I just bought oil pastels and followed along with your tutorial. All your tips about blending and using contrasting colors were just enough to help make my first pair a success! Can’t wait to keep going with this medium!
This was awesome and your tips were great! You sold me on mixed media! I’ll stop being such an oil pastel purist and stop fighting to get skinny tree branches in the distance with a thick oil pastel. I loved the hints about throwing in opposite shades to make a color richer, too. It really does work.
Yes! As always, you pack your tutorials with advice about composition, media color/theory & the best way to save money while still getting the desired results. ( Your "frugal crafter" title still holds, LOL!!)
I have seen Marla Baggetta and Alain Picard carve out trees with “sky holes” in soft pastels, I believe that you can do the same thing with oil pastels! So those twiggy details are not an impossible feature with these mediums!
I like the term "visually stimulating." One day I'll be able to paint loose and impressionistic but today I'm still a bit too tight. That's okay though, it's part of my artistic journey.
It's hard for me to be loose too but I needed to try to break away from the crazy detailed things I've painted in the past. This one took me 2 days and I'm reasonably happy with it. Good Luck on your journey.

This was so informative - I had to pause several times to take notes of things you said about using Oil Pastels, coloured pencils, etc. Thank you so much. The lemons are so beautiful....I loved this.
I've tried oil pastels many times and could never get it to work for me. I even have some Senelier's thinking a better pastel would be the trick. Not sure why I never thought that a mixed media approach might be the way to go. Thanks for the great ideas. Great painting.

That being said I love love love the colors I have in the PR set and was thrilled to get them at an absolute steal when I bought them. I cannot for the life of me get them to blend with my fingers though, lol maybe I’ll try her glove tip as it’s totally possible it is a texture issue, I don’t even touch soft pastels or chalk for that very reason lol.
First time pastel user. I'm checking out different tutorials. Ur tip about using colored pencils is 🔥. I've been getting frustrated with my projects when I can't keep/get sharper lines. I had almost succumbed to believing I was only going to do impressionist art with the pastels. 😆 Thanks!

@@thefrugalcrafter it’s like a smooth card stock. But definitely useful for playing and blending - I did end up buying some pastel paper to use with them! But it was still a great deal and I can use the paper for stamping if nothing else!
I like to spray a layer of gesso onto my paper. It makes blending a lot easier. I got my hand on Ghiant transparent gesso in a spray can, so I can preserve the color of the paper. The spray can in the absence of an air gun helps me to quickly apply an even coat without the need for sanding. Using fewer layers helps to preserve the structure of the paper, adding more grip but the oil and wax on the surface instead of seeping into the paper, thereby forming a stronger bond. With the wax and oils staying on the surface it lowers the resistance hence the pigments glide on the surface much easier. At least that's my theory. 😀

I keep my oil pastels painting covered with a sheet of wax paper in a drawer, if I am not hanging it up on a wall. This stops the smudging and keeps the painting in good shape.
Haha, here is one of those artists that still want genuine alizarin crimson. - I use a substitute for anything that is intended for direct display, but as for anything else, I will stick with this color because I simply love it. Your lemons turned out great! And yes- oil pastels are totally the best for mixed media, and color pencils are the perfect addition. And I was wondering, do you think that the Paul rubens oil pastels are better than the Mungyo soft oil pastels? Or are they basically the same in quality? I have never tried the Paul Rubens ones, but I do have the Mungyo ones, and I was just wondering if it would make sense for me to also buy a Paul Rubens set. Just by looking at them they always appear very similar to me, but then again I have only seen them in videos.
They are very similar. Maybe try the Paul rubens pastel set tho as those color probably won't be duplicated in your mungyo and they just came back in stock!
Thanks Lindsay. Beautiful painting. Absolutely glowing! I'm in a rush, everything I touch turns to crap going on 2 weeks. Very discouraging. I look at my supplies and think why? Why do I even bother? What the frig happened? 😖😭 I have been taking care of a covid family member. Maybe I'm just to stressed out. Expletive deleted.👍💜🗯
Im so sorry. Sounds like stress. And if you are stressed art helps but if you rush it makes more stress. Maybe try something you can start and stop easily. Do you knit?

I keep my oil pastels painting covered with a sheet of wax paper in a drawer, if I am not hanging it up on a wall. This stops the smudging and keeps the painting in good shape.
Excellent explanations 😊Lovely
Thank you! 😃
Amazing! Loved it.
@@thefrugalcrafter Nope. No knitting or crocheting. Nerve damage from neck injury and ulnar nerve damage and surgery. Repetitive fine work with fingers just makes my hands cramp because of it. My creative MOJO is at an all time low. And my execution sucks at the moment. I feel sorry for my paint and paper. Ugh.
Very pretty. Do oil pastels stay as vibrant on a black paper? Thanks for all you do.
They should if you use light and opaque colors
@@thefrugalcrafter Thank you.
LOVE THIS!! ❤
I love lemons as a subject! And oil pastels! Tho I don’t think you ever posted a review of the Paul Reubens pastels, or did I miss it? At any rate, loved this , Lindsey, would love for you to do pastels, soft, oil, or pencil, a little more frequently - maybe you could justify more Senneliers, lol!😂
I did tutorials I guess. I might not have reviewed it because I am not an oil pastel expert.
Absolutely lovely, nicely done~ 🙂
This is making me want to try oil pastels. Problem is, what I really want is THIS painting. XD I'm surprised at how well I do at painting when I follow a tutorial (my copy of your echinacea flower in front of a fence is like my prize work, LOL), but you're SO GOOD at all the little fiddly details, whereas I think about them and just wilt. 😂
Anyway, enough about me! This is a really bright, refreshing painting! Thank you for sharing it with us! ❤️
Okay, so question (hopefully you'll see this!): Do you think it's possible to do this drawing using the crayola set of 28?
I imagine so. You will need to use the white quite a bit but I don't see why not.
@@thefrugalcrafter I guess I just didn't know whether they'd have all the colors you used (well, close enough to count, at least). But I might just give this a try after all! I've got plenty of watercolor paper lying around, so why not! I can hang it in my kitchen later. 🤣
