyes... Pero estuvo bueno su enfrentamiento en la serie de HBO
Where did that come from, that idea that Ned is an old man ? He's only a few years older than Jaime. Ever heard of Barristan cut-five-of-you-like-carving-a-cake Selmy ?
That doesn’t make any sense. If anything, Selmey’s stats would indicate he would cut through them like water, in his prime. And Ned- if he is 39, is still past his bodies prime because while that’s not old, 29 is closer to a peak, plus he hasn’t fought in years leaving him to rusty, out of shape, and lacking that eye of the tiger he had during war.
@Lorhechapol Oh I agree, theres no doubt he is a class above Ned as a swordsman. Ned is a scrapper however and although not be as skilled as Jaime he knows how to win a fight. The way it is portrayed here seems to suggest they are cancelling each other out, so to speak.
I think Jamie underestimated Ned. That's why he was smiling an such when the fight first began, but as it progresses it dawns on him Ned is giving him a run for his money. I think if the fight progressed it would have got nasty, but I think Jamie age would have given him the edge. It pains me to say so,cause I'm a hardened Stark of winterfell. ...but two handed Jamie an Jon..well that's a fight I would like to have seen

Not sure what Hollywood thinks is accomplished by slashing away with a sword at a body part that's covered by plate armor.
