  • I was out in my Jeep when there was a lady broken down a few miles from my house. So I hooked a chain on her car and towed her to her home. She asked what I do for a living and I told her electrician, but I work on cars as a hobby. Her and her husband had electrical problems and when i started to work on that, she mentioned this old Cadillac in her garage. You just never know what you will find.

    You're going to love working on this. Just be sure to keep an iron grip on everything you disassemble, because you only want to replace what you can't fix. And the second you tell some parts guys you've got a '63 Cadillac, they'll try to sell you everything under the Sun. But most importantly, buy the strongest jackstands you can get: this old girl is heavy. Have fun!🙂

    The reason the windows and other things doesnt work at the moment could b cause of not having the ignition turned to the on position. I'm prolly completly wrong, but thats what I'm guessing. I dnt no if Cadillacs of tht yr required a chip n the key like they do now or not. I no very very little bout vehicles but do no a tiny bit. Would love to learn.
    I am so stoked to watch this series. Its gonna b a gr8 one for me as I am a Cadillac fan. I've owned a couple and my mom owned quite a few. Cnt wait till u tke it for a short drive before u tear n to the engine and rebuild it. This will b an absolute gorgeous Sunday driver. Again, I am jealous. Wish I could come across something this beautiful. Keep up the gr8 work and ur channel will blow up before long.

    Nice car! I wouldn't worry too much about those drum brakes. A good service will get those working just fine. (remember, big heavy semi trucks also use drum brakes!)
    The real things to worry about are OLD HARD TIRES (=no GRIP), perished flexhoses in the brake system and OLD BRAKE FLUID. If you get all that sorted those drum brakes can be made to work just fine.

    Very nice Cadillac. I have a 1973 Cadillac Sedan Deville and absolutely love it. Do not get in a big hurry to rebuild the engine. Give it a good tune up. Spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor. Change the oil and drive it easy and see how it runs. Car that have sat for a long time will almost always smoke for a while. If it does not quite blowing blue smoke it might have a broken piston ring.

    Brian that '63 Caddy is a boatload of awesome!!!!☆☆☆☆☆ if that really only has +/- 30k miles on her, then the only thing that can be wrong with the engine is the valve seals (which will cause the smoking) and the crankshaft seals (balancer and rear main).
    ●●☆☆☆VERY IMPORTANT ☆☆☆☆☆●●
    Since it is obviously not a recently (within the last 20 years) YOU MUST USE LEAD SUBSTITUTE IN THE FUEL!!!! The valve seats are NOT HARDENED SEATS, because the engine is PRE----UNLEADED FUEL!!!
    By using today's gasoline AND ENGINE OIL, YOU WILL DESTROY THE ENGINE!!!!!!!

    Also, on many GM cars of that era, unless the ignition switch was turned to the LOCK position and not just the OFF position, the switch can be turned to start the car even without the key in the ignition, Buick and Cadillac were well known for being able to be started without the keys by just turning the switch as if the key was in it.

    HI Brian sir, that 63 Cadillac is a beautiful car. And it looks all original which is great ! And I would keep it all ,original and don't change a thing ! Plus the year Cadillac with their own 390 V8 engine was a very good strong engine for power and alot of low end torque ! So it's good that you got it running ! I would just rebuilt that same engine as needed , and give the car a good cleaning and maintenance work . And I would also change the brake master cylinder to a dual brake master cylinder for safety !

    You'd be amazed how often people think a low mile engine is going to be in good condition. Often they are stuffed from doing very short runs and never getting to full temp, then leave it a few decades for the bores to rust up and you have an engine that needs a total rebuild like a high millage one.

    • @LunarOutlawsGarage
      @LunarOutlawsGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have seen a few people say that it will be fine just drive it. That is a great way for it to do irreparable damage to the engine. It doesn’t cost a lot to just go through the engine do a quick hone put new rings, gasket, seals, and a great paint job.

    Sometimes on these old engines, the rings are sticking some due to mild corrosion from moisture. On the first oil change, a bottle of Marvel Mystery oil helps free things up. Get it on the road and drive it few hundred miles, then another oil change might be all it needs. Also, the valve stem seals are most likely hard and dry. These are very cheap to buy, just need the valve spring tool. I would check these two things first before an engine rebuild. 👌

    • @robrobster9148
      @robrobster9148 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LunarOutlawsGarage Just to let you know that detonation is a timing issue. It does not mean at all you need to rebuild this engine with only 30K original miles. Check the (total) timing and bring it back to stock. You should be good to go. It would be a waist of time to open up a good engine if you want to go original anyway.

      @@LunarOutlawsGarage If it aint broke, dont fix it. too many times Ive seen people do it and end up with leaky main seals when it hadnt leaked before being replaced. Those old rope seals can be tricky toget to seal when you replace them with new production ones... Im not sure if its because the newer ones are a different quality or if it was installer error but if the originals arent leaking, dont mess with them.

      Hell no them miles r just the barely breaking n mileage. Shes got another good 150,000 to 200,000 to go possibly more if she is treated like a baby and treat her like a princess, BUT, I will agree with a previous comment from earlier. I would get her out and let her idol for a bit, mke sure all the gears r there and then take her for a drive and find u a good long spot and giver her the onions as VGG says. These other guys and gals r right. She just needs some special lube and some cleaner put n and drove some and again, give her the onions at least twice. Bein barely drove and by an older couple, im sure she is pretty full and needs emptied out.

      True however I took that gamble once and lost the engine and I’d hate to lose a numbers matching engine. A numbers matching Cadillac makes a difference between a $20,000 car and a $5000 car

      @@LunarOutlawsGarage I understand where your coming from and why u say tht. I've lost an engine and 2 trans and it was drove to church and grocery store weekly, so very little, but man when I did give her the onions, u name it, it came out the tail pipe. From black carbon to rust, to God only knows what else. I'm curious as to what would come out if you done it one time? Hmmm, we may never know but hopefully we might get a tease. Lol Again, I'm so jealous and cnt wait for this series to start.

    The engine smoking is more than likely stuck rings which can be fesolved in most cases without rebuilding the engine. spray the cylinders heavily with KROIL penetrating oil and leave it set for 24 hours then slowly turn the engine over with a breaker bar and listen closely because you will likely hear snapping/pinging sounds which will be the rings popping loose and get some of the KROIL that is made for use in engines as well and follow the directions and its very likely the oil smoke will stop once the engine is run and the KROIL is burnt ot of the cylinders. Ive done it this way many times successfully, even on engines that were locked tight for many years including my barn find 45K mile 57 Caddy that sat in a leaky garage for nearly 30 years and according to the previous owner it was stuck for at least 15 years before I bought it. I had the engine freed up and turning over great by day 3 and running smooth and smoke free after the rebuild kits for the carb and fuel pump finally arrived. It smoked for about 5 minutes then it cleared up and 2 owners later it still has not smoked again.

    How can the temp gauge work without any coolant? Nice find. Relax and let the engine run a while-with coolant, of course. She'll stop smoking.

    Put a new ignition switch or get a key made for the current one and I bet the rest of your accessories will work you said 36,000 miles on car are you sure if so try changing the oil with a full synthetic I’ll and add a V8 sized can of Restore that stuff I’ve tested it on many things and does what it claims it can do you may have a stuck ring by running it it will expand or the rubber valve umbrellas may have dried up witch is easy to replace by applying air pressure to the cylinder both valses closed remove spring it a lot cheaper and easier then motor replacement great find your a lucky man 👍

    valve seals are probably blown causing the smoke My first car was a 63 caddy the brakes were scary good chk the wiring on the d river door control for broken wires where the loom goes into the body . They were bad about breaking wires from opening and closing the dppr Oh be careful on parts that 390 engine is one year only it is different then others

    Funny I got 3 adds for Cadillac during this video. LOL I doubt that 120 is optimistic. My brothers 72 Caprice with a 400 small block would bury that 120mph speedo as fast as it would go past 80mph. Heck it would run over 80mph in 2nd gear!

    THE MOTOR DOES NOT NEED A REBUILD. Put new oil in it and run for 20 minutes and it will likely quit smoking. The rings will be ceased and this will free them. Will the car be for sale in the future?
