You know something that also probably affected stan a lot. Is that when he took Fords place, everyone thought he was the one who died. I think i remember at some point stan even mentioned there wasnt even a funeral held for him after he faked his death to take over stanfords life because no one cared enough about him to do so. That part just seemed to come back to me every now and then and makes stan a much sadder character
The sad thing is, given that the show ended in 2016, we’re getting closer and closer to the point where both brothers would probably no longer be alive from age alone considering they’re in their late 60’s/early 70’s

When Bill and Ford met you could already tell they were both gonna make huge mistakes, bill moved his knight to an illegal square in the game of inter dimensional chess and Ford moved his queen past the row of pawns without an opening.

Journal 3 reveals that Bill's plan after destroying the journal was to throw Dipper's body off the water tower, and that Dipper would've been stuck in the mindscape forever.

A little thing about Gravity Falls' episode count and yet how good it was is that it was planned out _from the start_ to have only 40 episodes, while other shows were more open-ended starting out or were subject to corporate meddling which ruined the pace of the show. Gravity Falls is a show that was _allowed_ to reach its full potential.
@@phantom9831 I'm not sure about that. In one of the earliest episodes, McGucket has a son, who was never ever mentioned afterwards, for example. There were other instances, where I got the feeling, that, while the main course was set, not every detail about the plot was fully developed, when the show startet.

There are interviews (see the BTS gravity falls podcast) where Hirsch confirmed that they hadn’t planned everything out yet when they were working on season 1-they didn’t even decide on bill being the final big bad until later on! And even stuff like mcgucket being fords assistant was not planned from the beginning

Nickelodeon understood this with Avatar. Disney understood this with Gravity Falls. Kids WB understood this with the original DC animated shows. Now Cartoon Network needs to fucking learn and put an end to Teen Titans Go.

If this show didn't have to remain kid-friendly for where it's shown, Bill would've been an even more badass character. I love a villain without a tragic/reasonable backstory. He just exists. I love it
He is a simple two-dimensional villain, even his damn character, but BESIDES being "plain" he is also cool, which is why it works. Like the guy from Princess and the Frog and old Disney movies. You know he is bad, but he is so cool while being bad that you love him

Funny how Stanley, the seemingly selfish conman, turned out to be the most selfless character in the whole show. Everything he's worked for, everything he cared about, it was all for his family.
Stanley doesn't like to admit, but he loves his family. The whole reason he destroyed Ford's machine was too prevent Ford from leaving him, and going to a good College. In the end Stan sacrificed him, to save his brother, Dipper, and Mabel.

Bill's mistake was underestimating others. Bill and Stan are a lot more in common than you might see at a first glance. Stan Pines burned a lot of bridges in his life, severing his relationship with his family. Bill Cipher burned his dimension to the ground because nobody followed his way of thinking, considering them feeble-minded.
Something else I really liked about Mabel and Stan's similarities is that at both their weakest moments, each felt as though not only their best friend and anchor was potentially leaving them, but they could not follow. Neither Mabel or Stan believed either held the same importance as their sibling and as such would inevitably be forced to live in their own stagnant "bubble" forever alone. I think it's actually the hatred and acceptance of their own inability to move forward based around their own insecurities that sparks the fear in them to keep those they love too close. Afterall, a screwup or a joke is only such when they admit it to others, right?
I never thought about that! Cause Ford did say to Stan “guess you’ll just have to come visit me on the other side of the country” before the whole accident happens. Stan truly thought the only outcome was him staying there while Ford left. It wouldn’t have been easy but he could’ve left with Ford and had adventures with him. Same with Mabel tho it’s the opposite with Dipper staying and her leaving. Maybe she could’ve convinced her parents to let them both stay-not to say they would’ve let either of them stay-but it’s more the mindset that this was over with no options. And it’s probably cause they always felt like the inferior twin. Which is so ironic because Ford and Dipper also felt like the inferior twin because they couldn’t fit in or be normal but that drove them to try to prove themselves rather than hide in one place-tho hiding from the problem and running from it are truly the same action in the end.

I like how Bill is the literal embodiment of letting ambition control you. Stanford and Dipper were very ambitious for answers about Bill and the weirdness so they lead their ambition to make a deal with Bill (selfishness and ambition) which like in real life causes big sacrifices. Their sacrifices was abandoning the people closest to you.
I don’t agree with this. At the end of the show we see Stanley and Stanford on a boat. This is reminiscent of their shared childhood ambition/dream to sail across the sea together. I don’t think ambitiousness is the issue - ambition can be an incredibly good thing. You can also be ambitious and have a healthy ego. Instead, Bill is a representation of an unhealthy ego and selfishness.

I'd say his real fatal mistake was being so eager to get into Ford's head that he completely missed whose head he was really getting into. You'd think with all his power that once he shook Stan's hand, he'd know what was going on. But I guess that comes back down to his overclocked ego again.
Do not forget, in Stanford's head was metallic plate, which was preventing Bill to come in Stan's mind. Bill couldn't know how would look mind defended by steel plate.
Does he feel? At least does his hands feel? Because his eye obviously can be hurt, but if he can't feel the 5 fingers on Stan's hand...plus he feels like he's about to finally succeed in a plan that has been plotted for multiple eternities.
The thing I honestly found creepiest about Bill is the fact that he targets Mabel at her most vulnerable to get what he wants... and still technically "delivers" on his side of the bargain.
The thing is, Bill DOES give his end of the bargain in some form, well besides Gideon, but he does. He gives his side of the deal with Dipper when Dipper gets desperate to solving the laptop only to lead Dipper to find out who made the laptop. Bill seems to be insane but he does gives his own side of the deal in some cursed way.

In the two I can recall them making one never got fully concluded on the details, then the second was involving escaping his jail cell iirc which he did and even said he got his end of the bargain which was Gideon in a way got Mabel, just not in the way that actually mattered.

So, so glad the show went out on its own terms. The idea of a show this special, never having an ending, but being milked for season after season without purpose beyond gaining wealth, is breaking. The show left the airwaves as a legend. And I'd rather have witnessed a legend, than watch a legend turn into a pale imitation of what they once were.

Mabel wasn't worse than Dipper, for one thing she had no idea who she was making a deal with when she gave up the orb. I think it's unfair that people hate on her when in reality all of the characters are flawed and have to learn to grow, not just her
I think the reason why a lot of people don’t like her is the lack of character development. In the sock opera, bill is right. What exactly has Mabel sacrificed that helped dipper? She always presumes and pressures him to do stuff. Especially the black mail part. Her being more mindful of her pressuring others and of what they value. Is this Mabel realistic? Yes, but she’s not a satisfyingly character.
So? She nearly killed the whole world by making that deal. I don't care if she's 12, she almost got the whole world killed. She is a lot worse than Dipper.

I find it kind of spine-chilling that the creator of Gravity Falls, Alex Hirsch, is the voice actor of Bill Cipher. I don’t really know how to explain it, it kind of feels like Bill was the one who created all this and knew it was gonna happen
It's also wonderfully designed how Stanley's the one to kill him. Seeing as they're both played by Alex Hirsch, the creator of the show, the only one Bill couldn't predict was Stanley.
It was so nice to see a series hold true to their writing. I get so tired of seeing networks cling to a successful series and make it go on and on past it’s natural conclusion. Eventually, the series rots from the inside out until you get this thing that’s an empty husk of itself. Gravity Falls told a great story and knew when to end it.
I'd say the entire video is true, but you could also argue Bill made a more specific fatal error by saying this- "Who would sacrifice everything they’ve worked for just for their dumb sibling?”" Before Bill said this to Mabel she was starting to give him the book, but once she realised Dipper would've done just that she changed her mind and fought him. Had he just kept his mouth shut Mabel would've given him the book and he would've had a far easier time taking over the world.
True but doesn't stan make a copy of journal 3 in the first episode of season 2? I may have that wrong but if bill did get the book stan would have another copy

The only reason he was able to get all the books in the end was because Dipper and Mabel got the others, he wouldn't have ever been able to get them on his own right? Also what if a copy doesn't work the same way as the original? Also did he not use the original book in the end? The copy would've been as a last resort but ig we'll never know whether the copy would've had the same power as the original. Ofc most of this stuff is just theorising, but even if a copy works just as well as the original then Bill probably would've still immensely set back Dipper and Mabel since I think (not 100% sure) that their book helped them in multiple scenarios and if Bill destroyed it they wouldn't have been able to find/do a lot of things since they wouldn't have even known that Stan had a copy. Idk if I explained that well, but yeah, ig there's no real right or wrong here, just what's more or less likely!
Yeah I think dipper had 3 gideon had 2 and stan had 1 originally but yeah I think 3 was the most important to the show as dipper used it alot of the time had bill destroyed it would have been a major set back. Thinking about it now even if stan has a copy dipper doesn't have access to it as he doesn't even know that stan has the other 2 until later. Bills ultimate goal was to stop dipper from getting answers by destroying the laptop and book I think.

TV is turned into a bigger screened TH-cam so I can't really watch any full episodes. Plus, Disney channels has ceased broadcast in southeast Asia. Memories. I wish I could still enjoy them. Every main character in the show has been tricked by bill at some point, using their own selfishness against them Everyone except Stanley. As greedy and selfish as he seems on the outside, everything he does is out of love for his family and has never once considered betraying them for his own gain. This makes Stanley the one who has suffered the most from bills plans and deals with the rest of his family and also the one who bill always seemed to overlook and ignore. So when it came time for bill to come face to face with Stanley, he could do nothing but beg. You can’t con a conman and you certainly can’t con Stanley
And as Bill pleads and bargains for his existence, Stanley doesn't even bat an eye. Earlier in the series, he'd be willing to glue dirty hair on his nephew or lie to his niece for a quick buck, but now that their lives are actually in danger, he refuses to consider any offer of money, power, or an entire galaxy for a moment. He had reached his final form of character development where protecting his family was his first and only priority.
Mabel too. Similar to how Dipper takes after Ford, she takes after Stan. While the fandom has run her character through a lot of vitriol, out of toxic pragmatism, she does things out of compassion. Waddles, pursuing guys, crafting things for others. Bill almost had her during the Sock Opera, but she chose Dipper. And I agree, Stan is utterly tragic. He was essentially punished out of this toxic pragmatism when his family wanted money and casted him out. But he was ultimately right, loving your family matters. He’s like the antithesis of Rick Sanchez

"Dipper sacrificed so much for Mabel!" is such a silly argument because most of those "sacrifices" were just doing the right thing. Keeping his crush (who he never had a chance with) single was NOT more important than Mabel and Waddles' bond. And being able to keep a job that allowed him to hang out with said crush was CERTAINLY NOT more important than Mermando seeing his family again.
Dude, every time I finish the show I cry. It hits especially hard because I used to watch it with my grandfather, and he died to leukemia in november of 2022. I never got to finish it with him again, and now every time I finish this show, I think of him. Fly high, Boyd. I’ll always miss you.
Another thing I noticed was that so far Bill rigged any deal he made with someone, twisting it to fit his needs. In the end, he got tricked by Stan in a similar way, leading to his demise. Also, it's funny how people think selfishness based on ambition is valid, but not selfishness based on love. I don't see people bashing Ford for literally starting this whole thing with Bill as much as they bash Mabel for making one small mistake.
it's kinda weird too, from what i remember, the show pretty much says "hey Ford it wasn't cool making a deal with this interdimensional dream dorito you shouldn't have done that" but no one really says anything about that and instead hate more on Mabel even though she clearly got manipulated into breaking the thing and unleashing chaos itself onto gravity falls. though there are probably more reasons than that but you get what i mean

The fact is exactly that, Ford gets called out for his action and suffer the consequences of being trapped for years in various dimension, mabel don't get called out and the consequences that she suffer is being trapped in a dream dimension for two days. I understand your point but that doesn't mean is 100% correct.
I know im a bit late to this, but i find it poetic how Bill's own ego is ultimately what beat him. This ego is shown in 2 forms. First, when he realized his powers were confined to Gravity Falls, he got desperate to break free, and desperation can make people overlook simple details because they are solely focused on their own desires. Second, Bill saw himself as higher than everyone else. He had more power than anyone else in the universe and has successfully tricked almost everyone trying to stop him. Because of this, he truly believed his plan to get into Ford's mind by sacrificing the kids had worked, ignoring the fact that Stan and Ford might have had 1 final trick up their sleeve. These aspects of Bill's character culminate in one moment: the handshake. When Bill and "Ford" shook hands, Bill's feeling of superiority made him believe that he was in control and that he knew exactly what was going on. His desperation not only led him to going so far i.e., sacrificing the kids and leading to Stan sacrificing his mind, but also blinded him to the fact that the "Ford" he shool hands with only had 5 fingers, a detail Bill surely would have noticed if he hadn't been so focused on his own selfish desires. It is very fitting that Bill had been using ego as a weapon for the entire series, and yet it was his own ego that ultimitely did him in. Great video!
exactly. although in the frame where the deal was made, stan had six fingers? it could have been just the custom glove since it's ford's, but even then the unused finger part thing wouldn't have been straight like the other fingers
Damn you're right. In the official Journal 3, at the end, Stanford talks exactly about that: about his ego and how his brother, Stanley, was a real hero. He says that he forgot what really matters and it was Stanley who paid the price (had his merory wiped). This show is really deep, and I don't even think its creator had that big of an idea when he first thought about it.

I like how Alex both confirmed the fan theory about how to stop Bill, while also subverting our expectations by having that plan ruined by the egos of the two brothers. It's a nice way of both giving the fans what they want and going beyond it too! Also, nice video!

In a connected note, Mabel giving up the rift wasn’t just her. Dipper’s wanting to keep secrets to keep her safe made her ignorant of the thing’s importance. Stan and Ford’s strife caused Mabel to get into the mindset she made the choice at, as their fallout made her fear the same would happen between her and Dipper. The dimensional rift was opened in an event brought about by the rifts in the Pines’ relationships.
Funny how the fall out between Stanford and Stanley also led to the cause to everything. If Stanley was with Stanford, like Stanford said in one of the episodes, Stanley would have saw Bill the kind of person he is a mile away.

And a weird thing in the comics there is a cosmic axolotl of sorts and people but mostly matpat theorizes that bill was calling to them and got reborn in another dimension and could be very still alive and that's was he plan b of sorts
What I think is, when Mabel and Dipper come back to their parents, they will tell them everything that happened, and their parents won't believe a thing

We need more shows like gravity falls. Its the right kind of "kid" show. Its proof that good entertainment can be for any age and i miss it so much. the story was so good and satisfying,
Something I’ve noticed, bill always does what he promises at the deal at some point. This is quite strange for this kind of person, it’s like he is forced to, like canonical genies, they are trapped by a some kind of sorcerer (I don’t know who he was) and are forced to grant wishes but being evil in the first place (hence why sorcerer trapped them) they are trying to twist the wish so it would harm more than help
it could also be tied to reliability and reputation, if everyone says that this one guy never keeps his promises, no one would try to make a deal with him
Y’know, gravity falls makes me want to write a journal of my own full of make-believe creatures and leave it in a forest I live by for people to discover.
So basically, short and amazing show was all about the inevitability of endings and the consequences for indulging one's selfishness at the expense of the characters we supposedly love. By ending and showing us there will be a life beyond Gravity Falls, the show reminds us that shows ending is not the true end to all. It is merely the conclusion of this story with more characters to be explored in another story and we as fans should accept that
My favourite detail in the finale is how the only detail that separates Stan and Ford in appearance is that Ford has a ridge in his chin and Stan doesn't. When Bill re enters the room with Dipper and Mabel. Stan suddenly has a ridge in his chin and Ford doesn't. The animators could've just forgotten the detail and leave the majority of the audience not noticing, but I love how you can figure out something suspicious before the sudden reveal that Ford's mind is actually Stan's
@@MrIsaac-cc6om That's the thing - "Ford" didn't lose a finger on each hand. But "Stan" gained a finger. It's a bit of a plot contrivance -- but in the scene earlier where Ford picks up the spray-paint can to draw the Cipher Wheel, he first puts on gloves. Why? There's no reason there for him to put gloves on. He wasn't ever shown wearing gloves a lot before or anything. But he takes a moment to put them on; the episode is careful to show us him doing that. So it's very coincidentally valuable later -- crucial, even! -- because by Stan putting on Ford's 6-fingered gloves, and presumably stuffing something into the extra finger (who knows what, but it doesn't matter - could be a torn-off hem of his shirt or something), it allowed Stan to "be" Ford and look like he had 6 fingers. Stan couldn't have done that if Ford hadn't put on those gloves earlier. And by establishing earlier that Ford had put on gloves, the show doesn't have to make a point of it in the later scene, so they can preserve the "surprise" of the twin-switch for viewers who don't pick up on other details. (They were also careful to alter a couple of other details to make the switch easier to pull off. Normally, Ford's hair is darker than Stan's, and Ford has a lighter-grey streak at his temples and around the back of his head. Ford also has longer sideburns than Stan does -- Stan makes fun of them in that first reunion scene in ATOTS. Those are two details that Stan couldn't have mimicked easily. When Bill comes back holding Dipper and Mabel, we're given a quick shot of "Stan" and "Ford" looking through the bars of their cage, and holding onto the bars. "Stan" is closer to us, so his hand on the bars is right there in our faces -- and that hand has six fingers. But it goes by very quickly, and if you're focusing on anything else in the scene -- like the expressions on their faces -- you might not notice it. Just like you might not notice the cleft chin on "Stan", or the bumps on "Ford's" nose. The animators put the clues in there to explain everything and show us the twin-switch, but they also knew that those scenes were so dramatic that a lot of viewers' attention would be on other things in the shot. But the evidence is there when you go back and watch, and that's pretty great.
Another big thing with bills demise is that he was so blinded by greed and the thought of finally being able to escape, fufilling his ego that he completely throws caution to the wind, Stan says it himself: “welcome to my mind, surprised you didn’t recognize it.”
I mean it is kind of true if Dio didn't piss jotaro off Dio could easily win against the rest of the crusaders not to mention without jotaro kakyoin and polnareff wouldn't probably be a part of the crusaders and I mean what did Dio even need the stand for he was a vampire he just had to wait untill he got his powers back and then he could probably deal with the joestars then get his stand because joeseph stopped training his hamon
Also, Bill made the mistake of wanting Dipper and Mabel to struggle. He could’ve just petrified them, bit no. He wanted to see Dipper run in fear, he wanted Mabel to be trapped out of reality against her will... If he hadn’t shown up in Ford’s dream, the unicorn spell wouldn’t exist either, but he wanted to see the Pines family get worried. He wanted to have a big revenge, but this leaded to his defeat.
Actually, I always assumed that Bill trapping Mabel in Mabeland was him fulfilling his part of the deal. The most logical thing to do would have been to kill her, but the show heavily implies that Bill can't outright break a deal, he can only twist it. As for Dipper, he intended for the Henchmaniacs to kill him. His mistake in that case wasn't wanting Dipper to struggle, it was underestimating him and not finishing him off himself

Can I just say thank you for actually taking a different take on the Mabel rift subject. Because you actually gave it an approach that is more similar to what REALLY happened! I'm tired of people saying the "oh Mabel is so selfish for giving Bill the rift!" stick cause of how wrong it is. Like you said, it was a giving in to ego, but also resolve from it, and I feel fans don't credit Mabel enough for that because newsflash, she did overcome it. Plus, and I think you hinted at it but didn't really mention it, but there is a mental health level to the story too IMO. The events that led to the rift breaking all stemmed from how bad a day Mabel had. She learned many things she believed were not true, her friends would not be there for her, and her brother may be going too. Anyone can deny it as much as they want, but I feel that anyone put in Mabel's shoes would act the same way. It's human nature. We are all for self preservation first in moments of difficulty or weakness, no matter how selfless we say we are. It does not make Mabel, or any other character in the show a bad person, just more human. It's a shame not that many people will ever understand that or see it that way, but I hope some do. Mabel hate in general was a really annoying problem in the fandom a few years back. I'm happy to see it be less of an issue as more and more people either move on or realize these facts. Either way, great video. Nice to see Gravity Falls still be talked about after all these years :)
I also find it weird how people call Mabel selfish but brush off the numerous times Dipper almost gets people killed trying to discover the secrets of Gravity Falls. Not saying that Dipper is selfish or a bad person, he's simply flawed. Just like Mabel. imo, well written characters HAVE flaws, that's what gives them depth and makes them interesting. :/
The issue for most people, at least from what I've seen, isn't so much that Mabel is selfish (as the video covered, all of our beloved characters are), but that it is rare if ever that Mabel actually faces consequences for her ego.

But at the same time I feel it's a very hypocritical thing for fans to say, because if you look beyond Mabel, there are other characters who make ego driven mistakes that they never truly face consequences for. A good example would be Dipper...the fandom's golden boy and who always gets justified by fans (from what I've seen) even if he's wrong. The best example of a mistake he made based on the same bases is the zombies in Scary-oke. Dipper was ego driven in raising them from the dead, and in turn, he ruined the party they were holding and assumed up until they returned officially in Not What He Seems, that those two government agents got eaten by them. Simply put, Dipper assumed he killed two people, but never felt remorse for it and pretty much got away with it all. If fans wanna argue about Mabel's escape from punishment, I can get it. But they act as if she is the sole problem while ignoring other character's mistakes. I had a friend who brought basically this same argument up elsewhere and the fans basically trashed on them. They could not accept that Dipper was in the wrong for once. Maybe he's done fewer things like that than Mabel, okay...but if Mabel is gonna face hate for this issue, then what's wrong with also having Dipper be faced with the same thing? That's why I personally have no more interest in hearing what Mabel haters have to say. They hypocritically hate on Mabel for things that they let Dipper or other characters get a free pass on. Until that is acknowledged, then there is no excuse for Mabel hate.
I think Bill didn’t come back because of Gideon. Bill was always there, all his illustrations of him around Gravity Falls. I think Bill didn’t think that Dipper and Mabel were a threat to his plans, but after Dreamscapers he realized they were (“You’re much smarter than you seem”). So Bill started trying to take the young pines twins out.

There's still one problem tho: we learned from the ending and from the Cypher Hunt, a real life scavenger hunt that happened after the serie ended, that Stanley got his memories back and a part of Bill still lives in him. In the treasure found at the Bill Cypher real life statue location, at the end of the Cypher Hunt, it's mentioned multiple times that "you found MY statue", meaning he's still here. Also, Stanley sings the piano song Bill sang to Stanford when Bill meet him again and it's been used as a pretty popular theory that Bill is still alive, just possessing sometimes Stanley's body when he sleeps or something like that.
That is actually seriously horrifying. Imagine Ford waking up to find Stanley grinning over him, eyes glowing like Bill’s, and he says: “Hey Sixer, did ya miss me?”
Or Bill and Stanley are the same with the things mentioned above and the axolotl basically saying if he wants to live he must say my name a different form a different time and the end card saying she didn’t expect twins so she named them both Stan how do you not expect twins?
I love how most of the characters who ending the show in a romantic relationship were characters that you wouldn't expect to be in a romantic relationship by the end if you followed what most shows/films would do, it was a really nice statement on the unpredictable nature of love.

You know something that also probably affected stan a lot. Is that when he took Fords place, everyone thought he was the one who died. I think i remember at some point stan even mentioned there wasnt even a funeral held for him after he faked his death to take over stanfords life because no one cared enough about him to do so. That part just seemed to come back to me every now and then and makes stan a much sadder character
The sad thing is, given that the show ended in 2016, we’re getting closer and closer to the point where both brothers would probably no longer be alive from age alone considering they’re in their late 60’s/early 70’s

A little thing about Gravity Falls' episode count and yet how good it was is that it was planned out _from the start_ to have only 40 episodes, while other shows were more open-ended starting out or were subject to corporate meddling which ruined the pace of the show. Gravity Falls is a show that was _allowed_ to reach its full potential.
Everything in Gravity Falls was already planned from the start, and that's one of the reasons why it is so good

There were other instances, where I got the feeling, that, while the main course was set, not every detail about the plot was fully developed, when the show startet.

There are interviews (see the BTS gravity falls podcast) where Hirsch confirmed that they hadn’t planned everything out yet when they were working on season 1-they didn’t even decide on bill being the final big bad until later on! And even stuff like mcgucket being fords assistant was not planned from the beginning

Bill's mistake was underestimating others. Bill and Stan are a lot more in common than you might see at a first glance.
Stan Pines burned a lot of bridges in his life, severing his relationship with his family. Bill Cipher burned his dimension to the ground because nobody followed his way of thinking, considering them feeble-minded.
And there's even hints suggesting that Bill deeply regretted doing it.

Something else I really liked about Mabel and Stan's similarities is that at both their weakest moments, each felt as though not only their best friend and anchor was potentially leaving them, but they could not follow. Neither Mabel or Stan believed either held the same importance as their sibling and as such would inevitably be forced to live in their own stagnant "bubble" forever alone. I think it's actually the hatred and acceptance of their own inability to move forward based around their own insecurities that sparks the fear in them to keep those they love too close. Afterall, a screwup or a joke is only such when they admit it to others, right?
I never thought about that! Cause Ford did say to Stan “guess you’ll just have to come visit me on the other side of the country” before the whole accident happens. Stan truly thought the only outcome was him staying there while Ford left. It wouldn’t have been easy but he could’ve left with Ford and had adventures with him. Same with Mabel tho it’s the opposite with Dipper staying and her leaving. Maybe she could’ve convinced her parents to let them both stay-not to say they would’ve let either of them stay-but it’s more the mindset that this was over with no options. And it’s probably cause they always felt like the inferior twin. Which is so ironic because Ford and Dipper also felt like the inferior twin because they couldn’t fit in or be normal but that drove them to try to prove themselves rather than hide in one place-tho hiding from the problem and running from it are truly the same action in the end.

I like how Bill is the literal embodiment of letting ambition control you. Stanford and Dipper were very ambitious for answers about Bill and the weirdness so they lead their ambition to make a deal with Bill (selfishness and ambition) which like in real life causes big sacrifices. Their sacrifices was abandoning the people closest to you.

I don’t agree with this. At the end of the show we see Stanley and Stanford on a boat. This is reminiscent of their shared childhood ambition/dream to sail across the sea together. I don’t think ambitiousness is the issue - ambition can be an incredibly good thing. You can also be ambitious and have a healthy ego. Instead, Bill is a representation of an unhealthy ego and selfishness.

I'd say his real fatal mistake was being so eager to get into Ford's head that he completely missed whose head he was really getting into. You'd think with all his power that once he shook Stan's hand, he'd know what was going on. But I guess that comes back down to his overclocked ego again.

Do not forget, in Stanford's head was metallic plate, which was preventing Bill to come in Stan's mind. Bill couldn't know how would look mind defended by steel plate.
Does he feel? At least does his hands feel? Because his eye obviously can be hurt, but if he can't feel the 5 fingers on Stan's hand...plus he feels like he's about to finally succeed in a plan that has been plotted for multiple eternities.
The thing I honestly found creepiest about Bill is the fact that he targets Mabel at her most vulnerable to get what he wants... and still technically "delivers" on his side of the bargain.
He does that in every single deal, you really have to be desperate to consider a deal with him
The thing is, Bill DOES give his end of the bargain in some form, well besides Gideon, but he does. He gives his side of the deal with Dipper when Dipper gets desperate to solving the laptop only to lead Dipper to find out who made the laptop.
Bill seems to be insane but he does gives his own side of the deal in some cursed way.

In the two I can recall them making one never got fully concluded on the details, then the second was involving escaping his jail cell iirc which he did and even said he got his end of the bargain which was Gideon in a way got Mabel, just not in the way that actually mattered.

It was so nice to see a series hold true to their writing. I get so tired of seeing networks cling to a successful series and make it go on and on past it’s natural conclusion. Eventually, the series rots from the inside out until you get this thing that’s an empty husk of itself. Gravity Falls told a great story and knew when to end it.

Before Bill said this to Mabel she was starting to give him the book, but once she realised Dipper would've done just that she changed her mind and fought him. Had he just kept his mouth shut Mabel would've given him the book and he would've had a far easier time taking over the world.

The only reason he was able to get all the books in the end was because Dipper and Mabel got the others, he wouldn't have ever been able to get them on his own right? Also what if a copy doesn't work the same way as the original? Also did he not use the original book in the end? The copy would've been as a last resort but ig we'll never know whether the copy would've had the same power as the original.
Ofc most of this stuff is just theorising, but even if a copy works just as well as the original then Bill probably would've still immensely set back Dipper and Mabel since I think (not 100% sure) that their book helped them in multiple scenarios and if Bill destroyed it they wouldn't have been able to find/do a lot of things since they wouldn't have even known that Stan had a copy.

Every main character in the show has been tricked by bill at some point, using their own selfishness against them
Everyone except Stanley.
As greedy and selfish as he seems on the outside, everything he does is out of love for his family and has never once considered betraying them for his own gain. This makes Stanley the one who has suffered the most from bills plans and deals with the rest of his family and also the one who bill always seemed to overlook and ignore. So when it came time for bill to come face to face with Stanley, he could do nothing but beg.
You can’t con a conman and you certainly can’t con Stanley
And as Bill pleads and bargains for his existence, Stanley doesn't even bat an eye. Earlier in the series, he'd be willing to glue dirty hair on his nephew or lie to his niece for a quick buck, but now that their lives are actually in danger, he refuses to consider any offer of money, power, or an entire galaxy for a moment. He had reached his final form of character development where protecting his family was his first and only priority.
... Or stan's just so good at scamming people that he physically can't fall for bill's scams.
After all that it must have been so satisfying to see such a selfish god literally pleading for his life.

Mabel too. Similar to how Dipper takes after Ford, she takes after Stan. While the fandom has run her character through a lot of vitriol, out of toxic pragmatism, she does things out of compassion. Another thing I noticed was that so far Bill rigged any deal he made with someone, twisting it to fit his needs. In the end, he got tricked by Stan in a similar way, leading to his demise.
Also, it's funny how people think selfishness based on ambition is valid, but not selfishness based on love. I don't see people bashing Ford for literally starting this whole thing with Bill as much as they bash Mabel for making one small mistake.

The fact is exactly that, Ford gets called out for his action and suffer the consequences of being trapped for years in various dimension, mabel don't get called out and the consequences that she suffer is being trapped in a dream dimension for two days. I know im a bit late to this, but i find it poetic how Bill's own ego is ultimately what beat him.
This ego is shown in 2 forms. First, when he realized his powers were confined to Gravity Falls, he got desperate to break free, and desperation can make people overlook simple details because they are solely focused on their own desires.
Second, Bill saw himself as higher than everyone else. He had more power than anyone else in the universe and has successfully tricked almost everyone trying to stop him. Because of this, he truly believed his plan to get into Ford's mind by sacrificing the kids had worked, ignoring the fact that Stan and Ford might have had 1 final trick up their sleeve.
These aspects of Bill's character culminate in one moment: the handshake. When Bill and "Ford" shook hands, Bill's feeling of superiority made him believe that he was in control and that he knew exactly what was going on. His desperation not only led him to going so far i.e., sacrificing the kids and leading to Stan sacrificing his mind, but also blinded him to the fact that the "Ford" he shool hands with only had 5 fingers, a detail Bill surely would have noticed if he hadn't been so focused on his own selfish desires.
It is very fitting that Bill had been using ego as a weapon for the entire series, and yet it was his own ego that ultimitely did him in. Great video!

Damn you're right. In the official Journal 3, at the end, Stanford talks exactly about that: about his ego and how his brother, Stanley, was a real hero. He says that he forgot what really matters and it was Stanley who paid the price (had his merory wiped). This show is really deep, and I don't even think its creator had that big of an idea when he first thought about it.

Today was Gravity Fall’s 10-year anniversary. It truly left its mark on the animation industry and stands out as a series.
In a connected note, Mabel giving up the rift wasn’t just her. Dipper’s wanting to keep secrets to keep her safe made her ignorant of the thing’s importance. Stan and Ford’s strife caused Mabel to get into the mindset she made the choice at, as their fallout made her fear the same would happen between her and Dipper.
The dimensional rift was opened in an event brought about by the rifts in the Pines’ relationships.

So basically, short and amazing show was all about the inevitability of endings and the consequences for indulging one's selfishness at the expense of the characters we supposedly love. By ending and showing us there will be a life beyond Gravity Falls, the show reminds us that shows ending is not the true end to all. It is merely the conclusion of this story with more characters to be explored in another story and we as fans should accept that
My favourite detail in the finale is how the only detail that separates Stan and Ford in appearance is that Ford has a ridge in his chin and Stan doesn't. When Bill re enters the room with Dipper and Mabel. Stan suddenly has a ridge in his chin and Ford doesn't. The animators could've just forgotten the detail and leave the majority of the audience not noticing, but I love how you can figure out something suspicious before the sudden reveal that Ford's mind is actually Stan's

@@MrIsaac-cc6om That's the thing - "Ford" didn't lose a finger on each hand. But "Stan" gained a finger.
It's a bit of a plot contrivance -- but in the scene earlier where Ford picks up the spray-paint can to draw the Cipher Wheel, he first puts on gloves. Why? There's no reason there for him to put gloves on. He wasn't ever shown wearing gloves a lot before or anything. But he takes a moment to put them on; the episode is careful to show us him doing that.
So it's very coincidentally valuable later -- crucial, even! -- because by Stan putting on Ford's 6-fingered gloves, and presumably stuffing something into the extra finger (who knows what, but it doesn't matter - could be a torn-off hem of his shirt or something), it allowed Stan to "be" Ford and look like he had 6 fingers. Stan couldn't have done that if Ford hadn't put on those gloves earlier. And by establishing earlier that Ford had put on gloves, the show doesn't have to make a point of it in the later scene, so they can preserve the "surprise" of the twin-switch for viewers who don't pick up on other details.
(They were also careful to alter a couple of other details to make the switch easier to pull off. Normally, Ford's hair is darker than Stan's, and Ford has a lighter-grey streak at his temples and around the back of his head. Ford also has longer sideburns than Stan does -- Stan makes fun of them in that first reunion scene in ATOTS. Those are two details that Stan couldn't have mimicked easily. But the show takes care of that. When Bill tortures Ford earlier by blasting him with electricity, Ford is shown with smoke rising off him. In that scene, and in all of the scenes with Ford after that, you can't see the silver streak in Ford's hair, presumably because of dirt and smoke from his own smoldering clothes; and his sideburns are partly burned off, and look as short as Stan's. So those are extra details that help Stan, later, pass as "Ford" in Bill's eyes. The show makes the changes and gives a reason for them, but doesn't call particular attention to them.)
When Bill comes back holding Dipper and Mabel, we're given a quick shot of "Stan" and "Ford" looking through the bars of their cage, and holding onto the bars. "Stan" is closer to us, so his hand on the bars is right there in our faces -- and that hand has six fingers. But it goes by very quickly, and if you're focusing on anything else in the scene -- like the expressions on their faces -- you might not notice it. Just like you might not notice the cleft chin on "Stan", or the bumps on "Ford's" nose. The animators put the clues in there to explain everything and show us the twin-switch, but they also knew that those scenes were so dramatic that a lot of viewers' attention would be on other things in the shot. But the evidence is there when you go back and watch, and that's pretty great.
Another big thing with bills demise is that he was so blinded by greed and the thought of finally being able to escape, fufilling his ego that he completely throws caution to the wind, Stan says it himself: “welcome to my mind, surprised you didn’t recognize it.”

Also, Bill made the mistake of wanting Dipper and Mabel to struggle. He could’ve just petrified them, bit no. He wanted to see Dipper run in fear, he wanted Mabel to be trapped out of reality against her will... If he hadn’t shown up in Ford’s dream, the unicorn spell wouldn’t exist either, but he wanted to see the Pines family get worried. He wanted to have a big revenge, but this leaded to his defeat.
Actually, I always assumed that Bill trapping Mabel in Mabeland was him fulfilling his part of the deal. The most logical thing to do would have been to kill her, but the show heavily implies that Bill can't outright break a deal, he can only twist it. As for Dipper, he intended for the Henchmaniacs to kill him. His mistake in that case wasn't wanting Dipper to struggle, it was underestimating him and not finishing him off himself

Gravity Falls is not all about 1 character, not 2 character, not even a support character but the whole series is important cause to connection between characters are so strong that it makes Gravity Falls better other than "just a cartoon series". Can I just say thank you for actually taking a different take on the Mabel rift subject. Because you actually gave it an approach that is more similar to what REALLY happened! I'm tired of people saying the "oh Mabel is so selfish for giving Bill the rift!" stick cause of how wrong it is. Like you said, it was a giving in to ego, but also resolve from it, and I feel fans don't credit Mabel enough for that because newsflash, she did overcome it. Plus, and I think you hinted at it but didn't really mention it, but there is a mental health level to the story too IMO. The events that led to the rift breaking all stemmed from how bad a day Mabel had. She learned many things she believed were not true, her friends would not be there for her, and her brother may be going too. Anyone can deny it as much as they want, but I feel that anyone put in Mabel's shoes would act the same way. It's human nature. We are all for self preservation first in moments of difficulty or weakness, no matter how selfless we say we are. It does not make Mabel, or any other character in the show a bad person, just more human. It's a shame not that many people will ever understand that or see it that way, but I hope some do. Mabel hate in general was a really annoying problem in the fandom a few years back. I'm happy to see it be less of an issue as more and more people either move on or realize these facts. Either way, great video. Nice to see Gravity Falls still be talked about after all these years :)
I also find it weird how people call Mabel selfish but brush off the numerous times Dipper almost gets people killed trying to discover the secrets of Gravity Falls. Not saying that Dipper is selfish or a bad person, he's simply flawed. Just like Mabel. imo, well written characters HAVE flaws, that's what gives them depth and makes them interesting. :/

The issue for most people, at least from what I've seen, isn't so much that Mabel is selfish (as the video covered, all of our beloved characters are), but that it is rare if ever that Mabel actually faces consequences for her ego.
I thought that Mabel's actions were totally fair in that moment. I had no idea why people were shaming her for it. I don't even know why people hate Mabel in the first place.
@@hunter049EN That is an understandable problem. I can get why people feel Mabel never gets called out. But at the same time I feel it's a very hypocritical thing for fans to say, because if you look beyond Mabel, there are other characters who make ego driven mistakes that they never truly face consequences for. A good example would be Dipper...the fandom's golden boy and who always gets justified by fans (from what I've seen) even if he's wrong. The best example of a mistake he made based on the same bases is the zombies in Scary-oke. Dipper was ego driven in raising them from the dead, and in turn, he ruined the party they were holding and assumed up until they returned officially in Not What He Seems, that those two government agents got eaten by them. Simply put, Dipper assumed he killed two people, but never felt remorse for it and pretty much got away with it all. If fans wanna argue about Mabel's escape from punishment, I can get it. But they act as if she is the sole problem while ignoring other character's mistakes. I had a friend who brought basically this same argument up elsewhere and the fans basically trashed on them. They could not accept that Dipper was in the wrong for once. Maybe he's done fewer things like that than Mabel, okay...but if Mabel is gonna face hate for this issue, then what's wrong with also having Dipper be faced with the same thing? That's why I personally have no more interest in hearing what Mabel haters have to say. They hypocritically hate on Mabel for things that they let Dipper or other characters get a free pass on. Until that is acknowledged, then there is no excuse for Mabel hate.
I think Bill didn’t come back because of Gideon. Bill was always there, all his illustrations of him around Gravity Falls. I think Bill didn’t think that Dipper and Mabel were a threat to his plans, but after Dreamscapers he realized they were (“You’re much smarter than you seem”). So Bill started trying to take the young pines twins out.
He had probably been wandering around the world, but when Gideon called him he noticed what was going on, and quickly realized he could capitalize.

There's still one problem tho: we learned from the ending and from the Cypher Hunt, a real life scavenger hunt that happened after the serie ended, that Stanley got his memories back and a part of Bill still lives in him. In the treasure found at the Bill Cypher real life statue location, at the end of the Cypher Hunt, it's mentioned multiple times that "you found MY statue", meaning he's still here. Also, Stanley sings the piano song Bill sang to Stanford when Bill meet him again and it's been used as a pretty popular theory that Bill is still alive, just possessing sometimes Stanley's body when he sleeps or something like that.

That is actually seriously horrifying. Imagine Ford waking up to find Stanley grinning over him, eyes glowing like Bill’s, and he says: “Hey Sixer, did ya miss me?”

I love how most of the characters who ending the show in a romantic relationship were characters that you wouldn't expect to be in a romantic relationship by the end if you followed what most shows/films would do, it was a really nice statement on the unpredictable nature of love.
