  • A third of Cape Town's 3.7 million people now live in slums, with limited access to basic services, such as water, electricity and toilets. But whilst some are being 'upgraded', many are languishing in squalor.

In Flamingo Crescent, community leader "Aunty” Marie has been instrumental in bringing about change and transforming the lives of her community. After years of development each shack now has its own toilet, tap and electricity supply. "If there are no houses it's important to have your home upgraded. It's the only way you will retain your dignity". In contrast is the slum area of Santini, where hopes of development have been extinguished by local political division.

After I graduated with engineering and studied extra and worked so much in everything for years, now i am making good money but not 100,000$ a year but close to this, i stopped looking back at my people, because i am too busy sustaining or trying to grow more, and now interacting with middle to upper class on regular basis, thats how people operate now. In a secular South Africa there is no way a person can be poor unless by choice. @@wcstevens7 Mandela did a good thing, in that he avoided the slaughter his commie comrades were itching to begin.
But he couldn’t root out a culture of laziness and corruption which was ascendant in the Winnie Mandela faction of the ANC. Mandela was the anomaly-The problem with the ANC is that it was a revolutionary anti-apartheid party-Best suited to winning the day. But not suited for the day to day operations of government.
Old MK fighters with the AK-47 stashed under their beds did not make for good government ministers, businessmen, and the like.
They needed jobs, and their children need a good education. But the upper echelons of the ANC care only for lining their own pockets and increasing their own power way beyond anything the National Party leadership ever conceived of.
Mandela should have helped found more political parties, spread the power around. Instead he allowed the ANC to make South Africa into a one party state.

This is what happens when you try to do everything through a centralized govt. The entire political class’s pockets are lined before any of them even begin to worry about how they make themselves appear as though they are trying to deliver services. Get rid of politicians, keep the treasury, and strengthen the rand so the poorest with the fewest rands can afford the basics. Right now, the poorest have rands worth less and less and a government that takes the few resources available and squanders them.

This needs an update. The city now has 2million more people in 7 years, the council is spending billions upgrading the poorest areas. What other programs are being instituted to help the self builders with proper planning and building support for their self built houses. Ironically this funding has been available for 35 years but its not being accessed or used because people just don't know it exists plus the labels applied just dont do justice to the complex situation. There are those that just refuse to pay council taxes and when areas are upgraded, they move to a new unpopulated area and set up again. Not everyone is like this and for those who want the organisation and structure, it needs to be provided in a super organised way.

Poverty in South Africa is both the result of the abolishing of Apartheid. The black South Africans were poor already, but they all had jobs. Thanks to the Presidents after Mbeki this is what South Africa is made. Somewhere I feel that this video is made to bring apartheid view. Back somewhere. The guard is white, and all poor people's are black. However, white poverty is a massive problem too.

Nelson Mandela, who my mom nursed (off the Island) he had contracted TB due to appalling food - cld count his ribs - which was playing havoc with his bad heart (mauve coloured lips in his portraits indicate this condition)...he told my mother that for 50 years the ANC wanted to negotiate peaceful reconciliatory talks with Nats... (through the "back door" let alone the "front door"...they (Nats) point blank refused! IMAGINE had there been one how much further wld'nt we all be now... the future generations are bright & exceedingly intelligent.... going back in history they can DEDUCE very SUCCINCTLY, the SELFISHNESS & GREED OF PAST RULERS/DICTATORS - EXPLOITATION ON A HUGE SCALE...why the hell did'nt these share equally with the indiginy from the get-go!!!??? They must go back to the homelands until arrangements have been made where they can get a house when their turn is due . The waiting list is years and the conditions are filthy , unlike in the homelands where they plant food and attend local schools. There they live in tight knit communities and no one feels in danger like in the cities .Whites pay the tax and they are being killed or chased out of business due to new laws which dictate black management and shareholders ( up to 51 % of your business for free ) . So with fewer tax payers , 4 million to pay for the other 70 million , it is not feasible , and its getting worse by the month.
