Harkening back to the start of the Cretien era, and the prosperity all of Canada enjoyed for over 2 decades following the oil sands accord, Smith has proposed uniting Canada with national projects like coast to coast oil and gas pipelines and doubling oil sands production. The silence from the Liberal leadership candidates is deafening;-)

from one old Curmudgeon to another well said. 70 years have I been Canadian and the last 9 years under Trudeau were more damaging to Canadian oil and gas than the years under Trudeau senior. Their preoccupation with climate hysteria hobbled the oil sector and is the root cause for our problems today.

Great Pod as usual. I hear the "We get it, Alberta has been screwed" comments but I don't think many in the political class truly understand how deep it goes. First off "The West" goes from the boarders of Winnipeg , to Vancouver. Bilingualism is imposed here , not embraced. Equalization payments are highly resented, many people work in the resource economy. Liberal Gun confiscation has severely angered many , pipelines are not controversial here and Carbon taxes are highly despised. National unity is about to be tested and two fault lines are clear in Canada right now. Odds of the country being in its current configuration in 20 years is about 50-50 IMHO.

    • @handlewithcare50

@@handlewithcare50 I agree ,everyone takes it on the chin from time to time. But I stand by my statement. I believe if the PQ get elected in Quebec, (they are leading in the polls). and they hold another referendum, as promise, things will be very different this time in The West. There is ZERO appetite in Western Canada for any concessions to Quebec, in fact there is a high level of hostility. I can foresee a badly handled response to Trumps tariffs, anger in Alberta, and another PQ referendum causing Confederation to look very different in 20 years. Like I wrote my bet is 50-50

No one on this panel understands the oil industry. If Canada cuts off oil to the US or has export taxes applied the US will get the oil they need from other countries and there will be no comeback from that. Alberta would have zero customers for our oil. That would kill Alberta and would do massive damage to Canada.

2008 was painful for many Canadians - especially millennials who faced big unemployment numbers, stagnant wages, and rising housing costs.
Who felt good about most of Carney’s “successes” - the very wealthy people at the top, that likely want him as the PM now.

I really do hate that it's a reality in Canadian politics that if anyone in Canada gets a non perfect deal it's Ontario's fault no matter what. I get to sit here as an Ontarian and be ignored by not just my provincial politicians but also consistently attacked/blamed by the federal ones. While the federal politicians bend over backwards for Quebec or "the west" aka Alberta, outside of the rare hey lets show up in Windsor for the auto sector or the show up to the city of Toronto to do something for them (or people who commute there) and say some nice words so we can go back to ignoring Ontario. The most a non local politician has ever done to try to advertise to people in my area is Trudeau who showed up to a parade and then left, never came back and forgot us. Despite us being such a large percentage of the population it feels insane that so many people in Ontario are not just ignored but blamed by the rest of the country. And if we aren't being blamed it's always a wait on your issues for something for Quebec or Alberta, or this niche thing for select people in Toronto. Because either we want Toronto votes or Quebec/Alberta need this or they might rage and leave Canada.... also anything that might address you needs to be overhauled in order to better fit Quebec with infinite exemptions for them until it doesn't happen cause it takes to long because of Quebec or it gets voted down by Quebec anyways

I don't know where I fall on the Danielle Smith question, but saying that she is the primary actor weakening the Canadian response to Trump is outrageous!
We have the most lame duck possible PM and a prorogued parliament. Even worse, Trump personally loathes the PM and one of the two candidates to replace him (Freeland). This is cooked up in a lab to make us as vulnerable as possible!
All of this because Trudeau and Singh refused to put country over their own interests (being in charge / pension, respectively) and their parties refused to do their jobs and hold their leaders accountable.
Trudeau should have resigned after St. Paul's. When he didn't, his party should have forced him out then. Singh should have called an election in the fall. When he refused, his party should have demanded it. And it was totally imperative for all parties - once the danger of Trump to cross border trade was clear - to make sure that Canada had an election before January 21st so that we would have a functioning government with a mandate.
