I love that he has a whole pallet just for greens and that he gets a little playful adding those homeowners, the humor. And the wall paper stories that he really gets into. Bravo Prof. Lieu for bringing this level of information to us!
Omg I too miss the 9H and I'm right there with Andrew and the 4H pencil! I found it interesting when he mentions how he chose his supplies to draw in the museum to be non-threatening to reassure the guards. That would never have crossed my mind but yeah guess that makes sense . Great video well worth the wait!
What a superb insight into Andrew Rafferty's process. I was astounded that the line drawing is completed as a photo lithograph. It is no wonder that the final works are so meticulously executed, and yet, despite the detail, they maintain a deep humanity and evidence of the artist's hand. This work is everything that photorealism is not.
More of this style of video please - maybe a new series that could be absorbed into Clara’s travel videos?! Great interview, video quality and editing in the story-telling to showcase this incredibly skilled artist and teacher. Thank you
I soooooooo wish I could produce more of these, the issue is that they are extremely time consuming to produce and unfortunately don't generate revenue for us, so it's hard for me to justify spending so much time on something when our budget is so tight. If you make a clone machine, lmk. 😂 -Prof Lieu
I just love this video!! It's a MUST SEE! The wallpapers that he so perfectly captures remind me of the openning credits of the White Lotus series. They all have the mythology behind them.
I have never seen handpainted wallpapers before. Absolutely amazing! Also I can't imagine how absurdly wealthy you would have had to be to be able to decorate your home with it. I am also just stunned by the patience Andrew has for his process of translating these luscious rooms into watercolor. I feel like being around him is probably really good for one's blood pressure. 😅
What an educated magic. What a sense of being. What a beauty. And as a cherry on top this kind of anti-egotistic, objective, well, formal (like theoretical)) sense of humour - two persons at the background in July 😊 Thank you so much 🙏🏼 #artProf U R the best.
“Non threatening t square,” is a phrase I didn’t know I needed. Wow. My mind is legitimately blown!! For real. The absurd detail, tons of layers, pen work, and then he still maintained the white of the paper!
The amount of detail is insanely magical - I love the old wallpaper scenes. I really enjoyed the extra additions for example the people, Andrew’s image in a cabinet reflection and that beautiful dog 🐕 BEAutiful work. Thanks for showing
Where am I? This is so beyond art history and humanities. I wake ⏰️ up regularly to your new art fantastamagorical epiphanies. Panoramic horizons, indeed visions, for the 🎨 artist, the child, the creative, the didactic, and autodidactic to open the drapes to unexpected, unexplored manifestations, inspiring venues and avenues for sensitive eyes.
just amazing!!!! LOVED sstumbling into this watercolor world! thank you for this window! the pencil drawings also knocked my socks off! in gratitude for ART for Ze HEARTS! What a way to SEE the details of the world! beautiful- Calypso story never knew! Love it more!
Wow. Thanks for bringing this artist to my attention. What an interesting person, and the skill and patience needed for this work is incredible. I love the people he put in the hallway, what a great detail and sense of humor. Just wow. Peter O'Toole would have been the perfect actor to play him in a movie.
Really, really loved this video. I was just blown away by the painstaking detail in his paintings. His process is fascinating - the lithographs themselves are beautiful works of art. Kudos for your production - the calm, quiet presentation is just perfect for Andrew's personality and methods. TH-cam's push for short, fast and furious wouldn't work very well in this case.
He constantly amazes me with everything, and I have known him for nearly 30 years! I'm so glad you liked the editing, I felt that to really absorb his thoughts this video needed a totally different pace. -Prof Lieu
Yes, you'll notice that the editing and pacing of this video is very different. (slow 😂) I did that on purpose because it felt like the best fit for his process and artworks. -Prof Lieu
I listed in the video description lots of links to his other work, especially check out his exhibition catalog where you can read in greater depth, in his voice, about the work. -Prof Lieu
I knew his fantastic engraving work. There is a crazy, timeless, obsessional but genius quality to him & his work (all sustained minute detailed work is craziness to me, can't help it😉). Also, the infinite delicacy of the work brings a tranquil emotion that is...hard to find (in contemporary life & art).
This was such a wonderful video. Thank you for doing this. I wish I had such an amazing, giving professor AND your re-connection or longstanding friendship makes me feel all fuzzy and warm. As an engineer, and now novice printmaker, I can so relate to his use of drafting tools (I carry my stash everywhere 🤣). I’m stunned that he only uses ONE paintbrush!! What was it? A number 4 …? Much gratitude!!!❤
I was listening to the podcast and have seen the shorts. This is the first time I watched the video. I love watercolors and definitely am implementing some of tgese techniques. I also love the format this is so beautiful! Thank you for making this.
I'm in my mid-40s and trying to learn how to paint -- so these videos and your IG are so helpful. Also alleviates the loneliness of such a solitary type of practice.
I love hard pencils too!! Its so nice to find an artist who likes hard lead because all the drawing and watercolor books I read say "don't go harder than 4B" and I do try but i just don't like drawing as much with soft leads
I want to know how on earth he does not get hard edges and cauliflowering all over, with that amount of layering and detail. Absolutely fantastic. And what paper he is using? Looks like Hot Pressed?
Great video!! Can you share the name of the graphite sharpener Andrew uses. I love how he uses the powder to make his own transfer paper. Also, I've never seen that kind of graphite pencil before. It's almost like a cigarette holder for a pencil. What brand of pencil is that? I'd also love to llearn more about his drawing transfer process: making the lithograph and printing it to the watercolor paper.
@@artprof I think I found what he uses. I went out on Amazon and got the technical pencil, leads, erasers (love how you can cut them up and make them smaller). I also got that cool lead pointer too.
While his own work is very detailed, that is definitely not the type of teacher he is! I found him to be extremely supportive of the direction that you wanted to take your work in. -Prof Lieu

One of my fav videos we have ever done, so happy to share this with all of you! -Prof Lieu
Using ghost prints instead of graphite for a watercolor base drawing is so smart! The whole process is fascinating.
That would never ever have crossed my mind as an option, it's brilliant! -Prof Lieu
How delightful! I love Andrew's art, and also his calm, soft spoken demeanor, and gentle humor. Thank you for doing this interview 😄
hahaha he and I have the exact sense of humor: dry with a lot of eye rolling😂-Prof Lieu
The best interview you've ever done! I was mesmerized.
One of my fav videos we have ever made, I hope I can do more! I need to find a big pile of cash in the UT desert... -Prof Lieu

Yes! I use a 4h to sketch out my watercolor studies. So light and it is much easier to make disappear when actually painting.
