I'm picturing your contractors stumbling onto this video later and being just... befuddled by this project. Like, "We - we could have found you some wood, ma'am. "
I am a prop maker and I am very proud of you! You wanted to turn your office intro a film set and you did. That is pretty much one way we would do wood. Here's a small tip if you want a more realistic wood paint job: Paint your thing orange/ochre first. Then mix up 50% semi-matt varnish, 40% water and 10% dark brown paint (ratios might be different depending on your paint and varnish but it does not need to be that accurate anyways). Mix way more than you think you will need. You can use a big brush, one of those you'd use for painting walls that always leaves the paint kind of "stripey". Apply very thin layers of your paint mix with that brush and leave it intentionally striped and uneven. Be aware of the direction of the wood. If you do 3-4 coats, it starts looking like a pretty realistic wood texture and it gives you a nice shine. If your paint is thick enough it will also add a tiny pit of texture.
@@indialee5223 Agreed. She was mimicking the dark, semi-gloss, almost charred look from the place she visited. Color wise she did an amazing job matching it. The original looked ruff hewn with a draw knife pulling only the bark away and leaving the natural shape of the timber behind. This would have required a thicker foam to duplicate the texture and appearance. Working with the time and materials she had available, this is fantastic work. Grab your ketchup and crunch away my friend.
Hah, that's just what I do on miniatures for terrain! Start with the base coat then do a different coloured wash to highlight the crevices, then if needed some drybrushing to highlight the surfaces :)
For anyone wanting to replicate this project in a rental or someplace you can't use nails, you can use the command strips as mentioned, but get the nail head appearance by getting those flat headed metal buttons and inserting them into the foam
A friend of mine has a darling old farmhouse with the most charming wooden beams on the kitchen ceiling. I was so surprised one day when I climbed up on their counter (like a crazy) to poke one and it was FOAM. They have since moved so this project makes me happy to remember that darling kitchen with the secret foam beams. 😂
This reminds me of my absolute favourite story about the Dresden Operahouse in East Germany: The building has an ENTIRE GALLERY with wooden panelling that, due to fire restrictions in the 19th century (yes) isn't actually wood at all! They had an army of artists paint plaster to look like wood. But, here's the great bit: by the time the bombed out opera was rebuilt after the war in the Eighties, they only found one guy in the GDR familiar with the technique, who was already in retirement. This absolute icon spent two years painting the panels in the reconstructed building, and was in his eighties by the time it was done!
As someone who constantly works on theatre sets (I’m painting so much bricks right now. I never want to see a brick again) you did so great. I might use this for a set at some point
PS - if anyone is thinking of using styrofoam, a word of warning that spray paint will melt it! So use any other type of paint! However, that melting is useful for creating a stone/brick effect ;)
considering the texture of styrofoam i don't think it's a good fit for a carving project like this anyway, but its good info to know! i've had my experiences with melting it with glue too ahaha
@@ladyethyme what rachel is using is called eva foam and it's a different kind of foam than styrofoam :) she also seals her foam before painting! (in this case with mod podge)
My Grandfather had a Housepainting business, and when he had finished a project he always painted his Name and the Date somewhere. That would be nice in your Office too: ~Rachel March 2022~
Quote! It was a normal habit where I live up in the mountains to add at the top of the house in the highest wood beam at least the capital letters of the owner and the year the work was finished. Nowadays still it allows to know when ancient houses were built.
I used to work in an Tudor house in the English countryside, there was one pane of glass in one room where craftsman who had repaired the building would scratch their names in. There were names and little poems from the 1800s there! It was always my favorite spot int he building.
My grandmother had similar beams of foam in her house and would get super mad when my siblings and I would push/throw pencils into them XD I'm so glad you're finally starting to make yourself at home, these videos are great.
I grew up in the 60's watching 'Dark Shadows' every day after school. From that experience I was left with the belief that every home must be decorated to look like a gothic soap opera set on a budget. You are my (much younger) soul sister Rachel.
Rachel, when I got my house I painted my bedroom lavender for one reason and only one reason: because when I was 10, my mom wouldn't let me have a lavender bedroom and made me have a pink one instead because "nothing goes with lavender." Then after about 5 years, I got it repainted because I had adequately proved my point and totally not because I was very tired of a lavender bedroom.
Growing up, my older sisters painted their room 2 opposite walls lavender and the other 2 a very complimentary pale yellow. Looked FAB! I painted mine BRIGHT yellow lol.
My parents let me paint my room tie-dye... It was a lot of fun, but ADULT me cries at how bright the room is every time I go home. I almost wish my parents talked me out of that.
My college tech director always told us. “Don’t sweat the details. If they (the audience) can’t see it from 20 feet on a running horse, it’s a detail.” That being said, that’s some mighty fine craftsmanship there. Working with foam in this way is not near as easy as you make it look. There is true artistry in making the man made look organic. Using a Dremel is a different technique than the hot knife or soldering iron we used in college to make “timber’s”. I’m not sure if you switched tips at any point, but either way, nicely done. And most importantly, it makes you happy. So, it’s a bonus that it makes me happy too. Grab your ketchup and crunch away my friend.
Rachel, I just wanna say that you have grown so much as a TH-camr. You’re presence is so strong, your editing so good, your ideas so fun, I NEVER get bored of your videos and honestly I fricken love you 😂 I remember after you went full time TH-cam, it was stressful for you and honestly would be for me too but fear not, you’re doing fricking amazing sweetie. Exceeds all expectations and finally thank you for sticking in there because…life is a little sweeter, sillier, nerdier with you in it. Xxx
hey could you tell me around what time did she started full time with youtube? i was just watching a bunch of old videos and she was still talking about her job and hoping youtube will become a full job one day so i was curious to know when that happened! super happy for her!
I love seeing you making your home your own. Plus I love seeing how you are doing it. I am glad you just go for it. I get stuck in the "I want to do something but what if I mess it up" so I don't do anything. So I am living vicariously through your home renovations. Thanks for all your videos.
I've found that I'm doing a lot better creation wise if I accept from the beginning that the first attempt is going to be lacking in some way but I usually nail it on the second. Just go for it!
It's a rainy Saturday. I'm snuggled up with a grandpa sweater and a coffee, watching Rachel do some wildly impractical project instead of working on practical things. Definitely the way to spend such a morning!
I always find it so funny that this type of beam design isn’t common in other parts of the world. We have it all over England, however some landlords (my old one) cover them all up so you just have big square chunks poking out of the wall. Still I adore them and wish that I could afford an old English cottage with original beams… one day x P.S love the video you fantastic goblin x
I saw a video about a garrett apartment in Paris that had a mid-century (not in the good way) suspended acoustic ceiling in rough shape. They took out the drop ceiling, and revealed gorgeous hand-hewn beams! Seems so ridiculuos that they had been covered up!
I have the covered up version of these beams. Not a super fan of the cover job, but not bothered enough to dig under the sheet rock to see if they're aesthetically pleasing.
@@ms.chuckfu1088 It is totally a French thing too. Check out houses in Strasbourg or Bayonne cities for example, or in Paris. Three cities which are at opposed sides of France.
Girl, I've spent the last year in a post-MAJOR bypass surgery depression compounded by a lifetime of anxiety, kinda coming out of it now, and you've SO inspired me to get cracking on further and more fun deco projects on our old farmhouse ;-) I can't tell you how much I LOVE your channel! No matter what you post, you're always entertaining and inspiring. xx
My dear, creating has such a powerful calming and healing function that saved most of the worst moment of my life. Unfortunately I'ma bit hyperactive so try to imagine the never ending list of "to be done " things I have 😉😂. And my house is full of materials to be recycled, paints, tools....if there is something to be done I've got everything somewhere. But concentrating some hours on something specific is a blessing to our souls and minds and me too, I love to watch Rachel's videos as it is like I'm doing something too, following the entire creation or construction of something.
@@serenafardin7441 Same. Plus chronic pain. So I will just enjoy someone else's hands doing that work, thanks. :) Rachel is a delight! Never met a Rachel video I didn't love.
Awesome girl! I am a carpenter and I didn’t look away. The only thing I would add structurally to your beams would be on any corner the beam would show on both sides. Love it!
Yes! After living in England, that was the one thing that made me go “wait, what?” So hopefully when she does the rest of the room, she’ll add that beam bit.
When using Mod Podge to seal an item, I've found that you can mix in a bit of oil paint to make it whatever color you want. I've sealed wood, foam, and leather that way, and it always come out perfect. Burnt sienna and black oil paints mixed with mod podge can turn plain craft woods from Michael's into fancy oak looking pieces.
As an architect, you should "finish" the edge on the other side and under the roof. Then it should look very realistic 😉 You should see the "beam" from both sides not just one.
On film sets, we make almost everything out of many kinds of foam, so you're right in line with the professional methods. Frankly I might need to do this to my kitchen!
not me taking notes in my completely stripped 1840's house haha poor gal was totally 'remodeled' in the 1970's, which meant gutted and most all the original features ripped out. we still have beautiful trim, moulding, window framing, gothic windows, an original chandelier, original flooring, and behind plaster and drywall three gorgeous fireplaces (old owner had photos, he didn't want to bother putting in liners to the chimneys). so....my study is probably going to have these, whilst I wait for various permits. thank you Rachel! these turned out amazing!
Lucky duck. The only things in our 1864 house that survived the mid-70s “remuddle” were an interior door and some 1930s wallpaper in one of the upstairs closets. It’s sickening.
@@ms.chuckfu1088 The reality is horrible. Horrible. Everything is the cheapest builder-grade, but THIS IS THE YEAR we’re changing that. (Unless we get locked down again. Heaven forbid)
I feel you on literally hiding until a working crew leaves, the only way I’ve gotten over it is working in an industry where I’m often working alongside movers/carpenters/painters/etc. I will let you know those guys don’t give a crap lol, they’re just there to get the job done and leave. They will probably ignore you as hard as you ignore them if you pass through 🙃 edit: but if you initiate conversation laborers are often very kind and sociable! I’m just saying they’re (usually) respectful and understand they’re kinda intruding on personal space while they’re there
I never would have thought of just...adding beams to a wall? Though I don't know that I would use foam, were I ever to do this, I still don't think it ever would have crossed my mind that I could make a plain wall cute and cottagey by adding beams that weren't originally there! Such a cute idea, I'll have to keep it in mind for my future home.
You had me at "broke writer in 1800's Paris' apartment", I am all for this aesthetic and you did not disappoint! What a clever idea and it looks fantastic! I think you met and beat the challenge, they turned out great.
My great-grandfather was an artist and builder around WWI and one of his specialties was faux-wood paneling so... you have my respect and admiration, as usual!
Speaking of needing a whimsical space, I lived in shitty old college housing for 2 years. it was a beautiful turn of the century home, just unfortunately not well kept up. There were cracks all over the walls and ceiling in my bedroom so i got some fake ivy from amazon and just used scotch tape and followed along the cracks with the ivy. It actually looked pretty cool lmao
@Niphyra there were constantly problems in the house and it absolutely sucked in the winter but i truly made it a beautiful space. The one thing i will have in every space i live for the rest of my life is a sun catcher. Put even a small one in a sunny window and the entire room is full of rainbows. also fun for cats lol
I LOVE this idea! My dreams of living in a medieval tavern will soon be realized! I think I figured out why your beams were too short on one wall though; when you heat seal it, it shrinks. Makes it tricky to actually measure 😅
rachel: "as an adult, you can do whatever you want...." me: 3am in the netherlands, i came home from a party where I just drank beer and talked about politics with some random guy, and now I'm eating chocolate cake in my kitchen: "yes!" rachel: "....when it comes to decoration"
It's not just you. When I was 13 I convinced my dad to paint knee high grass on all of my walls because I thought that would be cool. Ofc I also got a green carpet.
It's so freeing seeing Rachel have fun with decorating and remodeling, and making the house fit for her and her family, like ❤️ it's really inspiring, seeing a creative adult not scared of making their living space unique and actually fun to live in!
it looks really fun to do. love when people make their houses different from the usual ones. yes we can decorate with pictures, furniture etc but does not feel as fun and unique. so really loved this one, and look forward to / hope for, more house updates in the future.
Ahh this looks SO good. You're giving me major Ariel in her human form in a little French village (French?...) with the cool old architecture - like when she and Eric went on that date to the village. I don't think that sentence made sense but I love the makeover.
I totally agree with your comments about how projects don't always need to make sense or be realistic or be the most efficient way, and so on. It's really nice just to do things your own way, for the aesthetic, figuring things out as you go along. I love doing things in a "non-optimized" way. And yeah, it's your space!
I really love how they turned out. It makes me think of a fairytale cottage, especially with all the plants in your office. They really turned out great i think the cost of acrylic really made the look.
I LOVE this. I prefer this style over real wood. I feel like it gives it more whimsy and more character...and just makes it look more fantastical and storybook! Growing up I always wanted my room to look like a prop house/set...still do I actually 😊
the frantic running to check if frodo ate your tacos is me anytime i hear my dogs make a noise outside my room. also, so so looking forward to seeing you decorate the whole house!!
Honestly most trim work on theatre sets is just pink board insulation foam painted with latex paint. We don’t usually carve the wood grain in because it’s meant to be seen from a distance. Rubber wood grain tools are the best for making wood realistic texture, but a good dry brush does just fine too. For something like this (interior decoration/film) the carved wood texture was perfection. Excellent work Rachel- we all love it!
This reminded me of when we bought a restaurant with a wood beamed structure that covered the ceiling of the bar area. For Halloween, we decorated the place up and that is when I discovered that the beams on either end of the structure were not wood but very thick pieces of foam, painted to look like wood! I could lift them with one finger and they were 5" thick square pieces that were 6' long! You can imagine my surprise...They were very convincing, just like yours. Congratulations on making this office space truly yours. I hope that the workman have quieted down some by now!! Hugs
Such a fun way to make your room a fantasy set! Also the way you said “draw-rings” at one point really transported me back to warm fuzzy childhood memories of my Bostonian daycare teacher Linda ✨🧡✨. Love your video as always!
Rachel that looks friggen amazing!!! Years ago I toured some wealthy robber barrens house here in Florida and the tour guide said that much of the fancy marble was faux painted. So you're just doing what people have been doing for years and putting your own twist on it! Love your videos!!!
That looks so good! I would highly recommend painting the window frame/ crossy wood bits either black or brown to match the faux wood and match the vibe.
MATERIALS: MDF strips would make a practical alternaticve to foam if you just prefer "other.". It's already in the shape of beams and has weak wood grain, but you can still do a custom surface treatment. Thanks for this idea Rachel. I've been toying with it for one of my two rooms.
i was skeptical at the beginning and this did bring me back to when i watched nerdforge building a whole fucking room out of foam and forming every wooden plank. i though "why not just build it out of good functional and long lasting materials to begin with" but (!) that changed when i stoped thinking about it as a fake room / fake beam and instead as props! because they are props! i love movies and speical effects and honestly having little beam-props on your walls is kinda really cool. also they turned out really good. they look like they are supposed to be on that wall and i wouldnt question them one second if i entered that room
One of my all time favorite movie bedrooms is the one from “Penelope” with Christina Ricci. More whimsical than English tavern but I feel like it would fit your Alice in a wonderland vibe
Dang, Girl! You could work for Disneyland! I love how you just whip out your Dremel and make foam look like wood. This kind of artistic talent is amazing to watch. Thanks for letting us in!
This reminds me of our den in the house I grew up in. My parents got these thick foam beams that looked like wood on our ceiling. They were literally Styrofoam. You inspire me so much with your decor. I did my own sunroom last year inspired by yours complete with a victorian sofa that I found at a thrift store. Thank you for all that you do to make me happy and creative! ❤️
I'm an interior design student but I got into it from a love it sets and theater and I LOOOOOVE this diy half-timber Tudor look. I think it looks fantastic!

Rachel said reveal, TH-cam said ad time! Also! Just got hit with an amazing idea to twist this! I have a room specifically for my cats, also a perk of being an adult and having a house, and I love this beam idea. But instead of painting it to look like wood, I think I wanna look into covering the foam with carpet to make beam/scratching posts along the walls for my cats!

“I will look a little different.” The only two options are: slightly trims her bangs so as to be barely perceptible and really let the “little” in a “a little different” do the heavy lifting, or… Drastic hair cut with blue dye job, facial tattoos and piercings, and decked out in loud rainbow clothing with lots of sequins and crystals sewn in. Those are the only possibilities.
She was really excited about the dark brown Wonder Woman wig, so I thought she might dye her hair that colour? I'm not sure though. It would still be a drastic change though!
As someone who likes D&D and would love to have a room to play D&D with friends at home someday... You just gave me an amazing way to do it and I thank you very much ✨ Also if you want to get rid of the shine of spray, I usually use baby powder when I do fake swords! This was such an incredible idea! I'm in love with how it turned out. I always need a theme before I decorate a room as well. So far, I've got a Witchy Magical Library, a Mediterranean Cottage Kitchen, and a Nautical Deep Sea Bedroom. Next up, an Enchanted Fairy Cave office/bedroom. I love your videos because they provide the perfect inspiration for many of my own projects!
@@Thelmageddon I made a video about my magical library a few months ago, and I’ll definitely make a few about my enchanted fairy cave office once I get started on that project too! :)
This is such a cute idea! It turned out great and who cares if it makes sense structurally because it looks so good! I kind of want to do this in my house now, I love those exposed beams.
For inspiration look up "Fachwerkhaus", that's exactly how really old houses were build in Germany. Esslingen am Neckar is a whole town that still pretty much looks like this, very medieval.
If it makes you happy that is the most important thing rather than worrying about whether or not the beams make sense architecturally. Frankly we all need a distraction these days as the stress and anxiety levels go up people are easily triggered. So I thank you for sharing your work and video with us.

The fact you are having fun is addicting and inspiring. Never thought of this idea to wear vintage style clothes hair makeup etc and loving your take on it. The sewing - ok well I have done but it was a pain I thought. You have inspired me to rethink that. Basically lighten up and have fun with your projects and be bold and brave! I shared your story, and now I have inspired my 32 yr. old daughter in law to get back into sewing and also my 71 yr. old sister as well. She called today and said she got fired up to go unearth her sewing stuff as she realized that used to make her happy. I’m 67. So you are touching all ages! I have been loving all of your subjects Rachel. Also your videography skills are fantastic. Love the shorts. Thanks for entertaining and the inspiration!
The construction sounds were like the soundtrack to the video. The one when you said your mom wouldn't let you decorate your room like Alice and Wonderland (1:35) sounds like a buzzer from a game show at the end of a timed round and the one after the dilemma with the foam(12:40) sounds like the trombone effect when something doesn't go right in an old tv show. Watching your idea come to life was cool.

No judgment here just love for your creativity and repurposing what you have ! Definitely use that wood scavenged from the kitchen most of it could be as old as our grandparents!

I LOVE EXPOSED BEAMS and I dream of someday having a room with a reading nook/window seat and exposed beams because #hygge ...But I'm broke, so the foam option is looking like a much more viable option! And you know what, I could probably make a window seat with ikea bookshelves. Cause this housing market is crazy. Anyways, thanks!!
I have always wanted a windowseat!! Our windows are inset about 12” so I used to sit in them when I was a kid. When I got bigger I took a really sturdy desk and slid it up the window and covered it with pillows. It made a lovely poor woman’s windowseat. ^_^

I love that show! Do u remember the boom mike dropping into the shot? Or when someone would knock on a door and the wall would shake 😂😂

Disneyland has a lot of foam-like “wood” hand rails, especially in fantasyland and it all looks great. This looks really good!
Yes! The beams before you applied the acrylic paint distinctly reminded me of DISNEY WOOD. And therefore made me giddy and cheerful. 😀
im so glad i wasnt the only one to think of disney sets!
i was also reminded of disneyland! and silverwood which is another theme park that has a fake old-timey main street
Haha, I was thinking the exact same thing.
In the Efteling theme park too!
i really like the texture of the foam, gives the “wood” a stylized video game feel which is pretty cute
that's a pretty specific description but I totally agree with it
Rachel, when I got my house I painted my bedroom lavender for one reason and only one reason: because when I was 10, my mom wouldn't let me have a lavender bedroom and made me have a pink one instead because "nothing goes with lavender." Then after about 5 years, I got it repainted because I had adequately proved my point and totally not because I was very tired of a lavender bedroom.
I had a lavender room for like seven years, I agree with your point, your mom was wrong (but I repainted mine too, shh😂)
My grandma wouldn’t let me paint my room lavender either! She said it was a depressing colour but I did it anyway and it’s beautiful ^-^
ive never had any other colour than whites (not able to paint in rented) but i can imagine more things going with lavender instead of pink....
If they (the audience) can’t see it from 20 feet on a running horse, it’s a detail.”
That being said, that’s some mighty fine craftsmanship there.
Grab your ketchup and crunch away my friend.
oh good to know it's not just my costumers that say "20ft and running" when trying to decide how important the details are haha

I've found that I'm doing a lot better creation wise if I accept from the beginning that the first attempt is going to be lacking in some way but I usually nail it on the second. Just go for it!
Either that or maniacally starting something with without proper research and realizing way too late, you're in way over your head...😅

I always find it so funny that this type of beam design isn’t common in other parts of the world. We have it all over England, however some landlords (my old one) cover them all up so you just have big square chunks poking out of the wall. Still I adore them and wish that I could afford an old English cottage with original beams… one day x
P.S love the video you fantastic goblin x
I saw a video about a garrett apartment in Paris that had a mid-century (not in the good way) suspended acoustic ceiling in rough shape. They took out the drop ceiling, and revealed gorgeous hand-hewn beams! Seems so ridiculuos that they had been covered up!
I have the covered up version of these beams. Not a super fan of the cover job, but not bothered enough to dig under the sheet rock to see if they're aesthetically pleasing.
its a very common thing in germany too, there is a lot of old half-timbered houses all over the place
@@ms.chuckfu1088 It is totally a French thing too. Check out houses in Strasbourg or Bayonne cities for example, or in Paris. Three cities which are at opposed sides of France.
I think it's a medieval building technique, and we don't go back that far in the US lol

Was also thinking this! Because the rest of it makes sense to me :)
Yes agreed!
Was going to comment that!
Yes this is the one part that bothered me, otherwise honestly it was impressively realistic!
On film sets, we make almost everything out of many kinds of foam, so you're right in line with the professional methods. Frankly I might need to do this to my kitchen!
not me taking notes in my completely stripped 1840's house haha
poor gal was totally 'remodeled' in the 1970's, which meant gutted and most all the original features ripped out. we still have beautiful trim, moulding, window framing, gothic windows, an original chandelier, original flooring, and behind plaster and drywall three gorgeous fireplaces (old owner had photos, he didn't want to bother putting in liners to the chimneys). so....my study is probably going to have these, whilst I wait for various permits. thank you Rachel! these turned out amazing!
Lucky duck. The only things in our 1864 house that survived the mid-70s “remuddle” were an interior door and some 1930s wallpaper in one of the upstairs closets. It’s sickening.

I LOVE this idea! My dreams of living in a medieval tavern will soon be realized!
I think I figured out why your beams were too short on one wall though; when you heat seal it, it shrinks. Makes it tricky to actually measure 😅

I totally agree with your comments about how projects don't always need to make sense or be realistic or be the most efficient way, and so on. the frantic running to check if frodo ate your tacos is me anytime i hear my dogs make a noise outside my room. also, so so looking forward to seeing you decorate the whole house!!
Bonus for filming: the foam can act as soundproofing 😊
Rachel that looks friggen amazing!!! Years ago I toured some wealthy robber barrens house here in Florida and the tour guide said that much of the fancy marble was faux painted. So you're just doing what people have been doing for years and putting your own twist on it! Love your videos!!!
Looks great! Definitely gives it an "immersive D&D gaming room" feel.
Great idea, and then you have the wood smell to accompany it as well.
That's actually a great idea!
i was skeptical at the beginning and this did bring me back to when i watched nerdforge building a whole fucking room out of foam and forming every wooden plank. i though "why not just build it out of good functional and long lasting materials to begin with" but (!) that changed when i stoped thinking about it as a fake room / fake beam and instead as props! because they are props! i love movies and speical effects and honestly having little beam-props on your walls is kinda really cool. also they turned out really good. they look like they are supposed to be on that wall and i wouldnt question them one second if i entered that room
This turned out so cool! It really adds a lot of character to the room. A reflection of its owner. Can't wait to see what's next.
