@montgomeryscott1656 Thank you for your support. It is a real masterpiece, this railway line. And it is very different to see it during the night. I wish you a nice Saturday.
I so want to ride this one of these days. I'm from Seattle, and have ridden our Monorail thousands of times. Be so interesting to ride one with the track ABOVE the train..
Having the tracks above the train was a design-feature. Originally they wanted to build a normal elevated line, similar to the ones in Chicago. The problem is that there are lots of narrow curves, so the trains would have had to slow down constantly. Using only a single rail above the train avoids that problem. The trains tilt to the side (like a bicycle), so they can navigate curves at high speeds without derailing. The big drawback of that system is that you can't easily build switches or intersections. Wuppertal only really needs the one existing east-west line, but they tried to sell this to other cities, which politely declined due to that reason. The older (1970s) trains were rather lightweight and rocked like a boat, even in stations, and had big warning signs for non-locals to "watch your step!". Technically, it works like a subway, running on 700V DC via third rail (or rather second rail...). On transportation maps, it's usually depicted as a "subway", while by law it's classified as "streetcar of non-standard construction and/or operational practices"...
Even though I live in Germany, I've never visited this great suspension railway in Wuppertal - I've clearly missed something! Great pictures during the night journey, these lighting atmospheres at the entrances to stops, an often glittering reflection on the surface of the Wupper River - a night journey through an illuminated city naturally offers much more variety than a night journey on a railway train that is only illuminated every now and then Places and train stations touched... It was worth installing the Go Pro on the outside: the image quality is simply fantastic without any annoying or dirty driver's cab windows 👍 🤔🤔 I'm not sure, but before the return journey from the depot in Oberbarmen to Vohwinkel, a nice gentleman stood at the end of the platform and waved friendly at the camera... Since no one had to be behind the camera because it was filming from outside, this nice scene could have shown us the filmmaker himself... 😉😄 But it's all pure speculation 🙄 Many greetings 🖖
Lovely ride over the dark river at night. Thanks for including the reversing moves, too! I think the red dot and distance tracker got a bit confused at times, though.
@rbrwr I am glad that you enjoyed it. Yes, the data shown are GPS based and sometimes get a bit confused. But still I think it is good to have that data displayed.
this must be by far the most save way of transport on earth. eight accidents in 122 years. 82000 travlers daily, 5 dead and around 100 injured. i know roads who have this number in one year... :(
I should have taken the opportunity to ride in this Wuppertal Schwebebahn when I visited Germany several times. But now I am too old and do not have the opportunity anymore.. I have been to Germany, Switzerland , Austria,, France, Italy, Netherland, UK and Finland. I missed all these places.
I wouldn’t have guessed a night video of this ride would be so great. If I ever travel to Europe I’m going to try to make sure Wuppertal is on the itinerary. Could be done as a day trip from Amsterdam I think? It’s a long way from California though.
@jamesrea329 it is a long way from California, yes. But it is so unique, that it is worth a trip...you can get from Amsterdam to Wuppertal in a bit more than 3 hrs by train.
I could easily fall asleep to that noise. Used to love my free train trave on BR as a kid and teen would've loved riding this too, maybe one day I can get back to my German roots
This is SO COOL! The ride must be fantastic! However, I have one question: the trains seem to be very close to windows and they circulate at night. Is there a lot of noise / vibrations?
Amazing! Great video quality! How did you manage to mount the camera outside? Did you cooperate with the tram company and got a special permit? Greetings from Koblenz, Germany 🇩🇪

better than cars but if there were only trains like this that would be a problem I think, like people in Japan don't even have a free space to move on the trains
I never tire of Schwebebahn cab ride videos. Night time is another level, though. Thanks!

The night ride was truly enchanting. Your videos typically don't showcase this perspective, making the night ride all the more captivating and unique.
@RunVirtual5 It is quite different, I agree. I think that it is so different from the ride during the day.
