My main tip is ask to talk to other disabled students or what the feedback is from other students. My disability office was amazing when I first applied, but as soon as I got in and we started to discuss things they previously said were possible and they did all the time suddenly weren't possible anymore. I had to fight for every little thing because of my disability and they belittled me with almost every accommodation (not fellow students. They were great, but the staff was horrible!). At one point, because I live in the city were my college was, they forced one of my parents to be within 10 minutes of campus when I was in class at all times. Just because they didn't want to have any responsibility if I fainted or so (which is normal for me and I recover rather quickly and if not I went home). In the end they kicked me and a bunch of other disabled students out just because they didn't want to do any accommodations anymore. Most of us got kicked out only a few months before graduation! It was and is horrible! And the worst part for me is that this college constantly advertises how great they are with disabilities and how inclusive they are, yet behind the scenes they are horrible. And if any of the students who were kicked out or anyone who knows one of the disabled students speaks up, they get silenced and the college has all newspapers in the area wrapped around their finger, so we have no way to fight back. (sorry, seems to have turned into a rant, but I hope it can help someone)

I'm so sorry this happened to you! Thanks for sharing your story. I agree that it would be a very good idea to talk to other disabled students at a school before committing to go there.

@@fromkaytozee8132 Thanks. I'm still not fully over it, but I'm getting there. It just hurts when after 4 years of hard work you get kicked out and there is no way of finishing it somewhere else. But their ableistic views won't stop me from finding something else I love as well.

@@liesvandenplas8066 I have a similar story at the graduate level. The further along in the program I got, the more fishy ablest their accessibility, policies, and actions seemed to me. They eventually forced me out citing the ethics code claiming that my disability made me unfit for practice in my chosen field, and I'm not the only one!

@@catloverKD I'm sorry you had to go through that too! It's such a horrible thing colleges and uni's do yet no one bats an eye in this ableist society. With me in the year it happened, 8 of us got kicked out. All disabled or chronically ill students and all for the same reason; being disabled. We tried fighting it, but we don't have enough written proof as our college knew it's illegal and thus refused us all written communication (aka proof of their illegal practices). I hope you can find something else you love too!

Hi! Thank you so much for this video! I’m a visually impaired student in high school and I’m going to be a junior in the fall. I’m starting to think about college and what’s important to me so this was really helpful. I would be really interested to hear about your college application process and how your disability affected that. I’m wondering how to incorporate the fact that I’m visually impaired into my application even though I know that I want to mention it in an essay since it’s such a big part of my life. Also, hearing about your high school experience would be really cool as well. Thank you so much!

Great video as always Kay. You do a great job of highlighting the different things to keep in mind it related to Disability in the college search. As a fellow visually impaired college student I’m really impressed that you thought about all these things as a freshman. I only looked at to schools since I knew I wanted to stay local and make them an easy short drive from my house but I wouldn’t of thought to do all the things you mentioned like keep a list of how each school made you feel
