Sean Penn was on Conan a few years back. Penn ran into the guy from his high school that he based the Spicoli character on. Turns out the dude ended up doing well for himself. Has a family, still living in Los Angeles, and still surfing but now with his kids. The clip is on TH-cam.

When I watched this movie when it came out, I actually told my friend that Spicoli was some stoner they had play himself, and he'd never be in any other movie except for Cheech and Chong. I could not believe it when I saw Sean Penn play a completely different role.

I have never wanted to be on a Rewatchables panel more than for this movie - I graduated from high school in California in 1982, and this movie really captures what it was like for me and my peers. I swear, I knew and hung around with all these kids (I myself was a less-cool version of Rat). It was completely true that everyone had a job and you always had to go hang out somewhere. And to hang anyplace, you needed money. And of course, you HAD to have a car. In my hometown, on weekend nights, kids cruised - drove up and down the same street for hours. The goals were to find out where there was a party, and hopefully meet girls. Had to do it that way - no cell phones!

From Vulture “An unknown 17-year-old from Beverly Hills High, Cage received only a bit part in the film after losing the Brad Hamilton role, for which he had auditioned multiple times, to the older Reinhold.”

Side 1. This has always bothered me. I'm sure Crowe and Heckerling would have known this detail. So either it was a licensing issue (the prevailing theory on the 'net) or a creative choice to show that Rat wasn't paying attention.

@8584zender Crowe has talked about it several times. Back then, Led Zeppelin did not license their music to anyone, ever. Because Crowe knew the band, he was able to appeal to them personally. As a favor, they granted him one song and one song only.
Just as a example of how stingy the band was with licensing. In 1993 Richard Linklater arranged a private screening of 'Dazed and Confused ' for the band and they still turned him down.

If memory serves, Doug had a lot to with her being more mature than her peers, or at least thinking she was because she had left all the stuff she considered immature - like drugs - behind.

Some more evidence Spicoli was a genius. I just realized it this morning.
As Mr. Vargas' class is entering the morgue for a field trip, he stops Spicoli and asks, "Hey, are you in my class?" Spicoli responds, "I am today."
Jeff Spicoli, stoner, burnout, and surfer dude, could be in any of a bunch of places since he is obviously cutting another class. He's also not going to get credit for attending Vargas' class. Why not just cut school totally? He could go surfing, he could hang out and smoke in the VW bus with Eric Stoltz and Anthony Edwards, he could be buying Tasty Waves, he could be cruising in the VW bus, or any of a multitude of things. But what does he choose to do? He CHOOSES to attend a biology class that he's not even registered for so he can gain more real world knowledge of the human body.
That, my friends, is a man thirsting for knowledge.

  • @JalenRawley
    @JalenRawley 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

I was born in 1974, graduated in 1992, and Fast Times felt like what high school in the late 70s/early 80s must have felt like, because my experience was -not- like that at all. Granted, I grew up outside of Chicago and this is based in California. For example I just thought Spicoli was just kind of a dumb guy. We didn't have stoners like that. Weed was hard to get, in fact in junior high a friend and I made up a batch of fake weed with a bunch of spices and stuff, and burned bay leaves because it kind of smelled like weed. It was far too light colored though, so we put wet coffee grounds and soy sauce in it, and I hung out of my bedroom window with a hair dryer and a colander trying to get it to dry. Sold it for $20. We did the driving around thing though. We would hit the highway and get off at an exit we've never gotten off at before and just find our way back on the side roads listening to music and talking.
As for where were the parents, almost all of my friends were from single parent families or were just one step away from it. A stay at home parent was the rarest thing ever, and most of the time they were occupied with younger kids while we were pretty much free to go wherever we wanted. Our thing was all about getting around town on bikes before any of us could drive, and we were all poor so if anyone did eventually get a car it was some land yacht from the 70s that was on its last leg. My first car was a 1980 Chevette that had a University of Anchorage sticker in the window... you KNOW nobody shipped that hunk of shit from Alaska to Chicago. All of the oil leaked out of it and the engine seized trying to go over an overpass. My second car was a 1974 Mustang that we called the Rustang. They both lasted about a year each. Then a 1983 Nissan Sentry with 250,000 miles on it that I bought for $200 had the water pump die on it after I had it about four months and blew the engine, then a 1979 Chevy Impala that I bought for $100 and put $400 of repairs into. Just total shitboxes.
Drugs were rare, getting laid was rare and everyone who was able to hook up spent 100% of their time with the girl from then on, so they were never around. It was Miller Genuine Draft, shitbox cars, classic rock and early thrash metal and shopping mall four courts. We missed out on the Dazed and Confused/Fast Times/Sixteen Candles/Breakfast Club shit. We were the malaise between stoney classic rock and cool hip hop and it flat out sucked.

Gen X here. I'm not defending Ron who yeah, total loser, but back in the day, 16 year olds worked, had their own cars, and pre-HIV f&cked like bunnies in their teens. We essentially lived like adults that couldn't legally drink but didn't care. I dated 20 year olds when I was 15 or 16 and it was not abnormal. Our parents often had left school at 16 to start their adult lives, so no, we were not infantalized until we were 21. We were considered young adults, not children. For better or worse.

That was an active choice by Heckerling - she wanted to remind us that these were not adults, bur kids trying to BE adults, with all the missteps and discomfort that involved. She said something like, "I wanted them to be naked, not nude."

59:55 I disagree that the Linda/Stacy relationship has aged the worst. Linda is clearly fronting - she’s inexperienced and trying to impress Stacy. Hence the bad bj advice.

Isn’t it possible that the reason that Linda’s “relationship advice” is so bad is because it’s all bullshit to begin with? She’s just as inexperienced as Stacey, but, doesn’t want her to know. There’s even one moment where it DOES seem like Stacey is on to her nonsense.
