I have been an arsenal fan all my life, but never saw this side of Martin Keown… what an absolute legend.. articulate, funny and mesmerising. What a great interview
After watching and disliking, but grudgingly respecting Keown as a player for so many years, it makes me really happy to see what a genuinely nice bloke he is.
such a brilliant episode with an Arsenal great. As a young arsenal supporter, I'm sad I never got to witness the 1998 and Invincible teams play live. The character and passion those teams showed to achieve what they did is something the current squad could look up to if they want to achieve greatness. I also loved the stories of all the funny moments and the challenges that happened on and off the pitch. Hearing about the more human side of a footballers career really gives me a deeper appreciation for all of their achievements. Thank you Gary, Alan, and Martin❤
I am lucky enough to have watched football from 1994 onwards. Arsenal in the late 90s/early 2000s were incredible. I remember Man United were dominating and for a few seasons they couldn't cope with Arsenal. Great battles, great rivalry
What an episode. Mr. Keown is one the toughest, grittiest, consistent central defenders the premier league and Arsenal have ever seen. And like many others, I too pine for 80’s/90’s/2000’s era of football where players were creative, spontaneous and enjoyed the beautiful game.
Lifetime Liverpool fan but Keown is still a legend! Always enjoyed watching how tough and strong he was…should have had more England time like he said!!
I'm a Liverpool fan and I never liked Martin as a player because he was hard as nails and I knew our forwards would get a battering. He's a fantastic pundit and this interview was amazing, what a TOP MAN!
You guys are really killing it with the interviews! Everyone on the channel has been interesting and with some fantastic stories both good and bad that we would never have got to hear otherwise so thank you lads. Thanks to Harry and the rest of the team backstage as well, always well put together and edited etc and its appreciated. Cheers to you all 🍻
Martin was 38 during the invincible season and did his part. It's unfortunate that Mr Arsenal (Adams) left in 2002 and couldn't become an invincible! What a time to be alive. I was in high school.
A fan from the Netherlands: Gary, you will be missed on the BBC, but thankfully I can continue enjoying your podcast. Sports journalists can learn a lot from you. Thank you for the fantastic shows!
Biased as an Arsenal fan, but a superb interview and insight, I connect with Martin being passionate & principled which probably enhances his intensity and competitiveness. ❤
Thank you, Martin! Gary and Shearer-what a dream it would be to grab a coffee with these heroes of mine. Even at the ripe age of 60, these guys always bring a smile to my face. Thanks again! 😎
As a Liverpool fan I really enjoy this podcast with Gary, Alan and Micah. The personalities that you guys interview and the way that you interview them is thoroughly interesting and most entertaining...please keep it up
1. This is nothing to do with Simon Jordan. 2. Simon is FAR more articulate you simply cannot dispute that. 3. Keown is a very biased contributor to tv and radio.
@@DenverBK1980 Articulate? An analysis piece for MOTD I saw him do was literally "look at this ... Pass, bang bang bang, goal!" No there was no context, that was it. One of the worst pundits going.
This kind of interview makes me crave for football in the 80s, 90s and the early 2000s, and clearly those older than me would wish earlier than that. But that was what I grew up with, especially as an Arsenal fan. Proper players with skills. Money, stats and data have ruined football. Even as an Arsenal fan, players like JJ Okocho were a pleasure to watch at Bolton. Would an Okocho be successful in today's Premier League? I doubt it. Players were proper players back then, now they're just glorified athletes.
@@Rafflewafflez He wouldn't, Okocho's talent was his skill and his footballing brain. But he wouldn't have the stats for City. He was too laid back in his style, teams would have to carry him.
Money has always been a part of football, it's the most popular sport in the world. The difference with back then is it wasn't as documented as it is now.
Absolutely enjoyed that episode well done guys and Martin a top guy on and off the pitch. Always love listening to him and the amount of respect in the comments here is fantastic to read unlike the disrespect shown to him on other platforms namely talksport !
Irish Keown? wow didnt know. Reminds me, Im sure Gary remembers Gerry McGowan. He was from Derry, signed for Leicester Youth Team and lived in digs with Gary back in about 1979. He came home for a quick visit with his family, and by sheer coincidence was arrested for being an IRA member. Forced to sign a confession, then got sentenced to life. Anyway, he went on the run for 20 years, then got an apology from the British government. If he hadnt gone back that weekend, he could have been a household name. great documentary about it on youtube called running scared 2002.
Respek Keown. Proper Oxford. He used to come in to visit our school in the early 1990s, St Augustine's, he went to the same school but was about 10 years before us.
Just brilliant! I was reflecting at the one hour playtime at first - ooh, one hour is too long... But I started watching and when it ended it felt like way too short. Thanks ❤
I never forgave Keown for selecting Tainted Love on Radio 1 during Euro 92. Interesting, Southall didn't drink, and in his autobiography, he stated Keown drove the established players up the wall with his neurosis and self-doubt.
First time watching your channel and regardless of what was said by David Coote, I am very pleased with the main presenter on the left. A very adult view and in my opinion, the right way to view it. They're all human, don't cancel the guy because of this. Looking at the results he officiated in the only loss was Arsenal in February so I completely agree with the presenter on the right, where he said someone has sat on this videeo and timed it's release accordingly. What a player Martin Keown was ! Hard as bloody nails and no one was getting by him ! I've no idea why talksport and Lineker here even try mess wi him 😂, Thanks for the memories Martin, we were desperate for you and Wrighty to come to Celtic 💚💛
Never realized how much Martin looks like Emi Martinez.... That also would be a great interview from the goalkeepers aspect. (fingers crossed) also as a Chelsea fan, i look forward to getting Martins autobiography for Christmas. Absolute legend
I disagree, I'd rate him higher than Southgate. England managers love leaving out some of their best players, one of the reasons why we haven't won anything since 1966. Keown was a great club player, his second spell at Arsenal 310 matches, when they were competing with Manchester United, speaks for itself.
Arsenal had no chance of winning in 99 as United were 'energised' and lifted by the incredible idea of the first treble and everyone was talking about it. I was convinced nobody was going to stop us. The run-in for United was Villa home, Middleborough Away and Spurs home, and we won all three. I honestly wasn't scared during any of these games. Even though Arsenal had it all in their own hands, their run-in was Derby country home, Leeds United away, and Villa home. Thankfully, arsenal slipped up at Leeds, who beat them by one goal, and Man United won the title by just 1 point. I literally celebrated winning the league for the last two weekends after Arsenals slip-up when Hasselbaink scored in the 86th min for Leeds United and put the title in United's hands the following week against Spurs at OT. Back then, Arsenal certainly had the best overall defence in the league, but United had the best individual defender in Jaap Stam. A literal concrete wall that nobody could pass. The league table was crazy this season, United scored 21 more goals than Arsenal, but Arsenal conceded 20 fewer goals than United. As well as just a single point difference in the final league tally, there was also a single goal difference between the two teams, with United's GD: 43 and Arsenal's GD: 42. The Premiership was amazing this year. No other season has never matched this excitement. Then United beat Newcastle to win the FA Cup before beating Bayern in the Champions League final to win the first ever Treble.
the semi final of the cup had its effect also, positive for you and negative for us, but great times though.....and no one moaned about passion or lack of it.
@@stewartmaclean6665 So true, I forgot about that. Arsenal were an incredible team with world-class players in virtually every position. That Arsenal team from 99 would wipe the floor with most teams today, inc Man City. Players like Pires, Petit, Overmars, Henry, Cole, Vieira, Ljungberg, Bergkamp, Parlour, Boa Morte, Kanu. Scary good! I'll never forget Giggs goal, though. That felt like divine intervention for me. What made this treble so special for me was the teams we had to beat to win the FA Cup and the teams we had to beat to win the Champions League. I honestly don't think there could have been a harder group of fixtures than what we had to endure in both competitions. Far more difficult than Man City's boring fixtures for their treble. City's treble wasn't even entertaining to watch, either. Boring football.
