Episode 7
In this episode we hear an uncanny story about Tally Ho's competitor in the 1927 Fastnet Race, and a plea to help trace this lost historic soul.

Finally confident enough to complete the set up of the wind turbine, install the lighting and give it all a test.
Then with the help of a friend Miles here in the boatyard, we run all the mains wiring for my combi machine.

I crewed on La Goleta for 10 years with Doddy (Peter Dodd) and it was great to see him again even on film. I would be very interested to know what happened to this lovely schooner and all the crew. I even have a photograph of her under full sail on my office wall. We did the Fastnet on her when she was 48 years old and knocked a day off her original time! Also on board during that time were Tim and Linda Reeve whom I am in occasional touch with. As Doddy said in the video, it would be great for the crew to meet up again. The last time we met up was some years ago at Tim and Linda's house in Wiltshire (I think).
My uncle bought La Goleta sometime after WW2 and sailed her round the Western Isles. I don’t know how long he owned her but I think he sold her in the 1960s.
Man it is definitely a small world, think of all the things that came into play to bring you to this point. You have some free time and see a video about a brit building a British boat half a world away. You go help this guy, hone some woodworking skills, and fall in love with wooden boats. Return home, find a boat TWO hours from home and you get hired by a guy who used to sail on the only other boat to finish the race the previous boat won almost 100 years ago. Haha that's kismet. I liked watching you on Sampson Boat Co. and was glad to see you caught the bug. Great show keep it up! At least I think that's how it happened.

Mark Hazel I cannot agree with you more!!! I too have Tinnitus /industrial deafness as it now also commonly referred to.. it’s something i see so often with people old enough to know, and do much better. How can we get it through to anyone using ANY loud machinery to do - buy AND wear earplugs or earmuffs.. even mowing the lawn!! Once your hearing is impaired, it dramatically changes how you live and your quality of life. SPREAD THE WORD!!
One of those lessons I learned too late and of course it irreversible. As an old dude social interactions are limited by hearing loss. Loud sudden noises, like hammering on steel are particularly damaging. Even exposure to sound 120 decibels or less for prolonged periods are damaging. Do yourself a big favor and always protect yourself. Cheers, Will

Hi Finn, love the lockdown hair. I am sure you have removed them now, but for rusted bolts/screws in wood, heat is your friend. Several people said about welding a bar on. But I did not see anyone say to use the welder to heat the studding. Just keep pilling on the weld and the heat will change the rust from red to black which makes it shrink. Part of the reason rust makes bolts stick is that rust takes up more space than iron, so it jams it all tight. Also, the heat chars the wood too. For stuck screws, I use a pencil blow torch, and just heat the head.

Looks like you have access to a wealth of great knowledge, experience. Loved hearing Pete's story. All the luck in the world finding the La Goleta. Just an idea to make your channel stand out. I spent all my working life boatbuilding and fishing out of Lymington and remember passing La Goleta when she was at the Berthon.Let's hope we can find out what happened to her. Thanks for another great film Fin, my 10p's worth I would chop of the end of that knee to get the stud out.

Time is precious, if you aren't keeping them just chop them next to the bolt and be done with it, you can still use the pieces for templating.

Hello Finn! Just was watching you helping out Leo on Tally Ho. Now here you are working on your own boat! Best of luck to you! I was thinking on those stuck knees on the stern seeing as your gonna remake them just split them in half to get them off. Then glue and clamp them back together then you would have a pattern to make the new ones. Cheers, carry on!

A good watch, Finn. Thank you. You are obviously a knowledgeable bloke , so you probably already considered and discarded this idea, but FWIW ....... We used to weld some round bar onto the fastening and extract it with a slide hammer. ( We had different sizes of slide hammer - the surveyor always wanted the most awkward fastenings pulled !)

Hello Finn. I'll just tell you why I subscribed to your channel.
I saw you clam up in your early vids and was impressed with your determination to beat it. I thought this bloke is SERIOUS. I rarely sub on you tube, I save that for the real men/women.
So, I immediately subscribed. I respect a man who can show his emotions and carry on with what needs doing.
I'm an Aussie Pensioner so money is tight and I cannot help you that way but like you I'll think of something.
Spreading your channel on other people might help a little.

BTW....I've been a Tally Ho fan from seeing the fear in Leo's face when he looked at the boat first time.

excellent - i'm really looking forward to this project Finn - i been binge watching Leo's Tally Hoo project last two days (all 70 odd vids) and now looking forward to yours, with your talent and skills (noted with your work on Tally Hoo) i'm sure your going to do this boat much justice (is the hull fibreglass, i not seen written anywhere, just a very smooth finish) doesn't look that pretty inside, i'd love to come n help out, i heard you say Hasting eeek my neck of the woods although i'm down west sussex now, seem to have loads of time on the hands, might like to come n play while i have time on my hands - keep at it fella

Suggestion for removing the bolts - use a hole saw to remove the wood surrounding the bolts to reduce the contact with the knee. Interesting story about La Goleta. Keep going!

Hi Finn, that's quite the pickle you have with the seized bolts, I wish I had an intelligent suggestion. I really like the gaffs at the end of the videos. If I were making videos they would be nothing but gaffs, hat's off to you. : )

Find a hole saw about the same size as the square mortise for the upper nuts. Using the hole saw without the pilot center drill installed, drill down to the deck line around the outside of the threaded rod. The knees will come off easily. Then the threaded rods will be exposed for removal. The now oversized holes in the knees can be filled with appropriately sized dowel and glue.
When fastenings are that seized sometimes there is no other option other than to cut the wood away from the fastenings. Desiree's solution above may work, or just hack them off - you wont use them again anyway. Expedience over elegance!!

Nuts and Boats Sailing So what was your idea?
@@christiangeiselmann induction heater wold make the bolt red hot in minutes, this burns a thin layer of wood around the bolt and creates some " wiggle room " for the coroded steel and crud to move about. Ofcourse you need to have a person topside with some water to put out fires and you would need to have spreadable water ready under the deck as well. I haven't tried this on bolts in wooden constructions but i think it would work.
I understand that this is a high risk solution but I have worked with induction heaters a lot and I'm pretty sure it would work. I also think the damage to the wood would be minimal if the fire is kept under control.... (I'm "nuts" maybe it's best not to listen to me)
So i saw the video and the first thing I thought of was the induction heater solution, i went to the comment section ready to start writing, then i saw this comment,,,, and i was really ashamed of my self. The other solution was easy, cheap tools, safe and no big fire risk. That should have been the first thing I thought of.

👍👌👏 Nice video and work progress again. Unfortunately there is nearly always higher effort as calculated in restorations. Always some unpleasant surprises.
2) How great it would be to find La Goleta. Imagine how your nice boss would feel if he could sail (on) her again after 50 years! Maybe even side by side with Tally Ho!? Remember: Tally Ho will be ready in 2 years! 😁😁
Therefore I suggest to give these informations to Leo and the Arabella guys. Don't get me wrong but they have a lot more viewers (at least for now. Maybe you will catch up). If both channels mention the search in their videos, the chances finding La Goleta are way bigger I guess.

A few ideas come to mind. You did say you were replacing them? 16 mm bolt - maybe weld a nut on topside or drill a hole through if there’s enough thread poking out, then use an old screwdriver/rod as a “handle” to turn the bolt. And perhaps a well of WD- 40 around the bolt and let it soak for a day or two... Or drill a series of holes around the bolt and dig out enough of the timber to loosen its grip but not break the piece in two ( pencil a cross on first to keep hole location accurate)... That saw combo looks like a good unit. Enjoyed the video - keep em coming. : )

Oh the joys of a busy workshop....there is always someone "enhancing" the audio!
Shame the original builders cut so many corners with materials...you now have to pay the price which makes the job take twice as long..

I guess some of the people here which gave you ideas how to get rid of the knees/rusted bolts forgot that your boat is made from concret. So be careful not to stress punctual to much .Concret is very strong but not elastic and it can crack.

Yeah welding onto the top is probably the easiest way to do it!
Why? Were you not listening when he said he was replacing the knees with new ones? Cut the old ones off.......5 minutes work. Cut the seized threaded rods off......2 minutes work. Make new knees......that will make slightly more interesting footage.
ok so im following this from TALLY HO, and having watched all the vids realising your from hastings area, and your family is from BATTLE, strangely im watching from my home nr POWDERMILL wood, good show so far, keep it up Finn.
Slide hammer mate. You can make your own. The impact can crack the rust laminations.

G'day Finn my sugestion for the threaded rod is weld the top nuts to the threaded bar then use an impact wrench to try and screw them out.

As for the difficult nuts I'd attempt making a long attachment for the Spanner. You have the right nuts to get the right setting to the spanner or a Ring spanner might be better. An easy fix if you're lucky.
Chisel enough wood away around the studs at the top of the knees to allow use of a fender washer. Replace the nuts, and then use a pneumatic impact driver to tighten down on the nuts. Since you removed the nuts below, the studs should work their way upwards and out initially until they loosen up enough to spin - in which case you should then be able to work them up and out with a fair amount of ease.

Around 1979 La Goleta was sold and made her way down to I believe Belize. Though there are stories that she ended up on the rocks somewhere in the Caribbean.

Finn, nice story tie in with the Tally Ho. That is a great machine you have there, I saw another one on a UK video, but have never seen anything like that here in the States. When ever I see a table saw with no riving knife attached I wince , any chance they make an attach. ?

if the bolts are off the inside, take a piece of sheetmetal to protect the deck and try gentle knocking a wide wedge in between the deck and the knee. My two cents.
Thanks for the video👍🏻 can you weld? If so is their enough room to weld onto the top of the 16mm stud? If so you could weld a T shape on top and get to jacks and try and move it that way🤔 hard to say from the video. As said if not make a template and cut. If you don't want to cut the threaded rods, use a length of steel tube just larger than the rods, file teeth on one end to form a "core" drill. Then drill a hole which removes the rods. Then replace with larger diameter rods. Good luck!
..Hydraulic jack in-between the knees pushing out, w/ a strap come-along on the uppermost part of the two knees to compliment the jack's outward movement.
