Phantom Brave is a one-of-a-kind game. Everyone on this planet should experience playing it at least once in their life. This sequel has gigantic shoes to fill.
I don't know if it's *one* of a kind... two of a kind maybe with Makai Kingdom. Arguably one of several when you add Disgaea, Soul Nomad, and La Pucelle to the mix... still, it's unique among them.
I just personally have to temper my expectations, we can't get that big moment with Ash and Morona from Phantom Brave 1 (I can't believe I'm actually getting to disambiguate this game.) But this game looks super fun already, and I mean, I doubt it'll have a BAD story, just not as much of an emotionally investing story.
Agreed! It's one of those games where even if the gameplay has shortcomings everything else is so unique and well done that you can't help but love it.

Interestingly the footage used for specifically for the Nintendo of America direct appears to be older since the footage of the game for the Japanese release is not only cleaner graphically, but also the frame rate looks fine as well
@@DraconicGamer13 But in the japanese trailer they are using the same old art of the Archer from Disgaea 5 while in this version it's a new one, I think that was an older version with less content and that's why it runs smoother, but maybe I am not remembering correctly and the art in this is old too
That feeling when you wake up in the morning, are chilling during coffee break at work and just like that you find out a sequel to your favorite game of all time, absolute obscure masterpiece from 20 years ago has a sequel announced. Not sure how to react. Really could have done with classic NIS spritework instead of 3d though, PB with D5 graphics and performance? Just imagine.
Ermagerd I know what you mean!!! Though, on the Switch 2 I'm sure this will look snappy. I'm so excited to dive in again and make another invincible healing tank Marona using a Vase LOL. The story was great and timeless, too. I hope they really get into their writing roots on this, with the lackluster last few Disgaeas (still gotta beat 7)
I don't even want the pixel graphics as much because the animations themselves have downgraded when you compare from something like D3. I wish NIS took notes from Vanillaware. I loved the visuals of the Refrain and Galleria.
Legit almost cried when this showed up during the Direct today. Phantom Brave's my favorite game of all time and seeing it get a sequel after so long was the most unexpected of surprises!
I popped off harder in this announcement than I did for Metroid Prime 4. I had to pause the video for a few minutes just to breathe. I love Phantom Brave!
@@Nakx123 The problem is it just doesn't work well with the Switch since it's such an old console. They probably develop it for PS4 then downgrade it for the Switch. Their games will run better on the next console.
@@AnaverdGaiden It just doesn't look good on smaller screens either though. As someone that got a PC handheld. The anti aliasing doesn't work well with such small 3d models at a birds eye view. Fire emblem has a similar issue but they do more engine wise to rectify it and make it look better with each iteration and they have more detailed models as opposed to chibi versions..
Can't believe this game OF ALL GAMES got a sequel after all this time! This means that nearly ANYTHING can happen in the gaming world now imo. Also, glad to hear Sandy Fox reprising her role as Marona!

I hope we finally get a remake of Mother 3 someday so it can officially be released in America. If you want other games that'll make you emotional, I recommend Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, Persona 4 and the Danganronpa series

If this could happen maybe that could too. I haven't played any of those games specifically but it's really funny you mentioned Genealogy, I do a ton of FEH content so I'm still familiar with it lol.

I just played the demo of the OG game on Steam Deck OLED. It's $3.99 rn! I'm so glad I found a new JRPG/Turn based game to no life! I can't wait to play this one next year. I hope it's not stuck on console :c Hope the game isn't that unstable on release, either. Likely just the video lagging. Hopefully the devs can release an optimized product. It'd be embarassing for them if they couldn't get this game to run on 9yo hardware that can handle 8th/9th gen AAAs

Hypeeeee!! Phantom Brave has been my favorite NIS game since I first played it on the PSP over ten years ago in middle school. I've beaten it at least five times, and I always preferred its gameplay, story, and aesthetics over the Disgaea games. I'm really excited about the sequel, though I have noticed some changes, particularly in the art style which seems to borrow a lot from the recent 3D Disgaea games. Ooh, I almost forgot to mention the absolutely fantastic soundtracks composed by Tenpei Sato. His unique style made the music in Phantom Brave truly stand out (Strange Wind, R&R Junkie and Angel's Breath are absolute bangers). I really hope he returns to compose tracks for Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero, and that the new soundtracks live up to the previous game's incredible music. I did notice that the trailer's soundtrack sounds a bit like Disgaea, which makes me a bit concerned, but I'm still hopeful.

Everyday I beg and beg for Disgaea 3 and D2 to finally get remaster versions. But this is just as welcome as those games. I am like so hyped that other SRPG get to have sequels.
Not only am I soooo happy to see finally see Phantom Brave get a sequel, but this is probably the first time I've seen a 3D NIS game that looks really good. Not only have they definitely improved, but I feel like the chibi style just fits Phantom Brave better than Disgaea, especially since the original game used smaller sprites than the Disgaea series. I also feel like it works better with Phantom Brave's battle system. Going with free-range movement means NIS doesn't have to design around grids (and the environments look beautiful) and the trailer shows that skills are finally shown on map again instead of cutting away for all the skill animations like D6 and D7 (which makes sense since PB's skills are generally not as over-the-top as Disgaea's). It should go without saying that I am soooooo excited to finally see Phantom Brave get a sequel.
If this, dear reader is your first exposure to Nippon Ichi Software and/or like tactical RPGs or Disgaea, do yourself a favor and play Phantom Brave 1. Absolute masterpiece from two decades ago.
Last RPG I ever seen that is expected to see. I loved the of original, ita my favorite Nippon Ichi game and one of my favorite strategy RPGs, so I'm keeping my eye on this for sure.

The 3D looks more refined here than in Disgaea. Plus the 3D fits better here especially since the first game had smoll chibi sprites which fits the 3D art direction better.

What a blast from the past. As much as I love Disgaea I'm happy some of the other stuff is getting love.Wild to see Marona and Ash again. Aside from that port I and the mobile game I don't think they've been around since Disgaea 3's dlc
this is not what i was expecting from a nintendo direct but phantom brave is probably my favorite nis title so im all for it, it seems like theyre keeping a lot of the mechanics from the previous game too so im excited
Got the first one when it came out on PS2 just because I liked the cover and I'm so excited for thus sequel! Ready to soak another few hundred hours into this sequel!
Yup, I'mma play this. I hope the postgame is a little easier to progress in this one, the raiding through the Title dungeons got tedious and tested attrition big time in the OG.
Im worried they got rid of the full body 2D character side screen things like cut scenes. It was so unique and made this stand out from disgaea in a good way. Hope they bring thay back
Yeah, Phantom Brave came out on the PS2 a year after the first Disgaea. This is the first time Phantom Brave has gotten a sequel in the 20 years since it came out!
I really hope they don’t streamline the fun out of the game or make the interesting optional mechanics a mandatory part of progression like the new Disgaea games.
@@Jordan3DSIn Disgaea 5 they made getting Gency Exits, statiticians, and leveled units, so much easier with the alchemy, innocent farm, and leveled unit creation mechanics. I used to love slowly staining innocents and then feeling ahead of the curve for the game for my effort, but now there’s no effort required and the mechanics are a required part if you want to engage with the post game at all. I used to love capturing units and adding them to my team, but now it’s worse than just making a unit because you can just make a high level unit and set their stats how you want whenever you want. All of the little optional things that took time and effort but felt rewarding where streamlined to be made easier and then made mandatory parts of the gameplay pretty much because they expected you to use them, so instead of feeling like cool optional mechanics it felt more like bloat where they could have just cut those systems and made the enemies weaker and made the game simpler without having to engage with these mechanics that artificially bloat the numbers without actually impacting the gameplay loop. I know a lot of people were fine with it, but it muddled the whole experience for me. I like having optional content that gives me an edge when I engage with it, but the newer Disgaea games take all of the optional stuff from the previous games, make them 10x easier to get the benefit out of them with none of the work and then design the difficulty around it so that your expected to engage with it. This could only happen with a sequel. These mechanics are only here because they served a meaningful purpose in previous games, but now they’re just a weird trivial mess of convoluted mechanics that only serve to make the numbers bigger than they need to be.
@@christianboi7690 To be fair, Innocents were always required for every Disgaea post-game you just had to grind for them. They literally added a duping mechanic in 3 and 4 to make getting innocents super fast, as well, so is it really that big of a deal that they streamlined it in 5? Personally, I don't think there's a single mechanic you have to use in order to beat a Disgaea game. If you want you can literally just raise enemy levels on the first map and get to level 100 at the start of the game in two seconds, then steamroll it. Or just be comfortably overleveled enough where you can just attack enemies normally to beat each map. Disgaea has always been like that. Do you have any examples of mechanics that you feel that way with? Honestly, I thought 7 was the best Disgaea game since 4 so I'm very happy with the current direction of the series! I'd recommend just trying not to nitpick and enjoy the games for what they are, rather than being upset over small changes.
@@Jordan3DS Disgaea 1 Ive beaten several times base and post game without even knowing about the statician mechanic. I’m fact, once I beat Baal by capturing a bunch of powerful monster units that were stronger than my main unit, by buffing him and sending him into the base panel and then doing that with the new monster unit over and over. There where a lot of options and you didn’t even have to grind that much if you knew what you where doing. I didn’t even know what innocents were when I first played it as a kid, but I beat all the post-game content. Disgaea 2 didn’t even have staticians and the base game was manageable even without grinding felonies. Disgaea 3 and D2 were kind of meh, in my opinion. I didn’t really get into the post-game that much, I don’t think item duping was intentional at all in Disgaea 4. Before the unique abilities were added in later versions it was so hard to set up item duping and after they were it still seemed like an unintentional side effect. The post game in 4 was a little annoying, but I still love 4 for all the unique and interesting mechanics they added, without sullying old mechanics that much. I don’t think I was that nit-picking while playing. I didn’t even know why I wasn’t having fun when I was playing through 5. It just felt off to me. It took a lot of introspection and thought to get to those core ideas I talked about earlier. I actually played through Disgaea 5 with all the post-game content again recently to try and see if I missed something or was just playing it wrong, but I really couldn’t get into it like the older games. I don’t consider myself particularly nit-picky. I’m glad that you enjoyed it and the later titles, I just couldn’t and I didn’t have to pick the game apart to feel that way. The core of the game has always been to attack enemy units and level. There’s depth in how you do that, but what I want from that game is for it to be barely manageable with just that and then all the extra mechanics are there to make if easier once you get the hang of them. I don’t really like having the cheat shop available before post-game in 5 because of that aspect, I get caught up grinding sometimes and it’s so easy to find a good place to grind, level the enemies there and keep doing that until the next few chapters fly by in a matter of minutes. I’ve heard people say to just play those maps at the elevated level too, but that makes the grinding feel meaningless because I’m not letting it make the combat easier like the original intention of the grinding was. It broke the loop for me. I’m flawed, you can’t expect me to play the game in the way that would be the most fun, I just have to use the tools given to me to become as powerful as possible and all throughout 5 I was either overpowered or underpowered compared to the enemies. The older games weren’t like that. They actually had really good progression. It wasn’t one shot or be one shot the whole time. Like I said before, I’m glad you like the direction of the series right now. I guess, I just have specific tastes that aren’t being catered to with them. There are so many new tools in the later games, but I feel more limited than ever with how I approach the late game, because of how you can share evilities and the only thing unique about any units anymore are their abilities and only like 3 of them have unique abilities that are worth anything. Okay, I’m ranting too much. Sorry, that’s an issue of mine.
@@christianboi7690 I guess you technically can beat the post-game like that, but leveling with Statisticians is the more intended way. Personally I love Disgaea 3, I just finished 100%ing it for the first time a few months ago. Item duping was 100% intended in 3 and 4, that's why they included the Puppy Paw Stick and Character World enemy copies of your units. They added it because running the item world a dozen times to get all of the equipment you need is a chore, it's easier to just get one item maxed out then be able to give it to everyone. For me, I just try to play the games without getting OP. In regards to the cheat shop, you were able to raise the enemy levels from the beginning of the game ever since Disgaea 1. The problem of being able to become super overleveled has been a problem in every game in the series, so I've just always played the games straight and only done some grinding if I get stuck on a map. I also always ignore innocents and the item world until the post-game, too. I'm with you on being kind of eh on 5, but for a different reason. For me, I love the music, character designs, map design, and stories in Disgaea, and 1-4 all nailed those aspects while 5 stumbled more. They didn't really have any clever geo panel maps and the story and characters are much weaker than the past games. The OST is phenomenal, at least! I'm also not a fan of how the item world is infinite and you have to play board games for hours to max out each character. Also, Disgaea has had the one shot design ever since 2. Disgaea 1 had a different damage calculation where both you and the enemy took more hits to kill, while from 2 onward attacks do way more damage on both sides. That's just kind of how the series is at this point. They also fixed the EXP curve, too, where you get levels way faster from 2 onward which is great. What would you personally want in a future Disgaea game? I think one thing we can both agree on is that 6 sucks, lol. Also, no worries about the ranting, I'm totally cool with people doing a deep dive into their opinion as long as things don't devolve into petty insults.
All these people hyped for this and I have never even heard of this game. Then again I never heard of anything Nippon Ichi until I discovered Disgaea through Disgaea 5 being pretty similar in tone to Persona 5.
I am a huge fan of Phantom Brave and I first played it on the PSP back in middle school more than 10 years ago. I was so obsessed with the game to the point that I beat it 5 times. Upon knowing there will be a sequel really made my day today. IMO its better than any of the disgaea games. You really should try it. Its so damn amazing

Ooh, I almost forgot to mention the absolutely fantastic soundtracks composed by Tenpei Sato. His unique style made the music in Phantom Brave truly stand out (Strange Wind, R&R Junkie and Angel's Breath are absolute bangers). I really hope he returns to compose tracks for Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero, and that the new soundtracks live up to the previous game's incredible music. I did notice that the trailer's soundtrack sounds a bit like Disgaea, which makes me a bit concerned, but I'm still hopeful.

Everyday I beg and beg for Disgaea 3 and D2 to finally get remaster versions. But this is just as welcome as those games. I am like so hyped that other SRPG get to have sequels.

Not only am I soooo happy to see finally see Phantom Brave get a sequel, but this is probably the first time I've seen a 3D NIS game that looks really good. Not only have they definitely improved, but I feel like the chibi style just fits Phantom Brave better than Disgaea, especially since the original game used smaller sprites than the Disgaea series. I also feel like it works better with Phantom Brave's battle system. Going with free-range movement means NIS doesn't have to design around grids (and the environments look beautiful) and the trailer shows that skills are finally shown on map again instead of cutting away for all the skill animations like D6 and D7 (which makes sense since PB's skills are generally not as over-the-top as Disgaea's).
It should go without saying that I am soooooo excited to finally see Phantom Brave get a sequel.
If this, dear reader is your first exposure to Nippon Ichi Software and/or like tactical RPGs or Disgaea, do yourself a favor and play Phantom Brave 1.

Honestly I don’t mind the 3D for this game. It’ll fit right in with the gameplay style.
The 3D looks more refined here than in Disgaea.
Plus the 3D fits better here especially since the first game had smoll chibi sprites which fits the 3D art direction better.

I hope the postgame is a little easier to progress in this one, the raiding through the Title dungeons got tedious and tested attrition big time in the OG.
This is by far the most unlikely thing I would have ever thought ever to get a sequel. I am honestly really happy about it.
Im worried they got rid of the full body 2D character side screen things like cut scenes. It was so unique and made this stand out from disgaea in a good way. Hope they bring thay back

@@Jordan3DSIn Disgaea 5 they made getting Gency Exits, statiticians, and leveled units, so much easier with the alchemy, innocent farm, and leveled unit creation mechanics. I used to love slowly staining innocents and then feeling ahead of the curve for the game for my effort, but now there’s no effort required and the mechanics are a required part if you want to engage with the post game at all. I used to love capturing units and adding them to my team, but now it’s worse than just making a unit because you can just make a high level unit and set their stats how you want whenever you want. All of the little optional things that took time and effort but felt rewarding where streamlined to be made easier and then made mandatory parts of the gameplay pretty much because they expected you to use them, so instead of feeling like cool optional mechanics it felt more like bloat where they could have just cut those systems and made the enemies weaker and made the game simpler without having to engage with these mechanics that artificially bloat the numbers without actually impacting the gameplay loop. I know a lot of people were fine with it, but it muddled the whole experience for me. I like having optional content that gives me an edge when I engage with it, but the newer Disgaea games take all of the optional stuff from the previous games, make them 10x easier to get the benefit out of them with none of the work and then design the difficulty around it so that your expected to engage with it. This could only happen with a sequel. These mechanics are only here because they served a meaningful purpose in previous games, but now they’re just a weird trivial mess of convoluted mechanics that only serve to make the numbers bigger than they need to be.
@@christianboi7690 To be fair, Innocents were always required for every Disgaea post-game you just had to grind for them. They literally added a duping mechanic in 3 and 4 to make getting innocents super fast, as well, so is it really that big of a deal that they streamlined it in 5?
Personally, I don't think there's a single mechanic you have to use in order to beat a Disgaea game. If you want you can literally just raise enemy levels on the first map and get to level 100 at the start of the game in two seconds, then steamroll it. Or just be comfortably overleveled enough where you can just attack enemies normally to beat each map. Disgaea has always been like that. Do you have any examples of mechanics that you feel that way with?
Honestly, I thought 7 was the best Disgaea game since 4 so I'm very happy with the current direction of the series! I'd recommend just trying not to nitpick and enjoy the games for what they are, rather than being upset over small changes.
@@Jordan3DS Disgaea 1 Ive beaten several times base and post game without even knowing about the statician mechanic. I’m fact, once I beat Baal by capturing a bunch of powerful monster units that were stronger than my main unit, by buffing him and sending him into the base panel and then doing that with the new monster unit over and over. There where a lot of options and you didn’t even have to grind that much if you knew what you where doing. I didn’t even know what innocents were when I first played it as a kid, but I beat all the post-game content.
Disgaea 2 didn’t even have staticians and the base game was manageable even without grinding felonies.
Disgaea 3 and D2 were kind of meh, in my opinion. I didn’t really get into the post-game that much, I don’t think item duping was intentional at all in Disgaea 4. Before the unique abilities were added in later versions it was so hard to set up item duping and after they were it still seemed like an unintentional side effect. The post game in 4 was a little annoying, but I still love 4 for all the unique and interesting mechanics they added, without sullying old mechanics that much.
I don’t think I was that nit-picking while playing. I didn’t even know why I wasn’t having fun when I was playing through 5. It just felt off to me. It took a lot of introspection and thought to get to those core ideas I talked about earlier. I actually played through Disgaea 5 with all the post-game content again recently to try and see if I missed something or was just playing it wrong, but I really couldn’t get into it like the older games. I don’t consider myself particularly nit-picky. I’m glad that you enjoyed it and the later titles, I just couldn’t and I didn’t have to pick the game apart to feel that way.
The core of the game has always been to attack enemy units and level. There’s depth in how you do that, but what I want from that game is for it to be barely manageable with just that and then all the extra mechanics are there to make if easier once you get the hang of them. I don’t really like having the cheat shop available before post-game in 5 because of that aspect, I get caught up grinding sometimes and it’s so easy to find a good place to grind, level the enemies there and keep doing that until the next few chapters fly by in a matter of minutes. I’ve heard people say to just play those maps at the elevated level too, but that makes the grinding feel meaningless because I’m not letting it make the combat easier like the original intention of the grinding was. It broke the loop for me. I’m flawed, you can’t expect me to play the game in the way that would be the most fun, I just have to use the tools given to me to become as powerful as possible and all throughout 5 I was either overpowered or underpowered compared to the enemies. The older games weren’t like that. They actually had really good progression. It wasn’t one shot or be one shot the whole time.
Like I said before, I’m glad you like the direction of the series right now. I guess, I just have specific tastes that aren’t being catered to with them. There are so many new tools in the later games, but I feel more limited than ever with how I approach the late game, because of how you can share evilities and the only thing unique about any units anymore are their abilities and only like 3 of them have unique abilities that are worth anything. Okay, I’m ranting too much. Sorry, that’s an issue of mine.

Personally I love Disgaea 3, I just finished 100%ing it for the first time a few months ago. Item duping was 100% intended in 3 and 4, that's why they included the Puppy Paw Stick and Character World enemy copies of your units. They added it because running the item world a dozen times to get all of the equipment you need is a chore, it's easier to just get one item maxed out then be able to give it to everyone.
For me, I just try to play the games without getting OP. In regards to the cheat shop, you were able to raise the enemy levels from the beginning of the game ever since Disgaea 1. The problem of being able to become super overleveled has been a problem in every game in the series, so I've just always played the games straight and only done some grinding if I get stuck on a map. I also always ignore innocents and the item world until the post-game, too.
I'm with you on being kind of eh on 5, but for a different reason. For me, I love the music, character designs, map design, and stories in Disgaea, and 1-4 all nailed those aspects while 5 stumbled more. They didn't really have any clever geo panel maps and the story and characters are much weaker than the past games. The OST is phenomenal, at least! I'm also not a fan of how the item world is infinite and you have to play board games for hours to max out each character.
Also, Disgaea has had the one shot design ever since 2. Disgaea 1 had a different damage calculation where both you and the enemy took more hits to kill, while from 2 onward attacks do way more damage on both sides. That's just kind of how the series is at this point. They also fixed the EXP curve, too, where you get levels way faster from 2 onward which is great.
What would you personally want in a future Disgaea game? I think one thing we can both agree on is that 6 sucks, lol. Also, no worries about the ranting, I'm totally cool with people doing a deep dive into their opinion as long as things don't devolve into petty insults.
All these people hyped for this and I have never even heard of this game. Then again I never heard of anything Nippon Ichi until I discovered Disgaea through Disgaea 5 being pretty similar in tone to Persona 5.
I am a huge fan of Phantom Brave and I first played it on the PSP back in middle school more than 10 years ago. I was so obsessed with the game to the point that I beat it 5 times. Upon knowing there will be a sequel really made my day today. IMO its better than any of the disgaea games.
