    Excellent video as always! I'd love to see a video of what home owners aren't and are allowed to do. Fully aware some people do DIY to a very poor and unsafe standard but I've always done small works myself after doing as much research as possable on the correct way to do it. Keep up the good work

    Chris, thanks for this video. I'm an enthusiastic amateur with plenty of theory and loads of testers (including a Fluke MFT) but I have little practical experience. I've watched countless videos from Nagy, GSH, Bundy and many others but this is the first time I've heard a bit of common sense when it comes to accepting that DIY electrics will take place. Your comment about helping us do small jobs safely makes perfect sense and any pro tips I can pick up are always welcome. BTW, I have a set of those wire strippers, great piece of kit!

    Chris a top tip i was shown, rather than poking the screw driver in at angles i get a bit of 2.5mm cable and put a 90 degree bend in it so it looks like an Allen key and bigger than the diameter of the light and put it into the center hole then twist it round if it hits something clockwise and anticlockwise your probably up against a joist or pipe. Less chance of jabbing a screw driver into something.

    • @shifty277
      @shifty277 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The best one is those thin metal coat hangers.
      Cut a short bit off, get the length of the coat hanger to the depth of the led before you create a bend in it that will account for the diameter of the unit.
      Poke it in the whole spin it round and you have just judged theres nothing in the total area of where the led unit will go.
      Wallah!

    I really enjoy your videos Chris and am slowly working through your back catalogue. You say in this one that you hope it helps people to do any work they undertake to be right, until its illegal. I personally feel that anyone should be able to undertake the work, as long as it is done to the correct standards. If subseqently it is found to be wanting then we have a legal system to deal with any conseqences. Part P for instance I consider to be for the likes of NAPIT and others to make money off the backs of honest people, like yourself or Delroy or Nick Bundy et al. Adam Smith got it right over 200 years ago in 1776 when he wrote. “People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices.”

    Recently had to cut 12 downlights the other day, was a one off job for me so couldn’t justify a dade, so tried a hero tub left over from xmas and my word it worked an absolute charm on plasterboard and lath and plaster (which was as solid as render), perfect for a DIYer, also as its rigid it prevented the saw pushing though which was handy as there were lots of loose wires all over the place.

    Even if it's illegal people will still give it a go. I was on the phone only 10min ago to a client who asked if I can tap straight into the DNOs buried supply cable to run off somewhere else. After explaining no you need to call the DNO, numerous reasons why, and suggesting I could run SWA cable from the existing board to desired locations (guessing shed or garage or similar, will see) the response was "yeah but nobody would know"... Mad.
    Bit scared what I'm going to find when I go to inspect job tomorrow.

    I thought that it was made illegal to do domestic electrical work other than like for like replacement without having Part P in 2005.
    Insurance company won't be happy with a fire claim either.

    • @havoctrousers
      @havoctrousers 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's never been illegal to do any domestic electrical work. Part P is part of the building regs and makes certain types of electrical work notifiable. That means you have to tell LABC that you're undertaking notifiable work and have them inspect it afterwards. Part P is not a qualification or something you have. Members of an electrical competency scheme can skip the inspection step and have the scheme notify LABC of their work. It's certainly cheaper to hire a spark since LABC will charge you, but there's nothing legally that says anyone can't do their own electrical work.

    • @shifty277

      Its a converted loft so above the ceiling theres only about a 1ft in height of space so to get up there he'd be crawling over insulation and be very uncomfortable trying to balance on the joists trying to avoid stepping or putting pressure on the plasterboard.

      I would always have the light at the top of the stairs on the same circuit as the ones on the bottom, that way if you're upstairs and lights trips, you at least have light at the top of the stairs to see where you're going and reset the circuit breaker.

      And if downstairs trips then you have no lighting for the stairs, hall or landing. Think I’ll stick to the way I’ve been doing it. Ok, if you’ve got more than one light on the landing I suppose

      @@Hammy135 I don't think you're understanding it right... The upstairs lights would still be on one circuit and the downstairs lights on another circuit, the only exception would be one light at the top of the stairs being on the same circuit as the downstairs lights.

      Ash Jones, question; I’ve been gone for 20 years lol when did they make it illegal to do your own home electrics? Do they still sell all of the electrical stuff so homeowners can buy it? Over here in the states you get a permit from the town if your doing it the right way, they have inspectors come out during the install and you end up with a sticker when it’s all done.

      @@timdavison640 Disgraceful! Mixing and matching like that from a brand new slate.
      I've not long ago seen the cheapest sockets on the market in the UK put in a new build - the ones where a double socket is (I think) about £1.50 in a B&Q or DIY stores. Whack the hoover against it by accident and the casing cracks!
      MK white sockets are the base standard for cheapest at about £3 a double socket.
      More work for sparks down the line but bad that the standards are low in brand new homes around the country.
