Hi Chris, I am an electrician in the United States. I enjoy your videos and find them quite interesting. One thing I find similar between us is some of the nightmares we run into customers homes. Just like England customers are allowed to install their own electrical in the United States. If I ever had to work in your country I definitely would mess up the neutral contentions our color coding system in the US is so much different. Thank you I am learning a lot and have a new appreciation for my trade.
I do quite a lot of LED tape, and I'd give you the following tips: 1. use 2x 0.75mm flat flex for your connection to the SELV transformer, it just fits nicer. 2. scissors are your friend for cutting LED tape - they give you a much nicer cut and you can cut exactly on the line so you can get equal sized pads (more useful if you do your own soldering). Also, they can cut the diffuser quickly and quite well. 3. hammer the diffuser in. Very, very gently, just a soft tap makes it much easier (I also do that on plastic trunking lid) 4. use a dab of superglue every 4-6" along the tape and you won't get called back due to the glue on the back of the LED tape failing in a few years time. Also, I typically drill through the flat edge rather than the 45 degree part when screwing through corner extrusion (and I always screw through extrusion rather than using clips). I've got my first quinetic switch to fit in a couple of weeks, so it was useful to see the demo! What a frustration that they don't have an earth terminal, though.
You should never use super glue anywhere near LED’s. It can react with the phosphor resulting in colour shift. It will also void the warranty if buying from a reputable supplier

I'm an experienced electrician but still enjoy watching other Sparks videos on TH-cam lets face it none of us know everything and you can see by the comments that the lads and lasses that are training really appreciate it so keep up the good work buddy.

Hi Craig - just wondering if you can advise what to do with Quinetic units when you carry out insulation testing of a domestic property since they are permanently connected to line and neutral. Do you have to locate and disconnect or can they survive the 500 volt test voltage?
@@LyndalewinderHi Julian. The receivers contain sensitive circuits so would not be advisable to pump 500v through it, I've haven't risked this myself! You can either IR test to cpc with L and N linked or disconnect the units and test each leg.
@@craigtonge455 Thanks for the reply Craig. Just found a data sheet (from TLC direct) that says the controller can stand up to 380vac for 24 hours and also says 600v or less so I think it should be ok with 500 vdc for the test. Not sure whether I'm brave enough to try it though! Cheers
@@Lyndalewinder yeah me neither! Although I suspect you'll get some strange results. Do an IR test with 250 and see what you get! I suspect it's just a relay switch inside.
I'm really liking those quinetic devices you're using, giving me lots of ideas for things which were not possible before, thanks for sharing those. Maybe a thought for another vid just on all the places you've used them, and also when it would be a bad choice.
@@thomaswoodall3101 Hi Buddy. Yes. The Quinetic receiver needs a permanent feed, then you take the output of the Quinetic on to the lamp/s. If you have an existing physical switch you'll need to swap it out for a Quinetic. Maybe ask CJR for full details as I'm not a qualified spark! Cheers

I am looking to do this now, inspired, almost finished with it but... stupidly went to test it without a led driver installed in my haste. POP! there goes the led strip. So I got a new strip (its aprox 4m) and powered it all up, flashing on and off. I think the 12w led driver i have isnt enough as I would need a 50w or 60w one. The 15w driver you have is fine for that length, but needs a higher watt for longer lengths of led strip
Measure from the wall to, say 500m, and make a light mark that will be covered by the extrusion. Then measure from the other wall to the mark. Add the two together for spot-on measurements.
Should have got Bundy to help out in the top loft, great vids mate your attention to detail is admirable. I think the short intro at the beginning is a great idea and a great way of testing it all works.
Good video. informative and inspirational. I wasn't aware if those kinetic switches, very useful. two questions.... it there a timetable version? for example, in this case, press the switch to turn the light on, then it will automatically turn off after a set period of time? also what is the operational range? for example, control a security light fixed to my shed at the end of the garden (approx 9 metres) with the switch inside the house?

Great video pal, stairway lighting always looks good on the stairs. I've put LED strip all the way up in metal enclosure powered by Alexa. I may jig it about and try get it working of a quinetic switch. The idea is great....

Great vid Chris - very well explained. Could your tell me what happens if you carry out an insulation test on a circuit with a Quinetic switch unit. Because it is permanently connected to Line and Neutral do you need to disconnect one side or will it survive the 500v of the test?

i did thumbs up but i felt i needed to comment re the metal filings in the bedroom carpet, i drilled myself in the house many times, and for the time it takes to get a sheet of newspaper or an old cereal box its well worth the effort :) but you knew this really anyway.
Nice little project. The only thing I would do for my staircase is fit an upward facing profile so the LEDs aren't facing you when you come down the stairs.
Got two traditional looking pendant lights in my kitchen to give a bit more light over some worktop. Used this method exactly. Quenetic switching fed from the last 3 plate lighting rose. Needed to rod through 2 cables to feed the pendants, all installed into an adaptable box and clipped direct. I hope this quenetic switching becomes a bit more cost effective in time, especially if your doing a rewire and incorporating this system, i recently quoted for a rewire and doing a quenetic system put an extra £700 on the job. Loving the rant by the way. If you ain't in it, you won't get it.
I really think the best example for these is where Chris is using them, when doing a rewire and you're chasing walls anyway the cost to fit cables and for the decorators to fix up is cheaper than these are, but when it's already decorated or the customer changes their mind after decorating, these are definitely cheaper, I don't think they really need to become cheaper than they are, even if I do agree they are expensive for what they are.
Great installation, only thing I would have done is used a flat profile so the light washed up the wall to the ceiling, would have been less 'in your face' when standing at the top of the stairs and given a more uniform light spread but still looks great and does the job. Great video

I did something similar with a smart WiFi switch. Which is good but I can see the advantages of those switches, wherever possible I have used LightwaveRF but the stairs LED I wanted to be able to change colours. Nice to see I did this correctly lol. Ref the freebies, I use nearly all the gear you've been given and I learnt what's good and whats junk the expensive way. My kit has a majority of Wera, Wiha, Milwaukee and knipex because it doesn't let me down. Point being that you aren't pushing junk.

Them flies are called ( cluster fly ). Just spray once every summer or winter with a full can of insect spray. That's how I sorted mine.

Ref the freebies, I use nearly all the gear you've been given and I learnt what's good and whats junk the expensive way. My kit has a majority of Wera, Wiha, Milwaukee and knipex because it doesn't let me down. Point being that you aren't pushing junk.
