Lately, I've been watching quite a few Brazilian movies or movies that take place in Brazil in general. Last Stop 174 and City of Men have been 2 of my favorites (other than City of God and Elite Squad 1 and 2). City of Men is a movie based on a 16 episode tv series of the same name and Last Stop has a documentary of this story called 'Bus 174'. Great reactions. Been subbed for awhile.

It is important to say that everything the film says about "the system" is true, especially in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Brazil is given over to criminals, from politicians to street thieves.

The prison scene really happened in real life. Look it up, in 2011, when the leaders of CV (Comando Vermelho) inside of Bangu 1 prison, received weapons and broke through to reach the area where ADA (Amigos dos Amigos) members were jailed.
They killed a lot of people and burned Ue (the leader of ADA) alive.

    Brazilian speaking here:
Its hard to find a movie better than "Elite Squad" here in our country. Yeah yeah, you'll hear a lot about "Cidade de Deus", "O Auto da Compadecida" and "Central do Brasil", but even these do not come even CLOSE to this masterpiece here. I'm afraid the other brazilian movies shall not be that engaging to foreign audiences. I could suggest an extra movie if you have the time (and luck to find), named "Bingo: O Rei das Manhãs", which in english was released as "Bingo: The King of the Mornings". Its the true story about our very own brazilian Bozo The Clown. Yeah, we had one here running TV kids shows as well. But this story is not supposed to be funny and colorful, but instead, paints a darker picture about how Bingo's (codename for Bozo, due to Copyrights) actor was heavily into drugs and alcohol, and lived a life of s#$t on stage and outside. Worth watching.

Hey Brazil here🇧🇷! Thanks for the reaction❤ I loved to watch your thoughts at the end of the video since this is such a bold thought-provocking movie.
Regarding the violence, when commenters say that "this is real Brazil", I just wanted to highlight that theses movies specially showcase the reality of the city of RIO, so much so that I'd think it is better to say that "this is the real Rio life in the FAVELAS".
Honestly, It'd be fair to say today that the Rio de Janeiro favelas are in a constant state of war (just 2 days ago a kid was shot by a stray bullet from a shooting on his way to school there). BUT in my opinion most of Brazil doesn't experience that level of rampant violence (with some exceptions here and there). Criminality and violence is mostly found in the poorer areas of cities (since they're harder to regulate), just like in most cities around the world.
In the favela's case, think of that place as having this huge area filled with close knit and poorly-infrastructured housing where not even a car can pass through in between, there is just no way for regular police to regulate and control the area from afar which makes every criminal-cop encounter a straight up close-up warzone.
Basically, the geography and infrastructures in favelas make it nigh impossible to ever think it will be free of violence and exploitation.
Now about the corruption in Brazil, it is (and has always been since the founding of the nation) deeply embeded into the government's dealings. And with the way the judiciary system here is shit (pardon my language) corruption NEVER gets properly sentenced. Lol just look at our current president who years ago basically got his curroption accusations sweeped out becsuse of some "legal tecnicalities" but has now been elected again despite the "clean sheet law" where every politian must not have a criminal record. I'm not saying he's a bad president (I actually think he's doing a decent job, at least way better than the previous one), I'm just saying that he's probably doing some embezzlement that will likely never be trialed for.

I wanted to recommend another movie I just recently watched, "Shot Caller" (2017) starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister from GoT) and Jon Bernthal (Punisher, Walking Dead, and so much else), among many others. Family man makes a mistake and winds up in a California state prison, and once itside it's sink or swim. It's a raw, unmerciful look into parts of the US prison system and what it does to people. The movie actually starts with him being released from prison, and we follow both his struggle to complete a deal he can't back out from, while his time in prison is told in flashbacks. Just a fantastic movie, great performances all around (Nikolaj is terrific!), and a haunting score. The last movie that had me this gripped was Sicario (2015), and that's saying something. o.O
Fair warning though, it does picture the heavily racially segregated US prison system where (at least in some prisons) each of the different "races" stick together exclusively. With the main character being a white guy, it does mean that the story is told from his POV, with all that that entails.
It isn't, at all, that the white guys are portrayed as the good guys, and that the other races are bad. The white guys in this are guilty of committing horrible crimes, it's just.. at least sometimes they and their choices ARE portrayed. I would argue, however, that you could do literally the same movie with a black guy as the main character, or an hispanic, or whatever "race". That just isn't this movie.
I first watched this just the other week, and every evening since I've been re-watching some of the most heavy hitting scenes.
Now, I don't think a YT reaction to it would net very many views at all, since practically nobody watched the movie in the first place it seems, but maybe watch it your own time (if you have time) and slap the whole thing up on Patreon.

People sometimes don't understand that speech from Fraga, in the begining of the movie, saying that the arrested population would be 90% of Brazil's population. It's actually quite simple: The politics against crime does nothing to stop it. Instead, it makes it stronger, bigger. That's the whole message of the movie, but people are more into the "cool scenes" of violence, and the simplification of "good vs evil". That's the kind of stupidity that will eventually put our kids, grandkids, and so on, in jail...

Yes, Fraga is based on a true politic (Marcelo Freixo), who is still in office to this day. Every now and then, an "opperation" occur in a poor area where "collateral damage" happens and 10, 15 people are killed by "crossfire". (Yeah, sure). The commission to investigate the militias is real (google "CPI das Milicias"). It is a fact that some areas have gas distribution, tv cable and other "services" controlled by paramilitary groups. Then there are the drug lords, fighting to death to control selling distribution. In 2018 one deputy Marielle Franco was killed in her car, along with the driver. She was a black homossexual feminist in Brazil, groups that are getting stronger in the past few decades. Today we know that her killer, Ronaldo Lessa, lived in the same condo with Jair Bolsonaro - then a federal deputy - who happened to become the latest fascist genocide Brazilian President. Today the left is back in power, so those #$fs&* are being chased again. But we don't know for how long. The dirty they are uncovering is astonishing, it goes as far as to the Amazon, where indigenous people were massacred for mining gold in protected areas. The rivers where flooded with mercury and killed incredible ammouts of wild life. PROBABLY the gold went to Russia. One week before the war, let me repeat that, one week before the war, Jair Bolsonaro met with Putin. In his first year in the office, Jair Bolsonaro fired the director of the Brazilian satellite monitoring institute, and replaced him with military personnel. He did the same with the Health Minister, and more than 6.000 positions in the government. The Education went to a pastor. The woman rights was led by an ultra-religious insane person, Damares Alves. 700.000 people died from Covid and the guy said it was just a "small flu". When the first 10.000 people died, he said to journalists "So what? I'm not a gravedigger". This is public, you can search everything.

    • @mattvideoeditor
      @mattvideoeditor ปีที่แล้ว

And by the way, some morons will swear to you that everything I am saying is just a "narrative from the left". But they can't prove it with facts. So they are very angry. Some fools will state that Lula, the former and actual president, was the biggest thief in history (which by the way is not completely false), but they exaggerate a lot just to help Bolsonaro. They could be against both Lula and Bolsonaro, but they chose to defend one of the sides to justify the disgrace they support. Its exactly like it happened with Trump or the Brexit: insane flat earthers that deny everything that bothers them.
