    EPISODE 48 (Pt2).
This week we continue with the 2nd part of the Royal Ocean Racing Club presentation. This part of the talk focuses more on my own story before I began working on Tally Ho - from spending my late teens travelling abroad and busking on the street, to my first sailing and boatbuilding experiences, and my journey in a 1947 Folkboat from Cornwall across the Atlantic to the Caribbean.

Hi Leo. I don't know if you will ever read this as I do realize this video is a few years old, but I am going to write to you, nevertheless. I have been watching quite a few of your videos and I have come to greatly admire you and your abilities. It is very rare to find this level of commitment in someone so young. Leo’s comment about all the support is interesting. I like probably everyone thought it was a big job to take on, but totally underestimated just how big! And clearly so did Leo, even with his experience. Looks to me like it was more an emotional decision rather than a rational one as we are all very good at rationalising to ourselves an emotionally based decision already made!
As he said in the closing of the video he thought he’d be able to manage it ( both financially and practically no doubt ) until he got into it.
I’d suggest his greatest achievement to date, with some good fortune, is turning that potentially bad decision into a good one. Where others would have floundered and failed he’s turned it into a huge success. Well done!

Leo.... Yes, I do believe that the rebuild of Tally Ho does not make much sense. But, I'm so grateful for you doing it the way you are, because I get to come along with you while you are doing it. Wooden boats and sailing are something that would not have been a part of my life had it not been for you. I am so much enjoying following along with you as you undertake this great adventure. It is the kind of thing I would not even imagined in my own life, but to see you and all those you are encountering along the way is broadening my horizons tremendously. Of course, I'm doing it in the comfort of my nice warm and cozy little home while you are braving the hardships of all the hard work you are doing, but I'm having a great time watching. I'm so impressed, thank you for making you adventure available to those of us who are only able to experience it vicariously.

Leo, at 26:00 you explain about how a well-maintained wooden boat will over time lose all of its original wood, yet still be the same boat. I agree with my whole heart. You are speaking to the Royal Ocean Racing Club, founded in 1925. You state that this is the SAME club that was founded to run the initial You and everyone in that room seems to think this is true, BUT not one person who founded that club is still alive, so this is NOT the SAME Royal Ocean Racing Club, which is a ridiculous statement, because it IS the same. So why it is different for a wooden boat? The Exact Same Continuity is there in a wooden boat, and in a club: parts get old and die, and are replaced by new parts, and the same boat or club continues.

I have now learned that keeping 20 board feet of an old transom and replacing the rest of the boat, qualifies as "restoring" a vessel, not building "new". Reminds me of the old car story of removing radiator cap, replace everything under it. It IS an amazing project and great fun to watch along.. Learning a lot with every video.... Sorry I am not able to financially contribute, but I do join with many others in the same situation in sending our best wishes and highest hopes.

I retire in two months at the age of 68yrs. My Wife and I have travelled through Northern Europe for many years, firstly on an 1100cc Motorbike, learning to travel light, starting off with all the wrong gear, learning as we went. No help from anyone, just us and the road. We did that for 17 years then as the bones got stiffer we transferred to a two seat roadster and followed the same learning process but with a few more creature comforts. Last year while loading up the car again one morning of our tour of the NC500 in the Scottish Highlands, I thought, 'I've done this for so long now it is getting too samey' I need another challenge. So we are selling everything and buying a boat. I sailed as a kid, served two years aboard a merchant ship in my teens and raced power boats as a 30 something married man.
I cant afford a Gin Palace (and would not want one) but as a former construction company owner I can do stuff, so we are setting off on a new adventure. Watching you rebuild Tally Ho is inspirational, I cannot hope to do the quality of workmanship you and your team do but Im looking forward to giving it a bloody good go. Thanks for inspiring so many.

Indeed -- and I for one think that having him speak to real people in a real room is far more effective (on this YT format) than speaking "to camera". But the classy splicing in of high quality graphics, including animations of sailing routes, means that we have the ability to pore over the fantastic images in our own time, which helps compensate for missing out on the undoubted benefits of seeing a person tell their story in the flesh ... so to speak.

Is it the same boat? Am I the same person I was two years ago? Eating and drinking and breathing and cellular turnover have changed a huge proportion of my atoms, but my DNA sequence and my outward appearance are the same (mostly😊). The importance is the continuity. And you taking the old pieces out by hand, and putting in the new pieces by hand maintain that continuity. It keeps the intangible, the idea of the boat intact. In our current throw away culture, that is rare and worth celebrating. Keep up the good and inspiring work!

If you want to build a ship, do not gather your men and women to give them orders, to explain every detail, to tell them where to find everything ... If you want to build a ship, do arise in the heart of your men and women to desire the sea.
I take my captain's hat off for you!

Ohhhh Leo..you were paid for your work, paid so much more than money. You were paid with knowledge. You can amass a great deal of knowledge and it never burdens you with its weight whereas gold you can only carry a small bit before you become exhausted. I'd say you were rewarded far better than with money.

I will probably never sail a boat. The research you have done into the history of Tally Ho and attention to detail is so interesting. As someone that is unqualified to comment on boats, ships or sailing in general it's the same boat if the only thing that survives the restoration is the name. Tally Ho the Next Generation!!

We can order most, or all the new replacement parts for a completely wrecked 57 Chevy and put them together. What have we done, built a replica, or restored a 57 Chevy? We restored the car. As long as we have a few important, identifiable bits the car lives on. This is what Leo is doing, restoring the Tally Ho. Sail on young man!

Humans and other animals are also examples of this. As in the case of the _(don't mention the ship of Theseus!)_ famous axe of Captain Cook ("two new heads and five new handles") all of our component cells die many times over, if we live to adulthood. Even old scars eventually consist entirely of new cells (unfortunately, mostly they are replaced "like with like"!). So it's not old cells which make us old eventually, it's broken-down repair mechanisms which direct how to replace those cells, and degraded "builder's drawings", which get read wrongly as time goes on ... My poor layman's analogy, for which no-one else is to blame.

I'm so glad you included these two episodes. As a boy I dreamt of doing what you are doing and the background story was as interesting if not more interesting to me than Tally Ho's. When I was a young boy I once tried to volunteer aboard a tall ship that visited Melbourne. I got turned away and I gave up. The difference between you and I is that when I was dreaming, you were doing. What a great story. So humble but justifiably proud of yourself. Well done Leo.

I've never really been inspired by boats and sailing. My only boat-build was a kayak, in the 1950's from a design in a French paperback of 1944, (I couldnt read French so just worked from the diagrams) and the materials were mostly off-cuts scrounged from building sites, ( a lot of those in England after the war) plus screws and canvas, my dad scrounged from his works, a ships chandler in London. It cost me about 5 Quid (£) to build, and I sold it about 5 years later to my Local Scout troop, for 5 Quid!
I canoed down the Thames from Oxford to Putney, over a week, with a mate with a near identical kayak, from the same plans, camping on the way. My dad took us to Oxford with the company's van, with a mattress on the roof and the canoes tied on, with rope through the open windows.
The tent was made from old WW2 camouflaged Parachutes, and one night after pitching the tent in a field, we returned from the pub (we were under age) at around dusk, we couldnt find it! Luckily I'd left a dixy lid with butter in, outside the tent, and that eventually led us to it. Another night I found I'd parked the canoe over an underground wasps nest, and got badly stung on returning from shopping for evening food.
    After that, it was motorcycles!
I restored some, improved some, and built my own from bits, but never went back to boats.
(I'm not a good swimmer, but I have no trouble walking, should the need arise;-)

'Quite'? Wow, that's harsh! Talk about damning with faint praise. I know a lot of TH-cam viewers are American... but in British English at least, using the word 'quite' to describe something admirable is the same as calling it garbage. Beethoven was... quite a good composer. What? The qualifier 'quite' makes him sound distinctly 'meh'; omitting the 'quite' makes things unambivalent.
Altering your Comment to 'What an inspiring story..." would get closer to what many of us feel about Leo's journey. Oh, and I apologise unreservedly for Commenting on your Comment. It was... quite rude of me. :-)

    • @brokerhc
      @brokerhc 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@EleanorPeterson In British English quite good only means pretty good or fairly good, but in American English it's much more positive. Quite good means very good, so you can give yourself a pat on the back. Since my English is from South Florida, I meant that Leo's story is one of the most impressive stories I have watched in videos. Maybe I could say: "keep your sticky beak out of it!" but that is British English and it would be rude so, like we say in Miami: "Vaya a una larga caminata en un muelle pequeño". Or "Take a long walk on a short pier."
