I saw him play at Paisley Park. I wasn't a huge fan when I walked in. I walked out knowing I will never see another human being that talented at anything.
I didn't "get" Prince until I sat down and watched Purple Rain. It just dawned on me. Then I started watching his performances. Daaaaaaaaaaaaang. Yea, that man was a legend
He was in the company of the likes of Beethoven, Mozart, Bach---virtuoso, genius, ahead of his time---you're sooooo right: we won't ever see another as talented.
A 9? Out of what? 9? The way he plays through the key changes his note selection (which is all improve) his awareness of where they are in the song and the fact that he didn’t even rehearse with these guys. You can’t even grade that shit. It’s one of the purest most sincere performances anyone will ever witness.
Dude doesn't even know what tom petty looks like so his opinion doesn't really mean anything. And he also compared the zone Prince was in to a zone that he's been in. So I wouldn't worry about any type of rating this dude gives on anything. Now I can't be upset about a 9 out of 10. Prince has plenty of solos on this level and higher on his own live shows and songs.

Prince was such an amazing performer that i always felt it made him probably the best underated musician EVER. Prince could come out on stage with legends at a Hall of Fame concert.. Play 1 song, not sing 1 lyric, not perform 1 dance, play his lead over everyone then throw his fuckin guitar in the crowd and just leave them bum hall of famers standing holding there guitars in AWE. All them others were Rock n roll Hall of Famers Prince was a GOD of Rock n Roll!
As a guitarist for the last 40 years, this is my favourite guitarsolo of all times!! About the vanishing guitar, legends has it that the gods reclaimed it after that solo because it's too dangerous to be played ever again.....
Many, many times Prince threw his guitar into the crowd when he played at the end of his concerts. If you watch his concert videos, you see he does it over and over. At this performance his guitar tech (and himself a legend) Takumi Suetsugu caught the guitar off-camera. Suetsugu apparently never dropped one of Prince's guitars. He caught them all.
@JoanRuth Why is it a big deal that Dhani liked it? He's not a musican. Just plays a few chords on acoustic like half the world. And his father didn't even play this solo with the Beatles. I guess I'm in the minority. I don't think this was the stupendous guitar solo that so many do. Or that Prince was as great a guitar player as his fan boys and girls feel. Guys not nearly as famous like Rick Derringer are light years beyond Prince as a guitarist. His own drummer and girl friend Sheila E was the best musican in his group including him. She like her dad is a fantastic percussionist. I do think he invented his own personal style of music I call minimalistic funk. And he did have the look at me star power confedence. He sure was a unique and intersting person that passed way too soon. I think thats his real legacy.
I posted this to my FB and said just watch Dhani. Lol he is amazed. Rightfully so. But then I watched an interview and Dhani said that he and the others were thinking Why is he making this about him and showing off like that and that his dad wouldn't have liked it. So who knows.

Yes he stayed out of the public eye. When I was a kid I always thought prince was like Michael Jackson (very talented man also not to take away from him) but prince was everything the entire package. I’ve learned that now

Exactly how I describe a good player and a musical talent. Thee music or instrument itself become an extension of the body. It’s as instinctual and known to you like it’s a part of your self, you need not think of how to play, you play without needing to be completely somewhere else mentally. It’s the prediction of every single note prior to not ever once knowing what is to come next as you freestyle the next part, it has been shown in brain imaging scans there is a huge amount of brain differences shown in a player just playing a known or reading the music and playing music perfectly, and that of someone who plays then slips into that zone of total free styling, brain areas light up in imagery, vision and fantasy, whilst the frontal lobe controlling your ability to actively choose or make a decision as well as you can shuts off. Your ability to choose to play by sheer active conscious playing turns off, leaving you without a real awareness of a conscious decision to make the music of such amazing freestyle like this, and let’s the brain literally transcend into a different place. If you can play any music like this, you may know this place or zone, even if you just love a song and are singing badly but you are lost in it, that zone has you connected to music in ways that are not just consciously doing a thing and hearing a note and motor skill direction. But the place for people like this is simply, musical genius. prodigy of his craft. Rare such a person can be found even amongst the top tier level players who have just grinded their way to where their ability peaks but these people have a natural ability to just be above that without any more trying, it’s an instinct you have or have not got, and wow did Prince have it in abundance.
Purple rain came out while I was in high school - he was peerless. I've watched this particular solo many times, blew legends off the stage. We miss you Prince.

That song is about getting so much melodic emotion out of your guitar it sounds like it's weeping. All I gotta say is Prince's guitar is weeping so hard, it's ugly crying, it's nose is running, and tears are flowing freely into the tub of Häagen-Dazs it's bingin on.
Guitar thrown to bodyguard (the guy he leaned back into). Interesting fact about Prince's performance. Nobody on that stage knew how or what Prince was going to for his solo except Prince. The first time they saw him do his solo was during that performance.
I believe I also heard that after throwing the guitar he literally just casually walked off the stage, walked straight out the door, jumped in his car and left.
@@motif45505 Sort of-Prince walked back stage and talked with a ZZ Top member before leaving. This is on the RARHOF DVD disc set (not aired). He then jumped into his car and did a concert (that he was late to).
I also heard when they told him what song they were doing, he said he hadn’t heard it before but he’d listen to it before he had to play on it. Lolol. And then he didn’t do the rehearsal. Just to make them trip. Man, I love Prince.

I don’t care who you are, that is pure genius from every perspective. The improv, the performance, the stage presence every fkin aspect of Prince’s solo kicks all of the jams. The fact that he didn’t even turn up for the practice session is just… you prick, but also you god.
According to the article about the behind the scenes to this all-star performance, Prince did show up to rehearse with the Traveling Willburys for this tribute; however, due to a misunderstanding or lack of communication with Marc Mann, the other soloist, Prince did not get a chance to rehearse his epic solo with the group. They literally did not know what he was going to do until they went live the night of the performance. Just incredible musicianship from everyone on that stage in pulling that all together and Tom Petty did a stellar job as band leader.
To keep things firmly in perspective...... When he passed, this guitar god was in the middle of a tour that included NOTHING and NOBODY but him, a piano, and a microphone. That amount of talent and swag is insane and borderline unnatural.

I hate to be "that guy" but I am about to...9?! How is this not a 10?! This is a flawless performance by Prince. As stated in the vid there is so much going on with this solo. This is a ten...I'm going to say it again...this is a 10. Btw great vid, cool to see someone appreciate amazing music and talent so much.

His playing was quite exceptional for any Pop music genre, but if you give him a 10 for this performance than you would need to change your "scale of awesome" to include an 11 or 12 , because there have been an extreme number of exhibitions showing "more awesome" guitar playing even for Rock music. What the much larger majority of the world recognizes to be a "Master Guitarist" (10 skill level) ist a very short list of about 100 people in every music genre, especially the many different Classical Guitar Compositions produced from so many of the currently existing 195 countries. Prince Rogers Nelson ist not on that list. :-) Giving him a 9 score for this performance und guitar playing ist a "fair" assessment. Honestly, I would have given him an 8.75 score simply because his performance was not quite awesome as the many others that exist who should get a 9 score, und only a few of the current Pop music guitarists exhibit the musical skill to be recognized as Master Guitarists (10s). He had an aide that took care of his guitars and he always catches the guitar when Prince throws it away. The guitar was then given to Oprah Winfrey. This solo was his last with this guitar.
Very, very underrated Prince was! You know I hate saying one guy is better then the other, but Prince bounced up 10 notches to my top 5 rock guitarists ever! 🙌🏼

@@jeremyandrestevenson2313 You can find replicas (made in China) for a few hundred dollars. They are unbranded. They look amazing but are of generally poor quality. The old original ones though I have seen on sale for like 15K. So, short answer, it all depends what you are looking for.
The guitar is labeled as a Honner, but as noted, they make harmonicas, not guitars. Honner did what many companies do, they approached a guitar company to make a version of a guitar with their name on it to sell. They went to HS Anderson who already made the "Mad Cat" - that is one tell as to where the guitar was made. From what I read, there were only 2 companies HS Anderson labeled guitars for, Honner and Harley Benton. So, a Honner labeled Mad Cat in the '70s, made it to a pawn shop and legend has it that Prince picked it up for $30. HS Anderson still makes a small run of these guitars (apparently less than 10) every once in a while not each year. I believe the company has changed hands since the '70s, but they are still being made on the same production floor as Prince's original guitar. Another tell on a lot of knock off guitars you find is that they have a different color "leopard print" pick guard. The cellulose HS Anderson uses looks black and brown like Prince's, not the black and yellow you see on knock offs, because they have the original source at their disposal. On a down note, the HS Anderson headstock had to change (they added a small cut in) after Fender sued them - and other other companies, for duplicating Teles and Strats. That to me is minor considering they use all the other specs of the original. In 2021 I picked up mine for a little less than $1,200 + shipping. I saw it come up on Reverb, bit the bullet and bought it as soon as I saw it after having searched for one over the decades. I effing love the guitar! ❤
I don't think people understand how talented most famous musicians are. They sing, dance, act, and play several instruments and play them well. Prince is definitely one of those people.
Fun fact: Prince didn't know the song when he agreed to play in the tribute, and rehearsed it only once with the others. And that rehearsal was a failure. Prince was supposed to do both solo's with the other guitar player, but both times during the rehearsal, he backed away to the background and let the other do the solo. At the end he suggested that he would do the second solo and the other the first. When Tom asked him to join the next rehearsal, Prince said Don't worry, but didn't show up at the following rehearsals. So the band was worried about how his performance would turn out. And Prince delivered beyond everyone's expectations.
I didn't research this one, but in my 35 years of playing music professionally I can't remember an instant where anyone was worried over or felt the need to rehearse a solo over an a-minor vamp. Just saying.
Should call it fun fiction. Seems to be a trend the last decade (at least since I've noticed) how people get sold with the "wasn't even trying" bullshit. I recall a magazine article talking about Kings of Leon saying they before they cut their first record they had only played their instruments for a few months... It's all bullshit. You can tell here that Prince knew every note of the original lead and hit those notes when and how he wanted to. This was well practiced. One has no need to rehearse with a band if you know the band is going to be playing the same progression for a certain amount of time. All he needed to know was the scale, the original lead, and how much time to fill.

This guitar solo made a lot of old time rock and rollers sit up and take notice. I know because I'm one of them and I been telling them for years about Prince guitar prowess. But all they saw was the flashiness and a pop star. I've saw him 3 times in concert and knew what he was capable of doing musically. Now they know.

Prince did that as an FU to Rolling Stone Magazine & some of the artists that he performed with on that stage for trying to snub him. You can't snub that level of raw talent.

Prince is one of those musicians that doesn't just play instruments. Take guitar for instance... He molds that thing into something else, then makes it blast energy and emotion. That solo is insane
The only person in my head who was as multi talented musically as prince was Zappa. They didn't make remotely the same kind of music but they were both multi (and I mean over 20) instrumentalists who were also amazing composers. Prince obviously had a better voice but they both have massive vaults of unreleased work, and were true workaholics.
While My Guitar Gently Weeps was always a beautiful song. But until Prince played it, I never heard a guitar actually weeping to the song. The words were always poetic & vivid in description but when Prince played it on a guitar (which can't utter a single word) it sang the words & meaning of the song better than anyone who's ever sang it before. And had Prince sang it, he would've rewritten history & we'd think it was his song; like how he sung Bob Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower " better than Bob ever sung it, ever. He did rehearse, but didn't rehearse with the group. So they had no idea what he was gonna do and are hearing it for the first time like everybody else. I think the important thing is that George Harrison's son was very happy with it.
Prince was a stickler for rehearsing. He would rehearse 10 hours a day with his band when they were preparing to tour. The band would go home and he wouldn't stop playing, writing and recording or putting on a show.
I remember watching that show, it was so amazing to see in real time because at first you see Tom Petty nod at him to play more and then a few bars later Petty seems to nod at everyone else and they all take a couple of steps back and let Prince really go at it. It never gets old.
A rumor floated around for a while after this performance that Tom didn't like the show boating but I find that to be BS. They couldn't keep from grinning ear to ear. And Tom's no joke of a musician by any means. Talent recognizes talent.

I loved the look on Bodhi Harrison's face watching Prince do this to his Dad's song. The kid was in absolute heaven. The only reason I can think of that this wasn't a 10 was it was too short.
Perhaps someone mentioned this already, but I’ve heard that Prince never rehearsed any of his solo for this performance beforehand. They asked him if he’d like to play, he showed up on stage and proceeded to melt faces.
Prince was so underrated at guitar I can’t understand it. He was up there with all the legends. I barely listen to him but he destroyed. More talent in his pinky nail than most, also being fun to watch like Dimebag was.
I will answer your question with the following comparative analogy: 1) GM Chevy Corvette has always been their high performance flagship model- hands down. 2) In 2003, Cadillac division launched a new high performance 2 seater known as the XLR. Featured with a supercharged Platinum XLR-V engine. 3) they did a test drive out in Warren Mi that same year at GM Proving Ground test track, head to head race between a Vette and that XLR. 4) The XLR completely dusted the Vette. Would GM advertise this when they marketed the XLR? No. Why? Because their commitment to the Corvette as their top high performance Chevy model was to remain unchallenged in the eyes of the consumer. For that is how they marketed it. Get where I am going with this? Prince was just this little black kid from some unheard of place in Mid America. It was more than a tall order for Jimmy Hendrix to reach the level of respectibility amongst his white peers in the forum of "guitar gods". And where did he first get his achieved recognition? It wasn't in the US, it was in Europe. A place notoriously more embracing of artists of different races and cultures in their respective art forms. Here in the US it took longer for them to warm up to Jimmy. But when they finally did, they put this black dude in the same mantle place as the rest of the "flagship" R&R "gods". Same with Prince. And I laughed when they reacted to his performance of the John Lennon's classic, when so many had a meltdown OH MY GOD WHERE DID THIS COME FROM??? Its been there in Prince's fingertips all along. He didnt rehearse for it. He didn't need too. Go back and listen to his catalog. It's been there all along. Most of us weren't paying attention.

@rexrocker1268 Thanks Rex. Many refer to Prince as a prodigy. He once referred to himself as "sort of crazy". Susan Rogers, his studio engineer from 1983 - 1986, and also a professor at Berkeley, has the most fascinating take on what made Prince so incredibly prolific at his craft. You will find her explanation on Sunset Sound Studios youtube channel. Look it up I promise you, you'll enjoy it.
Many of Prince's guitars were custom made for him at 2/3 normal size so he didn't look as small. The man was meticulous in every single detail of his life. My artistic muse 4ever!! Give it a 10 man!
Very dynamic, loved it when he works his way up the neck with open string hammer-on's, the way he comes sliding down the neck, mixing it up with chords, the phrasing and the multitude of other things that I can't even name, amazing! That was one of his greatest solo's.

@@lovenspired 3 minutes. He does them again later as well, but once you know what to look for you will recognize it. A hammer on is when you tap a string with your finger hard enough to sound a note and then release it.

I always liked how respectful he was in this performance. Given his God-like genius, he never forgot that this was a ‘supergroup’ and a tribute to another performer. It’s like you can actually hear that in this solo.... or maybe I’m just getting too emotional 😂

Most people never master 1 instrument as well as Prince did guitar. To be able to play multiple instruments, command a stage, write songs, the way he did. Just imagine if he had focused all that extra effort into just his guitar. He was every bit of the word GIFTED. R.I.P.
When he first came out, it was mentioned how in-the-pocket he was on guitar and bass. People were shocked that it was just one guy because he sounded like he had only played each instrument. The Time's first album is just him (credited as Jamie Star) and Morris. Morris, a bad a** drummer - as well as former drummer for Grand Central Station, Prince's band before he went solo. They tore it up. You can hear Prince's vocals on many of the Time's tracks, including the voice of the Maitre d' on the interlude, Chili Sauce. 🤭
To this day there isn't a single recording artist that I've seen more times in concert. 9 times I've witnessed this genius at his craft. I feel extremely fortunate that I was able to do so. I will say my favorites were always his after show mini concerts. Often times he was just a piano player or guitarist and let the band show off their talents.
One of my greatest regrets is not seeing Prince in concert the last time he was in Australia. It was a small venue in Sydney. It would have been great. Unfortunately, I found out about it way too late to get tickets.
I've never read the interview, but supposedly, and I'm paraphrasing here, Clapton was asked by an interviewer "What does it feel like being the greatest guitarist in the world?" Clapton's reply was (supposedly) "I don't know...Ask Prince." Again, I don't know how true that is...I've never read the interview/transcript myself. I just know what I've read in comments sections on the innerwebs.
I think Eric would be fine with this... to be fair, if you follow the original story of the Beatles WMGGW recording, Eric's part was un-planned and un-rehearsed. It wasn't even his guitar. George Harrison picked him up in his car and asked him to come to the studio with him for support and when they got there George gave him his Les Paul and dropped the bomb... please do the solo. It was partly a two fingers to Paul and George Martin (producer) who had hand-cuffed George into doing backing guitar on the new album (he was the fekking Beatles lead guitarist and a song writer in his own right!). So Eric pulled out a solo on a new Beatles song, with a borrowed guitar, in one take... that has been held up to the spotlight for 50 years. That's the legendary 'Beatles' who Eric looked up to - no pressure then. Eric remains GOD. But Prince might well have been Jesus Christ. .

A friend of mine knows the drummer here...Steve Ferrone and told me Steve said that Prince never showed up for the rehearsal and that he showed up while they were already on stage and played that solo then he threw his guitar up in the air and walked out. Wrong! Lynne, Petty and the others are/were - above all - top notch songwriters, composers and arrangers. They are all "very good" musicians, too, but Prince on that stage was the only real intrumental virtuoso. Full stop.

Their virtues are/were much more concentrated in the field of songwriting, composing and arranging whereas Prince was a genius in both writing AND playing. (Mind you: I was a huge ELO fan in the 70s and 80s, always loved Petty and never really warmed to most of Prince's music - but that's just due to personal taste. Rather objectively, Prince - as a complete artist package - was a league (or two) above anyone sharing the stage with him here.
I have asked myself the same question for years: where the eff did his guitar go? I think it went back to heaven who loaned it out to him. Prince was a magical being. I like to think Prince was on loan from the spirit world and we were lucky enough to experience something of it on earth.
Pete Townsend once said that he smashed his guitar because it was unable to convey the music inside of him, as if it was somehow the shortcoming of the guitar. Nothing against Townshend, but Prince shows right here that the guitar is quite capable of conveying the music inside of the right player. "It's the wand that chooses the wizard, Harry." Pete doesn't smash his guitars anymore, by the way. 😉

I'm a HUGE fan of his and been following him since "before soda pop had fizz" and now that he can no longer control what drops on TH-cam there are seriously dozens and dozens of him doing this and a tad more. I saw him play at Paisley Park. I wasn't a huge fan when I walked in. I walked out knowing I will never see another human being that talented at anything.

I didn't "get" Prince until I sat down and watched Purple Rain.
It just dawned on me.
Then I started watching his performances.

The way he plays through the key changes his note selection (which is all improve) his awareness of where they are in the song and the fact that he didn’t even rehearse with these guys. You can’t even grade that shit. It’s one of the purest most sincere performances anyone will ever witness.

So I wouldn't worry about any type of rating this dude gives on anything. Now I can't be upset about a 9 out of 10. Prince has plenty of solos on this level and higher on his own live shows and songs.

Many, many times Prince threw his guitar into the crowd when he played at the end of his concerts. If you watch his concert videos, you see he does it over and over. At this performance his guitar tech (and himself a legend) Takumi Suetsugu caught the guitar off-camera. Suetsugu apparently never dropped one of Prince's guitars. He caught them all.

@JoanRuth Why is it a big deal that Dhani liked it? He's not a musican. Just plays a few chords on acoustic like half the world. And his father didn't even play this solo with the Beatles. I guess I'm in the minority. I don't think this was the stupendous guitar solo that so many do. Or that Prince was as great a guitar player as his fan boys and girls feel. Guys not nearly as famous like Rick Derringer are light years beyond Prince as a guitarist. His own drummer and girl friend Sheila E was the best musican in his group including him. She like her dad is a fantastic percussionist. I do think he invented his own personal style of music I call minimalistic funk. And he did have the look at me star power confedence. He sure was a unique and intersting person that passed way too soon. I think thats his real legacy.

This is how an instrument should be played. It is an extension of yourself that you allow others to hear. And you could feel that with Prince.

Exactly how I describe a good player and a musical talent. Thee music or instrument itself become an extension of the body. It’s as instinctual and known to you like it’s a part of your self, you need not think of how to play, you play without needing to be completely somewhere else mentally. It’s the prediction of every single note prior to not ever once knowing what is to come next as you freestyle the next part, it has been shown in brain imaging scans there is a huge amount of brain differences shown in a player just playing a known or reading the music and playing music perfectly, and that of someone who plays then slips into that zone of total free styling, brain areas light up in imagery, vision and fantasy, whilst the frontal lobe controlling your ability to actively choose or make a decision as well as you can shuts off. Your ability to choose to play by sheer active conscious playing turns off, leaving you without a real awareness of a conscious decision to make the music of such amazing freestyle like this, and let’s the brain literally transcend into a different place. If you can play any music like this, you may know this place or zone, even if you just love a song and are singing badly but you are lost in it, that zone has you connected to music in ways that are not just consciously doing a thing and hearing a note and motor skill direction. But the place for people like this is simply, musical genius. prodigy of his craft. Rare such a person can be found even amongst the top tier level players who have just grinded their way to where their ability peaks but these people have a natural ability to just be above that without any more trying, it’s an instinct you have or have not got, and wow did Prince have it in abundance.

Guitar thrown to bodyguard (the guy he leaned back into). Interesting fact about Prince's performance. Nobody on that stage knew how or what Prince was going to for his solo except Prince. The first time they saw him do his solo was during that performance.
I believe I also heard that after throwing the guitar he literally just casually walked off the stage, walked straight out the door, jumped in his car and left.
@@motif45505 Sort of-Prince walked back stage and talked with a ZZ Top member before leaving. This is on the RARHOF DVD disc set (not aired). He then jumped into his car and did a concert (that he was late to).
I also heard when they told him what song they were doing, he said he hadn’t heard it before but he’d listen to it before he had to play on it. Lolol. And then he didn’t do the rehearsal. Just to make them trip.

I don’t care who you are, that is pure genius from every perspective. The improv, the performance, the stage presence every fkin aspect of Prince’s solo kicks all of the jams. The fact that he didn’t even turn up for the practice session is just… you prick, but also you god.
According to the article about the behind the scenes to this all-star performance, Prince did show up to rehearse with the Traveling Willburys for this tribute; however, due to a misunderstanding or lack of communication with Marc Mann, the other soloist, Prince did not get a chance to rehearse his epic solo with the group. They literally did not know what he was going to do until they went live the night of the performance. Just incredible musicianship from everyone on that stage in pulling that all together and Tom Petty did a stellar job as band leader.
Prince ended up being Clapton’s favorite guitarist. What more do we need to know??

To keep things firmly in perspective...... When he passed, this guitar god was in the middle of a tour that included NOTHING and NOBODY but him, a piano, and a microphone. That amount of talent and swag is insane and borderline unnatural.

of exhibitions showing "more awesome" guitar playing even for Rock music. What the
much larger majority of the world recognizes to be a "Master Guitarist" (10 skill level) ist
a very short list of about 100 people in every music genre, especially the many different
Classical Guitar Compositions produced from so many of the currently existing 195
countries. Prince Rogers Nelson ist not on that list. :-)
Giving him a 9 score for this performance und guitar playing ist a "fair" assessment.
Honestly, I would have given him an 8.75 score simply because his performance was
not quite awesome as the many others that exist who should get a 9 score, und only
a few of the current Pop music guitarists exhibit the musical skill to be recognized as
Master Guitarists (10s).

@@jeremyandrestevenson2313 You can find replicas (made in China) for a few hundred dollars. They are unbranded. They look amazing but are of generally poor quality. The old original ones though I have seen on sale for like 15K. So, short answer, it all depends what you are looking for.
The guitar is labeled as a Honner, but as noted, they make harmonicas, not guitars. Honner did what many companies do, they approached a guitar company to make a version of a guitar with their name on it to sell. They went to HS Anderson who already made the "Mad Cat" - that is one tell as to where the guitar was made.
From what I read, there were only 2 companies HS Anderson labeled guitars for, Honner and Harley Benton. So, a Honner labeled Mad Cat in the '70s, made it to a pawn shop and legend has it that Prince picked it up for $30. HS Anderson still makes a small run of these guitars (apparently less than 10) every once in a while not each year. I believe the company has changed hands since the '70s, but they are still being made on the same production floor as Prince's original guitar.
Another tell on a lot of knock off guitars you find is that they have a different color "leopard print" pick guard. The cellulose HS Anderson uses looks black and brown like Prince's, not the black and yellow you see on knock offs, because they have the original source at their disposal. On a down note, the HS Anderson headstock had to change (they added a small cut in) after Fender sued them - and other other companies, for duplicating Teles and Strats. That to me is minor considering they use all the other specs of the original.
In 2021 I picked up mine for a little less than $1,200 + shipping. I saw it come up on Reverb, bit the bullet and bought it as soon as I saw it after having searched for one over the decades. I effing love the guitar! ❤

I don't think people understand how talented most famous musicians are. They sing, dance, act, and play several instruments and play them well. Prince is definitely one of those people.
Most don't understand that these people have multiple gifts but you only see the one thats earns them a living.
Fun fact:
Prince didn't know the song when he agreed to play in the tribute, and rehearsed it only once with the others. And that rehearsal was a failure.
Prince was supposed to do both solo's with the other guitar player, but both times during the rehearsal, he backed away to the background and let the other do the solo.
At the end he suggested that he would do the second solo and the other the first. When Tom asked him to join the next rehearsal, Prince said Don't worry, but didn't show up at the following rehearsals.
So the band was worried about how his performance would turn out.
And Prince delivered beyond everyone's expectations.
I didn't research this one, but in my 35 years of playing music professionally I can't remember an instant where anyone was worried over or felt the need to rehearse a solo over an a-minor vamp. Just saying.
Should call it fun fiction. Seems to be a trend the last decade (at least since I've noticed) how people get sold with the "wasn't even trying" bullshit. I recall a magazine article talking about Kings of Leon saying they before they cut their first record they had only played their instruments for a few months... It's all bullshit. You can tell here that Prince knew every note of the original lead and hit those notes when and how he wanted to. This was well practiced. One has no need to rehearse with a band if you know the band is going to be playing the same progression for a certain amount of time. All he needed to know was the scale, the original lead, and how much time to fill.

This guitar solo made a lot of old time rock and rollers sit up and take notice. I know because I'm one of them and I been telling them for years about Prince guitar prowess. But all they saw was the flashiness and a pop star. I've saw him 3 times in concert and knew what he was capable of doing musically. Now they know.

Prince is one of those musicians that doesn't just play instruments. Take guitar for instance... He molds that thing into something else, then makes it blast energy and emotion. That solo is insane
The only person in my head who was as multi talented musically as prince was Zappa. They didn't make remotely the same kind of music but they were both multi (and I mean over 20) instrumentalists who were also amazing composers. Prince obviously had a better voice but they both have massive vaults of unreleased work, and were true workaholics.
Zappa was not given the “Props “ for what he brought to the table!!

While My Guitar Gently Weeps was always a beautiful song. But until Prince played it, I never heard a guitar actually weeping to the song. The words were always poetic & vivid in description but when Prince played it on a guitar (which can't utter a single word) it sang the words & meaning of the song better than anyone who's ever sang it before. And had Prince sang it, he would've rewritten history & we'd think it was his song; like how he sung Bob Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower " better than Bob ever sung it, ever. If I wasn't a fan of Mr. Dylan; I would have thought Prince wrote that like everyone else I knew did. Prince was a once in a lifetime treasure. All hail the Purple One; the Prince Nelson Rogers

He did rehearse, but didn't rehearse with the group. So they had no idea what he was gonna do and are hearing it for the first time like everybody else. I think the important thing is that George Harrison's son was very happy with it.
Prince was a stickler for rehearsing. He would rehearse 10 hours a day with his band when they were preparing to tour. The band would go home and he wouldn't stop playing, writing and recording or putting on a show.

I remember watching that show, it was so amazing to see in real time because at first you see Tom Petty nod at him to play more and then a few bars later Petty seems to nod at everyone else and they all take a couple of steps back and let Prince really go at it. It never gets old.

I loved the look on Bodhi Harrison's face watching Prince do this to his Dad's song. The kid was in absolute heaven.
The only reason I can think of that this wasn't a 10 was it was too short.
Perhaps someone mentioned this already, but I’ve heard that Prince never rehearsed any of his solo for this performance beforehand. They asked him if he’d like to play, he showed up on stage and proceeded to melt faces.
Prince was so underrated at guitar I can’t understand it. He was up there with all the legends. I barely listen to him but he destroyed. More talent in his pinky nail than most, also being fun to watch like Dimebag was.
I will answer your question with the following comparative analogy:
1) GM Chevy Corvette has always been their high performance flagship model- hands down.
2) In 2003, Cadillac division launched a new high performance 2 seater known as the XLR. Featured with a supercharged Platinum XLR-V engine.
3) they did a test drive out in Warren Mi that same year at GM Proving Ground test track, head to head race between a Vette and that XLR.
4) The XLR completely dusted the Vette.
Would GM advertise this when they marketed the XLR?
No.
Why?
Because their commitment to the Corvette as their top high performance Chevy model was to remain unchallenged in the eyes of the consumer. For that is how they marketed it.

Prince was just this little black kid from some unheard of place in Mid America.
It was more than a tall order for Jimmy Hendrix to reach the level of respectibility amongst his white peers in the forum of "guitar gods". And where did he first get his achieved recognition? It wasn't in the US, it was in Europe. A place notoriously more embracing of artists of different races and cultures in their respective art forms.
Here in the US it took longer for them to warm up to Jimmy. But when they finally did, they put this black dude in the same mantle place as the rest of the "flagship" R&R "gods".
Same with Prince.
And I laughed when they reacted to his performance of the John Lennon's classic, when so many had a meltdown

He once referred to himself as "sort of crazy".
Susan Rogers, his studio engineer from 1983 - 1986, and also a professor at Berkeley, has the most fascinating take on what made Prince so incredibly prolific at his craft.

Many of Prince's guitars were custom made for him at 2/3 normal size so he didn't look as small. The man was meticulous in every single detail of his life. My artistic muse 4ever!! Give it a 10 man!

Very dynamic, loved it when he works his way up the neck with open string hammer-on's, the way he comes sliding down the neck, mixing it up with chords, the phrasing and the multitude of other things that I can't even name, amazing! That was one of his greatest solo's.

@@lovenspired 3 minutes. He does them again later as well, but once you know what to look for you will recognize it. A hammer on is when you tap a string with your finger hard enough to sound a note and then release it.

Most people never master 1 instrument as well as Prince did guitar. To be able to play multiple instruments, command a stage, write songs, the way he did. Just imagine if he had focused all that extra effort into just his guitar. He was every bit of the word GIFTED. R.I.P.
When he first came out, it was mentioned how in-the-pocket he was on guitar and bass. People were shocked that it was just one guy because he sounded like he had only played each instrument. The Time's first album is just him (credited as Jamie Star) and Morris. Morris, a bad a** drummer - as well as former drummer for Grand Central Station, Prince's band before he went solo. They tore it up. You can hear Prince's vocals on many of the Time's tracks, including the voice of the Maitre d' on the interlude, Chili Sauce. 🤭

I was at that show 4th row, he also destroyed whole lotta love. Too bad the whole show didn’t make it to the dvd.
To this day there isn't a single recording artist that I've seen more times in concert. 9 times I've witnessed this genius at his craft. I feel extremely fortunate that I was able to do so. I will say my favorites were always his after show mini concerts. Often times he was just a piano player or guitarist and let the band show off their talents.

One of my greatest regrets is not seeing Prince in concert the last time he was in Australia. It was a small venue in Sydney. It would have been great. Unfortunately, I found out about it way too late to get tickets.

I've never read the interview, but supposedly, and I'm paraphrasing here, Clapton was asked by an interviewer "What does it feel like being the greatest guitarist in the world?"
Clapton's reply was (supposedly) "I don't know...Ask Prince."
Again, I don't know how true that is...I've never read the interview/transcript myself. I just know what I've read in comments sections on the innerwebs.
I think Eric would be fine with this... to be fair, if you follow the original story of the Beatles WMGGW recording, Eric's part was un-planned and un-rehearsed. It wasn't even his guitar.
George Harrison picked him up in his car and asked him to come to the studio with him for support and when they got there George gave him his Les Paul and dropped the bomb... please do the solo. It was partly a two fingers to Paul and George Martin (producer) who had hand-cuffed George into doing backing guitar on the new album (he was the fekking Beatles lead guitarist and a song writer in his own right!).
So Eric pulled out a solo on a new Beatles song, with a borrowed guitar, in one take... that has been held up to the spotlight for 50 years. That's the legendary 'Beatles' who Eric looked up to - no pressure then.
Eric remains GOD. But Prince might well have been Jesus Christ.

A friend of mine knows the drummer here...Steve Ferrone and told me Steve said that Prince never showed up for the rehearsal and that he showed up while they were already on stage and played that solo then he threw his guitar up in the air and walked out. That's bad ass motherf'n rock star shit right there.

He was also one of the greatest musicians of all time. So, that's understandable.

Wrong! Lynne, Petty and the others are/were - above all - top notch songwriters, composers and arrangers. They are all "very good" musicians, too, but Prince on that stage was the only real intrumental virtuoso. Full stop.

Their virtues are/were much more concentrated in the field of songwriting, composing and arranging whereas Prince was a genius in both writing AND playing. (Mind you: I was a huge ELO fan in the 70s and 80s, always loved Petty and never really warmed to most of Prince's music - but that's just due to personal taste. Rather objectively, Prince - as a complete artist package - was a league (or two) above anyone sharing the stage with him here.

I have asked myself the same question for years: where the eff did his guitar go? I think it went back to heaven who loaned it out to him. Prince was a magical being. I like to think Prince was on loan from the spirit world and we were lucky enough to experience something of it on earth.
That guitar wasn't played, the notes were let out. It could not be put down, it was unleashed.
Pete Townsend once said that he smashed his guitar because it was unable to convey the music inside of him, as if it was somehow the shortcoming of the guitar. Nothing against Townshend, but Prince shows right here that the guitar is quite capable of conveying the music inside of the right player. "It's the wand that chooses the wizard, Harry." Pete doesn't smash his guitars anymore, by the way. 😉

I'm a HUGE fan of his and been following him since "before soda pop had fizz" and now that he can no longer control what drops on TH-cam there are seriously dozens and dozens of him doing this and a tad more.
