Thanks for the video. I’m cutting trees and wanting to use some of the better looking wood for projects like this. Like a beautiful black walnut. I don’t have the money to pour into a wood shop with all the fancy tools. So seeing you and what tools to use helps a ton. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much Zed and Dan! These kind of videos you created, got me into spooncarving which made me meeting new friends around the world and become a huge hobby of mine
You are SO good to us, Zed! So many brilliant instructions you have released recently. I enjoy every one of them. Quality of filming is supberb and so are the quality of the content and the instructors. THANKS!!!
This was one of the best videos that I have seen in a long time. If this video had only been out when I started researching green woodworking six years ago.
Sincerely appreciate your kind words James and full credit goes to Dans excellent tuition and demonstration. Indeed i'm hoping these videos will fill that gap when it comes to detailed video tutorials covering all aspects of green woodworking ~Peace~
Another great tutorial! I have carved one super dry oak bowl. Just about snapped a couple of gouges. Will try green soon. Love the philosophy Dan encorporates in his teaching.
Indeed carving with dry wood generally involves a different process and i'm confident you'll find carving with greenwood a more njoyale process, let alone be easier on your tools! ~Peace~
Absolutely incredible video, as usual very informative. Thank you for sharing this with us! I was surprised to hear him say he knocks on or taps the wood to hear the sound difference in regards to drying, as I too do this. Very great video!
Awesome video!! I hope to carve a bowl as beautiful as yours are one day. Thank you so much for sharing your skills with us. Now I'm going to watch the one on spoons 😊
I love to see a UK based bowl carver using tools inspired by the bent knives used by the Pacific Northwest of America native carvers such as the kestrel tools bent knife and the internal bevel hook knife. It would be great to see those tools being used to their full potential though. They are wonderfully useful and can be used in so many different ways that are largely ignored by European style carvers. Great video by the way.
Hi Trevor, indeed there's lots to be learnt by traditional carvers in the US, alas we dont have enough exposure to it on these shores to make that feasable. Social media is slowly change that though bit by bit ~Peace~
Appreciate the kind words and for watching Liam, I'll run the idea by Dan to see what he says! That being said, i'm not sure if you're aware, but I have previously fimed a very detailed tutorial on split hazel basketry - th-cam.com/video/_4iGsVU9E98/w-d-xo.html
@@Zedoutdoors Thank you Zed. I have watched your video with Lewis Goldwater twice. Your work has really transformed how accessible these skills are. Thanks again.
Zed I only has a busted gouge I fixed up was rusty too I can't find any gouges mine was given to me by a friend whose father passed away as for dog leg gouge all I can say is dang . Looks so satisfying to use as I said I has difficulty finding them gouges or any for that matter I prefure antique tools as steel is better and the nostalgia 👍🇬🇧🐾🦊
I know right! not sure if you've seen the spoon carving video i've filmed with him, but he also uses straight carving knives with both hands too, amazing skills ~Peace~
Great video as always! I'm getting really inspired to carve my own bowls and kuksas. Is there anyway to order some of the tools (like the big spoon- knife or a scorp) outside of the UK? Thanks again for these awesome videos and tutorials, they are really appreciated!
I sincerely appreciate your kind words Matthias and it's awesome to hear you are considering carving your own bowls/kuksas. Outside of the UK I would highly recommend this tool maker who is based in Portugal, tell him I sent you over and he will look after you - belzeboocrafts.blogspot.com/
33.00 adze work - good video - you could always try rehandling the adze with a back sweep which will clear your swing at the back and give a bit more rotation or swing, and it will bring the edge onto the wood at a different and more easily variable presentation might work with that make of adze it worked with mine, pretty easy eye to fit to as well, Anyway pretty good stuff
Appreciate the suggestion Daniel thank you, I have videos planned on Adze in the coming months that will hopefully shed more light on the tool as it's not often spoken about ~Peace~
@@Zedoutdoors hello Zed hope all is well, that would be interesting to see more adze videos, ive used them for a few years, pretty useful! I’ve followed your channel for a time now, the kuksa ones in particular are the most interesting but there’s an epic one building a shave horse which I doff my woolly hat to you for producing , inspired me to make one myself which was terrible, but fundamentally works 🧐 All of your videos have fascinating content and are well useful every one has some kind of new or different technique or tips so pretty impressive, and the techniques are all definite practiced skill sets or seem that way, which is of far better value for learning than the average bushcraft youtube video, as the attention to detail in tool usage and safety is necessarily involved as you probably know , all mindful stuff, of which I need more practice ! Nice one hope to see more 👍🏼

This guy is dressed like every Scooby-Doo character simultaneously and the crazy part is that it actually works.
lol I thought the same when I met up with Dan, that being he's an uber chilled individual who lives for his craft ~Peace~

I saw some guys using some roughing gouge with some depth to carve the bowl. Which is the best way? Gouge or adge?
They are both effective, Adze is typically more for roughing out whereas the gouge you can be more refined ~Peace~

Could you please give exact description of chisel that is being used, thanks
Hi Mike, tools have been referenced in the description of this video ~Peace~
Where does he find his wood, does he find them out wandering or does he buy them in?
Mostly from tree surgeons whom you build relationships with over time ~Peace~
Sounds like a really nice fellow!
