Pokémon's NEXT Battle Gimmick Will Be...

We've had mega evolution, Z-moves, dynamax and gigantamax, and terastalization - so what's next for Pokémon battling?

I'd honestly prefer already existing gimmicks being used in new games, like mega evolution in Let's Go but more accessible

I wish they'd keep terastalization. It was such a good mechanic.
Also colorful mist around them implies they're fighting

This is definitely not a defense gimmick, it's offense:
giving 3 turns a rock immunity to Volcarona is potentially deadly
giving 3 turns a grass immunity to Quagsire, you just wait the 3 turns and click the grass move, just prolonging 3 rounds
not to mention that resist berries already act similar. makes it pretty unlikely to be a gimmick next gen

i like this idea! could be really interesting! Im a big fan of gimicks having to be a held item again as well, i think it helps keep it frmo being TOO overpowered if they have to give up an item slot for it

Giving Immunities to Pokémon is brilliant. I can see players giving the Fairy Item to Sableye and Spiritomb.
And all pure Electric and pure Normal Types would respectively benefit from Ground and Fighting essences.
My gimmick for Gen 10 is Exalink - a broken version of Assist since Terastal is practically one's Hidden Power.
A Pokémon basically borrows the moveset of another one from your party... now being able to use 8 moves.
This would be instrumental in competitive because you know have to teambuild with a support gauge in mind.
Maybe this could too be applicable to the 2 mons who aren't in the 4v4 VGC Doubles, they act as backup units.

Mario RPGs have been on my mind recently so part of me wants Pokemon to incorporate action commands. Like you can get a critical hit, block, or dodge attacks by pressing a button at the right time.

I think it's good idea but will be unfair for pokemon that only have 2 weaknesses

Although I did like z moves and megas and really don't hate dmax/gmax or terastal I've been thinking since I first saw the kaiju battles of sword and shield that it was time to stop, honestly wish they'd take more inspiration from black and white with it's only new Pokémon Dex not to the same extreme but I think one thing I really haven't liked since x and y is that the new Pokémon are always out numbered by the old which in my opinion leads to Pokémon of the newer regions not feeling as important

Very exciting idea. I've never thought about the fact that all specials in the generations are only offensive.

It is too soon to discuss anything related to the next generation when generation 9 hasn't ended yet. Legends: Z-A is set for 2025 so I expect generation 10 will probably begin in 2026.
Terastalization is used defensively in the competitive scene though.
Thinking more about Battle Gimmicks, each has a theme. Gen 6 is Evolution, Gen 7 is Moves, Gen 8 is Size, Gen 9 is Type. I think that was how they came up with ideas for new gimmicks. So type immunity is very similar to Gen 9's theme, I doubt they will touch on that again. But who knows, it's all hypothetical.
