Will It RUN and DRIVE After 32 Years Parked? 1973 Nova 4 Door

  • Will it run and drive? This 50 year old Nova has been sitting for 32 years. We're confident that this car hasn't been messed with, as it sat untouched for so long and appears to have only had one owner since being bought new in our HOME TOWN. This car belongs to my buddy Kyle Shadden (be sure to check out his channel at / @shaddenmotorsports .
    He first saw the car nearly 20 years ago on a random ride-around adventure near Chattanooga, Tennessee. It was sitting under a carport, and he fell in love with it. He finally ended up having the chance to own it, and he gave me the opportunity to get it running and driving since he knows Carlee and I love rescuing old cars and getting them back on the road.
    What we found is this car is a 1973 Chevrolet Nova Custom four-door sedan. It has its original 307ci V8 with Rochester two-barrel carburetor and TH350 automatic transmission. It is showing 34,000 miles on the odometer and I have no reason to believe it's 134k or 234k. This survivor probably never went further than Hamilton or Rhea country. It was bought new at Brown Chevrolet in our hometown of Dayton, TN. The green paint was quite common on Novas, but this one came with black interior, which is pretty unusual.
    This car is 100 percent complete, and we were pleased with a free-spinning engine. It gave us hope that it would be an easy job. After a new fuel pump and 5 gallon jug, it gave the Nova new life. We have plans to take it further, but this video documents our initial inspection as well as our efforts to make it run and drive for the first time in over 30 years. Stay tuned for a clean up video, where we'll dig through the car's contents and also shine up the original paint and get the brakes working a little better.

    The Smog/Malaise Era cars are the HOT project/build now, especially the muscle cars, because they are still cheap. For almost the price of a 72 or older Roller you can buy and build a 73-78 and build it and they don't care if it's a 2 door or 4 door because most people aren't doing full on builds. one of the 20 somethings I work with just bought a 75 Malibu 4 door, that runs and drives, he just going to clean it up and drive it. He and his wife have 2 small kids and we were talking about how expensive it was he had just paid off his car and I told him if he wanted to save even more money than go find a classic car and sell his car and use that money to clean it up, get it running really good and just drive it. He paid $1500 for the Malibu and it didn't need much more than a a deep cleaning, some new fluids, gaskets, new shocks and ball joints and a new paint job. He sold his 2018 charger for 13k, the mechanical stuff is done and were getting ready to roll it in my shop next weekend and throw a Oliver Green tractor paint paint job on it and he hasn't even spent half of the 13k he sold his Charger for, and that includes the $1500 he paid for the car. I;m glad this new generation is doing stuff like this.

    In my home town there was a little old lady that had a dark green 1970 Nova that was a 4 door and her and her husband bought it new in late 1969 and drove it all the years but never in winter or in rain and after her husband died in the mid 80's she would only use it to go to get food and go to church and back in 1997 or 98 I knocked on her door to see if she would sell it and she said the boy next door was going to get it because he would do a bunch of things for her and he liked the car that she promised him the car but it was a real clean car and that 1973 Nova reminded me of the 70 4 door Nova a lil old lady had in my hometown.

    Defrosters didn't work very well back than and cars usually didn't have a rear defroster, except for the old style blower mounted below the package tray ordered. So you needed to have plenty of ice scrapers on hand because they'd often break while trying to scrape the ice off your windows

    When starting a engine that hasnt been started in 31 years make sure never to pull the plugs and squirt oil or marvel down the cyl and let it soak. That way the rust on the rings and cylinders will score and destroy the rings and cylinder walls and help seat them in properly .Never crank over after oil in clyinders with plugs out and get oil pressure either that way you will score the bearings and score them too when the engine fires up .This will help with proper bearing seating and increase clearance between the 50 year old rod bearings and crank journals . Good job !

    So back in 93 I should have parked Grandmaw's 75 Nova under the car port instead of selling it for $300? No rust, a little bondo drivers door. 20,000 miles on the odometer (Know it was 120,00 as I was driving it and told the grandkid it was a new car.) 6 cyl. 4 door, broken hood spring and dead battery tires bald. I remember breaks at 80,000 water pump at 90,000 spark plugs once or twice. Wonder where that car is now?

      I don’t know much about birds but they drive me crazy. Between that and the dogs, (and our three kids) it’s constant noise at our house haha.

    Don't you need to lubricate the cylinders a bit before firing it up with rotten oil in it?

    • @HotRodHoarder
      @HotRodHoarder  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Probably so. I'm not so worried about the old oil...it's probably better than most new oil these days. But yeah, I should've squirted some oil in the cylinders and let it sit for a little bit.

    Stupidest thing I've ever seen subjecting your daughter to what could have happened; Was it worth it? I'm glad you got the 73 Nova going, But I would have never taken that chance with my daughter, & if something had happened You would have never forgiven yourself.
