@Adam LZ - Just a suggestion (and I have zero clue if this is applicable to an R34) but when I used to track/race Miatas years ago - we had the same issue , and the problem was the drivetrain (engine/trans) under partial and heavy load tilts to one side and therefore changes the perceived location of the gates. We solved this by either stiff engine/trans mounts or heavy duty engine dampeners (I actually built mine out of a club car golf cart hydraulic shock.) One I did this - I never went 2nd-5th again. Like I said - no clue of this happens on an R34 , but you never know.
Adam, you definitely wanna upgrade your transmission mounts etc, and it will grab gears so much better, it’s most likely due to flexing that it’s shooting from 3rd to 5th or 4th to 6th as well as synchros or whatever🤝

It's about how you're holding the shifter. Watch those Hot Version videos of Keichi ripping those cars. If you try to pistol grip it with your left hand you're much more likely to miss a gear. They like a thumb down backhand pulling type motion for the 1-2, 3-4 and 5-6 shifts. And a thumb up pushing forward with your palm type motion for the 2-3 and 4-5 shift.
I’ve naturally gone to using this method I guess u can call it, and it feels very natural once ur used to it and I never seem to lose grip of the shifter
I think a lot of Nissans from this era like that shift method , it’s interesting I’ve never seen someone else mention that way before . I’ve had a six speed maxima , six speed Sentra SER , and other Nissans of the junk category and they seem to have very long throw gearboxes that require adjustments to shift quickly

Yea the mounts can cause havoc with that. Also the engine mounts play a part in it too. I went to stock mounts with one solid engine mount it made a huge difference

Engine mounts to weak for the amount of torque given for shift between 2-3 and 4-5 which where the gearbox would flex and due to that flex its either doesnt receive gear or shift to the next gear further away on the twist. plus years back i learnt about aggressive throttle bleeps between shifts to spool up turbos avoid lag. but i know you yo know that already just my 5cent
11:50 I build a switch with a paperclip and a piece of metal which triggers at the bite point of the clutch. The setting is on "while active" and it works perfect. Though I'm sadly not driving a R34 but an old Honda Del Sol
It's the getrag trans with regards to the miss-gear selection. I have one in my cefiro and you have to know where the gears are and drive it in. Once you get it, its fine. Swapping between cars does you in.

I setup my flatshift using a pressure switch tee-d into the clutch line. I start the timer as soon as the pressure switch sees pressure. The pressure switch is a brake light switch from classic cars.
Upgrade all mounts, including and mounts that attach to the gearbox. Also a cae shifter will make 2nd to 3rd super easy, you might be able to modify a cae shifter to hide under the shifter sock or maybe get cae make a custom setup

Merry christmahannuhkwazicus, and happy hatch day to Collete. As others have said, stiffer mounts may be the solution to the shifting issue. I would suggest reworking your clutch switch. On my turbo e36 I have my switch active at roughly the bottom 1/4 of clutch pedal travel so there is no need to set a specific time window. This was how my tuner told me to set it up. If you flub a shift it doesn't pick revs back up until you come off the clutch. The timed cut is more for sequential gearboxes. You may be able to do this with your existing switch by adding a spacer between the switch and clutch pedal arm, I had to tinker a bit with exactly where in the travel it activated to get it just right.
Love the sound of your skyline wish mine sounded like that! and that 2nd stint when the camera is in the back just brings back the summer feeling of cruising around with my skyline lot can't wait for the weather to get better back here in the UK so i can get mine back out and just cruise around in it! tho defo need to make it sound like yours!
