  • VICE World News host Zing Tsjeng explores how the City of London and its financial institutions profited from slavery in America long after the slave trade was abolished.
Empires of Dirt is a show about Europeans getting rich at the expense of everyone else. VICE World News host Zing Tsjeng uncovers the ugly history of the European colonial empires they don’t teach us in schools.
Countries around the world were looted for their treasures, people were oppressed and exploited and European powers relentlessly profited. The far-reaching repercussions of colonialism are all around us, from our financial institutions to the food we have in our cupboards at home - and it’s about time we took notice.
Watch the next episode from Empires of Dirt, in which we look at how Britain stole $45 trillion from India during its long and oppressive rule: • How Britain Stole $45 ...

More than 500 top business and government leaders will attend the second iteration of the New Economy Forum, hosted by Bloomberg’s company and a Chinese government-backed think tank from November 20 to 22, according to a statement by Bloomberg Media Group. www.scmp.com/business/china-business/article/3010944/michael-bloomberg-host-second-edition-new-economy-forum
“Bloomberg LP doesn’t make money in China only by selling terminals. Through its massive Bloomberg Barclays Global Aggregate Bond Index, Bloomberg LP is helping finance Chinese companies by sending billions of U.S. investor dollars into the Chinese bond market.
“This year, the index began a 20-month plan to support 364 Chinese firms by directing an estimated $150 billion into their bond offerings, including 159 controlled directly by the Chinese government. Bloomberg, along with other Wall Street firms, is effectively supporting the Chinese government’s efforts to resist the U.S. government’s economic pressure, while exposing American investors to increased risk.”

The UK lost its shirt in India. Many private enterprises made money, but the empire lost. Britain had an empire because it was rich. The Germans caught up so quickly because they had no empire leeching off its treasury.
With the exception of the Spanish, with their unique bullion-producing colonies in the new world, the rest of Europe simply raped their populations to pay for extravagant empires that were worthless.
Thank the Gods that the US was never so foolish as to fully take up “the white man’s burden,” which is why we had the means to save Europe from their colony-less oppressor, and later defeat the pauper USSR with its expensive colonies throughout the world.
And yes, I am aware of the US’s horrendous treatment of domestic minorities (African, indigenous, and Asian), but however immoral, the US as well as Germany had massive economic advantages in not having a treasury-bleeding empire to sustain

If people are really interested in righting the wrongs of slavery, start by not supporting companies that currently employ exploited people. Historical slavery is virtually important to understand, but current slavery can actually be stopped. If we're going to pay reparations, let's start by helping those currently enslaved. Look at the manufacturing practices of most large corporations and ask yourself if you're truly cool with supporting what they do. Slavery is an ongoing issue... it's time we eliminate the extant problem and mitigate the historical fallout.

      Exactly, it's capitalist wage slavery.
Sweatshops are just an example of the Raw Naked Brutality of capitalism fully exposed.
But don't be fooled, minimum wage jobs (all jobs under a boss in fact) in the west are an example of the same brutality just masked by Neoliberal bullshit.
In fact i was speaking to some Neolibs on reddit and they said that sweatshops are actually good because the workers earn more money than they did previously farming.
They're literally saying that some 14 year old girl breaking her body and spirit on 14 hour shifts 7 days a week for an extra $1.20 a day is progress.
I'm sorry but if that's the capitalist system working well then it's quite clearly an evil system.
Therefore saying thay socialism can't work because huh duh HuMaN nAtUrE is basically saying that human nature is inherently evil. Seriously Capitalism is a Fucking disease, keep distant don't let it infect your mind.

Just a quick kind of correction, although the British Empire abolished the slavery in 1807, it continued in it's colonies until 1838 (with exceptions territories under the East India Company, Ceylon and Saint Helena which carried on until 1843). It also continued in it's protectorates into the 20th century

    • @xlixity
      @xlixity 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

That's because this is a hitpiece against Britain meant for British audiences.
Anyone who's ever read a book knows about the atrocities of empires. But that's how it is.
Ever wonder why all the peaceful societies are dead? The strong will eat the weak.
It's not pretty, but it is what it is.
But in this case rather than talk about atrocities from a neutral stance, these vice videos are simply Anti-British propaganda.
There will be no video about the Ottoman Empire or Sweden.

This used to be an outlet with cool dangerous and undercover journalism. It is a shame it went down to populist agenda. Next time you buy bread, ask if baker's ancestors were involved in slave trade. At least could have picked a journalist who is not Singaporean, Asia's center for human trafficking, i.e. modern slavery. Same logic.
