The front brake is your best friend.
So you're saying now I have a friend?
@tizzlekizzle yup!
I just went to MSF course in Bulgara. I said to the instructor that I have watched a lot of Moto Jitsu videos. The instructor smiled and said that I should be prepared for 80% of the stuff already. He said there is a big difference with the guys who have watched this kind of content and those who did not. In that way he can focus on the most important to observe and correct students doing the exercises instead to explain a lot of things on the spot.
rev matching, trail braking
and smooth squeezing of front brakes
these three skills really make your riding experience better🎉
infact i rev match while emergency braking 😅
without using rear brakes
Hi Greg,,, the time you told me to practise stopping in a high speed corner was no drama as I did exactly as you said. It is great to know how to do it.
I was talking to an Instructor here in Australia and he was a little amazed.
I never have any fear of the front brake, as you say it requires PRACTISE.
Thanks again for your teaching. Chris
I rode bicycles before hopping on a motorbike, and the front brake was my go to even then. It was so weird to hear my coworkers questioning why I prefer using the front brake, while I was chainging the front brake line to stee braided but leaving the rear as it is.
If I was in the wrong gear because I focused on braking, then I could just get into the right gear after the corner, no harm. But there's no going back from going into a corner too hot.
I'm a new rider, been trying to put these concepts into practice, what really helped me understand the physics of the front break was for me to do a series of small slaloms/S patterns at highway speeds, with and without the front break. With the front break applied, it feels far more controlled and tighter, as the front tire loads up. I feel like this is a good first step to progressing to using trail breaking on the regular. Before I was trying to do it without really understanding why it was a benefit.
I have found anything you can do smoothly on a bike tends to be the better way of doing it. Excellent video.
i got a question. why am i supposed to be smooth with the gear lever? i understand the clutch but whys it matter if i downshift quick?
Getting used to the “feel” of the front brake or even both brakes for that matter, on my new bike as a newer rider, was extremely beneficial for me. Like MJ said, find a no or low traffic location and speed up a little and then apply the brake, speed up more and then apply the brake etc until I got the “feel” of my brakes. For me, it’s Ease when I Squeeze! Nothing good happens when I Grab and Snatch! 😎🏍️💨🇺🇸✌️
I know this may not get to you but your videos like this i applied to track and yeah it works and i got so much faster, then when i got better i added body position and it all blended. Vision was a huge issue when i realised it then i stopped doing 50 pencing or 50 centing.
I wish I had this argument straight in my head when I was younger and started riding. Everyone would say do not touch the front brakes or you will crash or even flip over. I knew it was not right. But I only knew it from my own experiences so it's just a gut feeling. I couldn't explain to them clearly without getting interrupted. It's like one against the whole family.
I went with my gut and practice the front brakes little by little until I get comfortable enough. Slowly squeezing is absolutely spot on! I also notice that the better I can slow down or stop the bike, the less scared I am to go fast.
At one point my rear brake was locking the wheel so I asked the mechanic to remove the rear brake pads and ride around using only front brakes for some days. (It was a drum brake. When it gets wet, it sometimes locks the wheel up).
I took the opportunity to practice even more with the front brake.
I've been riding fast since 2011 and still in good shape. Front brakes are super important. Please use it.
Thanks!!
If your afraid of the frt brake, sell your bike.
lol 😂😂
Stoppies all the way bro
What's a rear brake? I do use it at very low speed.
I just downshift to engine brake instead of using the rear brake, slows down the rear tires equally well. Not a huge point in using it most of the time instead of downshifting, which is better anyways. @@jakejudson8578
Don't sell your bike... Practice more so your not afraid
thanks for this lesson, helps a lot.
A insight into the basic skills/risks down shifting while simultaneously already negotiating the corner, leaning, with slight front brake pressure would be good. It’s a very different mindset let alone potentially perceived skill to undertake in slow practise as opposed to braking prior to the corner with the bike in a straight vertical angle. I notice this isn’t mentioned much. Lot more simultaneously going on. Enjoy your info.
A few years ago I was smooth on the front brake coming into a tight corner but came off the brake too fast, the front tire unloaded and lost traction. Listen to this advice.
Thanks for the refresher❤
Front brake ftw
Still remember when I was practicing to ride motorcycles my uncle told me everyone can go fast, its easy just throttle but its the braking that matters😊.
So when I go out for ride, I practice emergency braking, swerving etc.
The front brake is my go to as well. Too much rear brakes and/or a heavy down shift - and next thing you know the back tire is skidding.. it's quite an alarming feeling if you've ever had it happen.. lol..
@@partyguarder it's fun to do it in purpose
I always found this so strange because I was taught to fear the REAR brake. I would hardly ever use it until I became a lot more experienced.
It WAS a hundred years ago, but when I first had my Honda 90, I was terrified of the front brake! I somehow had the vision that I would instantly go flying over the handlebars if I used it! So I relied almost entirely on the rear brake. I think it was only toward the end of the time that I had the bike that I finally _began_ to work the front brake into the mix. Of course, The Honda's brutally intense acceleration always made me ride cautiously, anyway...
Even for a beginner like myself i am never afraid of the front brake. It's mind boggling why there is so much misinformation about it 😮
Just learned the hard way! 🤦🏽♂️😭
You can grab your front brake as hard as you can in the middle of the corner........ If you're using only your ring finger. Literally works for pretty much 98% of the situations.
If you're afraid of the front brake, you cannot ride. Period. That is all...
Trailing the front brake while cornering on a steep downhill is fun !
There's a reason that sport bikes have two huge brake rotors on the front, and only one small rotor on the rear.
Absolutely !! I started riding with childhood friends that have been riding for two decades and I was dumfounded when they all said they barely use front brakes ..I’m shocked they still ride ..
Its very subtle, drum brakes are better in this respect coz it's generally less touchy. Its best to practice locking the front wheel on dirt to learn locking the front wont bring u down immediately, it can lock for up to a second b4 u can't save it.
I'm never using the brakes before cornering.. I always felt like I will make it without braking at 50-70mph speed. As someone who lived and spend my entire child-teenagehood riding a motorcycle in indonesia's roads, it's just so weird whenever I see someone braking before entering the corner 😅
front break during turns makes a sharper turn by lowering the bike into the front wheel but outside of pro racers squeezing out this tiny benefit whats the point for increasing risk of making mistakes? my front break is sharp and the back one is never strong so wont yank
Slow = smooth = fast.
What happens if you have dct?
The same, the transmission has nothing to do with it
I own a Honda Rebel CMX1100 DCT, and I assure you that the front brake is just like any other brake on a motorcycle. The technique of using the front brake is the same. On the DCT there’s actually less to worry about because there’s no clutch, so that means I can concentrate more on my breaking technique. As I apply the brakes, the DCT down shifts accordingly. However, there’s been instances where I would use the paddle shifters to downshift quicker if needed. Long story short, what MJ is demonstrating applies to DCT bikes as well. 😎🏍️💨🇺🇸✌️
Do we use the front brake as much in the rain?
Yes. Same still applies, but now you gotta give even more smoothe inputs on the brake. No sudden jerks else you could loose traction.
@6:27 😂😂😂 OMG SO TRUE. If you dont master the brake and/or practice/learn trail braking its like throwing dice your gambling your life in the corner.
PEOPLE LISTEN TO WHAT GREG SAYS!!!! shut up and practice
Hey, nice video! I have a question. I recently hit the tracks for the first time and I was trying to corner with the advanced body position. And I was riding a Ninja 300 with stock tyres. I tried to lean and use my body but I think I need to put my body out a lot so I don't have to lean much. No matter how much I put I don't think I can scrape the knee sliders. If you have a Ninja 300 with at least the stock tyres (110/70 - front and 140/70 - rear), could you please make a video of that on how to corner with that bike. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
Without watching you ride it's impossible to say, too many variables.
Do you work out? Good posture and strong core muscles are essential for riding better. In my opinion.
I'm in England so I ride on the left side of the road.
My right side of my body isn't as strong as my left. I find leaning into the right doesn't feel as comfortable as when I lean into the left. I also prefer riding closer to the curb because naturally I'm using the left side of my body more because its the dominant side.
So maybe think about your posture and whether or not you feel more comfortable leaning one side more than the other. If you have a bad body alignment it could effect riding performance.
@@2WheelsGood.01 hehe yea I understand. Hence I requested him for a video. Because I've seen people leaning less and lying on the track 😂.
And I've seen people leaning a lot too. So I don't know what i should follow. What i know about my riding style is that I lean a lot than putting my body out.
@oe4927 yea I do workout. I don't think I have issues with strength. One thing i noticed is that when I did a lot of laps I felt my knees burning. So maybe my knees are weak. I don't know.
Keep your inside elbow bent and arms loose
im not afraid of the front brake....i only use front brake. ive been riding for 2 years and i still feel like im riding a bicycle with hand brakes only....LOL
Can you do a video explaining the physics of front vs rear brake.
I was always under the impression you want to use rear brake for trail braking in corners, because the front brake causes the forks to compress and negatively impact cornering.
Yeah ive heard the same in my learner lessons, something about the forks being compressed
i only trust front brake, idk maybe it's only me or anyone feels the same way, it feels like you have so much control of your bike with front brake, and i have alot of bad times with rear brake, so i decided to use front brake only and took off my rear brake 🤣🤣🤣
Apparently Barry sheen never touched his rear brake the entire race. He could have taken it off
PHD in front brake.
Master it in 2025
You do and think what you like,,,, I hope you survive.
I come here for the sound effects. Not the knowledge
This video is about track riding, not for the road; you are so muddled up Greg! 😲
Brakes to slow, Gears to go.
Dont use it while in the middle of cornering, you WILL go down
You have completely missed the point of the video.
Great video man. All of your info is MONEY
Life saving
