  • Welcome to my journey. This is Learning to Fish, Volume 4. I'm trying like hell to catch bass on a consistent basis and in order to do so, I must learn different techniques. Come along and hangout with me as I attempt to become better. Today I'm at Magnolia Branch Wildlife Reserve, fishing some freshwater lakes where I have caught bass before. Will today be the day I finally catch more than one?

Thank you. I know it's crazy to try to "cram" decades of know how into a couple of months, but I'm gonna keep trying 😂 as long as the weather holds I'll keep going out. So far it's been really mild. I appreciate you watching and commenting as always!

We call them "trouble hooks" I use to grind the barbs off them with a Dremel tool. Easier to get the hooks out the fish but easier to loose a fish, especially if it's a "jumper". I don't fish winter but was wondering if you should be fishing deeper water? Maybe try a crank bait or a jerk bait? Also wondering if you had somewhere you could mount that ruler to where you don't have to "get it out" every time. May save you some time especially if in the tournament itself. Just some thoughts for you. Don't give up.

@monzsterman it could be that I should be fishing deeper? I'm honestly not sure, this is my first year winter fishing. Water temps in this video were about 57. I'm right there with you on mounting the Ketch board, I've been trying to search how other people are doing it. I'm having fun learning and gaining some confidence, but I sure would like to put a really good day together. Thanks for watching friend!

If you use braid tie on a leader.

@howardbenson1173 I haven't found a braid that I like. If I get a backlash, it's nearly impossible to pick out. So I usually fish mono. Thank you for watching and commenting!

I am brand new as well, in fact so new I’ve only caught one bass years ago in usually up in the mountain lakes of Colorado fishing for trout. When I took some time off from a surgery in January a kayak bass tournament TH-cam video came up on my feed. I can’t stop watching them it anything else to do with bass fishing. I hope to get my kayak by the end of the year and start practicing throwing different setups to catch some bass. I am subscribed to you to learn a beginner kayak bass angler strategies. My question for you is what were your first fishing setups? 2 question what was going on inside your head the first time you were in a kayak tournament? Thank you so much take care God bless.

What you said about sticking with what "should be" working for way too long even though it clearly isn't... I can totally relate to that. But I can't relate to fishing in December! So at least you have that. Have you asked other fishermen how they've been doing? It might be well worth a trip to the local bait shop to ask around about what works for others at this time of year. Like I've commented before, back in October I talked to probably dozens of fishermen who all said the fish were just not biting. It might be the same kind of thing where you are. You could be outrageously lucky and the envy of everyone for the little luck you've had lately! It seems to me like you should ask around to clarify and sharpen your perspective.

@jasonm1884 I been in the south for 9 years and I still have to pinch myself whenever I am doing things outside in December and January. 😂 It's weird here, people fish for whatever is in "season". So they target whatever is hot, they'll fish for flounder, reds, trout, crappie, etc. and the tackle shops cater to that style. They think I'm crazy for only targeting one species. I don't know a lot of people, TH-cam kinda is my social outlet, but the ones I have talked to want to tell me how to fish for everything but bass. 😆 It's a Yankee thing they'll tell me 😂

@jasonm1884 if you get a chance, check out the TH-cam channel "eightmiledrifter". He is a guy that fishes in the club I am joining next season. He is very typical of the average fisherman here in this area.

Your fishing that worm way too fast. Let it sink to the bottom, count to 10-1000
Then pop it or shake it, and let it fall to the bottom and do it again

@tonyb-50 I'm thinking you're right for sure. I've watched some videos of guys fishing Texas rig and they aren't working it as fast as I am. Good pointers!
