Fully 3D Printed Fractal Vise - no supports or fasteners....but smaller in size

  • After watching Hand Tool Rescue and Chris Borge's video on an antique fractal vise, I also can't resist making one of my own. My aim is to design one that is fully 3D printable without using any fasteners or metal lead screws and at the same time to be printed without any supports. It's not going to be as robust as Chris or Teaching Tech's design simply because plastic is not going to be as strong as metal. So why do it? Because I don't have those parts and I'm lazy to source for them. Just kidding ok. I just want to challenge myself to what extend 3D printing can achieve and also to brush up on my CAD skills. I'm not an engineer so I made an unnecessarily complicated design but it is fun and I definitely learned new things along the process.

    Very cool!!! Just remember, NORMAL R&D always includes a lot of "failed" attempts, that you improve on! You only fail, if you give up! 👍👍

    In the metal testing world, I'm still new but the tools are all expensive on average, the shadow with a small object, a V chisel sharpener, is very small but the price is stifling. 3d is very helpful

      @@giwangpvcartslamp1349 Hi, i'm sure there are many 3d printing services in Indonesia as well. You can request them to print this for you as the files are free to download. The links are in the description. I think it would be much more expensive to print and ship from msia.

    Hello, thank you for the great design!
    I was wondering if by any chance you have the assembled 3D model for the design.

      Thank you. I'm not sure what you meant by assembled 3D model. You can download the Fusion 360 files from the thingiverse link if that's what you meant.

    can you tell me how much filament you totally spent including all the fails?

    • @tomatolab9612
      @tomatolab9612  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't keep track of the filament used in the slicer but the whole vice weighs about 220g. Some said they used 1/3rd of a roll to half a roll. This also depends on the infill % used. As for the failed prints, I'm not sure coz I didn't track but it's quite a lot during the design stage.

    Could you shed some light as to why you have the flange in the plans you uploaded for the c-clamp screw? Can't fit it through the hole. I noticed you cut it off in the video. I am new to this, and I have a cheap printer, and my print area is a 100x110 mm cylinder. I have had to scale it down a lot to the point of uselessness but this is more of a "fun" thing to find out if I really want to invest more into it.

    • @tomatolab9612
      @tomatolab9612  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ahhh, u probably had downloaded the files from cults3d or thangs? i had corrected the c-clamp screw in thingiverse last year but forgotten to update them in cults3d and thangs. the c-clamp design doesn't work well anyway, I would suggest not to use it as it's not strong enough as shown in my video. the tolerance on the parts are generally 0.3mm, so scaling it down to your bed size would be quite impossible I think. maybe it may work on a sla printer but I have never tried it before.

    • @tomatolab9612
      @tomatolab9612  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's designed with 0.3 mm clearance. Some says it's too loose, some too tight. It depends on individual machines. Try scaling it higher by a few % if it doesn't fit.
