I hadn't thought the concept of catching the ball meaning different things at different places in the field was weird before, but it kind of is I guess. Although from what I've seen of American football they stop every few yards for something or other that I don't understand so maybe not so weird after all.

The quarterback then either hands the ball to the running back who runs forward or tries to make a pass to a wide receiver. When the receiver or running back is tackled either their knee, elbow, or ass has to touch the ground for the play to be “dead” (ie. official blows whistle and play stops.) the ball is then placed where the knee, elbow, or ass touched down. Your goal is to go 10 yards to gain a 1st down. You have 4 tries to do so which then reset each time you get a new one. You try to keep gaining 1st downs until you get the ball across the end zone line to score a touchdown. It can be very confusing if you don’t understand the rules but all in all it’s a pretty easy game to follow once you have it figured out

As someone who was an umpire in the past, I can tell you it only made me realise how bad the umpires actually are. It ruined watching footy for me, and the pre-holding the ball hover/walk just does my head in.. sure if it’s obvious you can do the walk, but the top level guys will do it on the most borderline calls and I’ll be the only guy at the stadium yelling at the umpire for 5 seconds until the rest of the crowd gets in on it

Fun fact: Australian Rules football was basically invented as a way to keep cricketers fit during winter. These days it is so full on in terms of physical fitness that even fit cricketers would struggle to get through a single match (and I say that a cricket fan... it's just funny that the recreational activity has become WAY harder than what they were keeping fit for).
The problem with any AFL game is that AFL isn't big enough of a sport around the world for big developers to make a game. Big Ant is a very small indy company who make a great effort, but footy has so many more elements to it than any other sport it would be so hard to make a game anywhere near the NBA, NHL or NFL games make

That was fun to watch. You might want to watch a game or two of Aussie rules before playing that game again. It's pretty unique, the players have assigned positions/roles, but they can basically go anywhere they want/need to. There is no offside rule. The holding the ball rule ( passing the ball when tackled) is very much what stopd this game from becoming rugby. Same with running with the ball, gotta bounce it from time to time or you are done holding the ball. Kicking for goal, it's something anyone can learn, but it is tricky. Kicking from those angles is tricky, but doable, though you'd be amazed how difficult it can be on game day (not so much at training). Finally, the thing stopping the players from kicking for goal further out is the distance. An Australian Rules Football ground is about 150~170m long at least. That semi circle thing near the goals is the 50m line. It's always fun to see people reacting to our game for the first time. Also, footy, in Australia we shorten longer words, and make short words longer. I'm Australian, and I can't really explain it.

I am all for supporting smaller devs, especially like those within Australia and I understand that they are a smaller indie studio looking to make back the money they put into development, but how can they justify a $80-100 price tag when Resident Evil 4 remake was $80 (70 on Amazon) at launch and Tears of the Kingdom which launches next week at $74? The pricing makes no sense business wise considering the amount of competition they have.
My feeling for it being that price is that AFL is a pretty big part of our culture, so here it kind of gets to claim triple A status automatically. We also already pay a lot for games so they'll charge just that bit extra if they think they'll get it, and since its charged by conversion rate it hits the next price tier for you guys too.

I'm both an avid fan of AFL and video games. AFL has got to be the most difficult sport to translate into a video game. Maybe with a competent and well financed developer it could be done.

Never expected to see a video like this today. A mark is when you catch a ball thats been kicked. You are then free to kick without interference. The reason there is no goalie is because the goals are absolutely massive. Kicking the ball is harder than it looks, especially when it is so far away. If you get tackled, you must kick or handball the ball, othwrwise it is handed over to the tackler. Further if an umpire believes you could not reasonably kick or handball, then it is a ball up
Best way to learn the rules is the old Barry Hall tv ads trying to get people in NSW excited for AFL because the Swans were having their best season in decades.
I don't think there could be a worse introduction to what is already a massive cluster fuck of a game. As much of a mess as it is, god damn I love it. If you want to see the best of this amazing sport I would recommend watching any of the streak of close games Collingwood had at the end of last season and has continued to some extent this season too.

simple explanation of the rules - if you mark the ball you get to take a free kick (or you can continue with the ball if you'd rather run it towards goal) - if you kick the ball between the middle posts you get 6 points (goal), if you hit the middle posts or kick between the outer posts you get 1 point (behind). if you hit the outer posts its out of bounds - if you hold the ball for too long without passing or bouncing you lose possession. if the ball rolls out of bounds it gets tossed up from the outer edge back into play, if you kick it out of play its a straight overturn of possession - fouls can result in overturning possession, giving distance advantage, and even an inside-50 (50 metre lines are marked at either end like in soccer with the goal boxes)

These days it is so full on in terms of physical fitness that even fit cricketers would struggle to get through a single match (and I say that a cricket fan... it's just funny that the recreational activity has become WAY harder than what they were keeping fit for).
The problem with any AFL game is that AFL isn't big enough of a sport around the world for big developers to make a game. Big Ant is a very small indy company who make a great effort, but footy has so many more elements to it than any other sport it would be so hard to make a game anywhere near the NBA, NHL or NFL games make

That was fun to watch. You might want to watch a game or two of Aussie rules before playing that game again. It's pretty unique, the players have assigned positions/roles, but they can basically go anywhere they want/need to. There is no offside rule. The holding the ball rule ( passing the ball when tackled) is very much what stopd this game from becoming rugby. Same with running with the ball, gotta bounce it from time to time or you are done holding the ball.
Kicking for goal, it's something anyone can learn, but it is tricky. Kicking from those angles is tricky, but doable, though you'd be amazed how difficult it can be on game day (not so much at training).
Finally, the thing stopping the players from kicking for goal further out is the distance. An Australian Rules Football ground is about 150~170m long at least. That semi circle thing near the goals is the 50m line.
It's always fun to see people reacting to our game for the first time. Also, footy, in Australia we shorten longer words, and make short words longer. I'm Australian, and I can't really explain it.

My feeling for it being that price is that AFL is a pretty big part of our culture, so here it kind of gets to claim triple A status automatically. We also already pay a lot for games so they'll charge just that bit extra if they think they'll get it, and since its charged by conversion rate it hits the next price tier for you guys too.
AFL is massive in Australia so they can charge those prices and people will buy it.

I'm both an avid fan of AFL and video games. AFL has got to be the most difficult sport to translate into a video game. Maybe with a competent and well financed developer it could be done.

A mark is when you catch a ball thats been kicked. You are then free to kick without interference.
The reason there is no goalie is because the goals are absolutely massive.
Kicking the ball is harder than it looks, especially when it is so far away.
If you get tackled, you must kick or handball the ball, othwrwise it is handed over to the tackler. Further if an umpire believes you could not reasonably kick or handball, then it is a ball up
You have to bounce the ball every 8 steps. It's such an arbitrary rule and Charlie's disbelief took me out

I don't think there could be a worse introduction to what is already a massive cluster fuck of a game. As much of a mess as it is, god damn I love it.
If you want to see the best of this amazing sport I would recommend watching any of the streak of close games Collingwood had at the end of last season and has continued to some extent this season too.

Watching an American play this game makes me live laugh and love
simple explanation of the rules
- if you mark the ball you get to take a free kick (or you can continue with the ball if you'd rather run it towards goal)
- if you kick the ball between the middle posts you get 6 points (goal), if you hit the middle posts or kick between the outer posts you get 1 point (behind). if you hit the outer posts its out of bounds
- if you hold the ball for too long without passing or bouncing you lose possession. if the ball rolls out of bounds it gets tossed up from the outer edge back into play, if you kick it out of play its a straight overturn of possession
- fouls can result in overturning possession, giving distance advantage, and even an inside-50 (50 metre lines are marked at either end like in soccer with the goal boxes)
