  • A Hawker stall that serves delicious freshly cooked Chye Tow Kweh (white carrot cake) for 40 over years in Singapore.
    The boss is meticulous and skillful with each huge pan of fried carrot cake he cooks
    Even though it is known as carrot cake here, it is made up of a white cake which is mostly rice flour and radish.
    One of our favorite local hawker food, it is savory dish eaten mostly as breakfast or a supper snack.

    This guy is the 2nd generation boss. His dad was the first to cook this delicious food many years ago. We always have to wait for a long time for this. But it’s worth the wait. And it can be eaten as breakfast, lunch, dinner or supper! It’s really good! Savory goodness!

    To clearup why there isnt any carrots;
    It is actually asian radish or daikon. In many asian languages, they are called "white carrots" because it looks like a oversized white carrot
    Edit: why it's called cake: most likely be because it was simplier to use the properties of cake being a made from a batter, rather than making a new name for each type of Asian snack.

    To those curious as to how it tastes, its salty, floury, eggy and super fragrant with soy, garlic and 'wok hey' or charred flavour (depending on the artistry of the chef). Fried carrot cake here in Singapore comes in two variants: black (dark soy with a more intense wok hei) and white (light soy with more of an eggy flavour). Yes, the carrot part of the dish is actually radish because in mandarin Chinese radish is called 'white carrot'.

      In Germany we make Cheesecake with Quark, which is more like yogurt with cream than any type of cheese, but I guess that's still closer than carrot cake without carrots.

      Because in Singapore there's regular inspection and then each establishment will be graded.
      The stalls that didn't meet the mark will be suspended from operating.
