- In this video you can enjoy the cab ride - train driver's view on famous and unique Wuppertal Suspension Railway (Schwebebahn) between the final stations of Oberbarmen BF station, Vohwinkel station and back in 4K/60 frames per second.
This journey leads us along the unique German Wuppertal Suspension Railway (Wuppertaler Schwebebahn). The line was originally called Eugen Langen Monorail Overhead Conveyor System, named for its inventor, Eugen Langen. It is the oldest electric elevated railway with hanging cars in the world and is a unique system in Germany. Construction of this suspension railway began in 1898 and the line was ceremoniously opened in 1901, with Emperor Wilhelm II taking a test ride with wife Auguste Viktoria.
The Schwebebahn runs along a route of 13.3 kilometres (8.3 mi), at a height of about 12 metres (39 ft) above the river Wupper between Oberbarmen and Sonnborner Straße (10 kilometres or 6.2 miles) and about 8 metres (26 ft) above the valley road between Sonnborner Straße and Vohwinkel (3.3 kilometres or 2.1 miles). Only four of the 20 stops run above solid ground. The entire trip takes about 30 minutes. More than 80,000 people use the suspension monorail on a daily basis.
In 2015 the first of 31 new vehicles Generation 15 or GTW 15 trains were introduced. Through the use of three-phase asynchronous motors, this is the first time that the possibility of energy recovery during braking has been exploited. The operating voltage has been increased from 600 to 750 volts. In terms of safety, an entirely new train safety system ETCS has been installed.
Wuppertal Schwebebahn has a sister suspension railway relationships with Shonan Monorail since 2018. Shonan Monorail is a suspension railway located in Kanagawa, Japan and connects the cities between Kamakura and Fujisawa.

I work in public transportation in the USA and it makes me so jealous to see how advanced and well planned out European transportation is. We are decades, if not a century behind in the US. It’s pathetic how much the auto industry has monopolized transportation here.
@TheN747 I do not know the USA railways. If I am right there are more fright trains than passenger lines. Is that right?
@@RailRelaxation Absolutely. You can easily draw the Amtrak network on a single sheet of paper, looks like the bus net of a small town. Except the bus would run every hour rather than 3 times a week. Local passenger trains in the US are a bit like subways in Europe: Only the absolutely biggest cities have them.
@Quasihamster I am dreaming about going to the USA and film some lines there too. Can you send me an email (you can find the address under about tab) where we can exchange some ideas? Thank you.
And this suspension tram is 122 years old.
@@rogeriomonteiro760 Yes it is. Check out the video from 1902. It's been colorzied and looks surreal. Almost hard to believe that horsedrawn carriages were part of everyday life for people back then. To see it just search: [60 fps] The Flying Train, Germany, 1902
fantastic. In 2019 when I was visiting Germany I took a day trip out to Wuppertal from Dusseldorf specifically to ride this train from end to end! ✌️😄
Very cool! I found it amazing to ride on it. Just an amazing engineering.
That sounds like something I'd love to do with my family, how long is the ride one way? 30mins?
@@Jokero_YT yes, it is around 30 min.
@@Jokero_YT yes.
"Aus Sicht des Lokführers"... die Windgeräusche vermitteln mir, dass der arme Lokführer vorn an der Schwebebahn klebt :D Tolle Fahrt, wirklich einzigartig!
Absolutely unique ride, especially from this perspective. Total pleasure to watch, very relaxing.
@ThomasHalways Glad to hear that!
Man I wish I could visit Wuppertal someday and go on a ride on the suspended railway. Incredibly beautiful. Much love and respect from Bulgaria
@antikoerper256 Maybe one day! I hope that you will get to see it in person.
Familiar scenery for me. I live in Düsseldorf and I took the Schwebebahn many times by now. It's the main attraction when you're in Wuppertal and a unique experience.
Fun fact: Düsseldorf itself has a suspension railway at the airport. As well as Dortmund at it's university. You could say that the Rhine-Ruhr area is the main region for suspension railways :)
@pppphillip Interesting fact. I did not know about that other suspension railways. Thank you.
Sehr gut gemacht. Ansonsten blieb Tuffi unverletzt.
@wuppertaler2944 Very nice story, I read about Tuffi on the internet. I wish you a nice afternoon.
There’s a memorial to Tuffi, who sadly passed away in 2013.😮😢
Wow! I love the use of space without infringing/impacting the environment. Brilluant! ❤
@katthompson3852 Yes, it is a brilliant idea.
I mean I don't wish to sound overly negative, since it's a cool and useful method, but I do think it still negatively impacts the aspect of the river and the look of the city.
By far one of the best cab ride videos I have seen. The scenery is beautiful! Unfortunately this is the only way I will ever get to travel the world. Please cotiue to post these!
@kevincurry1561 I am glad that you are joining me on this railway journeys around the world. I will continue to fill and to share them with you. I wish you nice evening.
Excellent! I can't thank you enough for bringing this viewing pleasure!!
@skbachoti you are welcome. I am very happy to hear that. I enjoyed the ride very much. Something really different.
123 Years old and it looks as though it could have been built in the 60's or 70's! Fabulous engineering!
So true!
German public transport is one of the best in the world. Bravo. And thanks for the awesome video!
@DmytroBaldr82 You are welcome. And thanks for your comment.
As someone who literally grew up riding the Seattle monorail, I would love to ride this suspended train.
@TheUluxian I hope that you will get to ride it in person.

Thanks for posting that beautiful video.
I know the Schwebebahn very well.
I was born in Solingen.
@TheUluxian
I visited Seattle - one of my favourite cities - two times years ago and I rode the monorail.
And yes, I didn't have a lot of rain in this rainy city. 😀
And I was so happy to see Mount Rainier. It was an amazing view while visiting Space Needle and making a harbour--tour by ship.
Greetings from Germany to Seattle.
What a novel experience - beautiful! Thanks for all your great rides. The photography is astounding. This made my day.👍👍👍
I am so glad to hear that. Have a nice afternoon.
What a wonderful way to get around, thank you for posting, I had no idea this even existed. 🙂
@Alan316100 Glad you enjoyed it and glad that you discovered a new thing 🙂
- A very interesting ride on an elevated or suspension railway line that is unique in the world and was a technical masterpiece at the time of construction.
It was a very interesting ride on that masterpiece. I can not even imagine how they built this amazing construction back then.
It must be so cool to do this every day . Thank you for sharing part of your life with us
@user-wx9tn5gh4o You are welcome.
The case of how public transport organically blended into the landscape without disturbing anything. Like it as always.👍
Yes, true. I love the idea. And the fact that it was build more than a 100 years ago is just incredible. Great solution for the busy city centers.
That's a wild ride hanging down from the track over the water! That was cool!
@williamsouthworth5275 It was a really interesting ride.
I Loooovee this. The View from this Suspension Rail is stunning
@guru00704 It really is.
Thank you for this incredible video. I have seen hundreds and hundreds of train videos during my workouts and this is probably my favorite. Fascinating ride up the river and thru town. The picture is clean and clear. Thanks again, I had no idea this line existed.

I known this particular rail, but its the first time that I see it in a video. Beautiful
@cordialifetecchie I am glad that I could bring this line closer to you. It really is beautiful.
Thank you so much for this video, it's amazing
@Aces77777 You are welcome. I am glad you liked it.
I was born and grew up in Wuppertal, but haven't lived there for a long time.
There's a small mistake at 8:50, because it says Loher Brücke.
Many people don't realise that the Bayer company was founded in Wuppertal.
At 25:00, I think it should be called soccer, football would be something else.
Thanks for the journey 👍
@lehmanns_chris You are welcome. Thank you for your comment.
It is football - you hit a ball with your foot. 😂
In Europe soccer is football

Herzlichen Dank.

8‘54‘‘ It‘s not Locher Brücke it‘s Loher Brücke (it‘s correct at 53‘40‘‘)
But to be honest: I watched so many drives with the Schwebebahn and this is one of the best. Filmed in wide angle with descriptions of what to see right and left. THX for having me on the trip 🚟👍

Tolles Video!! Danke!
@Musikfan2910 I am lad that you liked it.
I first saw this in a book in the early 50’s with the Wuppertal trams running underneath. When I finally got to ride it in the 1990’s it was one big tick on my bucket list. Since then I have ridden on it many times. There is a cracking brauhause at the eastern end! There is a short line in Dresden but it is in the form of a funicular. Great video, but pity that you didn’t get a ride round the loop at the ends.
@screwdriver5181 Thank you for your comment. Yes, that would be very nice.
Thank you for this very nice video taken on a sunny day and showing the excellent integration of the Schwebebahn with the landscape. It blends in the city and what could have been a hugly meccano disappears nicely and it provides a convenient and airborne mean of transportation. J'adore. I worked on public transportation engineering worldwide (Los Angeles, Beijing, Nanjing, Teipeh Toronto, Napes, Eurostar) so I like nice public transport. Greetings from Paris
@johnjeanb Thank you very much for your comment. I am glad that you liked the video, the line is amazing. I Agree, the integration of the suspension monorail with the landscape is amazing and not talk about the engineering works on the structure...
Hi, I took the entire ride. Never seen such a Schwebebahn before. Somehow weird to take a trip along a river without floating on the water. Nice views and, due to the season, pretty good visibility as well. Great, relaxing idea, thanks! Greetings from Finland!
@spurgendahl Thank you very much for your comment. I am glad you liked it, it is really very unique ride.
@frankhinzmann4901 Very interesting. I have not seen that historic Kaiserwagen. It must be interesting to see it.

Amazing railway, must be a lot of custom parts and maintenance requirements, so good to see it still in operation regardless!
@Peter-MH Indeed!
I well recall in 1950 on a train from the Hook of Holland to Iserlohn whilst In thee British Army when I saw this overhead gantry suspended train over a river in Wuppertal which did surprise me being unlike anything I have ever seen before. But if my memory serves me right the train was colour red and more futuristic than current being torpedo shape.
@Peter-lm3ic They changed all the trains for the newer models, before they were more colourful.
This is on my list of things to film too :) Nice.
@lorirocks777 It is a very interesting line, you should.😊
Very good Safety Record 😁⏺️😊👍

@@RailRelaxation I do not have doubts . I'm going to look at it tonight before the f1 race
The Shonan Monorail in Ofuna, Japan has been twinned with the Wuppertal Schwebebahn since 2018. 😊
Sehr interessant! Vielen Dank!
@AndreasMeyer1970 You are welcome.
Ich fahre damit immer zur Arbeit :). Sehr praktisch.
@1981sebi It looks very good, no traffic jams...
The Wupper seems to offer significant head. If someone were to put a weir upstream and run the water into a long penstock, they could harvest a bit of power from it.
Wow! Bellissimo!👍👍👍
@lucia9084 Realmente.
The system is almost unique because it essentially followed the course of the Wupper River through town.
@Sacto1654 Yes, it is amazing. If you think that it is more thank a hundred years and still looks futuristic.
Einfach super!
@volkergerke6127 danke.
Nice View 😄😌
@RichardNickels-ot6iq Thanks for visiting.
VG
@josefh. Thank you. There is a Shonan Monorail in Japan, a sister suspension railway, that was built not so long ago.
Sehr schön.

Are they using ERTMS for signalling or just the signs as block markers for some other cab-based system (the blue sign with the yellow arrow)
It uses ETCS Level 2 signalling (no lights, all radio controlled) but it is (again) a unique solution as it usea TETRA for radio communications and not GSM-R.
