Andrew Raftery (b. 1962 Goldsboro, NC) is an artist whose work explores both observational and autobiographic narratives of contemporary American life.
His artistic practice rests upon a deep expertise and appreciation for the antique medium of engraving, and his precise and labor-intensive works demonstrate the enduring relevance-and efficiency-of this medium’s application on contemporary subjects to disseminate images that are universally accessible.
Raftery pools his expansive knowledge and care into his works to create intimate and inventive portraits of his 21st century life using techniques that date back to the 15th century, thus paying homage to the vast history of printmaking in an updated, modern setting.
His practice is simultaneously heavily research-based as a scholar and collector, as well as both personal and objective: his work constitutes a constant practice of self-reflection within his contemporary society.

Thank you for sharing this, it is so inspiring, per usual.❤
@@noodlecatcountry I'm so glad!! -Prof Lieu
Using ghost prints instead of graphite for a watercolor base drawing is so smart! The whole process is fascinating.
That would never ever have crossed my mind as an option, it's brilliant! -Prof Lieu
just spotted Andrew’s reflection in one of the paintings at the end - he put himself in the painting! i found Waldo! 😊
Hahaha yes he does that often, I love how he sneaks that in. -Prof Lieu
More of this style of video please - maybe a new series that could be absorbed into Clara’s travel videos?! Great interview, video quality and editing in the story-telling to showcase this incredibly skilled artist and teacher. Thank you
I soooooooo wish I could produce more of these, the issue is that they are extremely time consuming to produce and unfortunately don't generate revenue for us, so it's hard for me to justify spending so much time on something when our budget is so tight. If you make a clone machine, lmk. 😂 -Prof Lieu
What a superb insight into Andrew Rafferty's process. I was astounded that the line drawing is completed as a photo lithograph. It is no wonder that the final works are so meticulously executed, and yet, despite the detail, they maintain a deep humanity and evidence of the artist's hand. This work is everything that photorealism is not.
I loved that I could share with all of you his work, he is truly one of a kind. -Prof Lieu
The best interview you've ever done! I was mesmerized.
One of my fav videos we have ever made, I hope I can do more! I need to find a big pile of cash in the UT desert... -Prof Lieu
I love that he has a whole pallet just for greens and that he gets a little playful adding those homeowners, the humor. And the wall paper stories that he really gets into. Bravo Prof. Lieu for bringing this level of information to us!
One of my fav videos we have ever done, so happy to share this with all of you! -Prof Lieu
Watercolorist here, I absolutely see tracing as educational.
I really never thought about it that way until he explained it, and it makes so much sense! -Prof Lieu
I trace my own sketches and transfer them on thick watercolor paper
How delightful! I love Andrew's art, and also his calm, soft spoken demeanor, and gentle humor. Thank you for doing this interview 😄
hahaha he and I have the exact sense of humor: dry with a lot of eye rolling😂-Prof Lieu
I love hard pencils too!! Its so nice to find an artist who likes hard lead because all the drawing and watercolor books I read say "don't go harder than 4B" and I do try but i just don't like drawing as much with soft leads
That's what I was saying, I'm glad I'm not alone!
Yes! I use a 4h to sketch out my watercolor studies. So light and it is much easier to make disappear when actually painting.
I never liked H pencils, but now I'm thinking I should try it! -Prof Lieu
I have never seen handpainted wallpapers before. Absolutely amazing! Also I can't imagine how absurdly wealthy you would have had to be to be able to decorate your home with it.
I am also just stunned by the patience Andrew has for his process of translating these luscious rooms into watercolor. I feel like being around him is probably really good for one's blood pressure. 😅
hahaha that's one of the reasons he's so wonderful (among many) -Prof Lieu
just amazing!!!! LOVED sstumbling into this watercolor world! thank you for this window! the pencil drawings also knocked my socks off! in gratitude for ART for Ze HEARTS! What a way to SEE the details of the world! beautiful- Calypso story never knew! Love it more!
The Calypso story made me laugh so much😂-Prof Lieu
Andrew Raftery is truly amazing!
He has inspired me for so many years, and more to come! -Prof Lieu
Omg I too miss the 9H and I'm right there with Andrew and the 4H pencil! I found it interesting when he mentions how he chose his supplies to draw in the museum to be non-threatening to reassure the guards. That would never have crossed my mind but yeah guess that makes sense . Great video well worth the wait!
He is so considerate of everyone! -Prof Lieu
Wow! Amazing work and wonderful interview.
I didn't have to do much, he is so lovely to talk to! -Prof Lieu
Quite astonishing, and so, so beautiful. What an extraordinary man, what an outstanding artist. Thank you for sharing this.
Wow i have so much admiration for Andrew's intense preparation process! Such an insightful video on so many levels
He has continued to inspire me throughout the decades, I'm so pleased I can share his work with all of you! -Prof Lieu
“Non threatening t square,” is a phrase I didn’t know I needed. Wow. My mind is legitimately blown!! For real. The absurd detail, tons of layers, pen work, and then he still maintained the white of the paper!
He is sooo polite😂! -Prof Lieu
I loved this. Joy, passion, humor, and of course the meticulous research and technique. The best of reasons to create art. Thank you.
The depth of all the various facets of his work continues to astound me. -Prof Lieu
I feel like I just went to n a fun art class field trip! Loved it!!
Awesome!!! I'm so glad you are enjoying this type of content!! -Prof Lieu
I just love this video!! It's a MUST SEE! The wallpapers that he so perfectly captures remind me of the openning credits of the White Lotus series. They all have the mythology behind them.
Wow. Thanks for bringing this artist to my attention. What an interesting person, and the skill and patience needed for this work is incredible. I love the people he put in the hallway, what a great detail and sense of humor. Just wow. Peter O'Toole would have been the perfect actor to play him in a movie.
Glad you enjoyed it! He is one of a kind for sure :) - Mia, Art Prof Staff
You were correct. This is an amazing video about an exceptional artist. Enjoyed seeing his perspective.
He's incredible!! -Prof Lieu
Where am I? This is so beyond art history and humanities. I wake ⏰️ up regularly to your new art fantastamagorical epiphanies. Panoramic horizons, indeed visions, for the 🎨 artist, the child, the creative, the didactic, and autodidactic to open the drapes to unexpected, unexplored manifestations, inspiring venues and avenues for sensitive eyes.
Such a beautiful man with a beautiful soul ..art does truly show the soul
I knew his fantastic engraving work. There is a crazy, timeless, obsessional but genius quality to him & his work (all sustained minute detailed work is craziness to me, can't help it😉).
Also, the infinite delicacy of the work brings a tranquil emotion that is...hard to find (in contemporary life & art).
He is truly one of a kind!! I think of him as a contemporary Durer. -Prof Lieu
@@artprof That is spot on!
This is breathtaking, i really hope to see more of his process in the future.
I loved this. His work is incredible.
This was such a wonderful video. Thank you for doing this. I wish I had such an amazing, giving professor AND your re-connection or longstanding friendship makes me feel all fuzzy and warm. As an engineer, and now novice printmaker, I can so relate to his use of drafting tools (I carry my stash everywhere 🤣). I’m stunned that he only uses ONE paintbrush!! What was it? A number 4 …? Much gratitude!!!❤
I know I couldn't believe it's just 1 brush! I'll ask, other people asked many questions about his supplies. -Prof Lieu
Really, really loved this video. I was just blown away by the painstaking detail in his paintings. His process is fascinating - the lithographs themselves are beautiful works of art. Kudos for your production - the calm, quiet presentation is just perfect for Andrew's personality and methods. TH-cam's push for short, fast and furious wouldn't work very well in this case.
He constantly amazes me with everything, and I have known him for nearly 30 years! I'm so glad you liked the editing, I felt that to really absorb his thoughts this video needed a totally different pace. -Prof Lieu
I cannot believe the amount of detail in the painting! How?? In watercolour, no less. fantastic work
Truly astonishing!! -Prof Lieu
Thanks so much for this wonderful interview and look at Raftery's amazing watercolors! His work is new to me, and I want to explore it more.
I listed in the video description lots of links to his other work, especially check out his exhibition catalog where you can read in greater depth, in his voice, about the work. -Prof Lieu
Lol Andrew is so concerned about having non threatening items! It cracks me up…
He is so polite, empathic, and kind! I'm so grateful to know him. -Prof Lieu
What a wonderful man and what an amazing place. Love how peaceful and calming this video is!
Yes, you'll notice that the editing and pacing of this video is very different. (slow 😂) I did that on purpose because it felt like the best fit for his process and artworks. -Prof Lieu
What an educated magic. What a sense of being. What a beauty. And as a cherry on top this kind of anti-egotistic, objective, well, formal (like theoretical)) sense of humour - two persons at the background in July 😊 Thank you so much 🙏🏼 #artProf U R the best.
This is so kind! Thank you a million times over for your lovely words and generous contribution. We appreciate you :) - Mia, Art Prof Staff
😊🙏
This artist has the most meticulous practice I've ever seen! Astoundingly beautiful work!
Fantastic! Thank you so much for your time and effort in making this and bringing it to us
I shot this in 2022, but I think it was well worth the wait! -Prof Lieu
I'm glad I'm not alone in thinking greens are the toughest to get right with watercolors.
I never really thought about it until I heard him talk about it! -Prof Lieu
Jesus! What skill!
This whole man's vibe... i love it
same - can’t get enough of him! So inspiring
The amount of detail is insanely magical - I love the old wallpaper scenes. I really enjoyed the extra additions for example the people, Andrew’s image in a cabinet reflection and that beautiful dog 🐕 BEAutiful work. Thanks for showing
Awesome, thank you!! He is one of my fav people in the entire universe😀 -Prof Lieu
I want to know how on earth he does not get hard edges and cauliflowering all over, with that amount of layering and detail. Absolutely fantastic. And what paper he is using? Looks like Hot Pressed?
People have a lot of questions for him, so I'm going to call him and get answers soon! -Prof Lieu
I was listening to the podcast and have seen the shorts. This is the first time I watched the video. I love watercolors and definitely am implementing some of tgese techniques. I also love the format this is so beautiful! Thank you for making this.
We're so happy you enjoy the podcast as well! Thanks for tuning in :) - Mia, Art Prof Staff
Incredible. I feel I would do terrible in his class with my lack of precision
While his own work is very detailed, that is definitely not the type of teacher he is! I found him to be extremely supportive of the direction that you wanted to take your work in. -Prof Lieu
Great video!! Can you share the name of the graphite sharpener Andrew uses. I love how he uses the powder to make his own transfer paper. Also, I've never seen that kind of graphite pencil before. It's almost like a cigarette holder for a pencil. What brand of pencil is that? I'd also love to llearn more about his drawing transfer process: making the lithograph and printing it to the watercolor paper.
People have a lot of questions for him, so I'm going to call him and get answers soon! -Prof Lieu
@@artprof I think I found what he uses. I went out on Amazon and got the technical pencil, leads, erasers (love how you can cut them up and make them smaller). I also got that cool lead pointer too.
Did he mention what kind of paper he uses?
People have a lot of questions for him, so I'm going to call him and get answers soon! -Prof Lieu
What is the museum, he is talking about, that he painting the chair from?
I’m pretty sure it’s the RISD museum? Can’t remember if he mentioned it in the video somewhere.-Prof Lieu
@@artprof ok thank you
4H as soft!!?? wow! this is incredible!
I hate any pencil harder than a 2B😆-Prof Lieu
Wow, what amazing work.
I loved this video so much, feeling like you're maybe spoiling us a bit with this! So much insight into the process at every single stage. I loved hearing about the thought process, story, practice and study, selection of materials and even specifically why each of the paints earned a place on the pallet. The video itself is also super well done and polished.
I couldn't help but laugh at 4h being a really soft graphite and all the steps taken to comfort the museum guards haha
He is hands down one of the most polite, considerate people I know! -Prof Lieu
Excellent video. Fascinating.
