    Was pulled over after leaving work back in the late70's. My shift at work had ended and as I was leaving we got a bomb threat- good time to be leaving right? Cops be rolling in, one turns around, lights me up, so I pull over in a gas station- in my stoner van- and they're yelling at me to get out of the van. I get out, see a rifle and 2 hand guns pointed at me. These cops were all plainclothes and were probably shocked to see a small, white woman step out. They asked me who was in the van, no one but me. I asked if they were investigating the bomb threat at the phone company building across the street, yes they said to which I reply, this the gas station, you might wanna go check out the building that's under threat of being blown up. People with guns are damn scary. Period. Watch your videos every night and catch you on Comedy Central. Totally enjoy your work.

      @@FanFicnic Josh did a full set on Diddy - like 30 minutes - the day Diddy was arrested and his charging papers were made public. He didn’t get a single fact wrong and every “joke” or “punchline” was spot on, fresh and SO funny. I put those two words in quotes because Josh is so much more than a comedian. He’s a storyteller. He’s an observationist.)
      The journey to the end of one of his stories/observtions is most of the fun! And he always explains - humorously, of course - the topics or situations he’s going to cover. “For those who don’t know who so-and-so is, let me explain … “ I know I’m in on the joke when he says that!

    This is apples to oranges when it comes to police interactions, but reflects the abuse of authority some officers try to take. I'm a 5'1", white, small-framed woman and I had an officer threaten to arrest me for being belligerent because I wouldn't agree with his version of events. His version was a lie. It was incredibly intimidating, but I wasn't afraid for my life either. I was able to hold out by making it clear that my attorney would be requesting a copy of his car and body cam footage and he eventually backed down. (I don't really have an attorney.) I can't imagine how that conversation would have gone if I weren't in a privileged position in a very public area and had to be worried about more than being taken to jail on false charges.

    Ngl every time I watch a new set by Josh, I get a little irritated with TDS. What in the WORLD are they doing/thinking, typecasting this dude into the character they seem to limit him to in every appearance?
    I've watched stand up for 40+ years, and I do NOT throw around names like Carlin/Pryor around lightly when comparing a comedian's talent/presence/depth of material. IMO, Josh Johnson has THAT level of talent/presence/depth. His introspection, his delivery, his ability to connect with his audience in an intelligent, relatable, humble way which makes them laugh but also makes them THINK and EMPATHIZE. This dude is generational, and I have a feeling that several years from now, I'm not going to be the only one putting him in the same tier with those other legendary names.

      I'm also in your position as a ghosty canuck, and am super super fortunate to have only had to deal with police in instances where they are answering domestic calls my family has made, and it was when I was far younger. The other instances were when my mom would send me to the cops posted up at a popular 3 way stop sign that was notoriously rolled through/ignored to give them fresh baked cookies and muffins 😂 maybe that's why they were always so courteous with our house, haha.
      It has definitely left me with a naivety/blind spot to potential bad encounters with police, but it's also just very different here I think compared to the US. I think a lot of Canadians are raised with the 'apologize for everything' mind-set, and it truly goes a long way to de-escalating problems quickly and disarming a lot of angry reactions

    Spot on with what we allow police to get away with. I was recently approached by a cop with his gun drawn while driving my car because he suspected it was a stolen vehicle. (Unfortunately, my license number was the same as a car reported stolen except the stolen car also had handicapped plates). As this was the third time I'd been stopped but the first time an officer felt the need to have his gun so ready, I visited the DMV and paid for new plates. At the time of the stop I was driving in downtown Chicago on a Sunday afternoon and the whole scene felt surreal. Fortunately, seeing a 71 year old female whose innocence was pretty obvious caused the cops to back down pretty quickly, but they almost seemed disappointed. The cop who stopped me the second time assured me he'd had to pull older drivers out of their cars before and seemed to think that was something to be proud of. He seemed to be on a macho man trip. I wish "officers of the peace" was a moniker that was both celebrated and embraced by those brave men and women who protect and defend. I think it would serve the public better.

This is nae as big a problem outside the states. Idolising an idiot who plays a sport is a mistake. And let us not forget; organised sports are just another form of enslavement. How many times do you see a situation escalated when a cop perceives disrespect from the person they are dealing with? They get angry, or snap and then use force to get their way. I think all waiters and waitresses, fast food workers and customer service people should be allowed to act the same way as long as the police are.

    I can’t imagine that being the default setting- and with all the racism and fear from the ‘professionals’.. often fucking children with guns.. if you were to add felon on top of that. And ‘regular offender’… which I now can attest simply means they know your car and life now, you stand out. I'm a middle-aged white suburban woman, so I will never understand the fear others feel around police officers, but with all the police violence around the country, even *I* am scared to get pulled over these days... The fact that they walk up to your car with their hand on their holster? Can they like.... NOT assume I might need to get shot?

    • @williamcrowe2576
      @williamcrowe2576 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Understandable. These days, you can be asked to show your ID and then they assume you're going for a concealed weapon when you're only getting out your wallet.

      @mydoggylives 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I see your point, but you have to realize that they have no idea what or who they're walking up on. So they have to be ready. Police officers have been shot on simple, routine traffic stops before. It could be someone on drugs, someone with a warrant, or just someone wanting to play GTA for real... they just don't know and have to be prepared. It's usually why they stand behind the driver next to the rear door when approaching at first... it gives them a few more seconds to notice if the driver is pulling out a gun or something. I can't blame them for being cautious.

      @@mydoggylivesbut can you also blame civilians for behaving the way we do? We don’t know what kind of police officer we’re about to interact with. And if Mr Officer is having a bad day, it’s gonna be a bad day for everyone. That’s the difference. The officer has the authority and leverage to make other people have bad days or worse days than they’re already suffering. When you’re at work you shouldn’t be an a-hole. You should try to be professional and respectful at all times. The ‘back the blue’ guys don’t get that. My rudeness does not justify the officers being violent. But we allow that, then blame the civilians when it happens. But what happened to officers being respectful and professional?

    • @mydoggylives
      @mydoggylives 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@SydneyAnokam I don't blame citizens for being cautious or worried either. If both parties act with respect towards one another then there shouldn't be any problems. Mr. Hill went out of his way to escalate the situation rather than DE-escalate it. I'm not saying the officers did nothing wrong in the scenario. His windows were tinted so that you couldn't see inside the car though. That's why they kept telling him to keep his window down. There was no need for it to go any further than that. He would've received his ticket and been on his way.

    I'm in New Zealand. I can go for weeks driving around and never see a patrol car - but I can get ticketed by speeding cameras and red light cameras, and I can get ticketed for not having my car registered and safety warranted by parking attendants while I'm in a mall. And I never feel stressed when I see a police car. And I never have to mentally wonder if everything on my car is okay.
    And I never have to be worried that I'll be pulled over just for the colour of my skin. I'm sad every time I hear of these stories. Thanks for your measured response, Josh, and for educating this guy on the other side of the world.
