first off thats pretty much how les baer fits his slides and frames, so eat it urban. secondly frame to slide fit acounts for about 5% of your accuracy. its all about lock up.
when you first start lapping, there are usually a couple of really tight spots. it is just prudent (makes life easier) to us one. Later on it is not needed. When you get into finer grits, it should be all by hand.....the really tight spots are gone, or you moved too quickly into the finer grits if you have to beat on the slide to move it.
What's up with that frame? Is the rest of it aluminum and bolts on later? Thanks for the video, every behind the scenes video at Wilson or Baer shows the same process.
@@jonathanharpe4333 if you are starting from scratch and fabricating the frame and slide mill the mating surfaces to be loose fitting by .002, then using a peening blocks peen down the frame rails .0005 at a time until the desired fit is achieved. Even though he is using a dead blow hammer in the vid I can’t bring myself to beat on a slide like that. I can usually achieve a nice tight(however still smooth functioning) fit in about 3-4 minutes. If not milling the frame from scratch the same process applies just more measuring will need to be done. Hit me up when you start you’re build and I’d more than happy to do a video call with you from my shop and we can go over the process together
@@jonathanharpe4333 I’m sorry let me clarify something, I’m not saying the gentleman in the video is doing this the wrong way because there isn’t a wrong way. Whatever works best for you is perfectly ok, I just have a different way and I always look for the method that requires the least amount of work and time because I do this for a living and time is literally money for me.
@@mikewebster2761 O cool thank you for the advice. I will get in touch with you once all my parts and tools come in. Also I made a mistake my build will be a 2011 on a Cheely Frame if that changes anything. I don’t think. It’s pretty much finished drilled and everything. I just want to get the best fit I can. Just let me know how to get in touch with you for later. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Les is not the pinnacle of 1911 builds Today. Machine the rails after measuring the frame and slide. Then stone any high spots. The problem with lapping compound Is that it will lap areas you don't want changed. Your gun though so do it as you like
right about 7:15 I was waiting for the "OUCH,,,,DAMN IT!"
tight and sweet!

Pó fiquei cansado só em vê, muito bom um excelente profissional meus parabéns.
How long does it take? Ive been working mine back and forth for 2 days. Noticed that once I started doing it by hand, it seemed to go a little faster.

good!
how did you cut your rails?
im sorrry i am new to this. but did you mill that slide and frame yourself??? if you did. WOW.
This is the way
that seems like such a pain in the ass but i bet you that is one helluva precise repeater
which size blade for line plz

The grip is plastic, aluminum or steel, you choose. It's based on the STI/SVI modular 2011.

What lapping compound were you using?
Those are Brownells containers. I use the same lapping compound
Great video... too many arm chair gunsmith leaving bogus comments
Is this really the way to go? It's seems like he is bending the slots on the slide as opposed to removing material.

Tem como fazer um pra mim da pt 92
So that's how you do it. I have a really cheap Chinese 1911 and the slide feels like it has sand in it. I will try this method to clean it up.
Thanks
Can't you just file it? Seams like it would be easier, I wouldn't like to beat on my firearm like that. But, if it works.
That's a rubber mallet on stainless steel, it won't hurt the frame.
Its steel vs plastic.....something tells me steel is going to have a flawless victory if anything happened.
This was pretty painful to watch. There are easier and more precise ways to get a perfect slide fit
What ways do you use ? Asking because I’m going to tackle my first 1911

Peening is Old school and doesn't last due to the small amount of frame rail actually contacting the slide..
That was painful to watch. A mallet has no place in fitting a slide. Ask les or bill if they use a mallet .
urbanmerc1 Wrong. Les Baers guys use mallets to fit their slides to the frames. I've seen a video of it.

Most companies/people use mallets bro
