  • I have heard so much about how cool and interesting Gravity Falls is, so after all of this time, I finally sat down and watched the show and I must say, there was a lot to this show I didn't expect to see. From the mysteries to the characters to the setting, Gravity Falls is one heck of a ride. Today, let's go into my thoughts on the show and what made it so special.

Alex had to fight Disney's S&M team on quite possibly hundreds of jokes and character aspects, ranging from literally just a spin the bottle joke to Wendy being stated to be bisexual in the show (Which he lost, by the way. Any overt mentions were forcibly removed, leaving only hints, like her mentioning a girl maybe being one of her exes.)
They did allow the two officers to kiss in the finale though.

I truly think Gravity Falls could use a third season in Piedmont to continue the story, in the same way Amphibia had a third season with the Plantar family living in the Boonchuy home, instead of Anne Boonchuy living in the Plantar home in the first two seasons. I wish Pacifica Northwest and Gideon Gleeful had a Gravity Falls episode together. A storyline pairing them together could highlight how they are similar yet different, when giving each of them different episodes to antagonize the Pines family only makes it seem like they are two interchangeable rich kid antagonists who must never meet.

    • @adamkalb1
      @adamkalb1 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Star vs. the Forces of Evil and Big City Greens also had a third season in which the main characters who moved out from their original home at the beginning of the series go back there. Maybe Gravity Falls was just 5 years ahead of its time to follow this pattern. Besides, Mabel and Dipper after their 13th birthday still had another year to go before they finally have to face high school, and another summer where they are in Piedmont instead of Gravity Falls can develop their characters as they learn how to mature and grow together. I am sure Wendy, if she visited Piedmont, would be of big help to them in that.

    • @adamkalb1
      @adamkalb1 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Yes, but in Season 2 I think Alex might have focused a little too much on the story than on the character development that season should have gotten. Instead of the subpar Mabel storylines in Sock Opera and The Love God, we should have had that B-story in Blendin's Game or an adjacent simultaneous episode in which Stan and Wendy go shoplifting and they try to steal a diamond from the Gravity Falls museum, or the good version of Escape From Reality when Mabel learns her lesson instead of Dipper giving in, only for Mabel to passively tell him he does not have to give up Ford's apprenticeship for her. This makes me think Matt Braly is a much better creator than Alex Hirsch. I think Amphibia outperformed Gravity Falls in nearly every way - the stories, the humor, the character development, and the fact that we hear less stories about Matt Braly pulling some High Guardian Spice nonsense that Disney Channel did not like and told him he could not do because it was too dirty for their target audience. Great Uncle Stan wanted to teach kids how to swear and fight for dominance on an island, and High Guardian Spice quickly got infamous for doing both of those things because it is much better at demographically inappropriate humor and beautiful visual artwork than more important things, like world-building, storytelling and character development.

Gravity Falls came out at the time I was in high school and that show became an instant favorite of mine that got me to go to animation school and became an animator now. It's a modern classic that already became timeless, it's jam packed with so many clever jokes, easter eggs/references that are smartly done without being too on the nose, and intriguing mystery plot that felt so satisfying watching when it all came together, everything about it was really unlike anything that came out at the time. It was truly a lightning in a bottle.

What made this show special to me was first of all, the art. My goodness, is it gorgeous to look at! The backgrounds are absolutely incredible to look at! That, and the music really bring me in, especially during the more dramatic moments.
But most importantly, it’s beachside of the relatability I had with characters such as Dipper, Grunkle Stan, and Ford. I saw much myself inside of them I haven’t really seen before in a cartoon.
Yes, Dipper is the brains. But with that comes a blunt, curious, analytical, brave, and kind character who stood his ground, and had a deep passion for what he loved. (Interestingly enough, his passion for the paranormal and mysteries is the kind of passion I have for art and animation.)
Grunkle Stan is a wildcard who shamelessly gets gets away with a lot of scams, yet I did not expect him to bear so much pain and love for his family. This was beautifully captured by the episode, “Not What He Seems”.
I very much ended up loving Ford for the same reasons as Dipper. The knowledge he gains from his adventures in Gravity Falls and in other dimensions is intriguing, the experiences he has with Bill are terrifying, and, like Dipper, he has a harder time making connections with people in the ways the other characters can.
Oh, and Bill could not be a more perfect villain! He has the wits of all three characters, from a scamming, analytical, intelligent perspective. Yet he cranks it up to the max by trying to destroy the world through chaos, not by seeking any benefit or wonders within it.
I guess in order for me to get into the show, it has to do with putting yourself in the characters’ shoes, and watching it through their perspectives.

I was always wondering where the show was going and what cool crazy stuff they would have in each episode.

Alex truly reinvented cartoon storytelling at Disney and the epic cinematic lore driven legacy that he started would later live on in other well written shows such as DuckTales reboot, Amphibia and The Owl House. Gravity Falls proved that cartoons can be enjoyed be everyone and not just kids. I’m so glad I grew up with it otherwise I wouldn’t be the person I am today.

The more I side with (or at least understand more of) Stanley’s perspective
He was forced to survive on his own and had no one
Then when his brother finally reaches out to him
It’s to tell him to take a book and go as far away as possible
Basically using his own brother as a tool to undo the mess Ford himself caused

You also forgot about two major things. The humor and the ciphers at the ends of the episodes were AMAZING! The humor was so unique and ahead of its time, always too fun to rewatch. As for the codes, it makes you feel like a part of the series to decode them yourself with the rest of the fandom. It added another layer of mystery and it felt like the story within the show was only reaching the surface of what was actually going on

  • @DocumentaryFanboy

This is just perfect timing!!! I was just reminiscing about the nostalgia I had for the show.
    A little backstory:
When the show started airing on ukrainian tv I was around the same age as the characters meaning that I was just the perfect demographic. One of my favorite shows growing up (largely thanks to my parents) was The X Files (which the creator has cited as one of the three major influences on the show, along with Twin Peaks and his own childhood) so I always liked stories about weird and outlandish monsters, demons and whatnot. Around this age I also started getting into mythology, folklore, conspiracy theories and unexplained phenomena (I was essentially Dipper and Ford combined) which is a fascination I've had with me to this day so having a show which combines all of these in a neat, relatable setting (I grew up in a small town very much like Gravity Falls, well without the monsters, demons and cosmic level threats (the ones that I knew of anyway)) was a joy to see and watch on a weekly basis. My first episode was Headhunters.
It's one of the few shows I watched as it aired and I could have speculated about what will happen with the rest of the fanbase. It was just an extremley immersive experiance.
It's also one of the things that inspired me to take on writing. Ever since I saw Journal 3 appear I just had to make my own version. Unfortunatley a lot of my own personal copies (which didn't particularly replicate what appeared in the show mind you, and yes ther's more than one) didn't survive, but I still have a few which I will guard with my life. To this day I write stories and works like this and I thank this show (and The Spiderwick Chronicles books) to paving the way for it. Just the whole feel of trying to solve a mystery in my own town (even if it was a fake one) still has to be one of the happiest moments of my childhood.
I still find Bill Cipher to be the best animated tv villain. Sure you can bring up The Beast, Mark Hammil's Joker, Ozai, Skeletor or even Slade, but none of them combined the humor, oddity, menace and sense of power in the way that Bill does.
I've rewatched the show 3 times in 3 diffrent languges (ukrainian, russian and english) and I still can't get enough. It's hands down the best animated show I've had the pleasure of witnessing and I'm not that much of an animation fan to begin with.
All and all it's a beautiful, touching, quirky, sometimes disturbing, yet still wickedly funny and charming series which I hope to introduce to my kids if I ever have them someday.
As per to what moments give me goosepbumps I'm gonna say that the reveal of Ford, the reveal of the spacecraft and that tearjerker of an ending still make me want to cry at just how beautiful they are.

All the characters were charming and I had quickly found my favorites while watching. When the final episode aired I was a mess of bittersweetness as the twins' summer came to an end. When I had learned about the Cipher Hunt a few years after it happened (didn't have Twitter at the time), it was incredible to see fans from all over come together to solve Alex's final gift of the show.

This is one of the best shows ever made. Its rare for me to say but its a perfect show. There's only a few shows that are a complete series that I give that title of perfect to, but this show earned it. I started watching this show about 2 or 3 months before the series finale came. I don't even remember what got me started honestly. I think I'd maybe heard good things about it or someone told me about it. I can't recall at this point, but I'd downloaded every episode and binged watched it. I couldn't stop. It was sooo fun, so dramatic, so beautifully animated, the intro was just *chef's kiss* gold, and then when I hit that penultimate episode, I was fucking READY for that finale and it paid off with my everflowing tears. I cried multiple times watching this show and I have since continued to cry when I think about it. It got me emotionally, it got me invested. Not many shows can get me that deep. Doctor Who. Fullmetal Alchemist/Brotherhood. Just to name a few. But this show? Definitely with those in my top 10 ever created. I'm thankful for the adventure, the actual thought out plot and backstories of characters like Old Man McGucket! Oh my god that shit broke my soul man smh.....i fucking love this show. I even messaged Alex on twitter asking when the bluray would come out and he even responded to me saying he didn't know and it was up to Disney. And then some years later BOOM! Bluray. I screamed and preordered it and when it came, I rewatched the entire thing in beautiful 1080p quality (as it deserves to be seen in all its proper 1080p glory and dvds shouldn't even be made for it because its just soo disrespectful) and cried all over again. So I say all this to say. Yeah, I really love this show and think its perfect and can't wait to put my son on this shit lol. I'll be sure to update when I finish it with him and let you all know what he thinks.

Not to mention all the Christmas-y things that can be made. Elves v. Gnomes. Krampus/Santa. Flying reindeer is already weird enough, time to add it in for plot reasons. I mean there's so much unexplored that could be great for Christmas. The only thing I hate is how there's nothing.

Yeah I did know some things going in, specifically the biggest twist in the show. (you know the one)
But that didn't stop me getting fully invested. Binged it all in about a week.
I already knew Schaal's voice from Bob's Burgers, and yep Mabel might be my favourite part of the show. But Dipper, Grunkle Stan, Soos & Wendy are all great too.
The ending of the show is probably what impressed me the most. It knew how and when to end, unlike other shows (Phineas & Ferb among others), the crazy visuals in weirdmageddon were awesome and the emotional goodbyes did get to me (despite me going through the show so quickly).

I watched the entire series back when it was airing. Since I was also a fan of Adventure Time, I was already used to comedic shows with dark and sometimes mysterious imagery. But Gravity Falls managed to have a completely different and special atmosphere of its own.
The complex and lovable characters, the believable interpersonal conflicts, the clever humor and engaging visuals, the brilliant little details of foreshadowing, the audience even being given a chance to partake in solving the overarching mystery of the series. So many things about this series combined to make it an entertaining and memorable watching experience.

i was a fan of the show from the moment it premiered, and kept up with the fandom on tumblr throughout the series’ run.
there’s no way to fully convey just how *fun* it was to be a fan during that time. there was so much to play around with in the time between episodes (disney put us through some painful hiatuses), and it was a blast just being online and participating in all the clue-finding and speculation! because there were just *so many* easter eggs and codes and hints littered throughout, different people would pick up on different things and then get together and share what they’d found. there was a lot of time to just sit and marinate between episodes, and i used to rewatch the newest episode over and over because they were always just that good.
the show still holds up marvelously, and i highly recommend it to anyone who hasn’t seen it, but there really was a lot of magic in experiencing it in real time that’s hard to fully convey.
Also! If you haven’t seen Motorcity, that’s another absolute BANGER show that was on disney around the same time, and it got absolutely shafted. It was way too good for disney, especially considering how much the network screwed it over. Jordan’s even got a banger vid on it, so…

While I never got to take part in it, upon reading about it online and watching videos on it, I'd say that it must've been a lot of fun figuring these puzzles out. Although, I do sometimes wonder, what if someone not part of the hunt just happened to stumble across the statue before anyone else, and then posts online with something like "hey does anyone know what this statue is? found it in the forest", only for a ton of people to freak out or something.

Another great selling point for the show was every episode would end with a code or multiple codes to solve. Some later episodes had codes in them or keys to other codes. It took some brain work to solve them and the payoff (early on) was maybe an added joke, but later clues would give hints of things to come. I've not seen another show that's done this sort of thing giving the viewers 'homework' to solve to learn more about the world they've become invested in, but it fits so well with the overall theme of mysteries.
