It's important to contextualize their urban combat mentality in Rio. Those favelas are built on hills. I like what Sean said about rules of engagement. If you look at some Brazilian police detainment videos, specially when a policeman is on a motorcycle and pulling over a suspect, many times they pull them over with guns drawn. Several times it’s just an innocent rider pulled over. The cop apologizes for the scary approach and explains what they have to deal with when the person being pulled over is a criminal. People most of the time show their understanding and gratitude for their service because they themselves know they a lot of times are victims of those same criminals.
You should definetly do a sequel on this with Elite Squad 2. They pretty much engage against paramilitary forces that nowadays run a good chunk of Rio de Janeiro. And regarding Abel not seeing favelas run down as the ones in the movie, he was in São Paulo, the geography does change a lot of things. Not saying that there aren’t like those ones in SP, but the favelas in Rio are kinda unique. And bear in mind that this movie was depicted like in the 90’s. A lot has changed since then, for better or worse.
In '88 had a Columbian Regular Army Officer in my class at Ft Benning, good guy. He had to leave during the course. his Boss had been killed by the Cartels and he had to return and take charge of the company. Never forget the look on his face as he was leaving.
17:39 that smoke you see popping in the air are simple fireworks. They are used to alert the slum soldiers of invaders, be it police or opposing factions. In this scene it can seem pointless since they are already exchanging bullets, but it's realistic, as it can happen irl.

I saw this movie a number of years ago and made me think a bit about when I was deployed in Haiti in 2004 - as my unit was pulling out, one of the countries that was taking over was Brazil and a unit of Military Police were set up kitty corner to us...a couple nights before flying home, they started a big gunfight with some Haitian narcos across the road from us that got a little too close for their comfort (and ours, since round swere flying back and forth over US. We managed to stay there almost 6 months without shooting at anyone (came close a few times, but no gun fights around our camp), but these guys started lighting up bad guys within a week of getting there it seemed.
In fact many BOPE operators were from the units that were deployed to Haiti...also to Libya. Comanf and Comandos, Comanf from the Brazilian Navy and Comandos from the Brazilian Army, so when they "retire" many join BOPE,CORE or COT...the last one is from our Federal Police. Some of them also served in the French Foreign Legion in Afghanistan...
There is something interesting about the origin of the criminal factions in Rio x BOPE and their relationship with the Cold War. The current reality in Rio is an unfolding of the clash between the Special Operations Forces of the Brazilian Army/Navy against Communist Guerrillas in the 70s. The factions emerged during the Cold War after communist guerrillas were arrested along with highly dangerous criminals who shared their skills acquired in Cuba, with the Red Command emerging years later. Parallel to this, BOPE emerged to meet the demand for a police unit specialized in resumption/rescue and irregular combat, with its first course directed by police officers who had completed the jungle warfare course and the army's special operations internship in addition to the counter course. navy guerrilla (currently COMANF) inheriting the culture of the blade in the skull from both. Rio is an incredible place to visit if you stay in the tourism-oriented arena, but if you cross the line, you'll find out why Capt. Nascimento wasn't lying when he said that not even the Israeli Army has as much combat experience as the Rio de Janeiro police.
If I remember right, at the very beginning they've been trained by the SAS. The director, while shooting the movie, was arrested by the real corrupt cops, for presenting them in a bad light, but because it's a fictionalized version of reality, not a documentary where they are named, they had to let him & the film crew go. It helped that the governor, a corrupt pig as well, gave his permission, everything else didn't matter. Crazy. Reminds me of "John Rambo", doing that movie while real corrupt soldiers, pirats & rebels were around them, they had to hire some of them, so they could shoot the movie, for protection. Some of the movie-rebels were real rebels, I think.
I believe, don't quote me though this is just something floating around in my head so I don't know if it's true, I could easily have just picked it up somewhere, that BOPE now trains other special operations/forces/services in urban CQB. I can see there being at least a kernel of truth - I suspect there are few on earth who have as much close quarter combat training as these guys.
SAS, my ass! No sh*t you remember. 😂 You don't even know what you're talking about. The real BOPE (Rio's elite squad) captain himself, Paulo Storani, was the Elite Squad consultant and actor's coach in the movie. (Paulo Storani on TEDx Talk: th-cam.com/video/XW2Y6JsYpl4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ATsALh-I48uzvJt9) No other elite squad in Brazil or the world would be able to face the violence scenario in Rio and instruct the actors with such fidelity.

This movie is so good. The sequel Elite Squad: Enemy Within might be even better and was the highest grossing Brazilian film when it came out. He becomes the leader of the Bope and tried to root out the corruption within the police. It's awesome.
Funny enough, the Narcos connection isn't just the main actor. Director of both movies went on to create the show. The sequel essentially feels like Narcos Brazil.
The mix of weapons was really interesting. I wonder if it is meant to illustrate funding (you get what you get) or a high-lo mix of long/short range necessities.
BOPE has a mix of gun power. They're definetely at war 24/7. They have SMG's, AR's, PT's, 12 gauges, LMG's, and of course precision rifles. Not a long ago, a BOPE's sniper killed a thug who was trying to hijack an entire bus, and in the end, he took everybody inside that bus as hostages. The sniper was on top of a fire fighter engine, under a red blanket, one shot - one kill. Search this, you'll see a lot of content about this case. "BOPE Sniper at Rio-Niterói Bridge"
They are well funded enough to get primo stuff like new guns from HK and FN, but it seems like they have loads of stuff collected from the military and drug gangs, and they let their guys select from the pile.
BOPE IS special forces. They are technically military police. That is why they don't give a shit about taking out dirty cops. Those literally are NOT their people. They were originally trained by the Spanish Special Forces... back when they were under Francisco Franco.
The last scene was definitely cold AF. He started as the guy who was the intellectual, who wanted to be a lawyer, who did see the "grey zone" just philosophically disagreed with it. His friend was the real zealot who was all in on the violence and making it black and white. That last scene just shows his full transformation. He went from the nerd who was a bit timid and overly analytical, to the stone cold killer who could out think any of his prey.
Many of the tactics to gather information from civilians in the film are French doctrine, which the French applied after the Indochinese War to the French in Algeria and which together with the School of the Americas was used a lot in Latin America. In Chile during the government of General Pinochet it was used a lot. Now in democracy we are living one of our worst moments as a society with terrorism and crime, as we are too soft on crime.

Once I heard that when the BOPE wants to be *really mean* when they go up the slums, they dress as common cops. Because the dealers will flee if they see the BOPE, but if it's just the common cop, they'll try to face them.
Some civilians that get rough interrogation are thugs even if they were unarmed, they're called fogueteiros and usually drug guys employ kids to this kind of job. their duty is to launch firecrackers and make noise if they spot police going up the favelas to give bad guys a chance and early warning. It's funny to see people react to Brasil as depicted in this movie and have them think this is the reality of the entire country. I was fortunate enough to never have this kind of life. What fucks us as a country is not that everyone is poor, but some people are so far deep in misery that they get forgotten by society. In Rio de Janeiro, you can have a luxury condo for people with more money than god and right beside it a hill with thousands of poor people trying to get by.
I'd still like to see more SEAL Team here, and more episodes of The Unit. Especially with The Unit, you get to skip half the episode avoiding the wife subplots, which means we as your audience get to watch longer clips and you get to do longer reactions to those clips because there's less story to cover.

"I'd do it If I was in a third country where I can do whatever I want" So many americans have the wrong mentality lol Only thing keeping the US from being a third world country is the GDP, brute and per capita, cause some of the big cities are having serious problems with police brutality, police corruption, homeless people and hard drugs like Fentanyl. I recommend Nick Johnson's channel, he goes by american districts that are struggling with hard drugs and homeless population like Skid Row. I know Brazil is not in a position to point fingers, but the USA is not exactly Norway or Finland right now. About São Paulo, it's not so similar to Rio as you guys describe, with kids stabbing people downtown; pickpockets are common, but RJ's violence is way more intense and I think that's what you're talking about. For comparison; São Paulo has a lower homeless population than New York City even though the area in NYC is smaller and overall population is lower. Also gotta keep in mind that Elite Squad was released in 2007 and the movie is set in 1997. A few things stayed the same, but a few things changed too since then.
Chicago is "3rd world" for sure. We have some shitholes here in the states, dont take it personally. It used to be 1st world described the allied nations that opposed the soviet union post ww2, 2nd world were the soviets and their allies, and 3rd world was everyone else. Nowadays, people use third world as a term to describe lesser developed nations.
This movie was recorded in a crimeless favela. It became crimeless not because of some police operation. It's not in the hands of criminal organizations no more only because it's close to the BOPE HEADQUARTERS, literally only because it's near the BOPE. That's how much feared the BOPE is.
A few years ago the army and the navy were called to pacify some of the favelas in Rio. Some places became literal war zones, and special forces operations were conducted on a daily basis. In one of these operations, army SF waited for nightfall and infiltrated the woods used as a escape route for the traficantes. When day came, the police started moving into the favela and the traficantes couldn't hold their positions. Their only option was to run into the woods. It was a happy day for all law-abiding citizens of Brazil.
This is by far the best and most technical reaction to Elite Squad that I've ever seen, probably because they are military... please watch Elite Squad 2.
Something that some people "forget" to understand it's the gross "context" of the first Elite Squad. The stuff is, Elite Squad 1, yes, it's really based on real stuff. What's the point of killing people without many questions in the film for example? Is that normal? ... (Sometimes... sadly) The film takes place at the time that Pope John Paul II came to Brazil (I think 1997) as we see, and, boys & girls: did he wanted to stay in a good hotel or something else? No, he wanted to stay in an archbishop's house, basically, in a freaking slum (or favela, whatever you want). So, imagine, if the Pope takes a "stray bullet" or whatever during his stay in Brazil? In other words, the Pope himself put BRAZIL in a very bad position, that is, what preceded his coming to Brazil was that: a "clean sweep", and for god sake, I don't want to compare shit but Ukraine did something like that with their dogs to receive a football event in 2012: the "EuroCup", almost 300k dogs was vanished from the face of earth. Again, about the movie, that clean sweep wasn't necessarily something that brought so many changes to the place afterwards 'cause, after the Pope left, basically an entire faction was exterminated, so another went there nice and easy and took its place, nothing changed, and BOPE knew that, they "changed 6, for half a dozen" (this is quote that we use in Brazil, I don't know how to translate in english this) just because of the Vatican and what the Christian religion means in the eyes of the world. The whole events that we just saw in the movie happened just to leave Pope's ass, safe.
What he doesn't know and what surprises me because he was a Green Beret is that the BOPE learned all his tricks or at least most of them. 7th Special Forces Group of the United States Army Since the 70's, the Green Berets of the 7th Group have been training special operations forces from different countries in South America.
These men live in war 24/7, great soldiers, they got tons of experience in combat. A fun (sad) fact is that many of them get retired by getting seriously hearing problems due to frequent gun shots

Tropa De Elite is part of a series of movies the director Jose Padilla made. 1) Children of God 2) Bus 143 3) Elite Squad 4) Elite Squad 2. The movies show Brazil through different angles. The first movie was the children, rich and poor, the second was the downtrodden and criminals, the third was the Narcos, and the fourth was the corruption in the government. The book is where the money is at. I don’t know if y’all know, all the movies and stories are about the young black BOPE officer and his time in BOPE. The book and movies are 10/10 Edit: the grenade part is real and was verified and CPT Fabio has one of the best redemption arch’s.
To be clear.. when you mentioned in the movie"it's hard to watch when they are taking civilians to torture in order to get information", actually that guy that is being torture is a thug.. he appears in a scene earlier in the movie (I don't recall exactly which one), using the same blue shirt, with a rifle on his hand. The Bope officers didn't torture an innocent to find Baiano, they knew that the guy they tortured is a criminal. I'm not here to say it was right or wrong to do it, but to clarify.
19:15 yeah there arent good hospitals in the favelas... you know WHERE there are good hospitals though? THE REST OF THE ENTIRE CITY THE FAVELAS ARE LOCATED IN. you know favelas arent this inospitable locations or some islands. they are simply densely populated but relatively small city blocks that use the natural hills in the city. and it doesnt take that long to go from a favela into one of the many public hospitals around.
Brazilian here, people often ask themselves if this movie is based on reality, I'd say reality is based on this movie. It's 100% true. Some of the translations are off by a bit and sort of doesn't translate the intensity of a scene but still awesome.
So, I'm an expert on Group Therapy, having well-over 1,000 hours in facilitating therapeutic Group Therapy. I was also a Group Therapy instructor and Clinical Supervisor (Retired from the field). I say this because......many of the group cohesion tools are highly similar between military training (including SOCOM) and therapeutic Group Therapy. One of the cycles one of the Grandfathers of Group Therapy (Dr. Irvin Yalom) discovered was when the students start to unite around hating the instructor (or group facilitator). It initiates (and then progressively builds upon) Esprit de corps. At some point, the relationship between instructor/group facilitator and the students is repaired and even enhanced. However, letting the students rebel a bit, can help minimize the boundaries between them, helps them focus on the similarities, rather than the differences. .
Last scene, where Baiano asks not to shoot him in the face. The whole sentence, in the Brazilian version, is: Not to the face, damn it, so as not to ruin the wake!
Awesome react! Do a react on the second movie, they made two. As a friend said already, this is a light version of the reality in the slums, but the most realistic ever show to the world of how things are done. It is a daily WAR there for cops, much like gaza strip. Good work on the react!

It looks like a movie but if you live in South America you realize that sadly it is very realistic.
People most of the time show their understanding and gratitude for their service because they themselves know they a lot of times are victims of those same criminals.
exactly
Cops apologizing?? In Brazil?? 😂😂😂😂😂
as a Brazilian too, with militaries in the family, SF too, I can tell that the grenade thing is a real thing, very common.
This is from the same people that did city of god

In '88 had a Columbian Regular Army Officer in my class at Ft Benning, good guy. He had to leave during the course. his Boss had been killed by the Cartels and he had to return and take charge of the company. Never forget the look on his face as he was leaving.
17:39 that smoke you see popping in the air are simple fireworks. They are used to alert the slum soldiers of invaders, be it police or opposing factions. In this scene it can seem pointless since they are already exchanging bullets, but it's realistic, as it can happen irl.
Watched elite squad years ago. Fucking brilliant movie. This movie and and black hawk down are what really got me interested in military tactics and strategy
BOPE are one of the best (or maybe the best) special forces unit in Latin America. Brazil is similar to the US in terms of size and population, but also they have all the third world problems you can imagine, so they deal with the real shit everyday.

So this movie is set in the 90s, today BOPE is a lot better trained and armed.
Indeed!
Some of them also served in the French Foreign Legion in Afghanistan...
you should read about "ASSOMBROSO" he was a brazilian comandos sniper that was deployed on haiti.
And what is their legacy in Haiti ? Some corrupt Brazilians taught Haitian gangs how to make money via kidnapping

You guys need a crash course about Brazilian violence and Rio de Janeiro violence. Surely it's not a simple subject to debate.
LIE... SAS MY EGGS
SAS, my ass! No sh*t you remember. 😂 You don't even know what you're talking about.
The real BOPE (Rio's elite squad) captain himself, Paulo Storani, was the Elite Squad consultant and actor's coach in the movie. (Paulo Storani on TEDx Talk:

Last week, a couple of police officers got into a gunfight with BOPE... It was all recorded by a security camera. CRAZY!
Had not heard of this one, but will definitely be checking it out
Funny enough, the Narcos connection isn't just the main actor.
That guys never gunna fall asleep again lol
Hellllll YESSSS! This is my favorite realistic action movie of all time! Can't wait to see what you guys think of it!
Oh yeah. Something to entertain me on a boring Sunday! Gotta secure my drink first ...
Cant wait to see yalls next react. thanks for all the great content yall create. stay safe brothers, and Merry Christmas.
Great commentary guys! Love that movie, I also recommend the sequel to this film Elite Squard 2. Made by the same team and the same director. Also very awesome.
The first time I watched both the movie parts was in 2020.Tonight I watched Elite Squad 2 again.Glad this movie is getting due recognition in mainstream media and people are acknowledging the contribution of honest cops like Captain Nascimento.
bro the whole point of elite squad is showing how awful people like him are, taking the matter into their own hands and fighting other people instead of fighting against the system
@@alex-kq3js I don't think man..In this movie, Nascimento's been portrayed as 'good' and he fought with certain people only after his family was attacked.Besides that he had a different ideology and thought process with respect to politicians, criminals, human rights etc with which one might disagree for sure.

In Rio de Janeiro, you can have a luxury condo for people with more money than god and right beside it a hill with thousands of poor people trying to get by.
not at all. What really fucks up us as a country are the politicians and its corruption.
10:25 Fun Fact: Many BOPE operators are usually former brazilian SF either from the navy or from the army...

I'd still like to see more SEAL Team here, and more episodes of The Unit.
Especially with The Unit, you get to skip half the episode avoiding the wife subplots, which means we as your audience get to watch longer clips and you get to do longer reactions to those clips because there's less story to cover.

Here public safety it´s way better than there.
The original objective of this movie was show the policeman like the bad guys, but the brazilian people are so sick of violence and corruption, with Captain Nascimento for the people was the hero.
Public security in São Paulo isn't much better than Rio, it's the same shit. Liar.

A maior organização criminosa do Brasil é o PCC, de São Paulo!
"I'd do it If I was in a third country where I can do whatever I want"
So many americans have the wrong mentality lol
Only thing keeping the US from being a third world country is the GDP, brute and per capita, cause some of the big cities are having serious problems with police brutality, police corruption, homeless people and hard drugs like Fentanyl.
People really have no clue what police deal with. Love having Sean’s police experience.
This movie was recorded in a crimeless favela. It became crimeless not because of some police operation. It's not in the hands of criminal organizations no more only because it's close to the BOPE HEADQUARTERS, literally only because it's near the BOPE. That's how much feared the BOPE is.
The best hospitals for gun wounds in the world is in Rio de Janeiro. They have a lot of experience.
Looks like fun. Amazon Prime. Thanks for the recommend.👍
Is that normal? ... (Sometimes... sadly)
The film takes place at the time that Pope John Paul II came to Brazil (I think 1997) as we see, and, boys & girls: did he wanted to stay in a good hotel or something else?
Thank you all at FNG for your time and effort. A suggestion I have if its not on your list already is: The Long Road Home series. Merry Christmas all!

No wonder Call of Duty creator are going to release a version " Favela´s mode". But the movie was tremendous. Love it.
The book and movies are 10/10
