  • Today I am scouting a "new to me" lake in preparation for an upcoming kayak tournament. And while I'm at it, I share with you my opinion on why fishing tournaments help you become a better angler. If you've been thinking about doing some tournament fishing, there is no time like the present. You don't have to be good.....just do it.

Being forced out of the comfort zone is definitely something a lot of people resist but something that its imperative to become the best we can be.

I’m amazed at how you analyze things and think about all the little details it makes me realize I’ve had some of the same thoughts but just didn’t know it until you pointed it out .
    Great video!

Thank you Bill! I'm a little too analytical and long winded at times, but we are who we are. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. Ready for another fishing video from you now that you crossed the tailgate off of your to-do list 😂

Thank you! I appreciate the support and encouragement. This will be my first season fishing during the gator mating season...I'd be lying if I said that didn't make me a little nervous. Still, looking forward to the next tournament.

I recommend working on your frog techniques. Work it fast, slow, hard, soft... anything you can think of. They usually strike during the pauses. The frog is such a great tool because there are so many places where you can't use anything else. There is NOTHING in fishing quite like having an explosion on a frog. I don't know why it's different but it's unique among topwaters. There's been a couple times where I had a hit right at the boat and I almost wet my pants! I'm having bad problems with my right hand and I believe it's a result of too much frog fishing last year and the way I gripped my rod. I still plan on doing lots of frog fishing this year! I catch the most fish and the best fish on a Texas rig but I get the most action and the best action on a frog. I find it really difficult to set the hook with the frog but I never cared because those explosions are so much freakin' fun! Long live The Frog!🐸

Oh! By the way, I saw an actual frog clumsily leaping across some lily pads last year. It was so cool seeing that! It changed the way I work the frog. Keep an eye out for stuff like that. I got the idea that I was working it too fast and too gently. They splash a lot! I started getting more action with big tugs and longer pauses. But like I said, you can't go wrong by varying your methods.

@jasonm1884 that would be cool to see an actual frog in that situation! I actually said in a clip that didn't make the cut that my first frog blow up was probably gonna scare the crap out of me. 😂 I'm definitely going to be working the frog quite a bit during the tournament. I'm guessing the grass and pads are going to be even thicker by next weekend. I've heard the hook ratio for a 🐸 isn't the best, I guess the thing that makes them weedless is the same thing that makes setting the hook difficult. I have to continue learning new lures and techniques, like a frog and fluke or swim baits. All of it actually... hahaha. Thank you for watching my friend. I'm really hoping to get a good video from the tournament and actually have something to show 😁

I'm watching this video when I don't have a Kayak, and haven't been fishing for years. Although I will say, it is better to experience something, than wonder what if. Also, a little competitive side will help what ever hobby/craft you take part in, as it will let you focus on what is needed to make that craft better.

@666bluegreen I couldn't agree with you more friend. The biggest regrets are usually the things we didn't do as opposed to the things we did do. I really appreciate you watching and commenting. I'm kinda surprised that someone who really doesn't fish would tune in. I'm glad you did!

I got my kayak last summer, and had time to get it on the water only once. Planned on fishing a lot this summer, but had a heart attack in Feb. Going through rehab now, so my advice is to not wait! We are never promised tomorrow, so if you want to do it, don't put it off!!

@montycraig5659 WOW I hope that everyone who sees this video reads your comment. Very touching and raw and honest. I'm happy you are on the mend and I hope you are able to get back on the water soon! Thank you for watching and sharing!! You are very much appreciated.

Try to convince your doctor that fishing is an important part of rehabilitation! All kidding aside, that sounds like good advice. Hope you feel better soon, my man.

Good stuff, I like your analysis of tournament fishing. It’s a great way to learn different techniques that work in your area that you may never have used otherwise. Hopefully the fish will be active Saturday!

@Eightmile_Drifter thanks man. I love the tournaments because they are forcing me to learn in hopes of being relevant 😂. I also love fishing new water. Scouting Dead Lake was good for me. I've got lures tied on now that I normally wouldn't because of what I learned by seeing the lake last week. I think the fishing is going to be good...see you Saturday!
