Well, "Andreea", "Zed", in all the time I've ever spent on You Tube I have NEVER sat for 3 plus hrs. and watched ANY vid. or any series of vids in one sitting as I did here just now tonight! This was THE BEST spoonie vid I have ever watched!! And I've watched lots as a learner! In this vid Andreea so eloquently and thoroughly covered every single question I've ever come across in my 4-5 yrs of carving spoons. So wish I'd seen it 4 yrs ago, it would've saved me so much time experimenting and trying!!! Thank you both, from Andreea and Zed, from A to Z (see what I did there...*G*) this video meant so much to this old boy!!! ~ Jeremy.

Hi Jeremy, that is one of the biggest compliments both me and Andreeea could ever receive. I sicnerely thank you for your kind words and for watching this entire video, it really means a lot! Stay blessed my friend ~Peace~

@@andreeagrad Well there was so much in this vid. that I needed to pay extra attention to that I watched half of it again, in a few select spots that were especially meaningful to me. Small bag of popcorn this time around...*G* Andreea again, thank you for being so specific and sharing each step with so much information. "You need to be mindful" is nearly a catch phrase as it says so much! Perfect! I did go down to my shop and create a spoon from your shared diagram over this last day or so and it was close enough that it brought out the need to re-watch this again. Got a lot of questions answered too and still need to keep on "keeping on"/practice to fine tune my ways. Thanks so much, again... My spoons will be more "delicate" and nicer looking thanks to all that was shown here!

And to add a bit to what Jeremy mentioned, what you are doing Andreea, whether you realize it or not, is highlighting the absolute NEED to FOCUS when doing almost anything with which the slightest distraction could well ruin an otherwise perfect project. It took my many years of trying to do different things which caught my interest including forge work, leather and rawhide braiding of horse gear and other braided items, boat building, [I barely survived my 1st try at building a kayak and also a flat bottomed dingy, both of which danged near got me drowned]. I have spent years working with wood, building kitchen cabinets and a solid butcher block kitchen counter which was in 4 sections and spanned almost 28 lineal feet of my new kitchen, and also found time to learn to repair antique clocks from little mantle clocks to cuckoo clocks and on into the different types of floor clocks including grandmother and grandfather clocks. My latest hobby turned "redux" took me back to my teen years when I first learned to cut both rawhide and tanned leather "strings" and braid different kinds of horse gear and dog leashes and collars, and such items. [My dogs wore the coolest "bling" in town!] Now I am teaching myself to build leather goods such as wallets, business card cases, handgun holsters, knife sheaths, and too many other items to mention here! As I approach my 80th year on this rock we all call our "home", I have learned that without patience and the focus to stick with a project no matter what may get in one's way, I can now understand what some of my mentors, through these past 65 or so years, have been trying to impart on me.
And so, my journey continues, and I wake each morning with the excitement of a new day and something new to be learned. I can say, beyond any shadow of doubt, that I have spent the last 3 hours or more learning about more about patience and focus and the drive for perfection than at any other time in my life! You have reinforced what I have known for years and have always tried to utilize in whatever way I could to do better than I did "yesterday". It has taken me through most of my life of trying and missing my mark to put these few traits to use together and arrive at the level I am working today. Thank you and I hope that you will continue to make more videos about your experiences with knife and wood.

Beautiful craftsmanship Andreea. I’m only a little more than half way through. I’ve seen so many of your finished spoons and even video of you putting the finishing touches on. Nice to see it from the very beginning. I never would have guessed you started carving with an axe. I has assumed it was all knife work but I can see why the axe is so helpful. You are not only a skilled craftsman, you also have a remarkable ability to narrate and explain every nuance of what you are doing down to the smallest detail which gives so much more depth and insight to the process. I look forward to watching the rest.

I would echo the positive comments already made. This is one of the best videos on spoon carving on TH-cam. The skill and attention to detail is self evident in the quality of the spoon but for me, as a beginner, the narrative that covers both what is being done but most importantly WHY is is being done is so valuable and I think what sets this video as the #1 instructional spoon carving video on TH-cam. Well done and thank you to all involved.

A lady spending a whole day making a single wooden spoon using hand tools.
Its a hilarious concept until you realise that ....
    1. barely anyone knows these skills these days
    2. If the factories suddenly stopped, she would be your only one-stop-shop for wooden spoons in a 100 mile radius.
    3. these are skills that need to be preserved and recorded.

Quite in line with my experience of Romanians so far in my life your command of the English language is a joy to behold! I have listened to your tutorial whilst working on a pair of chairs for a customer and have barely looked at the screen yet everything I've heard has made sense and I've understood what you're doing and where you are in the process; I'm not sure if you've ever been asked to give a lesson on the radio on how to do this but really I think you could. Not only that but your voice has kept me calm when I've been in a couple of more stressful moments in my own work. Bravo.xx

Just of the back of my comment here it occurs to me that this would be a fantastic activity and hobby for someone who is partially sighted or blind the close, cohesive (as most spoons are made in one piece) tactile and tangible nature of it is ideal I would have thought.

That's very nice work and I learned a few things to better my carving but I wanted to just say that if anyone wants to have a cheap but sharp one just go to a farrier and buy a few hoof knives. They're virtually the same but cheaper for those that can't buy the more expensive knives that are hand made and usually very expensive.

Here in South Africa the Zulu culture have a traditional beer called "Umqombothi" brewed in an earthenware pot. The "African style" spoon with that lip is so you can hook it to the side of the earthen pot.
I think it has to do with cleanliness more than easy to access, but i really am not sure. Calabash scoops are mostly used and they float in the pot a carved spoon not so much?? 😂
