I just need to say, this is hands down one of the best channels on TH-cam. Greg your work is top notch and I’ve learned so much over the past few years. Thank you!
Hey Greg, during the pandemic, a lot of bars in my area survived by selling non perishable cocktails that were batched in mason jars or liter bottles or whatever was convenient. You should do a video on some non perishable batched cocktails you can just keep on the fridge and pour, I’d love to see your take on some of those.
When I was still bartending, I would always try to convince my regulars to at least try their go-to cocktails with a higher end spirit. A cocktail done with a topshelf bottle is like the acoustic version of your favorite hard rock song. You get to experience all of those ton3s and notes and chords with a drawn out. haunting quality that the original can drown out or fly right past. If you love a particular cocktail, you owe it to yourself to try it with topshelf Quality spirits, 100%.
Not gonna lie, there hasn't been an acoustic version that I've ever liked, I always find them to be rather crappy in my own opinion. Like a cheaper version of the original.
@@insertname7325 That's my man! The regular versions always seem to have so much more energy, but truth to be told I'm not the kind of person who searches for complexity in music.

I was in Hawaii recently and was able to actually get my hands on the original spirit used in the Halekulani, okolehao (a spirit made of cane sugar and ti root), and the difference between the bourbon and okolehao versions is mindblowing. Its a shame that okolehao is so hard to come by because the drink is vastly improved by it.
I don’t know what got me to watch this more, the fact that I watch all your videos, the fact that whiskey is my favorite, or the fact that your eyes are absolutely amazingly mesmerizing in that screengrab, and drew me in. “Oh sure, that drinks on fire. You know what else is? Greg’s eyes.”
love the show Greg!! One thing you said I'd argue with: i wouldn't say Maraschino tastes "absolutely nothing" like cherries. I would say that's accurate if you're specifically referring to those atomic red Maraschino cherries, but I actually think Maraschino liqueur has a really compelling, almost almond-cherry taste to it. It's the kind of funky, nutty cherry taste that I recommend everyone try because it works so brilliantly in cocktails. Anyways, just wanted to add my 2 cents here and say keep up the great work!
Luxardo has a very delicate and wonderful flavor. But I tried to save money by buying a cheap substitute and was greatly dismayed. It tasted like cherry cough syrup. Get the good stuff!
So when you decide to open your own bar, please realize that you will need enough acreage for the living accommodations to satisfy the legions of patrons willing to live adjacent to your establishment. Been a follower for years, and I am simply enthralled by so many of the cocktails you feature. You have a truly great channel my friend!
My favorite way of making a whiskey sour is exactly the way you do it, but I will put a few drops of lavender bitters on the foam because I just love the way that lavender plays with lemon!
This episode came out at the perfect time! (A bit of backstory first) I don't drink alcohol due to religious reasons, but before the pandemic I worked at a dinner theater where I was taught to mix drinks. I started watching this channel to understand the drinks better so I could better serve guests, and I fell in love with mixing the drinks and this channel. I have tried making my own mocktail variations on drinks, and I finally managed to get hold of a non-alcoholic bourbon this week! So now I will definitely try the latter two drinks and will see if I can find a way to do something similar to the first.
One of my favorites is called an Irish Rose: In a shaker over ice 1.5 oz. Irish Whiskey 2 teaspoons of lime juice dash of Grenadine strain into a stem glass garnish with a cherry Smells like heaven.
“bring them to the yard” the tasting notes are one of my favorite parts of every HTD episode 🤣 i hope i get to chill and have a IWC with Greg one day, i would LOVE to meet the guy!
Greg. I recently discovered your channel and I've been hooked every since. When I found out you are not a professional bartender, I was very surprised. You definitely have a breath and depth of knowledge of drink mixing that amazes me. And as a novice drink mixer, your educational and entertaining videos have help me a lot. Thank you for all your time and effort you put into your channel
That was an interesting cut during the whiskey sour pour where you had a second strainer and then it was just not their in the pouring shot. I had to double take on that
i'm loving the notes on screen this video, always a joy to see what is put on screen while greg drinks himself to paradise or in some cases hell. Great video!!
Cook's illustrated has an article about the effects of oxidation on the terpens in lemon juice and lime juice. According to them, letting these juices sit out for some period actually improves the flavor.
I’m a culinary student at my college, but you’ve really inspired me to get into mixology as well, I’m even planning on taking mixology classes at the next college I transfer to. I love your videos!!
My wife and I make a variation we call the "Elder Goose." It's our go to whiskey drink. 2-3 oz Rye .5-1 oz Benedictine 2 dashes orange bitters 1 bourbon aged maraschino cherry Orange peel garnish It is delicious if you are a fan of rye whiskey.
The whiskey sour and the Old fashioned are two of my favorite cocktails. I did not have the tiki drink but I love manhattans. The Strong the sweet and the aromatic hit you at the same time while being able to taste all of them. Plus I love vermouth(which I hope you'll do an episode on it soon). PS David Wondrich in his chapter on old fashioneds in Imbibe mentions a fantastic variation of one which uses applejack as the base spirit, made just the same as a whiskey old fashioned, but with a teaspoon of smith and cross. The second best drink I've ever had.
I made your Halekulani for the first time a few months back and wow I was blown away! The complexity and fun flavours are wonderful and a great entry in my opinion to whiskey cocktails!
I had THE best old fashioned and I've never gone back. It's a fat (butter) washed bourbon/ whiskey, some bitters, and toffee shards with coconut in it. I make my own toffee shards and buttered bourbon at home; this is my go-to drink!
I love whiskey sours. I recently acquired a 64.4 proof rye from Balcones as a store pick. Made a sour with it the other day and it was perfectly balanced, the sweet and tart didn't overpower the whiskey like what I think happens with some 80 proof whiskies.
Im definitely going to try that last one. One of my favorites is the whiskey smash! I usually swap simple syrup for maple syrup and it really blends well with the lemon and compliments the whiskey. I also have been topping it with some lemon Lacroix instead of regular soda. Ive been digging it!
I love that you call this out, Greg...using higher quality spirits in mixed drinks is usually way better. I've had high quality whiskey/bourbon/scotch and low quality whiskey/bourbon/scotch mixed with coke and I'll take the high quality every single day. One of my favorites is Glenfiddich 12/18 year scotch + coke...it's like a smokey, spicy cola that has a better balance vs. Jim Beam which just makes a sweeter, sugar-ier cola (like sweet tea...sweet cola?! gross). Who would even think that better ingredient's usually yields better results?!
Since it’s the middle of the year it’d be cool to see you do a season based episode of your favorite drinks for every season of the year. Spring - winter
So I decided to make an Improved Whiskey Cocktail for the first time today. I did the sazerac style absinthe rinse though. I love it. It is delightful and very well may be my new favorite bourbon cocktail. Thanks for the recommendation. I used Redemption Rye Bourbon in mine.
I've been experimenting with barrel aged maple syrup in whiskey drinks instead of simple syrup and i'm loving the flavor profiles. It's made me venture to things like agave nectar for margaritas and daquiris.
So... Ol grandad.... My favorite mixing bourbon. And I'm super glad you mentioned it! It is so complex, with so much potential. And depending on how you mix it, different flavors come and say hello!
Gonna try these. I ordered some bourbon and a slightly discounted bottle of Chivas Regal 12, all three mainly for sipping but i can spare a bit to try to level up my cocktail game.
Hey Greg, I have a video suggestion for you. I don't know if you're familiar with the band Alestorm, one of their songs "Pegleg Potion" describes some sort of weird cocktail and I thought you could try to make your own version of it. Some ingredients sound unusual in the song, but you made an actual drink starting from the concept of a bag of gas, so I don't think this would be a problem for you. Hope you make the Pegleg Potion one day. Cheers
Wow, a tiki cocktail in the top whiskey ones. What a surprise. Reminds me of one of the best cocktails i ever had in the limonadiere bar in berlin. Absolutely crazy with flamed rosemary. I like the whiskey sour best with Knob Creek small batch, but you are right a good rye gives extra points. Thanks for the video.
I like a New York sour over a standard whiskey sour. All you have to do is take a nice sweet red wine and float it after you pour the sour. Adds this nice pop of berry notes. Really good with a rye as the base.
I'm ngl I have never checked out Curiada because I thought for sure that we couldn't get liquor shipped to Ohio because of the laws. Decided to check it out on a whim and noticed I could in fact pick up some of the bottles from the show. Thanks for the website and opening up my eyes to a whole new world of alcohol.
I made whiskey sours with cherry bitters on the float. They were popular at the party but I still prefer ango for myself. I’ll have to give some creol bitters a try
I gotta agree with Jeff, the question of "what's your favorite cocktail" is highly nuanced. It depends on my mood, what I'm eating if anything, and probably other factors of which I am not even aware. My _drink_ of choice is scotch or bourbon, but neither of those is a cocktail. So when I do have a cocktail is is a break from my routine, and I'm usually looking for something a bit unlike either of those drinks. For me my number 1 go to I'm probably having a martini. I don't go for some of the wilder divergences from the norm, but there is a *huge* amount of space to be explored just by altering your vermouth and your gin. Seriously, just changing up the vermouth and keeping your gin the same you can enjoy a huge variety of different flavors in the same cocktail. I'd recommend to anyone looking to stock a serious bar that they have several different dry vermouth on hand. And you can blend your vermouth, or replace it entirely, with lillet, sherry, white wine, or even absinthe but you might want to go very light there. Second up is a Manhattan. Made with rye or a tamer bourbon than my standard Knob Creek 100 proof. Third is going to be a daiquiri. Possibly tied with a margarita. But the margarita needs to be made with good tequila, none of your rail quality Jose Cuervo. Use a solid reposado or an anejo. These drinks are just fun and full of flavor.
For me, my number one whiskey cocktail has got to be a Perfect Manhattan, but I appreciate that this is your list, not mine. You make a strong case for these and I think I'll be giving some of them a(nother) try. I did make an Earl Grey MarTEAni with tea infused bourbon instead of gin, and it grew on me. Perhaps I'll give that another go.
I found a drink recently called the Surf Liner, rye-based tiki-style drink: 1oz pineapple juice 3/4oz orgeat 3/4oz lemon juice 2oz rye 8-10 dashes Peychauds Shake and strain over cracked ice Thought it was pretty cool!
My go-to drink (as in - I make it at home) used to be the Old Fashioned, but I switched to the Manhattan after starting keto (less sugar). My neighborhood pub has a whiskey sour on the menu right now that has become my go-to when I'm out. Great drink! They also have a great tiki drink that I like - which is weird because I've never been into tiki drinks.
I’ve seen some mention of a man O’war cocktail which I have tried, it’s basically a whiskey side car with sweet vermouth instead of simple syrup or sugar. But my 3 of late have been old fashioned (3) whiskey side car or man o’war (2) and boulevardier which I can enjoy any day of the week, though it packs such a punch! Also if you like whiskey cocktails I highly recommend Irish whiskeys that can add an additional dimension (not Jameson though!)
I've discovered you today. Watched about 20 vids. Made about 10ish drinks and it may just be the alcohol but i feel the need to say that I love you and your my favorite ❤💕♥
I have to say, I tried the Halekulani Cocktail and I really like the balance with the barrel proof bourbon. I used Michters (sp?) Reminds me of a simpler hurricane without the complexity dark rum brings to the show. It is nice to find a tiki drink that has bourbon.
Hey Greg! We were hunting some new whiskey but instead found a really good espresso rum called Grind. We put it up against Mr Black and it’s really good but being a rum base…really good. Just thought I’d share.
Thanx Greg always big fan and u got me into making my own drinks. Gin Martini, old fashion, Dark and stormy which I'd new favorite and my favorite Whiskey sour.
The most phenomenal Whiskey Sour I've ever had was in a Warsaw 24 hour sports bar near the National Museum and the Polish Army Museum. All others I've tried since have been so underwhelming. :(
Learned about the Halekulani from your Tiki video and had been spreading the gospel of it as much as I could. Stoked to see it on your list of favorites because it's been on mine ever since!
Greg, if you like the Halekulani you should try the Iron Ranger cocktail. Recipe is in either the Modern Tiki or Simple Tiki book, I get those two mixed up. Regardless, it’s a fantastic whiskey based tiki drink. Cheers!
Would like to see you try the Schneemaß. It's a cocktail from germany. You need a beer mug (1l glas), fill corn schnapps to the first ring, (around 100 ml?) then add 2 scopes of vanilla ice cream and film the rest up with Fanta (or another orange soda). Then stir so the ice cream dissolves in the drink.
I know it's pretty basic, but my favorite whiskey (and by whiskey I mean bourbon or rye) cocktails are Boulevardier (with Rittenhouse, Carpano, and Campari), Whiskey Sour, and Sazerac in that order. If we're counting scotch, the Penicillin takes the crown and the other three go right below it
A whiskey sour is actually the only drink that I'll use Johnny Walker Red for. I had a bottle of it sitting on my home bar for ages, and couldn't find a way to enjoy it. Turns out it's pretty nice when it's muted by egg whites, sugar, and lemon.
Speaking of tiki whiskey cocktails, my favourite is the Port Light. Basically an augmented whiskey sour but one that is actually good instead of just being weird (I'm looking at you New York Sour).
Do pre-made mixer reviews! Things like pina colada, margarita etc. Ive also seen ones for old fashioned which makes very little sense considering how little besides whiskey goes in one but this is why we need your opinion!
I had a whiskey cocktail in Manchester that I haven't been able to find anywhere else called a Boilerbreaker, as it is a whiskey beer cocktail! But it doesn't use actual beer, it's made from a beer cordial and Jameson irish whiskey IPA edition, I have also found and bought single malt glenfiddich IPA which is experimental! It's then mixed with Wild Turkey rye and lemon juice, and I'm sure egg white/aquafaba because it's foamy like a whiskey sour but it's not listed in the ingredients. It is very unique and exactly what you would expect a sprit cocktail that tastes of beer to be like. If you could try to find out more about this cocktail and even make it on a future video that would be amazing, and you should definitely try it!

I just do my absinthe rinses with an atomizer
Yeah he's said he usually does that! But was probably trying to show another way
same here
I made whiskey sours with cherry bitters on the float. They were popular at the party but I still prefer ango for myself. I’ll have to give some creol bitters a try
My favorite is self created and is just essentially two shots in a row...jack with a jagermeister chaser, it’s called a jackknife and it’s awesome
I found a drink recently called the Surf Liner, rye-based tiki-style drink:
1oz pineapple juice
3/4oz orgeat
3/4oz lemon juice
2oz rye
8-10 dashes Peychauds
Shake and strain over cracked ice
Thought it was pretty cool!
When I saw "Bop It" flash on screen, I almost spit out my drink....I love the humor of whoever does post production...
Omg I'm so glad to see Noah's Mill on one of my cocktail channels! Such a good bourbon!!!
Amazing drinks as always! 100% agree that eggs are an absolute must in the sour.
I never heard of putting egg whites in a sour.
I now have to try it. And it better be life changing.
Try a whiskey sour with rhubarb bitters. It will blow your mind.
Ok, just made all 3 back to back to back. I’ve had whiskey sours before but the others we’re new to me. The Tiki drink is by far my fav!!!!
Best channel I've found in recent memory. Love your work Greg!
Whiskey sour is by far my favorite whiskey drink. Usually have one every night relaxing. Fantastic
I've discovered you today. Watched about 20 vids. Made about 10ish drinks and it may just be the alcohol but i feel the need to say that I love you and your my favorite ❤💕♥
Thank for the great content Greg, you deliver consistently amazing stuff 👏
Did you happen to try the barrel proof Jack? Not bad in my opinion
I have to say, I tried the Halekulani Cocktail and I really like the balance with the barrel proof bourbon. I used Michters (sp?) Reminds me of a simpler hurricane without the complexity dark rum brings to the show. It is nice to find a tiki drink that has bourbon.
Dude you need to give me some flavored Seltzer mix ideas... Aha/La Croix/Bubly/Polar etc (No sugar/no sweeteners preferably)
Just made this (whiskey sour) with Evan Williams black label. Got all of the tasting notes listed on a nice, cool, summer day.
Peychauds has very noticeable bubble gum or root beer notes. I love it!
I think the whiskey sour is what got me into cocktail makings. So so so good!
Great video! Glad to see you have help again behind the camera
Who else saw he missed the double strain on the close up lol? Love the vids
The most phenomenal Whiskey Sour I've ever had was in a Warsaw 24 hour sports bar near the National Museum and the Polish Army Museum. All others I've tried since have been so underwhelming. :(
It's fun watching Greg enjoy drinks.
Cannot recommend creole bitters on a whiskey sour enough! Tried it once because of you Greg and never went back!
Learned about the Halekulani from your Tiki video and had been spreading the gospel of it as much as I could. Stoked to see it on your list of favorites because it's been on mine ever since!
Using Bourbon totally makes sense in certain Tiki cocktails! Sounds so good 😊
I LOVE the Halekulani. Glad it's getting some attention.
I find Old Grand-Dad 114 makes a great Halekulani. I make mine with crushed ice.
I tried that halekulani one with basil Hayden whiskey and its still really good
Greg, if you like the Halekulani you should try the Iron Ranger cocktail.
Improved whiskey cocktail is my go to. On a side note, love the SKX007!
My top 3 in order from favourite to least favourite: whiskey sour, old fashioned, and manhattan
Speaking of tiki whiskey cocktails, my favourite is the Port Light. Basically an augmented whiskey sour but one that is actually good instead of just being weird (I'm looking at you New York Sour).
Do pre-made mixer reviews! Things like pina colada, margarita etc. Ive also seen ones for old fashioned which makes very little sense considering how little besides whiskey goes in one but this is why we need your opinion!
my fav whiskey cocktail is the Arnaud ... a great drink
I just made a whiskey sour with orange and a single malt scotch. Lowered the simple sugar to 1/3 and OMG
