My family's been in the area more than a century. You've been lucky in the last 20 years. When my mom was a small girl, in the 1930's, just east of Redondo there was a huge earthquake from the major fault that runs from Long Beach north to Marina Del Rey. It destroyed their house and they lived in their car for months. Every time we had an earthquake at night she woke up screaming. We had severe quakes in the 1970's, 1980's and 1990's but not since, though we have regular tremblers where houses shake. You have to take this into account. You've also been very lucky in the last 20 years with storms. Not that many years ago Redondo Pier was mostly destroyed in a massive storm. Huge waves drove boulders well inland from the coast. They had to build emergency sand berms to prevent houses along the beach from being destroyed by the waves and many, if not most, were flooded. These storms can also be accompanied by severe wind events. Water spouts can also be driven onshore and become tornados. On several occasions entire blocks have been damaged or destroyed. We have nice weather here, except when it isn't nice. Then it can be awesome. A year's worth of rain can fall in one or two days. It's critical to have a sound roofing system or you risk major damage. If you move into a lowland area, a hollow, an old watercourse or an area where adequate sewage drainage wasn't built by get rich quick real estate developers, all of which exist in the South Bay, you can be flooded out just as if you lived next to the Mississippi. A lot of this was natural marshland bordering the Pacific coast when my parents were young, not that many years ago. Don't trust the real estate people. They are usually ignorant of the area, don't tell you of risks or minimize them, and are charming liars. Do your research. Be skeptical. Thanks to our local governments there is also an infestation of coyotes in the area who attack household pets and eat them. They've also attacked humans. The environmental lobby has prevented their eradication and meadures to prevent them from spreading. North Redondo Beach also has a gang problem, resulting from being heavily overbuilt by greedy real estate people. She also didn't mention the outrageous taxes state, county, city and local. We live in a One Party Left Wing State with a suitably tyrannical government. Our public schools are deteriorating, there are bands of vagrants everywhere, even in Redondo, and crime is steadily increasing. The state just legalized child molestation (I'm not kidding or exaggerating - look it up). The Venice end of the Strand is now a very dangerous Skid Row encampment. We have to expect this to gradually spread south to our area since the government is encouraging it. To get anywhere in California it's necessary to drive, especially in the LA region. The government charges huge gas taxes, making gasoline here some of the most expensive in the country, despite the fact that we still sit on huge reservoirs of oil and should be exporting it. The declared intention of the government is to prevent ordinary people from having cars in 14 years, though I'm sure our leadership class will have all the transportation they want. In the last election cycle people protesting our Democrat status quo were shot at, physically attacked, had their property damaged and were assaulted by police units who protected left wing violent rioters. This all hapoened in the,South Bay area. The political situation here will probably only get worse, and possibly much more violent. Take anything from our local real estate people with a big grain of salt. They don't have the greatest of reputations among locals. While she's lived here for about 20 years, and that makes her a long term resident among real estate people, she's still a newcomer to the area. We're plagued by people who come in to make a killing, get their money, and then abandon the messes they've created. There's no real good reason why the average price of a home here should be $1,000,000. People overpay, then overbuild to compensate, and destroy their reasons for moving here. If you want to live here long term with your family and be buried here, fine. Otherwise, please leave.
I hear you. My family moved to RB in 1966. I'm a grad of RUHS. The house/property I had to sell in 2019 due to L.A. County tax reassessment (Prop 13 - my aunt didn't put her father, my grandfather, name on the property deed). Miss the location but not the mass of humanity that moved into the area that changed it. BTW: my home was just above PCH, 5 minute walking distance from Rivera Village (TJ'S, the banks, etc.) & front view of the Pacific, PV, Malibu on a clear day. Live in Las Vegas now where I could afford to buy - very low prop taxes. So, yeah, this senior So Cal native misses her home, the weather, the views, the magnificent wildlife but not the mass of humanity.
I lived in Redondo in the 90's.... we had that huge 1994 earthquake. Rent was cheap, gas was cheap, lots of houses for rent....I rented a 2 bedrooms apto on Carnegie lane for $ 525 a month...now that same apto is around $ 3 k ....20, 30 years ago Redondo was the best place to live, now you can live there if your bank account is fat.

No cons except its a 15 min drive to the closest freeway entrance if you are in S Redondo. But we have cleaner air because we are so far away!

Live 5 blocks away from J.K. Rowling's cafe in Edinburgh for 3 yrs. Cali is too far away and Real Estate is expensive. Sorry.
Nice! Those books rocked!
And don't forget to tell them to wear their masks LoL
That was a requirement I believe.
