  • Last weekend I went for a solo hike and wildcamp on Dartmoor to continue my tor bagging adventure. So much went wrong imon this hike.. My bag broke, my coat ripped, my electrical dry sack seeped water in, my selfie stick snapped and for anyone who follows me on Instagram, you'll know I didn't boil the water properly and spent the evening on the toilet. Oh, and I accidentally hiked into a military firing zone! How was your weekend? 😂 In all seriousness though, i freaking loved it... Real life drama, none of this everyday noggin stuff!
    .
Below is the list of tors bagged:
    53) Sourton tor
    54) Branscombe loaf
    55) Gren Tor
    56) kitty tor
    57) hunt tor
    58) Green tor
    59) Dunna groat tor
    60) Chat tor
    61) Sharp tor
    62) Hare Tor
    63) Little dinner groats

I visited a few ancient sites there whilst on holiday in the past including King Athur's Hall, a unique rectangular stone circle, the energy there was amazing! You cooked one of my standard hiking meals! I use tomato and basil cupasoup instead of the bolognese sauce you had. Not as nice, to be frank, but 'warm and wet'. I also just crumble the ramen into the soup then stir in the soya mince after the noodles have cooked to absorb some of the liquid.
Other 'delightful' combinations of ramen and powdered soups are available! For non vegans, my teen likes a flat block of feta cheese and salami slices, but he doesn't like the soups so has his ramen drained. He will also carry the extra weight and volume of tinned sweetcorn.

Hey muddy x one of the reasons all bootnecks continue using there bivvy bags and dry bags even on a hike. Is because of the chance of fog and just general damp conditions x have a look on British military surplus site's. If you search just that one will pop up you can get one for about 30 quid. They last years and years. And you can use them to line your pack too x

Hi Becca, nice video and what a shame you had those unplanned events to deal with! All part of the fun 😊. Couldn't tell from your video, but I don't think that was Branscombe Loaf you bagged - it's got a distinctive lump of granite that looks a bit like a Hovis loaf (unsliced of course!). well done i always carried a couple of carrier bags and a couple of builders rubble sacks just in case of a ripped coat at least then all you have to do is cut a hole for your head and arms and you have a very strong poncho also carry a wheelie bin liner as this will double up as a bivvy bag but keep on trekking as i still think you are nuts lol

You backpack the way we mere mortals backpack. I say this having just watched a similar channel to yours. The kit they had was extensive and expensive - their sleeping bag was $1600! My stuff is a real chaotic mix. My boots cost over £300, yet I still use the gas stove I used when I was only 10 years old. My cooking set is vintage. I use a hot tent; it is a pain until I pitch it. And , then, I AM lord of all I survey. And I'm not for changing. The performance of your MSR validates my choice. I'm really surprised that a tent that expensive performed that badly. That said, thanks for the video. It was so natural ( no fancy music and clever drone shots ) that I felt like I was camping, too. Roll on the next video.

    • @muddy_bootlaces

Awww thanks so much lovely, yeah, i invest in the good kit for night time, tent, sleeping bag and matt, but the rest is just a cobbled together mess of stuff I love. They don’t come in jazzy blues etc but I’d say the camelbak BFM 50l is a real shout for a new pack they are a bit pricey at between £250-£350 but some reason’s I’d put forward as to why it’s a perfect idea for a pack for you 1, it comes with a camelbak military spec 3l hydration bladder for free “worth about £50-£70” 2, the whole back straps and back plate is 100% adjustable so it will fit anyone of any size or shape including a removable waste strap that can be swapped for a more padded one if you wanted more or totally gone if you don’t use it 3, it’s made of lightweight cordura with ykk zip’s so it’s very non rip and more water resistant than most packs you can get for hiking but it’s not as heavy as most military day pack’s/burgans so will not add tonnage like some would but be strong “as it is made and used by military’s” 4, it’s a clam shell so makes life so simple to get stuff from the bottom in a rush it also has internal strap downs to keep everything secure and organizer pockets to keep your smalls admin in check 5, molle and strapping points on the outside are very handy for those extra bits or large bits 6, and last but not least 50l total internal capacity “minus 3l if you have the water bladder inside” but when it’s on it feels more like a 35l size 😅 hopefully you didn’t fall asleep with me waffling on but I honestly can’t speak highly enough of mine I have a few large day packs and Bergens and this is by far the most comfortable and really is a all situation lay out I got mine off Amazon but they can be found in plenty of places 😄 hope this helps and keep up the great videos always brings a smile to my face seeing your positivity shining 😁👌🏻

@@muddy_bootlaces I mostly use military ones as I’m not one for distance more the camp lol but it’s by far the lightest you remember the one Craig East Anglian has and the bush craft lad who came round some tours with you I have that as well “karrimor sf” the camelbak is about half the wight empty👍🏻 but for sure check it out there are quite a few reviews on TH-cam and if not you could even order it off Amazon be careful opening it see how it feels if not good Re pack it and send it back as a mistake order 😉😁👌🏻 but with how they made that back plate and how lite it is I honestly can’t see you not liking it as I said the only sting is the price 😅 I did feel a tightening in my chest and wallet when I got it 😅🤣🤦‍♂️ any way take care and can’t wait for your next video 😄

Well that was an unusual adventure , you handled it nicely though haha .
Proves my point of my standard practice to always bring a bivy and a lightweigt tarp just in case something goes wrong with your main shelter .
At the very least bring a bivy bag along ..
Ferrino makes some very nice lightweight ones that pack down to almost nothing and are inexpensive : "Ferrino Rider Pro Bivi" .(check em out if you are interested 😉 )
I'm new to your channel , so I'll be looking at more of your adventures in the coming days

One thought on your backpack. Could you send it to someone like Alpkit to repair? Cotswold Outdoor may offer a similar service. I know Alpkit will repair kit from any brand.
Don't get me wrong though, I'm all for new kit, most of the time! 😄

Aww thanks for the suggestion, as the bag was only £45 and I imagine the repair cost would be similar, Im either looking at buying it again, getting something new or seeing what I can do with some gorilla tape 🤣🤣

    • @WalksWithOlly
      @WalksWithOlly ปีที่แล้ว

@@muddy_bootlaces Gorilla Tape is always superior to regular duct tape! 😉 If you could set a higher budget for a replacement, you might find other brands will offer a bag that's lighter in weight than Mountain Warehouse... If you count grams! But there is a wide plethora of backpacks and brands out there! 😮

Broken kit means shopping time with a completely clear conscience! 😁😇
Unfortunately since hiking has become fashionable, the manufactures have taken full advantage to rip people off, whilst engaging in greenwashing to justify it.
I use Osprey packs and they fit my short (male) back well, but it's been 20 years since I bought them.
It looks like a straightforward, same again, from Frog Toggs ? Are they as good as people say ? I started off with Gore-Tex, quickly became disillusioned due to the lack of breathability, then switched to Paramo Analogy which only works when freshly reproofed 🙄
The Tors look like they were pooled and solidified lava, layered up over time ?
Do you ring in, to alert range control, if they've raised the flags whilst you're in the area ?
Noodles & pasta are the same - I do that too.

      @muddy_bootlaces  ปีที่แล้ว

Hey lovely, yeah I feel you with packs. Proba ly going for an osprey for durability! The moors were volcanic many, many, many years ago, so these are the granite left over. They're cool huh?!

Its pointless even opening a door when the humidity is like that, probably best off taking a bivvy bag to keep sleeping bag dry and a few dry bags for gear. Could have been worse Bigfoot might have paid you a visit, he did with me last week and stole all my food! He thinks he is a comedian, but he is about as funny as wasps up your bottom!

I think the problem was the condensation, you should have said no thanks to the condensation and it would have stayed away. Just shout really loud "condensation be gone" and it will be 100% successful. If after this you still see condensation, then you have failed the moisture gods and should instead turn to the dark arts. I don't want to get into that too much as it isn't something that should be taken lightly. But, there is all sorts of condensation-based dark arts guidance online. Try the shouting first and don't be disheartened if it doesn't work at first. Also if you take 2kg of self raising flour and a bottle of Crakd egg replacement, and fling it at the moisture on the tent, and then do vigorous exercise inside to get the temperature up, you can create tent sized Yorkshire puddings overnight. It takes some serious work, and again there is also guidance. I won't link it as I don't have the rights, but I think if you Google "yorkshire pudding tents" it's about 83 pages in. Thank you and good luck.

Omg this comment wins... The amount of messages saying it was the tent or how I pitched it or how I should have carried a backup system 10 miles across the moorland 😂 the air was 100% humidity, you can't beat that.. M but the Yorkshire tent pudding Recipie sounds lush, ill have too find that page 83 you say??
