    Also watch what you put IN your bodies. High amounts of sugars, high gluten, high starches and fried foods will have a negative affect on the hair even if you put the right products ON your hair. Eat your dark green veggies (lightly cooked and raw) eat QUALITY proteins and drink plenty of water. Your hair will thrive. Discipline.

      THIS!!! I eat more healthy fats and protein and don't feel the need to give my hair a protein treatment. I don't stress my hair either with heat or excessive styling. I've been eating clean for years, but started to consume the Ayurveda-related herbs that can be eaten. My new growth is softer, the texture has improved.

    1) Bi-weekly/weekly hair analysis.
    Dry, brittle, hydrated, matted etc?
    2) Be aware of ingredients in the products you put in your hair. Note back to #1. What is working? What is not working for your hair?
    3) Do not neglect your hair while Protective styling. Re-moisturize often if twisted or braided
    4) Accept your hair for what it is. Embrace it. Treat your hair well. It is a representation of you and your prideful bloodline 💕

      @@susandejohnette6409 If it didn't work for you sorry but that statement isn't true for all. I'm almost waist length for the third time in 12 years and I basically live in protective and low manipulation hairstyles. You just have to listen to your hair and do what works for you.

    • @nicholeh1280
      @nicholeh1280 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I agree there is a lot of garbage under the "protective" umbrella. You have to be smart and know your hair. Protective should mean don't add extra weight to your roots with added hair, don't add unnecessary tension to your roots with tight braiding, buns, ponytails. Protective style doesn't give you a green light to not moisturize and take good care of your scalp or ignore your ends.

      @@nicholeh1280 The misinformation about protective styling is coming from those who don't actually understand you have to still take care of your hair in a protective style. I am like you I wear twist , cornrows and wigs 90 percent of the time and my hair thrives in a protective style. I do the same with my two daughters. My 8 year old hair is waist length, thick type 4b4c hair. My 4 year old is near mbl length type 4b hair. They live in twist and braids. I've helped many other natural ladies grow their hair longer using protective styling and natural hair care. I had a recently call me and thanked me. It's a challenge to wait longer than 7 days to wash but I only figured that out because my scalp responds better to a Scalp Scrub+Shampoo combination. I focused on moisture retention by first doing regular conditioner washing. I don’t leave any conditioner in my hair I rinse it out, then apply only oil. Now , that my hair is soft and hydrated, I am back with two strand twists and headwrapping. I’ve completely weaned myself off of commercial hair products! At first I didn't take reading ingredients seriously but now I do even to what I consume.🥘🍵🍹🍴 My hair and nails have become healthier. It's funny how protective styling has hit overdrive in our natural hair community. Smh. Any style that doesn't allow you to use WATER 💦💦💦 on your hair and scalp isn't worth it. We bath with water and not just products. When we are thirsty we drink water not juice. Moisturize your hair people. Water + ur product ( oil, moisturizer, etc.)

    So true you make excellent points as always!. I've never done box braids for two reasons: 1. No patience to sit and get them done and even less to attempt to do them myself. 2. I knew I could never take care of my hair with them in. It was important for me to know myself and that protective styles of that nature were not for me no matter how many other naturals did them or how beautiful I thought they were.

      @@NaeNay. I usually do medium to big sizes. Never mini twists. Stay away from mini hairstyles. And I use the braid in method. My sister installs them for me. Then I keep them in for two months while applying my growth oil twice a week.
      To take them down I apply mega growth leave in to the roots (it has crazy slip) and length of the hair and take them down gently. I usually take my sweet time doing it to avoid breakage. That's how I retain length with my fragile hair

      It could be dryness and over manipulation perharps how you handle your hair, also look at the ends of your hair, do you need a trim? You can also use an oil ater moisturizing to help lubricate your strands so they don't rub against each other as much and tangle. Protect your hair from the wind and try to strech out your hair with like bantu knots, blow dry etc...

      Take a deep breath. 🧘🏽‍♀️ Now take a look at your products. Keep the ones your hair likes and discard the rest. Listen to your hair, dust your ends when needed ✂️✂️, nourish your scalp and body, let your scalp breath, air dry your hair more (this keeps the strength of your strands), embrace shrinkage and keep your hair stretched in a comfortable style for your hair and scalp. 😘
