    Hey everybody, Ryan here at etrailer. Today, on our 2022 Toyota RAV4, we're gonna be showing you how to install the curt trailer hitch receiver. But before we do that, why don't we check it out and make sure that this is the right hitch for you When it comes to the RAV4, really popular SUVs and people use them to do a lot of different things. So, if it we're me and I was thinking about putting a trailer hitch on the back of it, a couple things come to my mind personally. The first one being, you know, how versatile is the hitch gonna be Can I use it to tow Can I use it for accessories and everything else And what else would come to my mind would be how's it gonna look Because honestly, these RAV4s, uh, pretty sporty looking now, at least in my opinion. And so, I would want a hitch that would look good.
    And with this particular one here it's gonna kind of check both those boxes in terms of what you can do with it, and the appearance of it. Something that I do wanna address is, you know, with the hitch in place, is your lift gate assist feature going to work And the answer is, yes, you're just gonna have to kick to either side of the hitch and it'll open up like it should. Now it might take you a few tries to kind of find that sweet spot, and, you know, find what works the best. But once you do, the hatch will open up. With this being a class three hitch, It is gonna have that two-inch by two-inch receiver to opening.
    Super common size, a lot of different things are gonna work with it. At the end, here, there is going to be a reinforced collar for a little bit of extra support. And the hitch is going to use a standard five-eighths pen and clip, but keep in mind, pen and clip don't come with the hitch. If you need one, not really a big deal. You can always grab it right here at etrailer.
    It is going to have loop style safety chain openings, and they're gonna provide us with more than enough space to use just about any size hook that our trailer might have. As far as the hitch's weight capacities go, it's going to have some pretty high numbers. The maximum gross tongue weight rating is gonna be 600 pounds, and that's gonna be the amount of weight pushing down on the hitch. So, pretty high numbers, should be able to use just about any size bike rack or cargo carrier that you'd want to, for example. As far as the hitches maximum gross trailer weight rating goes that's gonna be 4,000 pounds, and that's gonna be the amount of weight that is pulling on the hitch.
    So the weight of your trailer, plus anything that you might have on it. This can be used with a weight distribution system which is a separate component. And what happens whenever you use that, is it's going to keep your RAV4 and your trailer level whenever you're towing it down the road. So if you plan on kind of pulling some bigger stuff around, maybe a camper something along them lines, that might be worth looking into. With that said, though, even with the weight distribution the weight ratings are going to remain the same at 600 and 4,000. Now I do wanna mention something that I always like to recommend is it's never a bad idea just to grab your Toyota's owner's manual. That way you can make sure your RAV4 can pull that much weight safely. With that said, if you do plan on towing a trailer around you are gonna want the lights to work on it, you know, that way people around you know what's going on and you'll be safe and legal. And to accomplish that you can always grab some trailer wiring. Something that I do want to talk about is just do a quick comparison of this hitch compared to some of the other ones available, cause there is quite a few of 'em, and in terms of appearance, they're all gonna look very similar. Honestly, the big difference is gonna be the finish of the hitch. So, it's really going to depend on what one you think looks the best. Honestly, I think the curt, the one that we have here right now, does look pretty good. It has that glossy black finish and it kind of matches the plastic on her bumper. So, it does have a factory type appearance to it. And other than that, you know, the hitches are gonna be very similar, um, the Draw-Tite and the EcoHitch those are gonna have a little bit higher weight capacities. So, if you do plan on kind of, you know, pushing everything to the limit, or close to it, those might be worth looking into. But at the end of the day, it's just gonna depend on what you're looking to do. So I'm gonna give you a couple of measurements, and you can use these to help figure out which hitch mount accessories will work best. If you go from the ground to the top, inside edge of the receiver tube

    Just FYI - my 2019 RAV4 Hybrid did not have a towing hook. But the video on installation worked just fine. I ended up using a floor jack to lift the hitch into rough position before threading the screws. With the right amount of swearing and a couple taps with a BFH it went right into place.

      No self-respecting tool kit would be complete without the BFH!

    Did uou reuse the bolts you took out initially? And added washers? Or was the hardware kit included with the hitch?

    • @etrailer
      @etrailer  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The bolts that were removed were for the tow loop/tie down bracket that is removed and NOT replaced. The hitch includes the four bolts and washers needed to install the hitch.

    Great video. Lining up the bolts on the passenger side was a royal pain. Took us about 30 minutes total time. If you had a bit more room on the passenger side this would be a ten minute job.

    After completing install my trailer lights still did not work. I was told that if you don't have a "tow package" your fuse box will lack a tow relay and fuse. Where can I locate this to check? Any help appreciated.

    • @etrailer
      @etrailer  ปีที่แล้ว

      All of the 2022 Toyota RAV4 have the same package. We recommend checking your ground to be sure that it is good enough for the system. This is usually the issue that we have seen to be the issue. You also want to check to be sure that your fuse is inserted or didn/t blow.

      Are you speaking of the tool used to remove the sticker covering the hole in the frame? The tool is an offset razor scraper. We don't offer them but you can easily find them by doing a Google search. Hope that helps!

      @etrailer  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We used a 17mm socket with a 10 inch extension to remove the tow hook. To properly torque the hitch bolts on the passenger side, you'll likely need a 19mm crow's foot on your torque wrench, because there isn't enough clearance to get a socket in there.

    Curt 13416 hitch product
    Could it be a defect?
    If you try to mount it under the exhaust
    If one side goes in, the other side doesn't go in..
    If you fasten both sides hard, it's tight and doesn't move.
    I don't think the product is defective or the clearance doesn't fit.

    • @etrailer
      @etrailer  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What you've got going on isn't a defect with the hitch. When the hitch is manufactured, the side plates of the hitch are made of steel that is much more flexible than the rest of the hitch. This allows the hitch to flex along with the vehicle as needed. However, sometimes during shipping and handling the side plates can get slightly flexed out of position. It sounds like that's what happened in this case. The good news is that the hitch can easily be flexed back into position, as you can see in the article we'll link for you below:

      When you get the different trim levels you can increase the weight cap. If you get the adventure trim with the TV-AWD and the 2.5L 4 cylinder you can bump it up to 3.5k towing cap. All said and done with any vehicle, the owner's manual needs to be consulted and verified. www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Hitch/CURT/C13416.html

    You couldn’t give the torque value for this hitch on the Rav 4 ??????

    • @etrailer
      @etrailer  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a valid question. We don't publish or broadcast the torque ratings because the hitch manufacturers have been known to source the hardware from different places over time. This is why we refer folks to the install instructions, which list the most current torque values. You can check that out on page # 3 of the install instructions that we've linked for you. Rav4 can't tow any way near 4000 lbs. 2000 or less.

    • @etrailer
      @etrailer  ปีที่แล้ว

      Some RAV4s when properly equipped can tow up to 3,500lbs. As always the addition of a hitch receiver does not increase payload or towing capacities. You still need to adhere to the owner's manual and be away what the weakest link in your chain is so you do not overload it. At the 3:05 mark he does state to check your owner's manual to make sure your vehicle can pull that much weight safely.
