i’m glad i didnt grow up during the 3d gta era. the first gtas i played were liberty city stories and chinatown wars, but i already had access to gta 4 and red dead at a young age. the 3D era games feel so stiff to play but the stories are good now that im old enough to appreciate it
The peak times in which we enjoyed games as a kid have certainly passed, but the quality of a lot of franchises has decreased, for various reasons. Especially in recent years with broken/buggy/incomplete products, lackluster amount of content, changing a games target audience, and of course the egregious microtransactions that kids will eat up. I have watched games like Call of Duty, go from one of the leading and best FPS games in the genre to almost being a laughing stock with how much of a decrease the games quality has become because of those things I mentioned, it's quite sad.
I don't think growing up is always the problem. I noticed plenty of franchises that did get worse with time even if I didn't have nostalgia for them. One of the best examples I can give is Halo. I only played the Halo series for the first time when it was ported to PC as I didn't have consoles growing up. I could still clearly see that 343's Halo doesn't have the magic of Bungie's Halo. I understood why the fanbase feels that way after playing them myself. This tends to happen to most franchises when the original creators leave because the new blood just doesn't understand how the OG's made it work.
Going into games with an open mind has made my gaming experience great recently, I tried Cyberpunk and it has become one of my favorite games that I go back to all the time. I also tried the Yakuza series that I was afraid of trying because the first 7 games are japanese only with english subtitles but I connected with the characters and stories and I can't get enough of it. fuck Ubisoft though I'm never playing a post 2016 Ubisoft game.
What I hate about newer games (Hogwarts Legacy for example) is that pretty much everything that is explorable in the game has an icon on the map that directly guides you to where you need to go. Or if I needed to find a certain animal there’s just a den marked on the map that’s full of them. It completely ruins the exploration of the game. It turns it from exploring to a task
I prefer games that put markers on everything. It keeps me engage where as I would mostly ignore content that wasn't directly pointed out because why possibly inconveninve myself or go to find something that is ultimately dissapointing.
That's something I like (but is sometimes frustrating) about elden ring. It never specifically tells you where to go or what to do just gives you a story and you explore yourself
I love games that don't put markers down because it's way more immersive to actually check your map, plan your route to the destination and check road signs and stuff to see if you're going in the right direction I love escapism
Tbh i only come back to 5 games gta sa gta iv red dead 2 red dead 1 and warzone idk but those are the only games i know how to enjoy i really wanted to like witcher 3 but no it didnt really click with me i bought cyberpunk played for 10 hours straight the first day then never touched it again i just cant with new games anymore nothing impact me at all
What’s the piano music at the start? Sounds so familiar 2:34 i so miss that feeling. Harry potter and the chamber of secrets and Spider-Man 2 both PC gave me that safe, homeish feeling. Didn’t matter how bad Spider-Man 2 was considered, for kids it was AMAZING. Man it’s painful to remember knowing it’s forever gone
dude what are you smoking? "boomers" are the ones that made great games to begin with innovative ideas "hideo kojima" perfect example if anything its gen zers upcomers who don't know what there doing with games, look at the state of modern gaming, with woke ideologies stuffed in the content and just endless remakes, but you raise some great points, some games can change for the better
You know what that is a solid point there, I was more referencing greedy CEOs like Strauss Zelnick but it's true I shouldn't boil down all boomers to being bad for video game design A lot of them know the industry more than anybody else
I remember when I bought my first PC with paperroute money Jeez I Beat Assassins Creed 3 with it running at 15FPS 1080p the entire game 💀💀 when you're younger you settle for anything I miss those times
Remember, nostalgia is the memory of how something made you feel, not what the thing was.

Love games that just toss you in the deep end without much direction
3:29 GTA San Andreas sorta did the same thing except you go into the plane with a bike before it takes off.
San Andreas was so ahead of its time, I'd love to make a video on it someday
Stray on the ps5 is a recent gaming experience that I really found myself enjoying. Great games are definitely still being made

Well, I guess you're more open minded than you were...
I've heard great things about Yakuza 0, I really gotta get around to playing those games

Sounds like it's time to switch to Independent games.
