- Understanding the genius of Gravity Falls and exactly what made it special is relatively easy. The best Gravity Falls episodes span mystery, puzzles and action and do all of it well. Disney may have created their best show and it lasted only two seasons. While there is no season 3, Dipper and Bill are still a topic of conversation in animation. Gravity Falls and all its weirdmageddon strangeness is one of modern animations best shows.

in the second episode, stan mentions how he spent his time fishing without the kids "talking to his reflection." stan was talking to his reflection, in a boat named the stan o' war (the name he and ford had given their boat when they were kids.) i don't think it's a stretch to say he was imagining himself hanging out on the boat with ford like they'd planned :(

It was a whole season.

Nomiconita Tyler didn’t look at the shirts in the first episode. He looked at them in Season 1, Episode 6, “Dipper vs. Manliness”. Tyler’s distracted by the shirts while the family goes out for breakfast.
It feels like Gravity Falls is just masquerading as a kids show and really it's just meant for adults. It's insane how good it is and how well it all fits together.

Alll it is is just expert writing, instead of all fart jokes. Its kinda sad that we think kids shows are not that good and dont have good writing and the good stuff is not for kids.
That's because a kids show isn't necessarily something only made for kids but rather all ages can enjoy. And funny enough there are a handful of adult movies having more sh*ttier writing than good kids movies.

On one hand I think its a bit far fetched, on the other hand I wouldn't put it past this show. A better example would be Soos constantly dropping hints that he wants to be Stan's adopted son, and at first we think its just him being weird as usual, but its only AFTER the second time travel episode that we suddedly go "oh"

I don’t think there’ll ever be another show like gravity falls, and I mean that in a good way. The show was so incredibly unique, complex, and entertaining all in one lovable, memorable package. An unforgettable experience in every sense of the phrase.

The owl house is pretty close but I still think gravity falls is better, Toh is better for lgbtq rep tho just because of the time difference of the two shows, I wish gravity falls got the chance to be great in that sense. Although Toh is pretty close to gravity falls.

Fun fact: Hirsch once said he had a plan for a 3 season show with the end of season 2 being the reveal of Ford but he cut it down because people had correctly figured out what it was and he didn’t want to drag it out if everyone knew already. That’s some dedication to avoiding filler.

He was also exhausted by the end too. In the commentaries on the DVD collection, he mentions how losing a fellow writer from the show pushed him past what felt he could do. He did want to end it concisely because of shows like the Simpsons, Spongebob, etc. but he also wanted to give the series what it deserved. That usually involved 24 hour work days at times.
So we could have gotten more gravity falls if people kept their mouths shut? :(

I convinced my mom to watch Gravity Falls, she watched the first episode with me. I was so happy. She laughed out loud, I saw her shocked expression when Norman turned out to be a bunch of gnomes, it was something that we could watch together, having fun. I just want to see the look on her face when she watches Not What He Seems!

Love that it didn't underestimated the mind of a kid. It shows some dark moments that kids understand. It wasn't afraid to cross the childish line in cartoons while not being an adult cartoon
I’d say the funniest jokes were the ones that played on cliché jokes. Kind of like the part of Double Dipper when Dipper says: “We’re not gonna turn on each other like in the movies, right?”

when i was younger and the finale was playing on disneyXD, my friend and i called each other on our shitty metroPCS phones and cried while it aired. it was sad to see it go but i’m overwhelmingly happy that it’s streaming on disney+. it’s like my childhood is happening over and over again and i really can visit gravity falls whenever i feel drawn to it again. the nostalgia is incomparable to other shows.
When Gravity Falls for came out, I was at that weird age where you reject everything that seems kidish. So, when I saw the trailers for each episode and the absurd humor was highlighted. I felt it wasn't for me. Well, years passed and a friend told me I'd probably love the show if I gave it a shot. So, last year I decided to binge it all with my new Disney + account and was amazed how good it was. Before, I wouldn't give it a second thought, and now it's possibly my favorite animated show of all time

I also love that Gravity Falls has such good characters that even the background characters have lovable personalities and quirks. By the end of the series you probably know almost every single person in that town if not all. You know what their work is, their name, if they have kids, it’s crazy how well it is made when it comes to characters to the point someone can show you a random background character of the show and you still would know their name.

In the episode “Dungeons, Dungeons, and more Dungeons,” the Pines family watch an episode of the TV show “Ducktective.” In the show, there is a plot twist where it is revealed that Ducktective had a twin brother. Soos says moments after the big reveal that he “predicted that like a year ago.” This is a reference to how some people predicted that Stan had a twin brother (Ford) before the show ever got around to revealing him.

That's actually how I got into the show. I fell down the rabbit hole of crazy conspiracy theories on TH-cam about this show I had never heard of before. They talked about the cyphers and all of the little clues that pointed to crazy things like a long lost twin brother and I thought if the show was that smart to put so many hints, foreshadowing and mystery in I needed to watch it and find out if it was all true
Not just that, Stan also comments that ducktective has a mystery theme and jokes that go over kids heads, just like gravity falls. I love all the fourth wall breaks in this show they are genius. Like in the second episode when soos asks the kids if they ever think about if they are side characters when he himself is one😂

Its similar to Diamond is Unbreakable in the sense that the way characters, scenes, and episodes are written make you feel like you were there and knew everyone as if it was real life. DiU and GF are the only shows I've seen capable of doing that and its always so cool

I personally think a way better example of this is in the body swap carpet episode. When Soos shows the twins and Stan the secret room he finds, in the background you can see Stan walk in and pick up a pair of old glasses that he holds on to for most of the episode. At first it doesn't really make that much sense since they just look like the glasses he wears until you realize upon a rewatch that they were Fords glasses and Stan likely sealed the wall up after he got lost in the portal. Throwing Stan in the background of that episode for a few seconds at a time looking at these glasses is a great yet subtle way of conveying how much he really misses Ford, but also how guilty he feels due to him covering up a part of the shack that had too many reminders of his brother for him to handle.
it’s so well thought out, the fact that so often something random will be explained in the next episode, blendin being in the background of the first few episodes, the random object that flew into the bottomless pit that turned out to be the door bill was looking for, it’s insanely clever

It's also insane that, when you think about it, stanley couldve been scamming people and making millions to fund the resources he needed to rebuild the portal. All of his character couldve been overplayed just so people had a reasonable explanation as to where all that money went, and we'll never even know. Thats the beauty of this show.
I once saw someone that thought Stan was so obsessed with money because when his father kicked him out he told him not to come back until he had a lot of money or something like that. I think it may be a combination of earning the money to eat, bring Ford back and that memory of his father.
I have a very deep fear of change. I've always hated it, even with the smallest of things. My friend once wore the same sweatshirt everyday for 8 months. One day he changed sweatshirts like it was a new day, and I cried like it was the end of the world.

Because, for them, the real form art is hyper realism, everything's fantasy seems to be like a lighthearted work for them. As an artist, I really find it absurd. Creating stories, creating characters from scratch and making them move is complex than copying a face or someone that currently exist in real life.

Fun fact, I was so obsessed with this show when I was younger that I started drawing just to create my own characters in this universe. I loved it so much that I wanted to become an animator and create a show of my own someday. Flash foward a few years and here i am, in art school. I dont want to work in animation anymore, but theres a huge likleyhood that I would not be pursuing my life passion without this show.

The sad thing about this is it’s such a good show that after you watch it’s entirety, other shows won’t feel as “quality” as this one.
Gravity Falls was incredibly ahead of it’s time. Everything was so perfectly laid out. From the writing, to the subtle easter eggs/references in the show that you have to rewind a couple times to catch. Everything was perfect. Even though at first glance, it looks like your average goofy kids cartoon, it very clearly was intended for an older audience that’s able to fully grasp and understand everything the show throws at you. This is the only show I’ve ever watched that managed to make me shed a few tears on multiple occasions. And the finale made me feel emotions I never even knew I had. Words can’t explain just how good this show is. It’s one of those shows that you have to see for yourself to understand the genius behind it
I was one of those people in the middle of figuring out the puzzles as the series released. It made the show so much fun to watch and go over every time a new episodes came out.
Oh man, I know that Gravity Falls is gonna go on to be a great show even for people who have just stumbled upon it and can watch it beginning to end without pause, but it's kinda sad that newcomers won't be able to experience all the puzzle solving and community driven treasure hunts - it was an insane and insanely FUN time that payed off

Bro I remember reading all the theories and people trying to piece it together it was amazing
I remember when “Not What He Seems” came out. My sister and I watched it together. We had spent since the beginning of the series theorizing and it blew us away. It felt rewarding every time one of our theories was proven correct.
It was so much fun to be a part of the community while the show was airing.

I'm glad he didn't because I just went back and watched the entire show after this video. When I originally watched the show on tv, disney would only air the same few episodes from season 1 on repeat, so I never really finished the storyline till now

My favorite part about shows like Avatar: The Last Airbender and Gravity Falls is they had a good overall story with a fun start that kinda goes more into story based. And the character development is good.

I was floored by how subtle the foreshadowing of the first episode’s “zombie” reveal. All of the setup felt so natural as just joke that you’re blindsided by something that was staring you in the face.

@@Bones97000 It's either when Dipper at one point accidentally flips to the gnome page in the journal, before flipping to the zombie page, or how the first episode of season 2 actually _did_ feature zombies.

Star DeStefano After setting up all the “zombie” clues (hand falls off, etc), Dipper shows Mabel the page in the book, but he accidentally opens it to Gnomes before catching his mistake and turning to the Zombies page. Seems like a harmless “ha ha dummy” joke but then it turns out the “zombies” actually are gnomes disguised as a human. Brilliant set up, imho.
The best is how it is played off as a punchline. "Guess what! It was gnomes!"

You barely remember it? Maybe it was overshadowed by the Stan twist right after
I remember when people theorized Dipper was going to have trust issues towards Stan and Mabel going forward but nothing really came of that.
Glad it went that way though because if it didn’t, it would’ve undermined the time they spent together in Season 1 and the explanation Stan gave in the following episode.

I just get so emotional whenever I hear or see anything related to Gravity Falls. It’s something I just love to watch more then anything else. It’s nice to feel something for once
I remember being in middle school and my friends and I would talk about the newest episode at breakfast. Everyone was throwing in their own ideas about the show and what the next episode may be. Gravity Falls really was an important part of my past, and we still love the show. Of course, we're all now busy because we're now all in high school, but I never quite left the Gravity Falls phase I think, same with most of my friends.
Crazy how a show where one of the main themes is never growing up or losing the kid in you makes you never grow out of it or lose its impact on you :,)

I recently just watched Gravity Falls since I’m stuck in quarantine. Honestly, I was just expecting it to be a typical funny kids’ cartoon, but holy shit I was pleasantly wrong. One of the best shows I have ever seen :)

Feels like you know everyone in town by the end of the series even though they weren't explored very deeply.

I was along for most of the gravity falls ride, and it was such an immersive experience that if you had asked me 15 minutes ago how many episodes the show was, I would probably have given a number closer to 80. The show really expanded out from the 22-minute episodes on screen to such an extent that even in the 4-month long waits in between individual episodes, it still felt like the show was running. Every week something new would be discovered, a new code would be cracked, some "leak" would appear that completely re-contextualized previous episodes. Gravity Falls wasn't a show, it was a once in a lifetime experience and a team effort.
Hands down the best animated series I have ever seen (in over three and a half decades of watching and enjoying animation), and one of the very best TV shows I have experienced, full stop. The only reason I am not constantly re-watching 'Gravity Falls' on a loop is the heartbreak of reaching that final episode; it still hurts to say goodbye every time.
When gravity falls ended there was a huge puzzle that went all over the world and eventually led to a giant statue of bill. It was a love letter to send off the show and it really shows how much care went into it.

gravity falls came out when I was around mabel and dipper's age and living in portland, OR. my brother and i loved the show, but only ever made it through the first season or so. a few weeks ago i found it again on disney +, and just finished it tonight and the finale made me cry. i am twenty years old why is this show making me cry??
The creator Alex Hirsch is from Piedmont, CA I believe. It probably cuts deeper in terms of believable characters and relatability.

My freshman year of high school, I randomly decided to give this show a shot.
I personally had never watched a lot of mainstream shows growing up, this being one of them. 2 of my friends loved this show to a fault and overhyped it before I knew what it was, so I didn't like it or watch it. They would always talk about how intense it was and funny and mysterious so I thought they were glorifying the show beyond what it was capable of.
I was clearly wrong
This show has so much to offer: comedy, mystery, interesting characters, character development, and silly poltline subtly exposing a much larger plotline, realities of life explained in simple characters, bonds between twins, and so much more. This show has everything and more and doesn't even age. Even though I only started liking it fairly recently, this show means a ton to me and I'm glad I came back all this time to give it a chance because it blew me away and changed me for good.

I watched Valskibum94 all the time when this was airing. The Cipher statue ARG that happened directly after the finale was such a great goodbye to the fans
@@samt3412 I rewatched the show a bit before the pandemic really took off and I immediately went on youtube after finishing it to look for valskibum's channel and see if the channel still had their old videos; they did.
I remember going to their channel every time an episode or promo aired to see his analysis on it and see the breakdown of all the hidden clues in the episode. It was through Val that I discovered the stanley theory and as a result was not all that shocked when it turned out to be true. It's nice to see that other people still remember his videos when thinking of gravity falls.

In the carpet diem episode where the twins are fighting over the room and switch minds. When they were upstairs with grenda and candy switching minds we see stan in the living room for a moment just holding and looking sad at a pair of glasses before hiding them away after hearing the kids scream.

I've rewatched this series quite a bit, and this is the first time I've ever heard someone point out such an intimate detail that hints at a much more solemn depth within this comedic setup.
That's why I feel like the best series are usually the ones with a very strong sense of plot, character, and layers that you can dig through every time you revisit it.
They're the ones always worth rewatching as you uncover hidden subtleties you didn't notice the first time, and they make it a real joy to watch for both old and new fans.
There’s something so suspenseful but also calming in the way that Gravity Falls is created and presented to the audience.
The show is so well written, even characters that only appeared once or twice are still memorable!

Gravity falls is not only absolutely incredible.
It is tangled in to much nostalgia for me personally. Nostalgia is such a tricky thing too, almost always making you question yourself if ya decide to take another viewing. But gravity falls? It's absolutely just as funny, tear wrenching and complex as you remembered.
I remember being in school coming home to the weekly and then later random episodes.
Watching it with my best friend and sobbing at the ending. Clutching each other because a series which we had absolutely fallen in love with was ending.
Going through growing up and the problems there, how a summer was never long enough. That was our whole lives too, it was relatable but so much more.
I can say gravity falls definitely means a lot to me, everyone should give it a chance.

I was skeptical when I watched the first episode. But as I continued watching my understanding and appreciation grew. The character arcs are realistic and heartfelt. The jokes aren’t random nor do they distract from the storyline. The foreshadowing and codes fit together into a perfect mystery that begs its viewer to journey on. I literally cried during the last few episodes due to the epic beauty that had been formed. Gravity Falls is an amazing show with sacrificial characters, epic storytelling, hilarious quotes and heart. Thank you Alex for your diligence in its formation.

I also love how Stanley is in reality the smart twin.
Just think about it: Without any special college education, he managed it to build an interdimensional portal to safe his brother with like a third of its original blueprint, while hiding it in his basement from the government for ~30 years. At the same time, he had a somewhat successful carreer (at least successful enough to finance all of this and a decent living).
And Stanford: Got stuck in a dessert for 30 years because he couldn't follow 1 basic english instruction (Do not sumon at all cost!).
Stanford was the one who _wrote_ that instruction after he made the mistake of summoning Bill. He couldn't have possibly known Bill was evil. He created the three journals afterwards and then got sucked into another dimension during his fight with Stanley.

Stanford is definitely academically smarter, but it would be shameful to say that Stanley is the dumb brother. Also, he was meant to shut it down, so why was it just ready to be turned on in the background? Did he not realize that he left the entire thing running in the background and that the flip of a switch could get someone sucked in?

Yeah, I read lots of comics as a kid, and saw the very first advertisement for it, I kept asking my mum to let me watch it, but I was too stupid to realize it hadn't been released yet.
It was worse when you were a kid with asian disney. Around the time I was discovering the internet I realized I was still in the first few episodes yet the entire season finished in the US.

The saddest part is every time I rewatch it I can’t help but cry at the end because I know that there will never be anymore episodes and that these characters that I know and love will never have another adventure I get to watch. Normally when I rewatch shows I have to skip through the boring episodes but I simply cant. All 40 episodes are worth rewatching and fill me with a happy feeling every time. Whenever I finish this show I feel like a part of me has left with it. I’ve rewatched it 7 times and fall in love with it every time. It’s honestly the best show you will ever see and anyone who says it’s bad doesn’t know what a good writing is. I hope this shows gives you guys all the same joy it brings me to watch it
I’ve watched Gravity Falls multiple time and on every watch I notice something I didn’t the last time and I just think that’s amazing. It gives the show rewatchability and that’s something all shows should want.
I have the official book “journal #3” and this is basically as true to a conversion to the show as it gets. The book feels like an extension of the universe. It even has secret ciphers and its own alphabet. I’ll try to recreate some of the messages if anyone’s interested.

It is absolutely beautiful when a show knows when it’s going to finish.
I love this show so much. The ending made me cry like a baby. It was done so well, connecting the feelings of the characters to those of the viewers. As summer was coming to an end - we didn't want the story to end as well.
So glad that the show comitted to its final and didn't continue. Stories with a great ending are so much stronger than those that drag on and on.
So true! The end was so beautiful, I couldn't sleep that night cuz of the emotions. It tied all of the loose ends, and the scene where Stan and the kids depart was just gut-punching. So glad I got to experience such an amazing show, I'll always cherish it 💖

nowadays gravity falls almost makes me cry remembering my childhood and it definitely helped to have a show with a character I could genuinely relate to for once compared to other shows at the time (dipper)
