  • We are going down under the surface in rivers and lakes, to watch a bunch of streamer flies from the fish's perspective. This underwater footage is filmed over a period of several years in different environments from fast flowing clearwater spring creeks, over slow flowing rivers to lakes of different clarity.
    Most of the flies in this film are also featured in tying sbs films on my TH-cam channel. You can find them on these links:

    You know you’re a fly geek when you get totally excited by electric guitar and underwater streamers! Haha! I loved it. My favorite is the Garthside. I wonder what the fishes favorite is??

      Thanks a lot for your feedback. And don't worry. You are perfectly sane. The people that I worry about, is the ones that doesn't get exited by electric guitar and underwater streamers ;0) And the favourite? Well... we'll never know what the fish think, but we'll probably never stop wondering. All the best, Michael :0)

    Watching the action of flies like this makes you a better a better tier and fisherman. One day last summer i hooked a fish on a droppered nymph . As it neared the net i caught sight of my point fly, a natural mink wrap. As the trout moved in the water the mink wrap pulsed and wriggled with each movement. Blew me away. I am inspired now to sit by my vice and experiment. Thank you

      Thanks a lot for your feedback David. Cool situation having a trout to work the point fly ;0) I get inspired as well, every time I watch flies swimming underwater. More of that stuff is in the pipeline. Tight lines, Michael :0)

    I honestly think the Weighted Bunny Leech wins this. Seeing the action it has underwater is very realistic when compared to how real leeches swim, as they swim in a jigging or zig zag motion. That coupled with the movement of the rabbit strip makes it an incredibly realistic pattern to me.

    Thanks Michael - excellent video! You are absolutely correct - how the fly looks in the vice is totally different than how it looks when being presented to the fish where they hunt. I tank-test all new patterns to confirm that they swim/fish right and have the correct profile before they earn a place in my fly boxes. Before chucking a fly way out yonder I spend a bit of time playing with the flies in shallow water to see what retrieves/speeds work best, how fast it sinks, etc. when the fly is attached to the leader. Surprises me that very few people do this. Cheers and tight lines! Hank

    To be honest, underwater shots of streamers don't seem realistic at all to me. Maybe that explains why I have trouble catching bass when fly fishing. I usually can catch more trout on my fly rod than my spinning rod, but I catch WAY more bass on my spinning rod vs the fly rod.

    • @MichaelJensensAngling
      @MichaelJensensAngling  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fair enough! I feel that streamer flies are realistic too, but hair jigs has got a bit more life in the water. Cheers, Michael :0)

    To be honest I dont think all the little details make all that much difference. I mainly fish for trout and smallmouth bass and they normally smack streamers within seconds of them entering the water. Finding the general size and color and depth they are at on any given day is what really matters. A wooly bugger or zonker (simple ties) work better than any of these fancy articulated flies and cast much easier. Just my experience of course.

    • @MichaelJensensAngling
      @MichaelJensensAngling  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike, I agree: Size, color and depth is crucial. And bugginess and life matters more than bells and whistles. Tight lines, Michael :0)

    • @skorflyfishing
      @skorflyfishing 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you are generally right. It doesn't hurt that your fly choices, (Buggers and Zonkers) are some of the best most proven flies ever created. The only times the "bells and whistles" or what I term, "realism" matters is when the waters you fish are heavily pressured, and/or very clear, and/or the fish are keyed in on a specific feature of their forage food.
      For the most part, size, color, depth, and movement are key. some realistic flies look great, but are stiff and have no movement.
      Another key is function. For instance the sneaker fly in this video does a great job when fish are in heavy brush. Most of the other flies wouldn't work at all without a weed guard, and still wouldn't work as well even with a weed guard tied in. Sometimes I call weed guards "fish guards" because I have seen the strike to hookup ratio drop dramatically.
      Anyway, I loved seeing how each of these flies moved in the water. That info is very helpful.
