    I have a pine tree just off my patio in which I see faces in the bark. I often draw these faces. I call them my Tree Family. I love what you did here, Prof. Lieu. ❤--- KateColors

    So inspiring! I love the brush and expressive brushstrokes of the gnarly tree. I am currently working with oil pastel and enjoyed seeing it in mixed media. The watercolor does fill in the tooth of the paper if you want a shortcut while working primarily with oil pastel. Thank you!

    Your painting is stunning! What a fantastic tree. Loved the contrasts.in watercolours. I am dabbling with traditional oil pastels and with water soluble crayons (Caran d'Ache Neocolor 2) and find them fascinating. But...never thought of combining them with watercolour. I need to look into that soon!

    What a champion is that tree. I'm sure it was quite the oddity when alive and now in death, leaves gone, colour blanched it gives this gorgeous sculptural form. You'd love the trees in the Tassie highlands. Everything here grows in about 50 cm of soil (if they're lucky) so pretty much all our trees are twisted and cranky. It's a relatively recent discovery that trees are altruistic. Turns out in lean years larger trees will forego water and nourishment to allow more vulnerable trees in the vicinity to survive. They do this regardless of the species of the other trees, thereby maintaining biodiversity. They communicate via the mycelial networks underground.
    I love watching you dry brush with the sumi brush. I can't wait for someone to make a vegan sumi brush so I can try them.

    • @artprof
      @artprof  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've heard about this! And when an older tree dies, I heard it will send out its nutrients and immunity memory to the younger, more vulnerable trees. Great examples of community living! -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist

    I really loved watching your use of the sump brush, the textural effects you achieved with it. I wondered what oil pastels you used, they looked square? I also wondered if you knew there were water soluble oil pastels out there too. I have not tried them yet. Your end result was so pleasing and full of energy. I learned a lot from the way you worked too. Thanks for another great video.

    Love the finished product Clara! What kind of fixative would you use for a piece like this? Thank you

    • @artprof
      @artprof  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I generally don't add fixative to oil pastel drawings, I know it's a pain as oil pastel drawings can be scratched and get damaged. Really the only absolute archival way to protect an oil pastel (and soft pastel) drawing is to put it under glass which is not practical given how expensive it is. So for an oil pastel drawing, I'll put a sheet of tracing paper over it so it stays protected. -Prof Lieu

    Currently, these two (along with gouache) are my go to mediums for quick sketches at end of a long day of work... great to see your demonstration of how well they can work together! I have a question about the paper - Is it watercolour paper (cold pressed) or mixed media paper? or something else?

    The painting turned out nice. I am newish to painting, making art, and am thinking about how to combine water color and oil, on canvas. I need to figure out a composition so I can put watercolor ground on the canvas, then paint with the oils, or and maybe acrylic. Or put watercolor first then acrylic ground for the place I want oil, acrylic.
