There is a massive difference between calling a footy game on radio as opposed to television. Rex Hunt proved that back in the day. He was a sensational entertainer when it came to radio commentary- however, he simply couldn’t translate that to television simply because television commentary requires the utmost accuracy as the viewer can see the vision to match the commentary, where as radio doesn’t have that pressure (as people can’t see what is going on, therefore- I can understand why it would be easier to get more hyped up in radio commentary as you have to convey that to people who cannot see with their own eyes what is happening. I think that in television- there is more pressure to get the call right.
Correct. Radio callers are telling you what you can't see whereas tv callers are telling you what you can see. My favorite is Jobe Watson who's expertise is telling you what you just saw with your own eyes.
I’ve noticed the same about JB and BT after listening to a few of their calls on the radio, I think they are a lot dryer on 7 because they are under a bit more pressure from 7 to keep the calls ‘family friendly’ (think of BT’s call of Boyd’s goal in the granny). I think Channel 7 have got the screws on them tight, no so much on the radio though which is why they show more flair on triple m.
This is absolute truth. I’ve heard Hutchy and Damo (Damien Barrett, who is a friend and long time colleague of theirs) mention countless times on their Sounding Board podcast just how much channel 7 hamstrings the pair’s natural flamboyance and quirky calling. Whereas TripleM pretty much lets them fly their freak flag as high as they want without offending anyone. There’s a reason why apps like SEN Sync exist - a lot of people prefer the much looser, far less restricted commentary of radio.
JB, BT, Kelli, Russell are absolute trash. Matt Hill needs to be doing the prime time games, JB is a snore and always says the sh!ttest things like naming all the private schools. Howie is another joke get rid of him.
I don't care if women are or aren't involved in AFL, but why do people say they "need to be involved in AFL" there's no reason they HAVE to be, they have AFLW. Just pick the best people.
Channel 7 actually has a half decent commentator- just that he is doing the wrong job. Mark Soderstrom does boundary riding in Adelaide but he is actually a good commentator when calling games for local football.
Interesting point you made about JB and BT when they commentate on radio versus TV. For me, Rex Hunt on the radio and his team had it nailed. And Bruce on the TV always had passion for the game he was commentating on. True professionals they were
Being a radio station on an FM band and the audience tending to be more in the 20s-40s demographic, JB and BT are able to be somewhat looser in their calls of games. When they commentate on Ch7, they do have to be more reserved due to the broader audience groups - kids, teens, +50s.
Dermott is by far the worst. So much unnecessary bullshit delivered. Haven’t got a clue what he’s talking about most of the time. Plus Kelly Underwood is dreadful.
On point, we all collectively have seen the drop in quality over the last decade but I swear the last few year's have been particularly bad! JB and BT show nothing but apathy and laziness, then guys who are actually decent and professional like Alister Nicholson and Mat Hill get crumbs! You are correct about Dwyane Russell, he is corney yes but he exemplifies the passion required
Really loved the vid. My only feedback that as a pies fan is I would be shocked if you could find a pies fans that thought BT was biased toward us. The barracking that goes on in a close Pies game from BT AGAINST Collingwood is a common annoyance from Pies fans. It stems from the fact that BT is still bitter that Leigh Matthews dropped him after the qualifying final in 1990 and he missed out on flag. What's intriguing though is when BT has been on the same panel as Leigh Matthews he sucks up to him like nothing else! I get if you don't follow the pies your default is to hate us. But have a listen to Richo and Hodge during Collingwood game - their hatred is just way too obvious and they are even bigger cheerleaders against the pies than BT. Compare this to Gerard Wately and huddo who are both mad Cats fan but part of the reason they are premier callers is they are totally neutral in cats game. Go and watch your mob and the Nick Davis goal that buried the cats when you knocked them out of the prelim in 06. Its like Huddo was a Swans supporter the way he called it! He musts have been gutted but stayed enthusiastic and excited for how amazing the moment was. What a pro.
BT is so biased in his calling of Pies games, especially when they're on a run and piling on unanswered goals, that my TV or radio starts oozing weird black and white substances from the speakers and the only way I can stop it is to turn it off.

Lost interest in AFL when Robert Walls and that gay reporter turned the game into a safe space. Only got worse with Anthony Hudson and then female commentators
There's no competition - the channels have no incentive to improve their product as the AFL only care about the $$$. Channels are now calling games from studios in VIC when the game is in SA - cost cutting has gone to the extreme and the AFL do not care.
Nah ur spot on mate - I used to mute the tv and sync up with whatever Radio had Rex Hunt on it, which was awesome - Gerrads pretty good too tbh but outside that, they are pretty damn poor now imo. Not sure what criteria they are using to pick voices, but it sure aint the same as it used to be.
I agree with your video. My favourite moment is Leo Barry's mark at the end of the 2005 Grand Final. I also agree that the standard of commentary has declined. Today, the commentators are to Victoriancentric, so it's hard to get unbiased calling. A good commentator remains objective and can hide the fact that he may like one team over another.
You should do a video focusing on the commentators Seven and Fox seem to always assign to the “off-Broadway” games (Jason Bennett, Matt Hill, Adam Papalia, Brenton Speed, maybe Alister Nicholson) In addition to doing typical reviews of their commentary, you could ask why they always seem to get low-key or one-sided games in dud timeslots.
Hi Boundary Rider thanks for the great video. First time viewer and it's great to have a platform about our great game and we can have a voice. Kelly Underwood I like her voice she just needs to know the players names I remember last year watching a Hawthorn game with a new player playing his first game and kept saying the wrong name how would his family and friends feel with his biggest moment in life. And I have a great idea how to bring back the State of Origin I think it's coming back into the spotlight again.
It is a big deal , and I for one cannot stand the women commentating on AFL and Cricket (Mel jones excluded) . Kelli Underwood is fingernails on the blackboard , a DIE hire , ticks two boxes , Daisy Pearce ditto , that flat delivery and teenagers voice . Also they affect the male commentary and the tone in the box as the boys have to watch what they say always , esp in cricket where the old stories are banished . Not to mention that most of the females are of a certain persuasion , not interested in men , yet happy to draw a high paycheck commenting on them . Don't get me started on the wokeness of the whole media regarding their weekly theme games , all designed to shame us into compliance on pet issues .
A room full of highly paid consultants could not have come up with the summary that you’ve just provided. Well done I truly enjoyed that and you articulated that with such passion and energy for not only the game but the commentary and the overall experience top stuff.
Dwayne Russell the worst commentator in the history of AFL. Some team is always playing for their season, their season is on the line, probably from round 2, tries to create excitement artificially in an unnecessary way, rather than just call the game. Very patronising towards lower placed teams, Gold Coast were always "the suns," never "Gold Coast." JB doesn't seem to be watching the game, misses most things and just offers what the viewers can see anyway. I prefer BT of the current callers, he can offer insights that you are not aware of, he at least watches the game and has played the game. The game itself is flatter and less exciting now than it used to be due to the stand on the mark rule, and the kick out from fullback rule, one team runs off with the ball and the other team can't do anything about it, akin to cheating and boring. The holding the ball interpretation and the change to the hands in the back rule (now backmen just wrap everything around forwards and no-one can take a mark) also haven't helped and have made the game less exciting for everyone.
I didn’t like BT with or without personality, think he makes it too much about himself. JB is the cliche king. Underwood isn’t great but def cops more than she should because she’s a woman
BT is certainly an acquired taste which I think is more suited to the Triple M environment, along with JB. The two of them on broadcast tele feel neutered and like they can't be themselves. Seven should really look at replacing at least one of them for Friday nights from next year. Agree Kelli definitely cops more than she deserves.
I’m one of those who turns the sound off when Brereton or Underwood are on. Brereton is of the opinion that he actually invented the game and has to explain it to the infants. Underwood, apart from her annoying voice, is just a string of cliches.
The presentation of the AFL is the worst of any domestic sport in the world. Other sports coverage of rugby league, basketball & cricket is just as bad.
Mate if you think AFL commentary has gone downhill, try listening to the cricket. It’s 20x worse. We’ve gone from getting iconic lines like “GOT HIM!” every wicket from legendary callers like Bill Lawry and Tony Greig, to simply “Edged…and taken” from deadshits like Howie and Isa Guha 😴😴😴 It’s made the game so much worse to watch. There’s no enthusiasm anymore, and like you said it’s just rock up, collect your pay check, and get out of there.
2:45 Ambient crowd noise. This is exactly what I want. Freedom from the over the top calls, freedom from the bias. Just crowd noise, where the microphones occasionally pick up the wonderfully colourful language of our country.
If I’m watching pity I’ll sometimes put my favourite radio commentator on and mute the tv, Tim Lane was always a big favourite of mine for footy and cricket
They are just either yell, or banter amongst themselves Cometti and mcavaney were good because they called the play, their tone and volume rising with the excitement of the play, and cometti would say something clever in the subdued moment. The commentators todays are all just "PWOAHH!! WOWWW!!" Or "a bit like you back in your playing days dermie eh?" While actual play is going in
Pretty spot on here, you’re giving a balanced perspective and not dumping on anyone like everyone on social media tends to do. The commentary definitely has fallen, but I don’t fully fault the commentators themselves because I think we have some great lineups on Fox and 7 respectively, I know full well they have the passion, drive and personality when they’re at their best and aren’t held back, but I’m led to believe the higher ups are choking the life out of it, specifically on 7, I’ve seen commentary by BT and JB on live TV years ago and on the radio, they are great, the passion and personality oozes out, but as soon as they go on national TV these days they’re stripped of what makes them great. As for Fox, they seem to give their commentators more leeway, but their main problem is repetitive phrases, specifically with Dwayne, there’s even a term called “Dwayneisms” or the “Dwayne Bingo Card” as he says the same 5-10 phrases on any given game, and every now and then he’ll come up with something new, like that Rankine call. Huddo is without a doubt the best in the bussiness right now, Montagna and Howie are underrated, and this new guy Matt Hill is great as he comes from racing commentary. As for Kelli, she is without a doubt the worst, I’ll give her props since she does try to bring the passion, but I do feel she has been propped up for AFL games mainly because she’s a woman and not because she’s any good, it seems they want to meet that diversity quoter rather than picking the best person for job, and that’s not me being anti-woman in commentary, I actually rate Abbey Holmes and Daisy Pearce since they actually do their job well, I even think Neroli Meadows is solid for the AFLW, but Kelli’s flaws always get the best of her. No one who makes that amount of mistakes should be a lead commentator for a major league, relegating her to special comments may be an option or at least get some training.
I must be the only person who didn’t like Bruce Mc. I stopped watching Friday night Footy because of his aimless commentary interrupted with useless statistics and irrelevant opinions and then change that opinion to suit the actual flow of the game. ‘’ Gee Duck, don’t you get the feeling if they just kick 5 quick sequential goals, they’re right in this. Wayne Carey , showing how to state the obvious as though it’s an original idea. BT showing the art of applying over the top drama to the smallest trivial action . Dunstall and Gary Lyon displaying the art of describing in the most complex and complicated way, what you’ve just seen, then drone on in monotone what the player should have done. Why isn’t there a course for prospective commentators to go to and learn how to do it and perhaps listen to what they sound like. Just sayin. Listen to Howie, he calls the game, that’s it. Gives us the highs and lows, no opinions ,that’s for the experts, no stats that’s for the experts.
I was watching cricket in South Africa a few years ago when there was a broadcast glitch - the picture and sound from the game were fine, but the commentary was silent. For those few precious minutes, the intelligence of the broadcast was increased.
Another issue is Foxtel don’t attend away games and call it from Melbourne. It’ll all change next year when you’ll be able to choose which commentary team you get.
When DEI (Didn't Earn It) is a factor in putting people behind the microphone, commentary will always suffer. Mistakes aside, that voice is worse than fingernails being dragged across a blackboard.
I want to become an AFL commentator because as like many people, I have a huge passion for the game. I can’t describe the amount of excitement I feel when I watch a game of footy and I can never shut up when watching the game😂. It will be very difficult though as most commentators are former players. However there are some commentators that are not ex players like Anthony Hudson, who is my favourite commentator. I plan to get a bachelor’s degree and commentate local footy to gain proper experience. Honestly I think I could do a better job than some of the boring commentators we have today as mentioned in the video because I am very enthusiastic.
Never give up on that dream man. Some of the best commentators are not former players. Bruce McAvaney, Anthony Hudson, Dwayne Russell (Ik he played a lot of SANFL and like 30 games for Geelong in the 60s but not a commentator bcos of being a former footballer), Matt Hill, Gerard Whateley, Jason Bennett. And even if u never become a professional or anything, do it for fun. I basically do that on my live streams. I call the games for fun and I get live feedback from people watching. Great way to learn and improve. But at the very worst I’m having fun and I’m entertaining people, best case I somehow become a pro one day (probably will never happen). Sorry for the long comment mate but the stuff the traditional ways to become a commentator. If you think u can do better then a lot of pro commentators then improve, learn, and start showing everyone what you’ve got.
That’s great man. I’ve been doing it for over year now. Little quick tip, when u do make a great call make sure to clip it and post it to gain traction. Idk if you have seen them but I have a bunch of YT shorts of me calling games if you want examples. They get views, engagement and those people become of viewers of your streams.
James Brayeshaw’s call of Buddy’s 1000th goal COMPLETELY ruined what was set to be a truly iconic moment. I remember being so hyped watching it, and then JB dropped the worst, most downbeat line I’ve ever heard from a commentator and I remember immediately thinking “gee that was it? That sucked”
You're probably right about the producer's or higher ups at Channel 7. JB and BT probably dont have a leash at triple M because their listeners can see the game, so they have to sell the game more so through their personalities?
Sell the game more? These fools (including Dr Dull Richo) make the game about themselves, the narcissists. Just call the play, you fools! Channel 7 need to listen to the fans. We all despise their commentary … 🤡😵💀
Great video! I think the issue with guys like BT and JB is that they are radio commentators by trade and it doesn’t translate onto TV. On Radio you have to describe more about what’s going on. TV you can see it. This is why you find BT bogged down in trivial stuff like how high a particular umpire bounces the ball or the nickname of a player.
Mate, Luke Hodge was driving me crazy when he was criticising nearly every thing that the umps were doing. Like he was the boss of the umpire. He was a great player, and a great all round sportsman. But his commentary is horrible.
Martin Tyler “Balotelli… Aguerrrrroooooooooo. I swear you’ll never see anything like it ever again. Watch it! Drink it in!” Those kind of commentary moments send shivers down the spine

Bring back Michael Christian. Dunno if this is a hot take but I always enjoyed his commentary back in the channel ten days.
“OHHH DON’T TELL ME”
he was amazing
I hate that there has to be a token woman on the commentary team, spouting boring mundane waffle , pretending to be some sort of expert.
I hate that any goose can post misogynist comments on TH-cam, pretending to be some sort of expert.
James Brayshaw telling us what a wonderful woman Dean Laidley is. That finished me.
JB, BT, Kelli, Russell are absolute trash. Matt Hill needs to be doing the prime time games, JB is a snore and always says the sh!ttest things like naming all the private schools. Howie is another joke get rid of him.
JB "loooong ball" "good looking ball"
Howie is fucking awesome wdym
Russell is a great caller
@@cyclonechaser0815 Howie is fking lame and thinks he is funny with his remarks.
@@water713 Russell’s lines are cringy, bloke thinks he is a wordsmith.
Gary Lyon and Luke Hodge on Fox is the worst
Didn't think Lyon was too bad, Hodge is fine as special comments but way to dry for a full time commentator and I think he knows that
I don't care if women are or aren't involved in AFL, but why do people say they "need to be involved in AFL" there's no reason they HAVE to be, they have AFLW. Just pick the best people.
💯👍
Channel 7 actually has a half decent commentator- just that he is doing the wrong job. Mark Soderstrom does boundary riding in Adelaide but he is actually a good commentator when calling games for local football.
Shiela's have no business commentating male sport. In UK we are sick of DEI hire women commentators in sport.
My favorite commentators of all time was Rex Hunt, hands down.
Bit before my time but respect
Interesting point you made about JB and BT when they commentate on radio versus TV. For me, Rex Hunt on the radio and his team had it nailed. And Bruce on the TV always had passion for the game he was commentating on. True professionals they were
Being a radio station on an FM band and the audience tending to be more in the 20s-40s demographic, JB and BT are able to be somewhat looser in their calls of games.
When they commentate on Ch7, they do have to be more reserved due to the broader audience groups - kids, teens, +50s.
I will proudly wear my helmet to the store. Tell me all the names of amazing women football commentators. I'll wait.
@@darrenoleary5952probably leaves you blinded to all the ridiculous calls he says against us

AFL is woke asf.
It’s getting boring and the commentators are truly woke
What makes you say that?
NRL is the wokiest. Far left politics ruining our footy codes.

All the media are woke AF😤 All the upper class is🙄
Using the word "woke" instantly loses every argument.
Rex Hunt, Dennis and Roberts will never be beat.
Wasn’t into Rex.
At this point I'd welcome back Robert Walls
Matt Hill is a breath of fresh air. He needs to be on in prime time.
Dennis Comitte , commentated like he invented the game
The voice of football hands down.
Brayshaw is passable but BT is and always has been bad commentator.
BT's makes me want to throw something at TV.
Kelly underwood is putrid.
Agreed. Dated monatone grating voices.
If I could pick a commentary team this would be it. Peter Landy, Lou Richards, Matt Hill, Matt Richardson and Jack Reiwolidt No chicks in men's calling, you have your own league now, move on over there.
Agree with woemyn just staying in their lane in AFLW, especially Laura Kane … 🤡
Lost interest in AFL when Robert Walls and that gay reporter turned the game into a safe space. Only got worse with Anthony Hudson and then female commentators
There's no competition - the channels have no incentive to improve their product as the AFL only care about the $$$. Channels are now calling games from studios in VIC when the game is in SA - cost cutting has gone to the extreme and the AFL do not care.
That’s actually a decent point I didn’t even think about. Great job mate and definitely a huge factor with the commentary standards dropping
Can we talk about how bad the umpiring has become? 🤮🤦♂️💩🤡But that’s whole other video..
Very well timed. I watch AFL MUTED. Bruce and Dennis please come back.
Richardson, BT and Brayshaw need to be moved on.
Adam Papalia is one of the best going round . His commentary on that Harley Reed goal against Melbourne was a classic.
That was Stephen Quartermain. He along with Tim Lane and Robert Walls were great and underrated tbh
That was Stephen Quartermain. He along with Tim Lane and Robert Walls were all great and underrated tbh
You should do a video focusing on the commentators Seven and Fox seem to always assign to the “off-Broadway” games (Jason Bennett, Matt Hill, Adam Papalia, Brenton Speed, maybe Alister Nicholson)
In addition to doing typical reviews of their commentary, you could ask why they always seem to get low-key or one-sided games in dud timeslots.
Hmm like the less talked about commentators. Could be a good idea, cheers mate
BTW Matt Hill has been a brilliant addition to Fox Footy this year
@@boundaryrider Agreed
@@boundaryriderMatt Hill needs to be doing the prime time games!
And John Casey in SA
Hi Boundary Rider thanks for the great video. First time viewer and it's great to have a platform about our great game and we can have a voice. Kelly Underwood I like her voice she just needs to know the players names I remember last year watching a Hawthorn game with a new player playing his first game and kept saying the wrong name how would his family and friends feel with his biggest moment in life. And I have a great idea how to bring back the State of Origin I think it's coming back into the spotlight again.
RIP Clinton Gybras.
Doesn't help that Fox often commentate from a studio, really think that is cheap from them and lowers to quality of the call
I put the TV on mute almost every game.
Mate if you think AFL commentary has gone downhill, try listening to the cricket. It’s 20x worse.
We’ve gone from getting iconic lines like “GOT HIM!” every wicket from legendary callers like Bill Lawry and Tony Greig, to simply “Edged…and taken” from deadshits like Howie and Isa Guha 😴😴😴
It’s made the game so much worse to watch. There’s no enthusiasm anymore, and like you said it’s just rock up, collect your pay check, and get out of there.
Anthony Hudson 😂😂 one of the greats 😂😂
Dudes got some iconic calls, Nick Davis and the miracle on grass
2:45 Ambient crowd noise. This is exactly what I want. Freedom from the over the top calls, freedom from the bias. Just crowd noise, where the microphones occasionally pick up the wonderfully colourful language of our country.
You missed Sandy Roberts. IMO, the Greatest AFL commentator of all time
He mentioned him.
I honestly think BT's call of Jamie Elliott's goal in Rd 23 2022 against Carlton was really good. He has the spark still, when he wants to.
Gerard's was the best call tho
@@joshuasadler9243Yes, "the librarian " - brilliant

Hot take, but I always thought Bruce McAveney was pretty crap - didn't know anything about the game, and didn't have many good one-liners.
Have had Ch 7 on mute for many years but usually try to avoid their games. Anthony Hudson is the best caller - I like Dwayne too.
If I’m watching pity I’ll sometimes put my favourite radio commentator on and mute the tv, Tim Lane was always a big favourite of mine for footy and cricket
It’s not all about calls and personality some people just simply don’t have the voice for commentary
“First blood [team name]” - Brayshaw
I have watched the TV muted, or just listened to the game on the radio for decades. The commentary on TV has sucked for years.
They are just either yell, or banter amongst themselves
Cometti and mcavaney were good because they called the play, their tone and volume rising with the excitement of the play, and cometti would say something clever in the subdued moment.
MCAVANEY , COMMETTI ! SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOOOOOD ! SPECIAL !
Kelli Underwood is hard done by I think - every commentator makes mistakes each week but they don't get pulled up on it.
Leo Barry, you star!
But Dennis was the best.
@@boundaryrider Thanks man that means a lot. Calling games on a live stream is really a lot of fun and I will definitely be doing that for practice. 👍
@@boundaryrider Will do. Thanks for the tip
They seemed bored half the time watching no excitement
You're probably right about the producer's or higher ups at Channel 7. JB and BT probably dont have a leash at triple M because their listeners can see the game, so they have to sell the game more so through their personalities?
Sell the game more? These fools (including Dr Dull Richo) make the game about themselves, the narcissists. Just call the play, you fools! Channel 7 need to listen to the fans. We all despise their commentary … 🤡😵💀
@@ma3stro681 when do they make the game about themselves? You are a fool.
They have to have a few women on their to tick the inclusivity boxes, regardless of how good they are at commentatiting.
Radio calls are 10x better than tv. I remeber in years gone by id watch the game on mute and have the radio going.
I think its better to mute the TV and listen to the radio.
Yeah I do. The 2016 Grand Final was great commentary, 2006, 2014, 2022.
