Whatever you think about prem refereeing, its impressive to see how well Howard articulated answers to those questions for over an hour. They were all technical and difficult to answer, and he took every one of them. Seems like a decent, honest bloke

The main issue I have at the moment is “mate” - Webb kept saying don’t want to throw Mate under the bus. Other ex refs have said didn’t want to overturn at VAR due to mate. VAR needs to have specialists that are just VAR and not connected to the refs on the field
100%. They need to make an independent decision. In the instance it's a penalty call that the ref missed, they need to call the ref over to review, the ref will still have the ultimate power to overturn var

What they say doesn't even make sense. If my mate made a mistake I would help him and sent him to var so he corrects himself and then people wouldn't moan but just because they ignore the mistakes then the ref gets all the criticism. They are adding pressure to their mates themselves instead of protecting them
Well spoken, yes. However, you cannot overlook that broadcasters are covering inconsistencies in referees decisions and not critiquing them. The same issues are ever present each season. This likeable chap and his incompetent group of ‘mates’ are destroying your leagues reputation. Such issues are not overly present in other leagues. Wonder why…

Making referees more relatable is definitely a move forward! Admitting mistakes, recognising mistakes will happen, and explaining how rules are applied. Especially the yellow card difference in Rice/Trossard vs Szoboszlai occasions. Not everyone will agree, but the explanation needs to be given. In a relatable, simple way. 💯
As a life long United supporter I've always liked Gary but his media carreer and, more specifically, bringing something like "The Overlap" and now the "Stick to football" podcast to life has got to be his biggest achievement. This is so much fun and an insight we just can't get anywhere else. Please keep it up because it is a gem. Cheers.

Really don’t get why VAR isn’t like video ref in rugby league. It’s clean it’s clear to the fans in the stadium and those at home , voice commentary of the decision making process so we understand what they are looking for. Why is VAR so so mechanical and cold?

Ex players saying “we don’t want to see yellow/red cards for kicking the ball away”, but for once Howard’s got it right with “just don’t kick the ball away”. Also more need to be done with goalkeeper time wasting. I disagree with Howard’s viewpoint of ‘judge the decisions by the time within the game”. If a team are time wasting from the first minute to try and get a draw or steal a win then they should be cautioned for it. Goalkeeper wasting time in the 10th minute is the same as time wasting in the 88th minute. Yet it’s never cautioned early on.
I always think that’s a strange part about refereeing. How many teams have you seen a blatant yellow not given because it’s the first 5-10 minutes of a game.
