Milan Art Institute Mastery program / Studio vlog / Truth About the Mastery Program
I was stuck on week 8 for seven weeks. I finally decided to move on. The difficulty in getting a model to fit with my schedule was the majority of the problem. When I finally got a model I was so left-brained I couldn't draw a stick figure and I bailed on the assignment. I will come back to it but for now I have moved to week 9 to try and keep going. In this studio vlog I talk about the challenges I had with week eight.
The mastery program opens up four times a year. The next time this program is open for enrollment is August, 2021. This studio vlog talks about the mastery program, the goals is to help people decide if it is right for them. As an art vlog sometimes, I chatter rather than create any productive vlog actionable content. The Milan art institute mastery program is a year-long deep dive into online art education. From the Milans art studio they teach and demonstrate mixed media art, mixed media collage art, mixed media portraits, mixed media painting and a host of other mixed media art techniques for beginners and experienced artists alike. In addition to mixed media art tutorials the Milan program's art education videos include oil painting for beginners and the more experienced, charcoal drawing techniques, observational drawing, indirect painting, abstract art techniques and pretty much anything else one wants to learn about creating classic or contemporary fine art.
There is time spent exploring a variety of art techniques and mediums. The Milan Art Institute mastery program is created and taught by Elli Milan and Dimitra Milan. The mother-daughter duo have a gift for teaching and this course is everything one would need for art education. It moves along at a very doable pace, I am taking it while teaching and coaching full time. There are breaks included in the curriculum to allow one to get caught up or spend more time in a special area of interest.

Any other peeps in the Milan Art Mastery Program have a challenge with week 8? I have moved on and will revisit it down the road. Even though I didnt finish all of the assignments to my satisfaction I still learned a ton.
I am in the program too. The point isn’t to get stuck and stay there. Do your best to finish the assignments. Did you learn something? Take notes and keep a journal. I decided to not get hung up on my drawing skills. I have improved tremendously and that was my goal. As I work through the program, my drawing skills are continually improving. Don’t let the left brain keep you from moving on.
Hey Darla, ya mon. Good advice there. I moved on, I was stuck for a bit no getting around it. One has to also have a change of attitude as you for sure will run into things that 1-you don't like, 2-you suck at. NO BIG DEAL. That is exactly why I took the course to start with is to get a little bit better at the skills that I lack, but more importantly to get a whole lot better at the things I love and am passionate about and even find some new things. @@ArtGeekTeaching There are several oil painting techniques that I didn’t care for but did the assignment. I’m working on my final painting for Part 1. I’ve been a professional artist for five years. I’ve learned so many things. This program has been life changing for me. I’m excited to get to mixed media.
Have you watched any episodes of the Outstanding Artist on TH-cam? These contestants are so inspiring and their on the spot creativity is so amazing. 😊
@@darladonley3175 yup. I have watched most of them, dropped off about 6 months ago when I couldnt keep up with things again. I think everyone should be a member even if they don't take the course.
Yup! I passed on it - the height of Covid, I live alone in the boonies, and wasn't interested in portraits. The rest has been great so far.
Your art is so awesome! I'm blown away by it. The style is very unique and makes them stand out from other portrait art I've seen. I plan on signing up for the Mastery program in Jan 2022.

Same thing happened with week 8 for me! Just so hard to get through it so I moved on myself. I need to revisit it. I would love to know more about your digital work. I am also a photographer and love digital art
Hi Cathy! Thank-you for taking time to comment. I have not been digital painting for the last several years as I really have been focused on traditional media. I am moving back to incorporating some digital in my workflow in a few months after I finish putting together some other courses I am working on. To me the best world is to begin by creating your reference in PS as you can control layout and design, use PS or painter for your contour then finish with traditional media. Having said that I really do like subtraction. The other thing I have spent a tremendous amount of time doing are non-silver, what I call Heritage Printing". That is gum bichromate, carbon printing, gumoil, platinum palladium with gold etc.
I was thinking in joining the mastery program, but first I took a workshop one to make more profitable portraits and the other one is named acrylics remastered , but I’m soooooo disappointed. First of all there is a large material list that once they start the workshop , got missing !!! I mean, they start layering and adding stuff and layers but they don’t explain what is what . The whole workshop has no structure at all , and this is a very constructive critique , because most people will do what I did, test the waters first with an affordable sample and see how they teach, so then they will be able to give more security at the time of making a descision of such huge investment for the program. So now I don’t think the program is worth the money , based on the workshops methodology . As a context I am a complete beginner, I have only work with watercolors but I want to expand in to other media . Good luck for those who joined the program
I am so sad to hear you had a negative experience with Milan institute, my experience with very positive. I might suggest that you look at the myriad of free courses to get an idea of how they teach. The mastery course I felt was pretty thorough. The other thing is, I would contact them. I have found them very easy to work with, perhaps they would give you a refund or another course to try. While it is a business and they need to be profitable I really believe that they are called and driven to help other artists. Thank-you for taking time to comment. Godspeed in your artistic journey!
I was pretty much a complete beginner when I started The Mastery Program, and although the program isn't perfect, I really was blown away by the quality of what I was able to produce! I am not a natural artist, but was passionate about art and really wanted to learn how to make good art. This program was perfect for me. I had never heard of Milan Art Institute before. I just went with my gut. I sold several of my works within a few months of starting the program just by posting them on Facebook for me friends to see, and then, encouraged, I did a Facebook auction. There is much to learn from Mastery, and I'm very happy I took the leap! I'm still part-way through 1½ years later, having taken some side adventures, and I'm coming back to focus on it now. A group of us being coached by the same coach (Tanya, who you see in the current season of The Outstanding Artist) got together and have a support group, and that is awesome too.
yeees. I would highly encourage the coaching also. They will find a great match and all of the coaches are bomb. I am a total fan of the Milan's and the work they do.@@janinafisher101

Thank-you Pat. Milan is a great school with amazing instructors and staff. Top notch peeps. Part of the challenge with any art instruction is doing in long enough with enough intent and purpose to learn the material without becoming a clone of those gifting you their knowledge. Sometimes just takes time to pass through that I think.

I totally skipped Week 8 too. It was the height of Covid, and I wasn't going anywhere, had no interest in portraits, and have even forgotten I skipped it until I saw this. 😊 I got stuck after the mixed media section - being unable to find my "voice" or create compositions I like. I've been on a side tangent trying out abstracts for quite a while, and just about to revisit Mastery. I have gotten a lot of value out of the program and am very happy I signed up for it 1½ years ago. I was pretty new to art, and what I have created has amazed me! And that people are buying my art has been even more amazing!
I have been creating like crazy, getting courses ready to launch and trying to finish a book. Ridiculous busy. Having said that I am itching to get back to it so I can learn some more. Plus they are just fun peeps to follow and "hear" from on the daily.

I have looked at Nicholas's course several times. I will no doubt take it one day. If you liked Nicholas's course look at Pam Caughy's. I think it is the best value online. She is AMAZING and it is much more affordable than most things out there. Great community as well.@@janinafisher101
@ArtGeekTeaching I'm a big Pamela Caughey fan! I found her during Covid and love her work. Her course was not affordable for me until she offered the beta version of a new course for $50 to a small group. I saw it right after she posted it and was able to get in! Very lucky! I learned a lot from her. Her TH-cam videos are really helpful. I am signed up for Nick's next CVP which starts mid-March. He has a free pre-CVP Zoom course March 4-8. I’m not in the Milan program but maybe you’re being too hard on yourself. Most artists I know (even the ones with 20+ yrs experience) take some time getting back into the same level of live drawing after taking a break, even it it’s just for the summer. I find that drawing a bunch of faces or figures prior helps live drawing to go more smoothly for me. Your art is lovely!!
Hey Lori! Thank-you for commenting. You are right, loosening up with some generic faces would certainly help get into right brain which would help live drawing immensely. While I do like gesture sketching, short 30s-up to maybe 3 minutes I have never been enamored with live drawing sessions even though I know the benefits/gains are huge.
And there’s always that time where we want to find something we enjoy moreBut sometimes we have to enjoy what we enjoy right now and not look for more all the time if you’re looking for more senior must not be happy where you’re at if you’re not having fun doing are you doing the wrong thing I could be wrong it should be fine you should enjoy it and it’s OK to always look for more but we should enjoy what we have

Drawing a portrait or figure from life is not a one-week thing. I teach a 3-day life-drawing course (6 hours a day) starting with very basic drawing exercises to engage the right side of the brain and ending on the third day with a simple still-life setup or even drawing your own hand. An optional fourth day can then be dedicated to an introduction to drawing the figure from life. I taught myself drawing portraits from life by mere repetition over many months until I got it right. But you need to stay in practice. Life-drawing is just THE most rewarding art practice! I hope you got over the hitch. I would love to do the Milan Mastery Program, but our exchanger rate to the dollar puts it out of reach. I have been an artist for 35 years but I can see that one could learn a lot from them.
True that. drawing from life takes a ton of practice to really get it dialed in. While I love to draw portraits I never have had much interest in realism. That likely comes from my background as a photographer, if I want something realistic I can create a fantastic images with my camera and digital skillet. For a painting my personal aesthetic is much more loose and abstract so it makes sense that I am not really drawn to drawing the form from life. The life drawing classes I took at our local community college were the same, not at all enjoyable for me. Having said that I still believe it to be super important to be able to render a figure with proper proportions and is well worth the challenge to learn.Milan is an incredible journey with the most incredible people on the planet in my opinion. Well worth the investment. As a life long learner, I always was interested in a traditional atelier style education since I didn't get that in college. Milan provided that.
Did you ever revisit week 8?? It definitely is a tough week, but such an important challenge.
Milan Art! Hi John or Dino! Actually I am not sure who on the team does the FB and other social media from Milan I guess. Thank-you for your question. I have re-visited week 8 a few times. While my work in a timed situation from life still looks kindergarten ish I am moving on AND I did learn a ton which is the whole point. The biggest challenge for me is that I am sooo slow with life drawing. I agree with you though, it is super important and at least now I do like something from life and that is gesture sketchs.

HI Karen! I am also 63. I believe thee course is worth the price. I am self educated specific to studio art for the most part. My formal training was graphic arts, education, business and art history so I didnt have much on the studio side. While I dont think one has to have specific studio education to be successful I think it can shorten the learning curve. The Milan program is awesome, the family are top notch and just amazing people. My mentor walked me through things and what I have found with most things one is trying to learn, when you get stuck is when you are getting ready to break through to the next level. I can't say enough good things about the Milan Art Institute. I am not finished yet and will get back to it when my life and business situation get settled.

Hi Patricia, thank-you for your kind comment. The portrait images I have in the video are mixed media that includes digital. I start with a photograph that I personally shoot. I have a course on DVD that I am in the process of updating as Photoshop, Corel painter and other digital imaging software used for various parts are outdated. It is one of the things I love about traditional media, it doesn't really get "outdated". I found that the traditional media parts aree still the same, the techniques with digital are the same but the software and interface changes so much every couple years that you have to see-do everything instead of just small updates each year.

Thank-you for your comments. One of the many great things about art and creators is that everyone has their own aesthetic and there are creators out there making things to satisfy each one of them. While I appreciate the time it takes to develop the talent to paint hyper realistic images it is not for me. As a artist with a photographic background I have the capability to create photorealistic imagery with those skills better than anything I could ever paint. So, for me my paintings need to look like a painting and not photo-realistic.
Then why are you not doing what you enjoy why are you trying to find something else you don’t need people to tell you which direction to go you need to follow what you enjoy what you like what you love you need to follow you and not try to develop something other people think you should Do what you do how do how do you enjoy
??? Not sure what you mean. I am doing exactly what I want to be doing and have done what I want pretty much most of my life. I don't need anyone to teell me what I should be doing, and likewise really never have. Having said that, I am a life-long learner. There is tremendous value in doing things that are difficult for you and things you would never otherwise do unless part of a course or something. That is what the Milan Mastery course. It aligns with my goals perfectly but that doesnt mean there are things in the course I dont want to do. If one picks and chooses what you do in a course like this, you miss opportunities for growth and quite frankly exoeriences.
I joined the MAI because I wanted to take my art to the next 100 levels. I’ve learned that there are so many techniques out there that I’ve never tried. Plus, there are exercises in Part 2 that will help you find your voice. It’s not just about painting what you want or how you want. It’s showing you all these techniques that can take your skills to new levels and outside the box.
I’m not sure what “truth” about the Milan art program you’re trying to convey here. 🤔

@@williamroberts1819 Oh I see what you are saying. I would have to respectfully disagree. While some of the work in Hobby Lobby may be similar in style there is a pretty big difference in quality. Hobby Lobby artists follow trends, the Milan family has been painting for decades and it would be safe to say the techniques and style they developed were long before any current trends of drip and grunge came around. Also it is much deeper than that, the program is comprehensive in covering business, marketing as well as a host of different mediums. It gives students a well rounded background as they develop their own voice. Thank-you for commenting.

Thank-you. I think anyone can create whatever they want. It just takes time and persistence. Deciding WHAT you want to create, that is the hitch. To many choices. I don't really care about the outcome as much because I know if one spends enough time in a process you will get what you are looking for. That means, I really have to enjoy the process and that is more what I look for. Something I really enjoy doing. Thank-you for taking time to comment!

Hi Ana, thank-you for taking the time to post. I think the background music is not the problem as much as the sound quality of the vocal audio. These videos are a bit older and I was still trying to figure out how to capture decent audio. Not there yet but getting closer.
@@ArtGeekTeachingI find it very hard to separate music from speech. Many neuro divergent people would have the same issue. For me if music is playing it has priority over anything else I hear. Turning up your own volume would turn up the work needed to cope with two stimuli at once.

@@itsjudystube Our sound quality has improved for sure. We are going to continue some testing specific to sound and will be recording more videos with no background music at all while I am talking. Thank-you for taking time to comment.
