South African Townships fighting the flood of waste | Global Ideas

  • South Africa’s white sandy beaches and smart promenades contrast with life in the townships, where trash often abounds. In the townships of Port Elizabeth, waste collection is irregular at best. Children are playing in the rubbish and getting sick.

    What the news doesn’t tell you is that
    The city provides a waste bin system and some two ships refuse to use and prefer to just throw the waste on a heap

      Every one of us also needs to become more disciplined in how we sort out and dispose of trash.
      From children to adults and old people, all of us need to learn how to handle our own waste so as not to pollute our environment and destroy its ecosystems.
      It's tough, it takes discipline, self-control. Governments won't save us if we don't each become more aware of these issues.

    • @voidremoved
      @voidremoved 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@edfort5704 not really. you need to eliminate trash. If trash was a necessity of life, then our ancestors would have left ancient trash for us.
      Pay more attention to anything you bring home. Don't be afraid to email a company if you consume their products but see they have bad packaging. We need to demand new packaging, it can all be made of natural and plant material.

    my condolence for the mother who lost her kid. As an Indian I see a pattern between my country and this video, we always blame the government. Only local people/community can make the difference.

    Humans are so destructive to the very environment they need to survive.
    People need to take personal responsibility for their home, neighborhood and community.

    When I was 8 years old my mother told me that south Africa was not like the rest of Africa. Unfortunately, I'm afraid it's not very politically correct to say in our day and age what reason she quoted for this.

    • @agrid2608
      @agrid2608 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The rest of Africa have urban slums that are often 70, 80 or even over 90% of their urban population.
      In 1990 half of urban South Africa (46%) was slum and it's down to under 20% now.
      Guess your mother was right, though it wouldn't be politically correct to state why the stats were so bad back then in SA....

      @@agrid2608 I couldn't quite get what your point was but to my knowledge South Africa's population has grown almost twice, if not more since the 1990s. Plus, if I were you, I wouldn't belive blindly in the statistics of such an irreparably corrupt government as the South African one.

    Where I live, we are taught to divide things recyclable into 5main items: pure trash ,Kitchen waste, paper, plastic, aluminum, with other detailed groupings like glass, batteries etc. We wash them the best we can before throwing and taken by recycle collectors. We were educated in schools with such habits many years ago.

    If the authorities are useless then it's in your own best interest to simply clean it up. It's not that hard to find or create your own PPE using some materials from that dump. If the neighbor's wont help, then clean up your own area and build fences to prevent your children crossing to the other side.

    Municipalities dont get paid by these townships, to start with. Everywhere in the country, is just dirt and plastic, and no one cleaning it up; including the residents who made this mess to start with. There where neighbourhoods that used to be clean, now it almost also looks like this... everywhere. When will people realize how MANY projects have been paid for by overseas govts, and then left abandoned once left up to these communities. So sad. I live in a big dumpster, when I recycle my waste, and use as little plastic as possible.
